I HATE Elon Musk saying shit about how we need to preserve humanity by making other planets inhabitable before Earth isn’t inhabitable… if we can make MARS, a genuine lifeless shithole, or any other barren planet near us, into a habitable planet, why not just do that to post-climate disaster Earth? The planet that specifically suits our species? I’ve talked about this before but like, Earth will ALWAYS be more habitable than any other planet because we specifically evolved to survive here, even if it gets fucked up by climate change, living on here will still be better than living on mars or the fucking moon or whatever.

EARTH is a unique phenomena and if we lose it we will probably NEVER find anything like it again. This isn’t fucking Star Trek. I doubt we’re gonna find an “M Class Planet” or whatever within close range of travel. This is the world we have. If we can “FIX” some freezing lifeless rock like Mars than we can fix earth.

As a Jew, I have been worried about ICE for a while now. I started noticing scary similarities to the holocaust around the time when the news was covering children being separated from their parents- over a year ago. The parallels have only gotten clearer. People are being raped, gassed, tortured, and killed in there, with little hope of escape or help.

Some scary similarities to the concentration camps if the holocaust-

Gassing people

Separating parents and children

Overcrowding

Poor hygiene

Poor food

Restricting outside access into the centers

Trump administration spreading propaganda against immigrants that is incredibly similar to antisemetic propaganda from nazi Germany

Please, please talk about this. Spread this. Let others know what’s happening to these innocent people. Tell your representatives that you will not allow this to continue. We need to abolish ICE. We need to save these people and find these children before they are killed outright. It is already too late for many of them. People have died. People have been traumatized and scarred for life. But it is in our power to help them, and we must. So please, don’t let this go unnoticed. Don’t be complicit. It doesn’t take long to hit reblog, and it could save lives.

Never Again Action is a wonderful organization dedicated to this cause- consider helping them out!

yours-for-never:

Please pay attention to this

The ICE is THIS >< near of poisoning the detained immigrants with HDQ Neutral. It’s a highly harmful disinfectant if inhaled or swallowed. It is sprayed many times every day, almost every 15 minutes, which makes a total of about 96 times. None of the poeple that are detained there are given mask or glasses to protect them. Also, women have been getting raped and no one bats an eye, and more children’s have gone “mysteriously missing”. They like to pretend we don’t know that they go to child sex trafficking circles. They are using the disinfectant as a chemical weapon towards innocent people, they have been abusing them, raping them and killing them. This all happens behind closed door, thinking we are not going to find it out. Here it is a petition to help the people who are being slowly killed by this harmful chemical:

STOP ICE FROM POISONING IMMIGRANTS!

another important thing about solidarity within queer communities is that so many of us will identify with different labels (especially when we are young/still figuring out that we aren’t straight & cis to begin with) before figuring out how we identify longterm. E.g. gay people who start out identifying as bi, trans men who initially identify as butch lesbians, asexuals who at first identify as bisexual (because hey, that’s technically being equally attracted to multiple genders), and so on. In fact, most queer people, at one time or another, identified as cishet. So we of all people should be aware that figuring out our identities takes time, and is a winding path.

And this is why solidarity in our communities is so important. And why gatekeeping is so dangerous. Because not only is each part of our community a longterm home, sanctuary, and support system for people of a certain identity, we also provide a path and an unofficial Welcoming Committee to new members of the wider LGBTQA+ community (especially young queer people, for whom a supportive welcoming is so important). And in turn, many of the people who find their way to us will be coming from a different part of the rainbow path. This is also why bigotry is so so damaging when it comes from within our communities, and why we each of us have a responsibility to examine our prejudices and acknowledge that being queer doesn’t automatically give us a pass–we are just as capable of bigotry as anyone on the outside, and in a unique position to do harm from within. Fight transphobia, fight aphobia, fight biphobia, fight racism and ableism and discrimination wherever you see it in our communities. And more than that, celebrate ALL the colors on our flags, and all of the diverse communities they represent. Solidarity makes us so much more powerful, as a community and as individuals. So I’d like to start by saying:

Welcome, everyone. It’s good to have you here.

Everyone jokes about Ba Sing Se seeing Zuko and being like, “Lee from the tea shop?” but Iroh!!! Iroh! People need to make jokes about Iroh!

Because just imagine you’re a civilian in Ba Sing Se and you, like your neighbors, and your neighbors’ neighbors, know that The Jasmine Dragon has the best tea in the city. Only you show up one day, and the shop is abandoned. Soon after, the Fire Nation invades, and you find yourself worrying less about tea and more about surviving. You hold your family close as the troops march past your house. You do what you can to stay alive.

One day, you hear a bunch of crashes, and you look outside to see a small group of men wearing robes with white lotus tiles on them. You can only stare in awe as they begin to liberate an entire city. And leading them is…

“Honey, remember Mushi, the sweet old man from the tea shop?”

“Of course, the kindest soul around!”

“Yeah…he just annihilated like fifty tanks in a single breath.”

I just imagine the majority of Ba Sing Se was like:

But then, The Jasmine Dragon opens back up?!

Just imagine what it must be like to shuffle on inside, where ‘Mushi’ happily greets you with a warm cup and a warmer smile.

“………Okay, sir, I have to ask…were you the one who single-handedly took out a dozen soldiers on the corner of my street?”

“Ah, my friend, sometimes, we’re meant to be like this tea, stagnant and peaceful, giving someone else happiness and warmth. Othertimes, we’re meant to punch the oppressors in the face as hard as we can.”

“…”

“…Would you like to hear today’s specials?”

“Yes, please.”

FIC: Something Wicked

Kylo and Armitage have been friends since they were kids. Now in university, they run a semi-popular YouTube channel called “London Below” where they investigate all sorts of haunted and paranormal happenings in and around London and try to answer the question, are ghosts real? When they take on the mysterious and tragic case of the Pendle Witches, they come face to face with the spirit world in a way they never have before. Will they make it out of Pendle alive? Are ghosts real? And most importantly, does Armitage return Kylo’s affections?

So my favourite film hit half a decade while I wasn’t paying attention. So, glory to Fury Road, a testament to just what blockbuster filmmaking can achieve.

Considering that we so often accept bland, cookie-cutter bundles of amiable banter and action that just “looks cool”, it’s quite miraculous. A two-and-a-half hour chase film which weaves tragedy, redemption and societal commentary into its fabric, all while lacing its action with blood-stirring drama and white-knuckle peril. To say nothing of crafting dozens of resonant images which burn themselves on the back of the eye.

And yes, I still well up at the final “witness me”.

cannot believe I have to say this but when you are posting a translated literary work, include the name of the translator! translation is hard work, often thankless, and it is also just as much a creative act as writing a novel or delivering a lecture.

and also, to do otherwise is highly dishonest! translation is an art highly dependent, first and foremost, on interpretation. no two translations will be the same! no translated work can mirror the original text exactly, no more than we can rebuild Babel. when you read Crime and Punishment in English, you are not only listening to the voice of Dostoyevsky— you are listening to the voice of the translator. credit them! you would not have access to the work otherwise; you owe the translator a debt.

Sounds kind of bold to say it’s as hard as writing the novel itself ?

it’s not bold if you view translation as a creative act. I don’t know if you speak another language, but if you do you probably know that nothing is ever directly translatable. let’s take a simple example of English to German— languages which are closely related.

in German, if I want to say I am hungry I will say ‘Ich habe Hunger’. most literally, this would be translated as ‘I have hunger’. so you have an immediate difference from English. but you don’t translate it as ‘I have hunger’ because this is not said in English. in German, hunger is something you have. in English, it is something that describes you.

let’s say you are reading a book in German. in the book, a six year old child says ‘Ich habe hunger’. you would not translate it as ‘I have hunger’ because six year old children do not speak like that in English (unless they’re messing up the grammar— but this context is absent in the original German). so the translator might translate it as ‘I’m hungry’, because they are not only bound by literalism— they are bound by meaning and context.

but let’s consider this again. maybe one of the main themes of story is about the physicality of hunger. ‘I’m hungry’ does not emphasize its physicality. in German, hunger is something you have. in English, it is something that describes you. there’s an immediate difference there— possession (you have hunger like you would have a physical thing). so perhaps, with this context, the translator might choose to translate the child’s words as ‘I have hunger’ because it is important to stay faithful to the theme.

translation is dependent on interpretation. how you interpret the word—its meaning, its context— will change how you translate. and interpretation is a creative act.

for further reading recommendations, I would read Ilya Kaminskly’s “Of Strangeness That Wakes Us” and Anne Carson’s “Variations on the Right to Remain Silent”. I have other recommendations as well, if you are interested, but both of these essays touch on the necessary creativity of translation.

As a novelist who has studied Ancient Greek, take it from me — translating is JUST as hard (if not harder) and the translator makes a heck of a difference

For example— here’s a bit of The Iliad translated by one Samuel Butler:

“Old man,“ said he, “let me not find you tarrying about our ships, nor yet coming hereafter.”

And for comparison’s sake, I dug out my old class notes to give you MY translation:

“You geezer, I don’t wanna find you loitering around my boats now or ever again!”

Both translations are technically accurate and convey roughly the same meaning, but the two versions are very much not the same

Dumpster diving tip:

if you find A LOT of any one thing, for example, a pharmacy throws out 10 boxes full of the same soap? That might be due to a recall, and you might be handling something potentially dangerous.

When a manufacturer is responsible for releasing a dangerous product, they refund all the buyers, including retailers and customers. So retailers end up being forced to throw away the product now that they legally can’t sell it. And that’s where we come in.

Some recalls expose truly dangerous risks, like a food borne illness reported in say, dog treats. Other times, it could be something like “undeclared peanuts” in a noodle bowl. So if you’re not allergic to peanuts, it’s still safe.

The important part is to always check your country’s recalls if you come across any ridiculous amount of anything. Even though recalls don’t happen a lot, (most waste is inherent to capitalism) this is key to staying safe as dumpster divers. So be safe, be bountiful, and go dumpster diving ♻️

the fact that apple took an entire product market and changed not just the product, but the market, to fit to their desire… like, electronic products are supposed to last, they are made to last for extended periods of time, that’s the point. but then apple came along, and they suddenly realized they could change the whole game, because they got ahead on the smartphone trend and every other company was looking to them to decide what to do. so apple created “generations”. usually, if your product isn’t broken, you don’t need a new one. you don’t need to reenter the market. but they found a way to convince people, “oh, but just because you don’t need a new one, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get a new one. look, this new one is way cooler than the old one!” they turned a smartphone into a fashion piece, something that you should only have if it’s “in-season”. and people fall for it, hook-line-and-sinker, obediantly waiting in lines the week of the new iphone release while they have what should be a perfectly good phone sitting in their pocket, which is promptly going to be either sold third party for pocket change compared to the original price, or thrown straight into a landfill. perfectly fine, working parts, rare and valuable things, thrown straight away. but then, then, apple realized they could go further with it. because not everyone was doing that, and in fact many people either couldn’t or didn’t want to get replacements for their perfectly-good products, and that is how they became the forefront of planned obsolesence. if they had their hardware components abruptly stop working, people would become upset and outraged, and would demand investigation. so they turned to software. they said, “every once in a while, your device will need to update. these updates are good, because they will bring you new and improved features!”- but that was only half-true. if your phone was new, yes, this would happen, but if it was older, the update would slightly degrade it, so much so that you wouldn’t notice it. but then after only a couple of years, you would notice it- your phone slowing down, lagging randomly, maybe a few weird glitches here and there, not enough to brick your phone but enough to make its original sleekness seem distant. and you would be frustrated, and you would wonder why this was happening, and apple would reach down and say, “why, that is because your phone is getting old. you need the next generation!” so then even those resistant to change would be forced to get a new phone every couple of generations, and anyone who didn’t was fully seen as an outcast or an idiot. and apple realized how well this work, and they extended it in full to tablets and computers, and other companies took note, and they began to very slowly do the same. and now, instead of electronics being the old, ugly tv your grandparents have that still works, or the vintage computer in your dad’s attic that has a graphical hole in the corner but still works, or your aunt’s old record player that has gather decades’ worth of grime and dust but still works, electronics is your friend’s beautiful, clean iphone from two and a half years ago that has the capacity to do a thousand things, but it won’t turn on because the charger port is fried, and when you ask them why, they go, “oh, it’s out of season.”

scientist voice: today i will be a dick to this cricket

The phrase “exposed to this spider torment” will haunt me

People in the notes have entirely misunderstood the point of this experiment and what it entails.

It’s not “proving that crickets can be traumatized”. It’s proving that *animals can genetically pass on the stress that a dangerous situation causes, and the offspring will instinctually respond to the same situation without ever having personally experienced it.*

And that’s a big deal for many things, including human psychology.

When Nazis invaded The Netherlands, local Dutch peoples were under extreme emotional and physical duress. The Nazi army took their food for the soldiers, starving the population. They patrolled the streets and harshly reinforced their new laws. Existence was horrible and some parents had to give their children away to wealthier families because they couldn’t feed them anymore. This event is known as the Hongerwinter, or Dutch Famine.

One generation later, the children of mothers who were pregnant at the time of the famine have been proven to exhibit intense reactions to stress, and heightened fight or flight responses. They also experience more obesity because their bodies are prepared for starvation.

Some of these children were never personally exposed to the famine. Their mothers gave birth after conditions had improved, or even after moving to another country. But the effects are there, and those people are now adults who can recognize this and attest that they didn’t experience something else traumatic during childhood. It was passed on in the womb.

You can read about it here: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2018/01/31/science/dutch-famine-genes.amp.html

The Famine Ended 70 Years Ago, but Dutch Genes Still Bear Scars

This is called epigenetics. It’s essential to understanding how the human brain and body works. That our responses to stress can be passed on genetically. That it can show up in how we look physically, our physical health, our mental responses, our instinctual reactions. It’s especially important for people who are in therapy and need to understand *why* they act a certain way before they can actually work on it.

So no, this experiment wasn’t “haha let’s torment a cricket”. I’m not going to argue the potential cruelty of the experiment with people. I just want you to understand what it actually all MEANS.

Police are beating and arresting journalists and protesters nightly in our city. It’s bad.

phoenixonwheels:

“I’m safe.

“I hope everyone is okay.

“The Portland Police lost control tonight.

“The only reason I made it home safely tonight is because my community had my back.

“The Police declared a public disturbance right as we arrived, before anything could even be disturbed, and they attacked us minutes later.

“In spite of a national moratorium and a restraining order, the police used tear gas on a crowd that included children, in the neighborhood filled with families, families who were on their porches supporting the people.

“Police targeted streamers and journalists who were documenting their crimes, brutalizing them while screaming “stop resisting” to people who were laying on the ground with their arms covering their heads.

“Police shot impact munitions and pepper bullets at people who were doing nothing but standing on a sidewalk or in the blocked off road, deliberately shooting people in the face, neck, and groin.

“Police deliberately hit people in the head with batons and trampled over those who were doing nothing but peacefully sitting in protest of police brutality.

“Tonight, the Portland Police broke the national moratorium on the use of teargas in non-life-threatening situations.

“Tonight, the Portland Police disregarded the local court order banning the use of teargas in non life-threatening situations.

“Tonight, the Portland Police broke their contract with this city and they need to be held accountable.

“The Portland Police ignored the Constitution of the United States and stole our first amendment right to assemble.

“If the police are the ones who are breaking the law - ignoring our protections under the Constitution, ignoring a national moratorium on teargas, ignoring a direct order from a judge - if the police are the criminals, and if the mayor supports their criminal activities, what recourse do the people have?

“If the police can break any law whenever they want, without consequence, if they can target journalists, if they can brutalize peaceful protesters, if they can gas an entire neighborhood filled with families, if they are exempt from acknowledging the protections of the Constitution of the United States - and there is literally nothing we can do about it because City Hall said so in the contract they signed with these pigs, then it is the DUTY of the mayor and City Hall to end this contract that endangers the entire city.

“It is a contract that allows the police to do anything they want to anyone in Portland for any reason that they see fit, and have zero consequences for it.

“This is the contract that the mayor signed with these animals.

“I want to file a lawsuit. I want to take every possible peaceful step to find recourse. I want to believe that there is a legal way to get justice. Because if we cannot find recourse politically, peacefully, then it confirms that we don’t live in a free country. If we don’t live in free country, then we live under tyranny. If we live under tyranny, then it is our duty - to ourselves, to our children, and to future generations - to fight for our liberation by any means necessary. And believe it or not, that is the last thing I want.”

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:

The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:

And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:

It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:

So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!

HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG

i just saw someone get called a “demon” for self-identifying as queer by someone with f*g in their url

im actually over caring how harsh it sounds on yalls ears

blacklist it if it triggers your ptsd that bad

you’re not allowed to compromise trans women’s safety and demonize our elders because you’re sheltered enough to think nono words are the biggest threat to our way of life & you’re too ignorant to know your history

i dont care what galaxy brain discourse you saw. i, and every trans woman i know, am telling you that stigmatizing the word queer is choosing terfs over us

cis ppl should reblog this but dont say anything

Ah, here is a Fact I recently learned about sourdough starters!

(remember those? I still have mine! It’s still going!)

Whole wheat flour makes the starter more active, faster. There are enzymes present in high-quality whole wheat flour that the yeast uses to grow.

White flour will be considerably less bubbly and active, and will not puff up nearly as much. It can also go much longer between feedings.

I’ve had to transition my starter back and forth, from wheat to white and back, a couple of times based on non-availability of specific flour in my nomadic travels (I’ve done so somewhat gradually each time, if I can, tapering off the old flour and onto the new flour as much as I can), and I can tell you that on an all-white diet, my starter becomes much less bubbly and more of a uniform paste. I even sometimes think it’s dead; I can leave it several days and it looks like the last time I fed it. But it’s not dead. I haven’t refrigerated it for more than an intermittent couple of days, and it hasn’t done anything worse than smell vaguely of vinegar or acetone once in a while. And if I put whole wheat flour in it, with a couple hours of digestion time it is as vigorous as it ever has been, and crawls up the side of the jar.

So I just thought I’d put that out there, because I haven’t seen anything else written about this–  white flour is much more forgiving because it takes longer for the starter to chew through it. Whole wheat is more satisfying and I like the texture and flavor better, but white flour will keep it alive and it doesn’t take much. I’ve kept mine alive on about two tablespoons every other day or so for the last month.

(People say you should be consistent with flour but they also say a lot of things, and I’m sure they’re not wrong, but sometimes my best is not what they say it ought to be so I’m used to this sort of thing.)

“Cis” and “TERF” aren’t slurs, but claiming that they are over and over again until the mainstream press is unwilling to use them because they want to avoid controversy is a wonderful way of denying a marginalised group the vocabulary to discuss their own oppression. This is, of course, 100% the point.

You will also note the projection in that “trying to control language” is precisely what they accuse us of doing.
