Look, I don’t want any trouble.

If you promise to stay 3,856,928 parsecs away from me, I promise not to beg General Hux to nuke Endor and all of its surrounding moons before you get here.

lyledebeast: I saw a post about Hux in Downton Abbey so, naturally, I have to meta about them since.

via https://ift.tt/2PVkZFH

lyledebeast:

I saw a post about Hux in Downton Abbey so, naturally, I have to meta about them since these things are among my favorite topics.  And actually there is an interesting comparison to be made, because both fandoms, in my experience, involve a lot of debate about what makes a character sympathetic: is it how life has treated them or how they treat other people?

Obviously they’re doing it on a totally different scale–Thomas Barrow picking on people is hardly comparable with genocide–but both he and Hux are characters who have been shaped into bullies by a lifetime of bullying.  People who are fans of Thomas or or Hux (or both!) cite the bullying these characters have suffered as a mitigating circumstance: his behavior is wrong, but his need to strike before he’s struck himself is understandable.  For other people, the characters’ past doesn’t matter at all in comparison to how they behave.  So, in both cases, we have one side asking, how can you feel sorry for someone who does such mean things? Meanwhile, the other side asks, how can you not feel sorry for someone who’s been treated so badly?

Downton Abbey’s presentation of Thomas falls somewhere in the middle.  On the one hand, other characters sympathize with him sometimes, especially in later seasons.  There’s some understanding of the fact that being persecuted for his sexuality has had a negative effect on him.  At the same time, there are a lot of characters, including Thomas himself, who express the idea that he’d be better off if he were nicer to people.  It’s not satisfying to Thomas fans, but there’s some comfort in knowing it’s not satisfying to the other side either.

Star Wars canon, though, doesn’t even credit the idea that anyone could feel sorry for Hux. No one ever extends him any kind of sympathy in any version of the story, including characters who know about his past.  While Downton Abbey at least considers both positions, Star Wars comes down hard on the side of “treating people well is all that matters.” It hasn’t been very successful in stopping fans, though, and it’s not too hard to see why.  The Star Wars writers thew away a perfectly good opportunity to first NOT write Hux as a survivor of child abuse or, failing that, not allude to it again after Aftermath.  Instead, it’s established as a fact in novels and comics and it’s not contradicted in the movies. This isn’t just a matter of simply saying “people who do bad things are bad,” though.  It’s dismissive of a perspective on how sympathy works that is actually not uncommon among Star Wars fans

What’s particularly hard to stomach for me in SW’s treatment of Hux’s backstory is the way it seems to be saying that being abused as a child makes a person evil. In the Hux comic Snoke specifically says that it is the way that Hux was treated as a child and the rage that results from it which makes Hux useful to the forces of evil. There’s a definite feeling that abused children are dangerous, even monstrous, that comes out in his story (look at the way Brendol’s murder children are described in Aftermath) that doesn’t really endear SW to me.

The continued metaphor that Hux is a dog that has become savage from being kicked too often also doesn’t work for me. I have a friend who has a dog that was rescued from an abusive home, and after a fair amount of work and love, that dog is one of the nicest creatures you could ever meet. A dog that has been ill-treated is not unsalvageable by love and kindness. Nor is a child.

I find it quite distressing that SW treats Hux’s childhood abuse as a way to make him less sympathetic - as a way to emphasise what a monster he is if only because he was deliberately made into one. It seems incredibly Othering if a person being hurt is seen as another reason to distrust or dismiss them. How is that person ever to be treated as a fellow human, in that case?

Q&A: Constructed Languages

via https://ift.tt/2NsP5ix

howtofightwrite:

Random question: is there any languages that kinda look like elf languages, for example Welsh? Idk, I’m creating a new language for worldbuilding, and I thought.

That depends on your definition of “elf.”

Okay, so, we live in the aftermath of J.R.R. Tolkien’s rampage across fantasy literature. I don’t have much against Lord of the Rings, it’s very well written, and my reservations are more political. However, Lord of the Rings casts a very long shadow over the genre to the point that when you ask about elves, you’re probably asking about some variant of Tolkein’s elves.

Tolkein based his Elvish languages off of Finnish grammar, with elements pulled from other languages. Ironically, he did use Welsh, but it that was for the languages of Man.

So, is this right or wrong? It doesn’t matter. If you want to use Gaelic and say, “this is the language of the elves in my setting,” you’re not wrong. Just like if you wanted to use any other language that’s an option. You may wish to be a little sensitive when picking languages. Remember, these are real cultures and simply rebranding it can have some unfortunate connotations.

Stepping back from this for a second, Tolkien created his fantasy languages because that was his hobby. While it’s probably important to remember your fantasy characters aren’t speaking English (or whatever your native language is), your audience will be reading them in English.

Something really important happens here, if your character speaks both languages, they’ll be able to translate what the elves are saying. For that to be useful information for the audience, it needs to be restated in English. So, you can either write the same line twice, or skip the foreign language entirely.

In general, I’m not a fan of “Bilingual Bonuses,” unless the author is being clever about it. If you’re supposed to be going through the experiences of a character, either they know both languages, or they don’t. If they don’t, then as the audience, you shouldn’t have access to information they couldn’t use. Now, having said that, I’ll chalk this up to my aversion to metagaming in RPGs, so this isn’t the final word, but it is my bias on the subject.

When juggling alternate characters, you can get into situations where some are familiar with both languages, and others are not. It can be a little daunting to manage who can follow what parts of the conversation, and the dialog can become very messy, as characters bounce information back and forth, translating for one another. I wouldn’t, normally, recommend a scene like this, but it is an option.

Another option is to never provide a direct translation of what the elves are saying. So, instead of writing dialog you tell the audience what they’re talking about. I actually did this for a short back in college, where all of the dialog was described rather than written, and surprisingly, it kinda works. It feels weird after awhile, but if you’re using that to distinguish between two languages, it will keep them separate for the audience. It will also permanently separate your character from that language, and can allow you to articulate the experience of hitting a word or conjugation you don’t remember. Anyone who’s ever tried to use a foreign language they’re not fluent in, can relate.

Unless, like Tolkien, you’re really into the entire idea of creating your own language, this isn’t something I’d really recommend for world building. You probably want to have a grasp of how the language works, and if there are any weird omissions that tell you about that culture. However, actually sitting down and cooking up a full language is overkill unless you’re going to be using this for decades. You may want to create a few words or phrases that are left untranslated, but anything beyond that and you’re investing a lot of time into something you don’t need and probably won’t use.

Then again, I write up full setting bibles, so it’s not I’ve any room to judge what is, or is not, an efficient use of your time.

Here's how to take Wired's advice and get your own e-scooter, for a fraction of the cost

via https://ift.tt/2NUI2OC

mostlysignssomeportents:

Today, Wired advises you to “Stop Renting E-Scooters Every Day and Just Buy One Already!”, which may or may not be good advice in terms of your own safety and the safety of others, but if you like the idea, you don’t need to spend $1000-$1600 to risk your neck and the necks of everyone else on your commute.

Many cities have banned e-scooter short-hire vehicles and are impounding them, and in other cities, repo men have been busily seizing scooters left on private property, and the e-scooter companies, who already lose money on every scooter (they’re making it up in volume!) just abandon their scooters to rust away in impound lots and turn into e-waste.

Which means that you can pick up scooters for pocket-change in municipal auctions! There’s only one problem: the control units of these scooters only take orders from companies like Bird and Lime, so even after you own one of these things, you can’t ride it without paying an overcapitalized bezzle for the privilege.

That is…not unless you swap out the control unit! For $30 or less, you can get a conversion kit that swaps in with just a few screws’ worth of fiddling. Once you do that, that city impound scooter becomes your scooter, at a price so cheap you can buy two!

This strategy is totally legal, and totally toxic to Bird and Lime’s business model, and boy do they know it: last year, Bird threatened to sue me for writing about this in a bid to keep the news from spreading. Luckily, we recognized the hollowness of their threat and, with help from our friends at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, we were able to force them to back down and issue an apology (albeit not a very good one).

Consider this our bit of service journalism for the day: if you really want to own your own e-scooter, don’t contribute to the growing mountains of e-waste created by these things. Instead, help your city defray the costs of impounding the scooters that feckless, overcapitalized companies like Bird and Lime have littered our streets with, blocking wheelchair and stroller access and putting other sidewalk users at risk from high-speed, potentially lethal “personal transports.”

materialsscienceandengineering: ‘Artificial

via https://ift.tt/33rVMXo

materialsscienceandengineering:

‘Artificial leaf’ successfully produces clean gas

A widely-used gas that is currently produced from fossil fuels can instead be made by an ‘artificial leaf’ that uses only sunlight, carbon dioxide and water, and which could eventually be used to develop a sustainable liquid fuel alternative to petrol.

The carbon-neutral device sets a new benchmark in the field of solar fuels, after researchers at the University of Cambridge demonstrated that it can directly produce the gas – called syngas – in a sustainable and simple way.

Rather than running on fossil fuels, the artificial leaf is powered by sunlight, although it still works efficiently on cloudy and overcast days. And unlike the current industrial processes for producing syngas, the leaf does not release any additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The results are reported in the journal Nature Materials.

Syngas is currently made from a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and is used to produce a range of commodities, such as fuels, pharmaceuticals, plastics and fertilisers.

“You may not have heard of syngas itself but every day, you consume products that were created using it. Being able to produce it sustainably would be a critical step in closing the global carbon cycle and establishing a sustainable chemical and fuel industry,” said senior author Professor Erwin Reisner from Cambridge’s Department of Chemistry, who has spent seven years working towards this goal.

filigranka:The waste is the problem, but we also

via https://ift.tt/2WPUBhW

filigranka:

The waste is the problem, but we also don’t know what to do with definitely not environment neutral waste from batteries, electric cars, solar plants and other new green options, so they don’t have any advantage here (and a huge disadvantage called “the resources needed to make them are so scare, there’s hardly enough fot UK needs, let alone for the whole world’s” - I think somebody counted it, recently, and to fulfil the current UK’s needs via “green” plants, we would need 20-40 years of the whole world’s yearly mining sum of some metals; 40 years of the whole world’s yearly mined resources for UK only; terribly sorry to say, but our current technology behind the green methods of obtaining energy is just even less sustainable and no less damaging than coal and oil (it just damages the places the West don’t see) - and to get this resources, we’re reling on too low-wage workers and children labour, draining peripheral countries - taking the resources from them and not leaving them much - AND destroy the environment, mining them, more drastically than nuclear plants do) and at this point the research re: what to do with them are way less advanced than the research re: what to do with the nuclear waste. And all the waste from “eco/green” models of obtaining the energy (and batteries…) is rising in a pretty horrible tempo (and where the West put them, along with other chemical waste? ah. In Eastern Europe, in Africa, in Asia, in any place which is poorer. just not to look at them; for the planet,it doesn’t really matter where they are left. did you know we had a series of about 100 fires of the illegal, usually toxic, ‘imported’ waste dumpsters in just one previous summer. people who had to breathe the polluted, smoked air it in the nearby cities and villages weren’t happy about it, even if some Scandinavian countries could, thanks to it, claim they’re on “zero waste” model now…), I’m relatively sure that nuclear waste, thanks to its efficiency, would be lower.

And nuclear plants will fulfil our needs for the few next centuries aka buy us time to think what to with the waste and where to search for another energy source -perhaps even actual, not-so-destructive-for-environment-as-the-current-version solar or wind plants - while oil and coal will end much sooner and “green” methods are just - impossible, because there’s no (enough) resources for it at all, even now; in this way, they have already “ended”.

This, or we can let go of electricity and oil aka Internet, medicine, hospitals, big cities, buying things instead of hand-making them, all industries and all advanced technologies and start to live like pre-18th/19th century; so, obviously, not living alone, not eating so much - and only  local food! - no travelling further than to the nearest market for most of the people etc.. Individual freedom would go, then, too, because without all this technology is just impossible for any community to survive with such a level of individual freedom we’re accustomed to, it’d get destroyed; traditional communities are  very focused on the group survival.

redpotions:

preach king 🙌🙌🙌

a-cold-boy:

Remember friends, nuclear power:

produces carbon emissions per GWh comparable to hydro and wind (and significantly less than most solar options!)

has the absolute fewest deaths per GWh of power generated (yes, including Chernobyl)

only requires a small amount of physical space - a 4 square kilometre nuclear power plant can produce as much power as 34 square kilometres of solar panels or 190 square kilometres of wind turbines

redpotions:

sleepyowlet:Yeah, but “Ok Boomer”

via https://ift.tt/34CCpuR

sleepyowlet:

Yeah, but “Ok Boomer” is really just a response to certain (usually white cishet) older people who either write or buy into thinkturds like “Why are Millennials so lazy?” or “Why do Millennials never grow up?” or “Why do Millennials buy smartphones and bath bombs instead of houses?” instead of waking up, smelling the coffee and standing in solidarity with us. We read Marx. We know what the Capital does. The whole point of this is that they refuse to see that and would rather believe that a whole two generations of young people are too stupid and too lazy to properly adult than to accept the fact that there is something wrong with the system that treated them well.

We tried talking to them. We tried to confront them with facts and figures a thousand times, I don’t think there’s one Millennial or Gen-Zer alive who hasn’t had that conversation with a parent or another older relative. But at this point, it’s pretty much all willful ignorance on their part.

So we’re tired. There’s no help or support coming from those people, so we gave up trying to talk to them. We’re tired of having to prove our humanity to people who refuse to see that we got fucked by the system before we were even out of our diapers, who refuse to see that they are partially culpable. Because they got into positions of influence in the 80s and could have kept the change going. Instead, they got complacent and mostly stopped fighting and fell asleep on their heaps of doodahs while the capitalist steered governments quietly rolled back much of the progress made. But those Boomers didn’t care because they bought into the mentality of, “I got mine, fuck the rest.”

That’s why we’re pissed. That’s why we’re 100% done. It’s not about hating all older people and it never has been. This is just a very personal response to certain people in our lives who instead of helping us, supporting us in our struggle, or just listening, choose to shit all over us.

korrasera:

This is a really important point to absorb. A lot of the discussion we have around social justice and progressive causes is caught up in the need to draw faction lines and label other people as evilbadwrong so we can dismiss them. Do that without analysis and you’re just signing up for a new dogma, one that tells you that you’re pure and good if you’re sufficiently woke and willing to harm people that aren’t.

That’s why so many people go back and learn Marx, even today. You can’t go on belief alone, and the tools he developed to understand the nature between greed, power, and social hierarchies still sits at the heart of critical analysis of society and the oppression we face on a daily basis.

People want you to attack an identity, a label, a distraction, specifically to keep you from asking who it is that actually holds the reins of power.

anais-ninja-bitch:

also, the discourse is being generated by the same class of wealthy capitalists who materially benefit by dividing the rest of us against ourselves.

fleetnaturals:

also

a lot of the black and brown people of the boomer generation with radical politics were killed or are still in jail

a lot of the poor people of the boomer generation with radical politics died prematurely from being poor

a lot of the LGBTQ people of the boomer generation with radical politics didn’t survive the AIDS crisis

the conservative boomers are not a representative sample of everyone who was born from that era, they were just the ones who had the power and privilege to survive

larmekeii:

lets take it a step further and acknowledge that generation discourse–

which, for the most part is “haha old people are all racist and are ruining the planet”

–not only ignores the realities of elderly and middle aged PoC, but also implies that white millenials and gen-z’rs arent/cant be racist when that simply isnt the case.

e-seal:

As an older person myself  I think a lot of this is like the ‘not all men’ and ‘not all white people’ stuff. If you are a boomer who has fought all your life for social justice, equality, everyone having the means and opportunity to have a decent life, etc, it might be irritating to be grouped in with the reactionaries who haven’t, but in the end ‘ok boomer’ is not really about you.

It’s about the people who won’t listen. Who won’t be persuaded by reasoned argument or by the spectacle of human suffering. It’s about the people with whom you’ve probably also been brought to tears of frustration all your life.

I’m not going to lie, watching Piers Morgan be roundly shut down on twitter by dozens of people going ‘ok boomer’ to him gave me great joy. It’s all he deserves.

so, uh, open writing question:

how do we feel about using the word ‘doppler’ in a secondary world where Christian Doppler didn’t exist?

Anything you can’t explain a wizard did it.

Christian Doppler didn’t exist but perhaps the D’opplr School of Physical Forces does exist in this universe and has theories about sound and magic?  (though you’d still just call it doppler and drop backstory if someone got snarky?)

However.

I’ve been going slowly crazy for years over X-Wings and Y-Wings and now Poe spelling out “Hux” because OKAY does Basic have letters shaped like X’s and Y’s and are they pronounced the same way and why doesn’t the rest of the Basic orthography match that and OH apparently people like me kept asking that question so they made up a totally separate “high” alphabet to explain it and basically if you examine the worldbuilding in Star Wars for even half a second it falls apart -

So I guess the answer depends on how nerdy and obsessive you expect your readers to be.

As a nerd, I frequently have a similar problem when it comes to writing a character loving french toast in a world where there’s no France.

If one is to start following that path, which I don’t recommend, you’ll have to consider that your world probably didn’t have a Greece or Rome, but removing every word with Greek or Latin components from your story is likely to cripple it pretty badly.

See, and if it’s something I can write off as a translation thing - okay there is probably a variety of bird that is similar to falcons on Bespin or whatever and canonically there are ducks in the EU like, okay, okay okay, I can handle that.

But Y and X and A are specific shapes that correlate to one very specific character set, that’s different.

(So if the doppler thing is briefly mentioning the doppler effect that’s like “okay, this is a translation” but if you’re digging into the science of DB reduction as sound moves away from a listener as important background to a plot point then you’re gonna end up with nerds sniping - thus the explanation of “a wizard did it” as a handwave to appease the nerds)

(But also please remember that Tolkein nerds are A THING; learning a language from the ground up is not a barrier to a certain kind of nerd enjoying a story)

I’m here for the Star Wars take on it. :D

The full story:

There is an Irish restaurant chain called Supermacs that has opnened around 100 stores in Ireland since 1978.

Recently, McDonald’s decided that this small restaurant chain that hasn’t even made it out of Ireland needed to be taught a lesson, and sued them on the basis that “Supermacs” infringes on the “Big Mac” brand name. Which is, of course, absolutely ridiculous.

McDonald’s ended up losing the case, because of course they did, they didn’t have a case to begin with. As a result, McDonald’s lost the rights to the term “Big Mac” across the entire European Union.

Which is why Burger King gets to do this with no legal repercussions.

A quick reminder for folks in the US: if you haven’t seen anything about ACA open enrollment this year, that is by design. Secretary Azar wants to lower enrollment numbers to justify pulling funds from medicare/medicaid. Here are your dates:

I remember posting somewhere once in a thread about why girls aren’t exploited in animation anymore where some guy said, “all the disney girls are drawn to be generally attractive, but I don’t think there are any eye-candy men… or are there? Are there any Disney men that lots of girls like?” and I mentioned Roger. Tons of girls replied agreeing with me and the original guy was like “wait, Roger? from 101 Dalmatians? What’s attractive about him, he’s tall and lanky and has a big nose, he isn’t muscley at all! Wouldn’t you all prefer Gaston or something? Or do you girls think his big nose is indicative of something else?” and I was like “no, you idiot, he’s a silly, goofy guy who likes animals and can play a bunch of instruments, that’s why he’s attractive. What’s the matter with you? Gaston, seriously?”

This is why we need more girls in animation. And more guys like Roger apparently.

This is why I laugh my ass of whenever dudes talk about how men are “objectified” by the media too. Because 9 times out of 10, what men think is “women objectifying men” are characters like Gaston.

And Gaston is NOT a woman-driven fantasy. Gaston is a male wish fulfillment fantasy. Gaston is not what women want, he is what men want to be. He is hyper-masculinity to an extreme degree, dripping with sexism and testosterone. The fact that men think that Gaston is what women want says an awful lot about those men.

While I don’t want to generalize, female fans tend to prefer a very different kind of male hero. We like the Rogers, the Milos, the Hercules. Genuinely kind, often awkward men who are sometimes vulnerable and respectful to women.

Yes, this is a generalization. I own up to that. But I think it’s important to remember that there is often VERY big difference between what MEN want to be and what women WANT in our media.

Reblogging this again because fucking this. And hell, even the muscley dudes (see: Khal Drogo, Hercules, Thor, Captain America) are loved, not because they are muscley, but because they are sweet and loving and adorable. We love Thor because his mispronounces “Hubble” as “Hooble,” not because of what he can do with a hammer.

Reblogging for the awesome comments.

I’m just here to say I love the animation of Roger so fucking much.  look how fucking smooth and graceful and agile he is. 2d animation is amazing and i just want to hug it

All of this.

Okay, listen, to return briefly to the idea of Gaston: Beauty and the Beast is actually the first animated Disney screen play written by a woman. Linda Woolverton, the screenwriter, got a lot of attention for creating a self-proclaimed feminist heroine in 1991, but she also had a *lot* to say about Gaston. She didn’t stumble into that villain by mistake. She crafted him based on her own experiences with men and even her ex-boyfriends, and said: “To Gaston, Belle wasn’t a person; she was a possession. And I think it’s great for little boys to see that Beauty doesn’t choose him. Not only can they look at Gaston as an example of how not to treat women, but they can hopefully be taught by the Beast, a macho guy who is comfortable with his feelings and gentleness. He could teach a lot of men, in fact, about sensitivity.“

Not only is Gaston not a woman’s fantasy, he’s literally a woman’s horror story.

Reblogging for:

“The fact that men think that Gaston is what women want says an awful lot about those men.”

“Not only is Gaston not a woman’s fantasy, he’s literally a woman’s horror story.”

FREAKING YES

Reblogging because there was the whole post where extreme MRAs were saying that Gaston was the true hero of the story and that Belle should have picked him instead of Adam.

Reblogging because I just noticed Roger’s shame-stack of teacups by his workspace and realized I have never related to a Disney character more

Snopes is struggling due to mounting legal fees and they are a crucial organization for the fucked up, anti-truth time we’re currently living in, so I’m donating what I can and also writing drabbles* in exchange for any level of donation.

If you donate $50+, I am also willing to update the WIP of your choice lol

Just donate & send me a screenshot and a prompt/pairing.

*in this case, drabbles means at least 100 words; they will likely be more because i have no restraint or good sense

Here’s the letter from the Snopes page describing the issue:
November 1, 2019 by David Mikkelson, Organizer

Dear Readers,

We wish we had better news, but they have filed another appeal. This time they’re appealing our successful defense of our First Amendment rights.

Parties suing us — including newly minted CEO of Salon.com, Chris Richmond — have spent years filing losing motions, asking for continuances, changing legal counsel, and appealing adverse rulings.

It is all part of a scheme, our counsel wrote, “to ‘bring legal hell’ on Snopes employees in retaliation for terminating Snopes’ contract with Proper Media.”

Even the court described their tactics as “hostile.”

With the truth on our side, we have foiled their attempts so far. But now the case will drag on even longer and legal fees will continue to drain our revenues, threatening Snopes’ existence.

But even while they try to drag us down, we are showing up to make Snopes work better for you.

Soon we will bring you two major new developments:

A membership program that will reward sustaining Snopes supporters with special features and exclusive content.

And Snopes News, a feed without the falsity, where you can find headlines of the day curated by fact-checkers and editors you know you can trust. Sign up for updates here.

So long as we have your support, we will not give up.

Make a contribution today to defend Snopes.

Truthfully yours,
Team Snopes

I’d like to add Snopes is one of THE most trusted sources out there, and if it goes we will lose a great deal

You might remember, earlier this evening, I asked a rather pointed question about witchcraft.

Okay, but can we talk about how Shadwell’s entire process for interrogating a suspected witch is to ask if they happen to be a witch, and if they say “no” then they aren’t?

Also, this post reminded me that Crowley isn’t actually a mammal, and now I can’t stop imagining Shadwell asking him how many nipples he has, and Crowley just being tired (because he lived through the 1600s, so you know this isn’t the first time he’s had this conversation) and just saying “none”.

And Shadwell being oddly stumped by this, because, on the one hand, that’s not normal, but on the other hand, if having too many nipples makes you a witch, then having too few…

amarguerite:I am still so salty over the wrongs against Mr Bennet committed by that dreck novel...

via https://ift.tt/2NOmpiO

amarguerite:

I am still so salty over the wrongs against Mr Bennet committed by that dreck novel Longbourn. It completely ruins the point if Mr Bennet is a secret libertine!

Mr Bennet is a good man and landowner! He is respected by his family and community! His respectability ensures that of his daughters! Austen makes a point of saying that even though he doesn’t love or respect Mrs Bennet he’s never cheated on her! He’s not actively awful, he’s just super depressed about how his life turned out and consoles himself by hiding in his library and sharpening his wit on anyone who’s annoying him!

His big offense is due to inaction not action— it’s his indifference that causes big problems in his dysfunctional family, and spurs on Lydia’s Big Dumb Choice. I firmly believe that a point Austen was trying to make, especially through her description of Darcy’s land management praxis is that if you have supreme power as a male landowner, you can’t be indifferent. You can’t just maintain what you have— you have to improve it, for all those who depend on you. You have to use your powers for the good of your community.

bemusedlybespectacled: I have exactly one (1) lifeha

via https://ift.tt/36H0cM9

bemusedlybespectacled:

I have exactly one (1) lifehack for every adult thing and that is “admit your ignorance to customer service people”

no, seriously! I know how nothing in adult life works, but I have learned it by calling up the customer service division of whatever agency I am having a problem with and then just asking about whatever the problem is, emphasizing my complete lack of knowledge about the thing.

my actual literal script for these interactions: “Hi, my name is [name]. This is my problem: [problem]. I don’t know how [adult thing] works. could you explain how [adult thing] works?” it fucking works every time.

me: I keep getting conflicting information as to whether my therapist is covered by my health insurance. I don’t know anything about health insurance, so this is very confusing to me. could you explain why this might be happening?
health insurance customer service: it’s because your normal health insurance is X company but your mental healthcare is subcontracted out to Y company, and Y covers your therapist but X doesn’t. just always bill Y when you go to your therapist and you’ll be fine.

me: I accidentally put the wrong date to pay my credit card off and I’m afraid it will post before I get paid. this is my first credit card so I don’t know what I’m doing. could you tell me when it will post?
customer service person: it will send a message to your bank today, but your bank won’t respond to it until tomorrow when you get paid, so you’re fine. and even if it does bounce, the fee is only $25 and you qualify for a waiver.

me: I went to an urgent care place that said they’d take my health insurance, but now i have a big bill. I don’t know how billing works: can you explain why the amount is so much for such a routine trip?
customer service person: it’s because you were out of network at the time. however, since your insurance hasn’t covered the cost of care, the urgent care people should refund you for the cost of the services you paid for.
me: [gets actual check in mail for the $200 I spent on testing my pee]

I would not recommend this method for retail (for the love of god, do not tell a sleazy car dealer that you don’t know how cars work), and sure, sometimes you have to speak to the manager or threaten a credit card chargeback or whatever you need to do. but 99% of the time, speaking nicely and admitting to needing help has worked wonders for me, and means I don’t have to stew in terror over doing some adult thing Wrong.
