Lyft just offered me free credits to break the strike this week.

There’s a lyft / uber strike planned this week from 7am to 9pm on Wednesday May 8th. I got a notification this morning that every ride taken this week gives me credit on future rides. I found that tempting but then remembered why they are doing it - to encourage folks to cross a picket line. I for one won’t be taking advantage of this offer, as I stand in solidarity with people utilizing their right to free speech to bargain for better working conditions.

Consider this a friendly reminder to those who follow me that this is happening, and I hope you’ll support the apps’ drivers in their quests for better pay.

It is an unspoken rule that if a little kid is hiding under a blanket or couch cushions, you are required to comment on how lumpy the blanket is and pretend to sit on it to try and “smooth it out.”

Also, if you’re playing hide-and-seek with them, it is critical that you search every other possible (and impossible) hiding spot, all the while wondering out loud how they managed to disappear just like magic, before walking right past their hiding spot.

And if a baby starts playing peekaboo you are required to act surprised when they show their face again

If a kid hands you a phone, you answer it

If a kid shoots you with a Nerf Gun you are supposed to Die a dramatic death and explain “ugh you shot me blaahh”

when you push a kid on the swings ya gotta do the woosh

I literally just blocked about a dozen people on this post for being cranky about children.

Being a joyless shitbeast to kids isn’t cool. They’re kids. If you want to be Oscar the Grouch, that’s fine, but do it in a way they understand and explain it to them.

“I don’t want to play, I’m grumpy. Thank you, though, that was kind.”

It’s literally not hard. Kids are small people. Treat them with common fucking decency.

A new study suggests that 6000-years-ago people across Europe shared a cultural tradition of using freshwater mussel shells to craft ornaments.

An international team of researchers, including academics from the University of York, extracted ancient proteins from prehistoric shell ornaments – which look remarkably similar despite being found at distant locations in Denmark, Romania and Germany – and discovered they were all made using the mother-of-pearl of freshwater mussels.

The ornaments were made between 4200 and 3800 BC and were even found in areas on the coast where plenty of other shells would have been available.

Archaeological evidence suggests the ornaments, known as “double-buttons,” may have been pressed into leather to decorate armbands or belts. Read more.

What she says: I’m fine

What she means: So in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ when Vader just offs Ozzel and promotes Piett like five ranks with barely a glance like how exactly did that work out like did he have to argue with other officers that yes, in fact, Darth Vader /totally/ just made him admiral and compile witnesses and a supporting sound file or is this an event that happens frequently enough that the people who document this shit just roll their eyes and go “He fucking did it again, guys” and curse under their breaths because they just got another load of fucking paperwork to deal with another dead fucking admiral and another pile of ranks to give some random asshole and it wasn’t even clarified whether he was a rear admiral or an admiral admiral so they’ll just have to fucking figure that out, too, then or-

Alternatively:

The folks in HR just shrug when they see the name Piett, because this only ever happens to him. He’s been promoted like 10 times over the bodies of previous superiors. Vader likes the guy, obviously, and they’ve given up asking why. At this point they’ve just got the paperwork for every possible rank Piett could be promoted to ready to go.

I love this because it also implies that somewhere, some HR folks have the paperwork ready to go, for if Piett should ever be “promoted” to Emperor.

I didn’t know I need this as a part of my headcanon but now I do. Thank you.

I mean i think those memes are mostly about how someone ACTUALLY  finds another person sexually attractive aka hot which is why they point them to ace people and since ace people dont experience sexual attraction or have any idea how it is experienced we CAN see that someone is aesthetically pleasing but ultimately to us they are just a random person with a body yk? Theres a difference between being experiencing sexual attraction and seeing  a person you find “hot” and being ace and just registering that X person has an aesthetically pleasing body altho who knows maybe some ace people might do it bc of internalized aphobia too i personally havent ever heard something like u said before today haha

Yeah, I’ve thought right from the start that the ST just doesn’t take seriously enough the fact that the FO are (for the most part) brainwashed from birth. They say it, but nobody seems to be grappling with what it means for the FO’s moral responsibility.

Much though I like Finn as a person, it galls me that a lot of his purpose in the narrative is to be the character you point at and say “Finn chose not to fight for them so everyone else in the FO must be actively and informedly choosing to stay.”

Part of Finn’s purpose in the narrative is to be the excuse through which you can condemn the rest of the FO’s young people. He’s there to make the argument that everyone has free choice at all times and that therefore all the rest of the brainwashed characters have full moral culpability and we don’t need to worry about them.

Which tbh I find unrealistic and unfair.

I guess everything changed for me when it became the children of the bad guys who were still having to fight the wars of their elders. Because to me those kids (now young adults) are victims too.

When I’m feeling generous, I remember that I would also be very vocal in defense of a guy who’d been groomed since childhood by Snoke and then woke to find his uncle trying to kill him, only to flee to Snoke for protection, discover he was trapped in a horrifying hellscape full of people he couldn’t respect, had no-one he could trust and therefore fell back on looking after himself because no-one else would…

I would be very vocal in Kylo’s defense if everyone else was condemning him. But as it is, I believe the narrative is at least slightly in his favour, and I know the fandom is very much in his favour, so he doesn’t need me to defend him too.

The rest of the younger generation of the FO, however, seem to have been ruled disposable by everyone, so they’re the ones who get my concern. It’s a limited resource ;)

this doesnt just go for lesbians it goes for bi women and straight women too. i cant even count how many times straight women have told me “i wish i was a lesbian so i didnt have to date men” but guess what … u Dont have to date men

to be clear this also isnt necessarily saying ‘go date women instead!!’ its just saying…. u dont have to date men. u dont have to be dating women in order to not date men! in fact if ur not attracted to women at all please dont date women just as a substitute for men. but if dating men isnt making u happy… u dont have to do that. u dont have to make a space in ur life for men

In 2019 we grow from sex positivity to sex responsibility, meaning we:

call out shitty people who are just abusers and using kink/polyamory to mask it and stop supporting them

recognize that sometimes hypersexuality can be a form a self-harm for some people

keep kinks and fetishes in appropriate spaces and not bringing them out into general public spaces and thereby involving people in scenes they aren’t consenting to

understand that some fetishes are inherently unhealthy and some illegal to actually engage in for good reason and ignoring that is irresponsible at best

teaching teenagers safe sex but not encouraging them to engage or seek out dangerous sexual situations or sex with a partner who doesn’t care about them in an attempt to be ‘sexually liberated’

The first training of Zuko we see, Iroh shoots a fireball right into Zuko’s face - while Zuko just stands there unflinching. It’s the very first episode, and Zuko & Iroh are the obvious villains, and it just seems like some macho bs they do.  And then comes the duel with Zhao, and Zuko is down, but when he sees that flaming fist to his face, something lets loose inside him that helps him turn the fight around…But it’s not until we learn Zuko’s backstory that all this gets a whole new meaning.

Why would Zuko still be on basics if not because he suffered a huge setback after his agni kai? Imagine how much hard work, patience it was to build Zuko back up again, so he would not freeze in blind panic (or curl up in a ball) when fire gets close to his face. I think Iroh practiced this with him all the time until he could stand there unflinching (knowing that Iroh is in full control of his bending and trusting that his uncle would never hurt him). And when it came to the duel with Zhao, Zuko could react in a RL situation instead of freezing up, and turn all the negative feelings (rage, anger, pain, whatever) into fuel to win the fight against a bender who is much more skilled than he is.

And Iroh obviously drilled him with control and restraint, because no matter how much he lets his rage loose, he has enough control not to hurt Zhao and enough self-restraint not to burn him at the end. I definitely think it was a deliberate choice on Iroh’s part to hold back on teaching offensive forms to Zuko beyond the basics (knowing that combining those with his unprocessed anger could result in him being out of control and hurt people). Instead, it seems he concentrated on teaching him defensive forms, fire breath, heat control, and so on…

Oh god, that makes such sense. Even after recovery, Zuko would not have wanted fire anywhere near him, especially his face, and it would have been ages until he could bend without flinching. But rather than seeing it as part of recovery from a very traumatic experience. He would have beaten himself over the head with it, internally, because he would have seen flinching at fire as a weakness.

Billie Joe Armstrong literally wrote a song about coming out as bisexual as a teenager, and then like two years later wrote one that was pretty much all about dressing up in drag and getting fucked by/fucking guys, and y'all STILL say he’s a “straight ally” because he married a woman??

The same goes for Freddy Mercury and David Bowie. Both were openly bi. Both wrote (multiple) songs about their queerness. Both are pigeonholed as either “gay” or “straight”. They were both neither of those things.

hey remember when freddy mercury wrote a literal song about wanting to be allowed to be bisexual without it being a big deal and was incredibly obvious about it and then straighties went “oh lol look at how quirky queen is writing a song all about bicycles!”

somethingtodowithpotter:

I have a theory that the valued quality of each of the four Houses isn’t really about the personality of its students.

The valued quality of each of the four Houses has to do with how they perceive magic.

Stick with me a second: Hogwarts is a school to study magic. Magic as Hogwarts teaches it can be seen as many things: a natural talent, a gift, a weapon, etc.

So how you believe magic should be used will both reflect your personality and change how you handle that power.

“Their daring, nerve, and chivalry set Gryffindors apart,” Gryffindors perceive magic as a weapon. Gryffindors tend to excel in aggressive forms of magic, like offensive and defensive spells, and they are good at dueling. But a true Gryffindor knows that the power is a responsibility, and so they must always use their powers to stand up for what’s right. They are the sword of the righteous, which makes them as good at Defense Against the Dark Arts as they are at combat magic.

Hufflepuffs believe that magic is a gift and that the best gifts are to be given away. Hufflepuffs, “loyal and just,” would naturally abhor the idea of jealously guarding magic or using it to hurt someone else. So Hufflepuffs share their magic to benefit of Muggles, like the Fat Friar, to protect the overlooked, like Newt Scamander with his creatures, or to oppose those who would use magic to torment and bully, like the Hufflepuffs who stood with the DA and the battle of Hogwarts.

Slytherins are the opposite: they believe their magic is a treasure that they have been entrusted to protect. The Slytherin fascination with purity, with advantage, with cunning and secrecy–all of which were perverted by the Death Eaters–comes from the idea that people with magic in their veins have been given something special that it is their duty to protect at all costs. And perhaps they aren’t entirely wrong: power in the wrong hands can be dangerous. And power interfering at will with Muggle affairs is a gross presumption that could turn the course of history. Though the series shows some of the worst that Slytherin can be, “evil,” is not a natural Slytherin tendency. “Cautious,” is.

Ravenclaws believe that magic is an art form, one that is beautiful and should be appreciated and studied for its own sake. If “wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure,” then asking what magic is for is useless. It’s more important to immerse oneself in magic for its own sake. Ravenclaws push the boundaries of magic to see if they can, hence Hermione’s spell experiment on the DA coins being dubbed a Ravenclaw quality, but like Luna Lovegood in the pursuit of extraordinary creatures: they can also be content to plumb the depths of what already exists.

So while you can see where personalities will overlap over Houses, perhaps in Sorting we should be asking ourselves less what we think we are and more what we think we believe.

that’s much more interesting and substantive than “brave, smart, evil, miscellaneous”

Also even though Disney keeps playing up this whole “oh yeah this is definitely the end of the Skywalker Saga” angle, since we all know that’s bullshit and they’ll be back at it the minute they think they can get some more cash out of this thing and/or kids who grew up with the ST are old enough to be nostalgic and want to see their faves again, I want to go on record now as wanting the overarching story to be “Sidious keeps showing up every 30 years or so in one form or another, and whichever Skywalkers happen to be around have to thwart him again like some sort of neverending Dark Side Whack-a-Mole game”.

“If autism isn’t caused by environmental factors and is natural why didn’t we ever see it in the past?”

We did, except it wasn’t called autism it was called “Little Jonathan is a r*tarded halfwit who bangs his head on things and can’t speak so we’re taking him into the middle of the cold dark forest and leaving him there to die.”

Or “little Jonathan doesn’t talk but does a good job herding the sheep, contributes to the community in his own way, and is, all around, a decent guy.” That happened a lot, too, especially before the 19th century.

Or, backing up FURTHER

and lots of people think this very likely,

“Oh little Sionnat has obviously been taken by the fairies and they’ve left us a Changeling Child who knows too much, and asks strange questions, and uses words she shouldn’t know, and watches everything with her big dark eyes, clearly a Fairy Child and not a Human Like Us.”

The Myth of the Changeling child, a human baby apparently replaced at a young age by a toddler who “suddenly” acts “strange and fey” is an almost textbook depiction of autistic children.

To this day, “autism warrior mommies” talk about autism “stealing” their “sweet normal child” and have this idea of “getting their real baby back” which (in the face of modern science)  indicates how the human psyche actually does deal with finding out their kid acts unlike what they expected.

Given this evidence, and how common we now know autism actually is, the Changeling myth is almost definitely the result of people’s confusion at the development of autistic children.

Weirdly enough, that legend is now comforting to me.

I think it’s worth noting that many like me, who are diagnosed with ASD now, would probably have been seen as just a bit odd in centuries past. I’m only a little bit autistic; I can pass for neurotypical for short periods if I work really hard at it. I have a lack of talent in social situations, and I’m prone to sensory overload or you might notice me stimming.

But here’s the thing: life is louder, brighter and more intense and confusing than it has ever been. I live on the edge of London and I rarely go into the centre of town because it’s too overwhelming. If I went back in time and lived on a farm somewhere, would anyone even notice there was anything odd about me? No police sirens, no crowded streets that go on for miles and miles, no flickery electric lights. Working on a farm has a clear routine. I’d be a badass at spinning cloth or churning butter because I find endless repetition soothing rather than boring.

I’m not trying to romanticise the past because I know it was hard, dirty work with a constant risk of premature death. I don’t actually want to be a 16th century farmer! What I’m saying is that disability exists in the context of the environment. Our environment isn’t making people autistic in the sense of some chemical causing brain damage. But we have created a modern environment which is hostile to autistic people in many ways, which effectively makes us more disabled. When you make people more disabled, you start to see more people struggling, failing at school because they’re overwhelmed, freaking out at the sound of electric hand dryers and so on. And suddenly it looks like there’s millions more autistic people than existed before.

“…disability exists in the context of the environment.”

Reblog for disability commentary.

That last paragraph is absolutely important.

It’s a limited resource ;)

holy fucking shit people simulated the 302 neurons in a worm’s brain with software, put it in a Lego robot and it behaves like a worm

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/weve-put-worms-mind-lego-robot-body-180953399/?no-ist

upload the nematode

upload the nematode / lock it in a box / keep it there for fifty years / then see if it talks!

but, like, it’s a worm. its behavior isn’t that complex.

if it’s not accurately behaving like a worm, how would we tell?

^ an important point. IIRC they don’t even really have a complete characterization of the worm’s nervous system, so C. legogans here is at best a preliminary test. Still pretty cool, though.

I looked at the article, and to my mind the significant thing here is that the lego robot demonstrated consistent behavior with no programming.  They didn’t program any stimulus-response behavior into it.  They just gave it their best approximation of worm neurons, and it made up the behavior.

I may be misunderstanding some aspect of this but to me that feels kinda huge?

They made an artifical reactive set of neurons with consistent observable behaviors. Yeah, this is a big deal. It’s the first step towards ‘uploading’ minds.

oh, worm?

You wouldn’t download a worm

There is literally an entire Amanda Bynes movie about this

“The footage was filmed as part of an experiment for Spanish TV show El Hormiguero to ‘destroy some of the myths’ around women’s football.

El Hormiguero script writer Jordi Molto said: ‘Women’s football doesn’t have any presence alongside men’s football which receives all the media attention.’

‘Some people might say women haven’t got the same physical capacity or the same strength but this shows the technique can be the same and women and men with a ball at their feet can put on the same spectacle.‘”

What the Right calls “censorship” is usually actually censure– people meeting them with strong disapproval.

What the Right calls for in return is usually actual censorship– asking ruling bodies and institutions to limit the freedom of expression.

Calling for counter-rallies against fascist recruiters: Censure.
Calling for universities to cancel “social justice” courses: Censorship.

Is it cool if I quote you this? Its a great explaintion, but its something I doubt id come up with myself.

My ideas are all yours to use.

Starkiller Base becomes a new star in its system and is now a binary system!

From The Force Awakens (2015) and Star Wars: Battlefront II Resurrection DLC.

So Hux’s superweapon transformed into a star? Interesting! Sorry if it was a common fact but I always thought that it exploded like the Death Star for some reason.
