Fic idea I was struck with the other day and keep thinking about: a Vulcan adopts a cat.

Still thinking about this, even though I’m not writing the fic!

This Vulcan, I’m calling her T’Pen, goes to a shelter and gets a cat, and the shelter employees are like, a bit weirded out? But obviously they’re going to give her a cat, I mean, she’s a Vulcan, she’s Super Responsible, she takes all the pamphlets and listens attentively to all the advice the shelter employees give her, even though it is obvious she researched a lot on her own.

Then T’Pen asks the shelter folks what she should name the cat and runs into That Thing Humans Do Where They Confound a Vulcan With Their Weird Ways

Shelter Employee 1: oh, you can name a cat anything! That’s what’s great! People names, common nouns, whole phrases.

Shelter Employee 2: yeah, nothing sounds weird on a cat. Everything from Chad to Cupboard is fair game.

SE 1: yeah, I mean, you can’t call a dog Chad, that would be weird

SE 2: I wouldn’t fuckin’ trust anyone who named their dog Chad

SE 1: oh word

T’Pen:….

T’Pen: ….fascinating.

Later, in the interest of furthering her anthropological study of Earth, T’Pen has a houseparty and she invites her coworkers, many of whom are human, but others which are aliens, and are fascinated by T’Pen’s cat

Vulcan Co-worker: T’Pen, what have you named this small Earth feline?

T’Pen: I have named him Marmalade.

Vucan co-worker: Is that not the name of a type of Terran fruit preserve? I do not understand the logic behind this choice.

T’Pen: the logic is self-evident to a human.

Human Co-worker: T’Pen, omg, you have a cat! What’s his name?

T’Pen: thank you for your inquiry. His name is Marmalade

Human Co-worker: oooh! yeah, that makes sense, because he’s orange and sweet! lmao, great name

Vulcan Co-worker: …

Vulcan Co-worker: ….fascinating

Human: So, how’s Marmalade?

T’Pen: He has the peculiar habit of walking on my workstation.

Human: Aggravating, isn’t it?

T’Pen: We Vulcans do not feel human emotions. However, I would prefer it if Marmalade stayed off my workstation, particularly when I am working.

Human: Get a box.

T’Pen: Murdering Marmalade seems an overreaction.

Human: No, you need a box with interior dimensions approximately the same as Marmalade’s body, and set it on the floor next to your workstation. Marmalade will sit in the box.

T’Pen: Why do you believe that this will work for Marmalade?

Human: We don’t know. It’s just something cats do. If he fits, he sits.

T’Pen: … Fascinating.

Vulcan Commander: T’Pen, you are posting videos of your cat. Explain.

T’pen: My colleagues are amused and entertained by Marmalade’s interactions with his environment. I am amused and entertained by their reactions as reflected in the comments.

Vulcan Commander (reading): “U haz done me a startle”?

T’Pen: Some of them like to verbalize what they believe are Marmalade’s thought processes. He is a cat, so they imagine that he does not grasp human spelling and grammar.

Vulcan Commander: … Fascinating. As you were. (signs off)

T’Pen (returning to her meal): Now I can haz lunch.

Can haz lunch I’m dying.

Vulcan Commander: You are late for your regular checkin.

T’Pen: I apologize, commander. Marmalade was sitting on my lap.

Commander: …

T’Pen: And I was unable to remove him from it.

Commander: Curious. What prevented the feline’s removal?

T’Pen: He was purring. It was… quite soothing.

Commander: Fascinating.

It is important for EVERYONE to know how to help ANYONE. Not everyone can give them selves their medicine under every circumstance. Be educated, help out.

In the last year, i have gotten about five new violent allergies from foods i used to be able to eat. Next time i eat a fruit, my throat could close. I may not be able to inject myself. My boyfriend and i played with my trainer pen for like 30 minutes. He knows how to inject it. I know how. This is important.

I feel like the fact that gendered pronouns even exist in the first place is a testament to the grotesque importance of gender within civilization as a means of stratification and control.
When you refer to someone, why do you use pronouns for gender, of all things, given the grammatical reason for the existence of pronouns (to serve as a short substitute to a person’s name when referring to them repeatedly)? Under the logic of gendered pronouns, pronouns could be used to indicate any property or characteristic of an individual and yet they were chosen to indicate gender. Are the ideal physical characteristics and/or societal role of an individual, i.e., their gender, necessary to mention constantly in casual speech as a substitute for their name? The fact that gender is given so much importance in language is a clear illustration of society’s dependence on gender and the division of labor that comes therewith.

this is a great take and also a really entertaining time to let you know that grammatical “gender” of pronouns in sumerian was not divided as masculine/feminine but rather animate/inanimate, and the “animate” gender was used of humans, gods, and…. statues…..

Other languages use age instead.

swahili divides its nouns into over a dozen classes, which are sometimes referred to as ‘gender’ in English because their grammatical weight is comparable and the first time i saw this usage i became. so confused.

abstract gender. no-one-cares-whether-it’s-plural gender. artificial inanimate object gender. plant gender. person gender.

lions have ‘no one cares how many there are’ ‘gender’ except for some reason it’s the custom to pretend they have person gender and inflect your sentences that way, and i once failed a quiz because of this and have never forgiven the lions.

So here’s my question: if I want to create a fantasy culture that has differently structured/more than 2 pronouns, how the fuck do I write that in English so it makes sense? Is that even possible?

Potential options:

a) create neopronouns and either
a.i) don’t use any binary English pronouns in the manuscript and make the reader follow along with whatever you do use
a.ii) use some conventional pronouns alongside neopronouns, but do not align them particularly with our concepts of male/female
b) keep to three genders and use he/she/they, but amplify uncertainty about whether those genders keep to the way that we would assign gender

Ursula Vernon does it to great effect in the Clockwork Boys, in which we meet a gnole who uses he/him pronouns… and it slowly turns out that the pronouns correspond to his caste and occupation rather than to his sex, which eventually becomes apparent when he casually mentions family members and when they meet individuals from other castes.

Do you want to wrong-foot your readers by allowing them to form Expectations and then undermining them with increasingly less subtlety, or do you want to make your readers see that their Expectations don’t apply immediately and make them try to translate those Expectations on the fly as they read? Where do you want to impose the cognitive load in the reader?

Oh.

Oh my god.

I need this.

If a person had stated a preference for female or male pronouns, then referring to them as NOT FEMALE or NOT MALE by deliberately using a pronoun that’s gender-neutral is pretty damn rude.

THAT WOMAN IS NOT GENDER-NEUTRAL, SHE’S A WOMAN. SHE JUST TOLD YOU SO.

THAT MAN IS NOT GENDER-NEUTRAL, HE’S A MAN. HE JUST TOLD YOU SO.

WHEN A PERSON HAS TOLD YOU THEIR GENDER, REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT GENDER BY INSISTING ON USING GENDER-NEUTRAL LANGUAGE FOR THAT PERSON IS FUCKING RUDE.

That person you DON’T KNOW the gender of yet? That’s a person you want to use gender-neutral pronouns for, up until you know which one is appropriate. That non-binary person who has said they don’t view themselves as a woman, or a man? That’s the person you want to use non-gendered pronouns with, but you should ask if they/them is their preference, or if they have another.

gaymenaredivineincarnate:

Also for a lot of us, they/them isn’t gender neutral. There are lesbians who use he/him as gender neutral terms. And there are gay men who use she/her as gender neutral terms.

fleetnaturals:

also, not to be pedantic but as a cis gay guy i don’t want to be referred to as they/them because 1) i have my own way of expressing gender nonconformity that is compatible with using he/him pronouns and 2) i don’t want to take space and energy away from non binary people who use they/them pronouns as their main mode of identity

like if someone is using they/them as a gender neutral way of referring to me because they don’t know me that well that’s fine i guess, but i’ve had other queer people use they/them pronouns with me because they didn’t think he/him pronouns suited me in the way that i express my gender which is homophobia and just feels Gross™

but my point is that they and them doesn’t refer to a specific gender so their use can’t be “misgendering” like there’s a complete lack of specified gender

teenelf:

why would you be gender neutral whn you know that person’s gender and their pronoun preferences

marcjacobspartydresscode:

but they and them are gender neutral words

teenelf:

if a trans woman uses she/her and has told you that, using they/them pronouns for her is deliberate misgendering

marcjacobspartydresscode:

how?

sheepsbian:

as much as i appreciate the increased usage of they/them pronouns as a non binary person that uses those pronouns, y'all need to also understand that using they/them on someone who does not use they/them is still misgendering

This is also something that applies to anxiety and other mental illnesses/chronic illnesses. They take energy to manage. Having to do things while anxious or depressed or going through a depersonalization episode is exhausting mentally and physically. You are going to be tired from that, just like any other exhausting activity, and you need to let yourself rest afterwards.

bananonbinary:

i wanna really zero in on “…the energy that you spend fighting your depression.”

i’ve never heard anyone say that before. sure, having depression means i have LESS energy, but that still always frustrated me because it didn’t feel like an “excuse” to take a nap. it just means i can’t get as much done, but i should still be wide awake while doing those things, right? i’ve never even considered depression as something that actively takes energy to fight. a constant amount of effort exerted in the background instead of just a one-time penalty to how much energy you have overall.

this helped a lot, thank you.

dudepositivity:

If you have depression and find yourself taking naps often due to chronic fatigue I just wanna remind you that you aren’t wasting time. You aren’t running out of time. You need rest, you need to catch up on the energy that you spend fighting your depression. It’s all gonna be okay. Life is long, you’re not wasting it by sleeping a little more often.

Ah yes. Ren ever so politely scheduled the filming of the morale-boosting film to coincide with the times I was least available. I’m a very busy man, with an army to command, many droid children and, of course my beloved Millicent… and my needy husband. I managed to attend a photoshoot for the film several months ago, but it was poorly planned. I had to pose with General Pryde and listen to all his “constructive” criticism. There weren’t even enough chairs to go around! I attended another photoshoot as well, but it was qually disappointing. They wouldn’t let me wear my coat or gloves, so I had to put my hands behind me back the whole time.

As for the holovid filming, much of it was filmed while I was out sick with porg flu (you can thank Mitaka for bringing one back to the ship…). There was another filming session that Ren conveniently booked on my anniversary with Dameron (the fact that Ren remembered when our anniversary was is unnerving). Needless to say, I was unavailable. The film crew managed to get some footage of Dameron from his InterstellarGram Channel, but I don’t like video-based social media.

I sent the film crew several of my speeches decrying Ren’s incompetence and calling for a coup, but they haven’t replied to my messages. I do hope they use at least some of this footage. If not, however, I understand that there are other morale-boosting sources that have taken interest in it. Dameron mentioned some sort of archive, though I haven’t done all my research on it quite yet.

Brazil: Amazon land defender killed by illegal loggers

A young indigenous land defender has been shot dead and another wounded by illegal loggers in Brazil’s Amazon.

Paulo Paulino Guajajara was reportedly attacked and shot in the head while hunting on Friday inside the Arariboia reservation in Maranhao state.

He was a member of Guardians of the Forest, a group formed to combat logging gangs in the area.

The killing increases concerns about escalating violence against Amazon forest protectors.

“I’m scared at times, but we have to lift up our heads and act. We are here fighting,” he told Reuters news agency this year.

“There is so much destruction of nature happening, good trees with wood as hard as steel being cut down and taken away,” he added.

“We have to preserve this life for our children’s future.”

there are local and state primaries and elections every year!

this year on tuesday, november 5th, there are elections all across the country for everything from local councils to governorships and entire legislatures up for re-election

these elections matter almost more than national races because they’re the people who will make decisions on a local, personal level

they’re the people who will get to decide congressional districts after the 2020 census and how much states spend on education and and healthcare and whether abortion rights should be upheld or slowly stripped away and if that shitty road that everyone complains about will actually be repaved

every vote counts in these elections

every. single. vote.

systemic change and progress doesn’t happen by only voting for presidents or even showing up to vote for your congressional representatives and senators

if you want real change to happen you have to effect it at every level

so find your polling place and go vote

every year. twice a year.

Bizarre ant colony discovered in an abandoned Polish nuclear weapons bunker:

sprite-cranberry-moment:

swdyww:

thefuzzydave:

What they found, over two seasons of observation, was a group of almost a million worker ants whose lives are so strange that they hesitate to call them a “colony” in the observations they just published in The Journal of Hymenoptera. Because conditions in the bunker are so harsh, constantly cold, and mostly barren, the ants seem to live in a state of near-starvation. They produce no queens, no males, and no offspring. The massive group tending the nest is entirely composed of non-reproductive female workers, supplemented every year by a new rain of unfortunate ants falling down the ventilation shaft.

This is insane

Porous polymer coatings dynamically control light and heat

Buildings devote more than 30% of their energy use to heating, cooling, and lighting systems. Passive designs such as cool roof paints have gone a long way toward reducing this usage, and its impact on the environment and climate, but they have one key limitation—they are usually static, and thus not responsive to daily or seasonal changes.

Columbia Engineering researchers have developed porous polymer coatings (PPCs) that enable inexpensive and scalable ways to control light and heat in buildings. They took advantage of the optical switchability of PPCs in the solar wavelengths to regulate solar heating and daylighting, and extended the concept to thermal infrared wavelengths to modulate heat radiated by objects. Their work is published on October 21, 2019 by Joule.

“Our work shows that by wetting PPCs with common liquids like alcohols or water, we can reversibly switch their optical transmittance in the solar and thermal wavelengths,” says Jyotirmoy Mandal, lead author of the study and a former Ph.D. student in the lab of Yuan Yang, assistant professor of materials science and engineering. “By putting such PPCs in hollow plastic or glass panels, we can make building envelopes that can regulate indoor temperatures and light.”
