the force awakens worked because it wasnt in reaction to anything - it was the first movie - and apart from making sure it looked like star wars again there was no way to be sure what people wanted and that it would land well. and then it did and people liked it but began to argue it looked Too Much like star wars - that it copied too much. whether thats true or not isnt important - its what was said. Overwhelmingly. so much was said and judged by people who had never written an long-form piece of fiction in their life.
then the last jedi was so so much written in reaction to the audience - rian johnson couldnt seperate how star wars worked within its own universe and how its perceived in reality. he had luke skywalker call a light saber a lazer sword?? he had kylo ‘hurt’ rey by telling her that her parents were ‘no one’ like… rey NEVER thought her parents were important. she never thought she was. she only wanted to know who they were because it was important to her! it was just rian and disney telling the audience through rey to go fuck themselves for speculating about it wrongly believing the audience wanted to be Shocked. but theres shocked (amazed and hooked) and shocked (confused and angry). and the latter isnt fun for audiences.
the rise of skywalker tries to correct all the mistakes in one movie without retconning tlj, it tries really hard, but its just not possible at this point - the damage is done. and its clear theres heavy fan service going on to try and win people back but its just so poorly guided because you Cant Please Everyone and even then its poorly executed because its just execs Telling JJ to include something rather than it actually being right for the story and making sense (if you’ve seen it i bet you can guess what moment(s) i mean) so moment and crudely shoehorned in and seem Wrong.
tl;dr: disney execs need to get their spoons out the stew and let creators be creators again
organasrey:
disney is literally the death of genuine creativity. no story is gonna truly connect with an audience when its been butchered by execs in a boardroom whose only thought is to make the highest profit they can.

Like he’s willing to put up with loads of humiliation and abuse in the hopes that someday he’ll get his comeuppance, he asked Finn to shoot him so he could continue to spy on a ship where his boss can literally invade his mind if he so wishes, Hux is brave he’s just not the “I’m gonna beat u with my fists right here and now” brave
twink-hux:
Kylo always calls Hux a coward but then WHO is always getting almost mauled to death by wild animals or skewered by Jedi in training? Not Hux! He’s not cowardly he is simply a Twink with a gun and a reasonable idea of his abilities and his own mortality
