Thinking about Cardinal/Archex and Hux…it’s COMPLICATED. Obviously we as an audience know Armitage was not a “spoiled child”, given his father’s bullying and abuse.
However, if you consider Archex’s situation when Brendol “saved” him? Well, Armitage probably seemed spoiled and soft by comparison. He was adequately fed, clothed, etc. and, in Archex’s mind, probably didn’t seem to appreciate what he had.
We also don’t know how far Brendol went in terms of abusing Armitage in Archex’s presence. Armitage clearly thinks that Archex was aware of how Brendol treated him, and I do think it’s very likely he turned a blind eye to what he did see or hear, or tried to rationalise it, which…isn’t great.
But it’s very understandable since, when it comes down to it, both boys were manipulated by Brendol for a significant portion of their lives. Brendol wanted Archex to hate Armitage. He wanted Armitage to feel isolated. Because if the two of them actually got along? That could have been very, very dangerous for him.
I was just thinking about this, - how Brendol payed them against each other. He’s always been obsessed with forcing the children under his control to fight each other, it’s part of his ‘survival of the fittest’ mindset and he did it at Arkanis Academy too (making cadets kill another cadet to get into his inner circle).
Archex and Armitage were both children swept up in a brutal regime, in the “care” of a horrible man whose goal was to push these children to be as strong and hard and cruel as he could, while also keeping them divided to protect his own position. They were both being trained to perform for Brendol and the First Order in very different ways (Archex/Cardinal to be a strong fighter and a good trooper and Armitage to be a tactical thinker and a leader without as many practical skills) and both were taught to look down on the way the other was trained. Archex thinks Armitage is soft, Armitage thinks Archex is an idiot. Together they probably would have been a force to be reckoned with but they were played against one another from the moment they were brought together.
And its a common tactic abusers use on children, putting siblings (and in many ways Amitage and Archex are like siblings) in positions where they constantly have to throw each other under the bus so that at least it isn’t them bearing the brunt of the abuse. It leads to those children directing as much of their anger at each other as at the abuser. Its insidious and horrendous and horribly effective.
Yes, exactly! When I originally typed out this post it was in response to discussion about Cardinal/Archex’s behaviours towards Hux as being abusive (without necessarily acknowledging that he, too, was a victim of Brendol’s abuse).
Totally agree that they were taught and encouraged to look down on one another’s skills and training - thank you for that A++ addition!

realest hot take the world is not ready for
literally how do people see general hux as this like…unimportant side character who’s just there to be the Not-Kylo Villain?? that fucker was in fact extremely important.
think about it. why was the first order winning for most of the war? better tactics and vastly superior technology. who was their chief tactician and engineer responsible for designing and overseeing the production of that superior technology? hux.
the resistance won, though, in the end. how did they win? because they had advance notice of the sith fleet. they barely had time even with that advance notice; they would definitely have lost without it. how did they get that intel? from a spy in the first order who leaked it to them. who was that spy? oh that’s right it was hux.
bottom line, hux won the war. whichever side won, it would have been because of him. “side character” my FOOT
I’ve said this before, but I’mma say it again:
People laughed about how Hux repeated all of Kylo’s orders in the command shuttle, but they forget that the TROOPERS are programmed/trained to follow Snoke or Hux’s orders.
It’s been what, two hours, three hours tops since Snoke’s death at that point? I seriously doubt there was enough time to rewire an entire fleet’s staff. Sure, the officers are different, and they will obey Kylo because they’re wanting to live but the troopers are not as quick on the uptake because they’re conditioned to listen to HUX.
So naturally, Hux is going to repeat the orders quickly so Kylo doesn’t go apeshit on his men- Kylo stabs at Hux in TFA about his men not following orders, and Kylo had just force choked him earlier, so it’s likely a combo of self preservation and the desire to avoid further dissent in the ranks by helping keep the chain of command going, because at this point, is it possible Kylo would lose his shit and take it out on the troopers and cause a massive loss because of his temper? All previous signs point to yes. (Especially since they just saw Kylo fling Hux against the bulkhead of the Upsilion)
Kylo would not have been able to run the Order without Hux, and it’s probably really good timing that Kylo fucked off on his own around the same time Hux was outed as a spy.

Hux’s Escape Strategy

Okay, so for some reason, Hux doesn’t leave on the Falcon. Fine.
What if, he had his own escape plan that didn’t involve the resistance? When if he got on an escape shuttle he’d been prepping for a long time with food and tea, a copy of “The Art Historian’s Guide to Grand Admiral Thrawn” and Millicent’s paraphernalia? What if he hobbled to med-bay, hobbled to his quarters, loaded up Millie in her kitty krate, carried her to the shuttle, left the ship under a cloaking device, and then hyperspaced the fuck outta there?
This is my headcanon. He had time to go back to his quarters and stick a bandage round his leg, so he also had time to put on body armour and send Millicent by droid to the hangar where his shuttle is waiting.
He’s had a year of being a spy to prepare a contingency plan for being discovered. He’s figured out that it’s best if the Order and the Republic believes he’s dead before he moves on to his new life. That way no one’s going to come looking for him to drag him to justice.
If he has one character trait at all, it’s being a survivor, so I regard all of this as obviously implied by canon :)
