Today is Kvitna/Verbna Nedilya (Blooming/Willow Sunday, i.e. Palm Sunday).

After the pussy willow branches have been blessed in church, people symbolically tap friends, family and passers-by with the branches for strength, happiness and health.

Не я б'ю — верба б'є {i do not tap – it is the willow that taps}
За тиждень — Великдень {easter comes in one week}
Будь дужий, як вода {be strong as the water}
А багатий, як земля {and rich as the earth}

Here are some curious traditions connected with this holy day: the catkins were swallowed as a precaution against fever and sore throats. They were also mixed into kasha (porridge) in the belief that all the willow’s spring potential and energy would pass into the person.

After the blessed willow is brought home, the branches are placed behind the icons hanging on the walls, to keep away unclean, evil spirits). The branches are also planted in the garden. If the willow takes, the young folks of the family will marry and be healthy. They were also carried around the home, barn and beehives to ensure fertility of the animals and a good yield of honey. Water wells were surrounded by willows to protect them from evil powers, and to ensure that the water remained pure and strength-giving.

The previous year’s willow branches were used to light the oven for baking paska and babka (Easter breads). They cannot be thrown into the trash, but must be burnt. In many localities, blessed willow branches were placed into the caskets of the dead.

The verba’s branches and roots represent the ancestors and the family tree. It was also believed that the willow is the sky holding up the sun. Because it grows so quickly, it was believed to have magical properties. Thus willow pieces were placed in the water in which a pregnant woman was bathed. – Euromaidan Press

filigranka reblogged your post and added: “huxsmug: grey-jedi-enters-the-game: huxsmug: galadhir: …”

This all still leaves with the need to explain why…

Wasn’t Starkiller Base mainly defended by safeguards that were built in to the machinery? Like the oscillator could only be shut down from the inside, and no one could get in from the outside short of pulling a maneuver that was thought to be impossible? That’s further proof of good engineering.

But yeah, why they are having their top engineer leading their navy rather than leaving him with a university full of eager minds on a highly fortified planet/ship somewhere in the Unknown Regions, where he can churn out new laws-of-hyperspace defying inventions on a more regular basis, idk. Seems a huge waste of resources.

As does killing him, to be frank. They should stick him in a comfy jail cell and have him create useful things that are not weapons instead.

Yup, I’ve no idea, I’d actually put my engineer in some tightly-controlled, but pretty nice tower, too, and make sure my enemies don’t know much about him, not push him on the posters and at the front. But perhaps this is a new twist in the classic list of “All Silly Mistakes EvilOverLords in Popculture Do”. ;)

“They should stick him in a comfy jail cell and have him create useful things that are not weapons instead.”

Weapons, too, every government needs weapons. ;)

Yup, that’s how it went in rl history, so if it was rl life history Hux could be perfectly sure he’s safe no matter what’s gonna do except irritating moody and irrational Supreme Leaders. No matter how many planets you kaboom, darling, the winning side would want you to create some more kabooms and other tech miracles for them.

I still think in the galaxy, when the whole trade is inter-planetarian, the whole tracker thing is actually wasted in the military (although I still not quite get how revolutionary it was, if in ANH Empire tracks Rebel base via Falcon. it was faster, so perhaps real-time was a crux here), the transport business - and this whole galaxy lives from the transport! smugglers, even the Naboo blockage it’s about transport - would love it, it would probably revolutionise the insurance market, too. They would get much more money on a market, and they’re wasting it for Leia’s merry little band?! (and now, I hope, DJ got the plans and he’s gonna make those money :D)

Hux only actual worry in something resembling logic/anything realistic should be, at most, to kill his whole tech team&destroy the notes if the Republic was winning&coming, to make sure he’s absolute irreplaceable. It would be even viable for them to torture him, because in the tech projects of such magnitude a one wrongly given number can be absolutely unnoticeable until a millions of credits/months later - and so tortures wouldn’t be a viable method of getting the info.

persnoal writing digression: heh, this is what’s happening in all my fics, because I cannot shake rl from my id ;). the Republic is very hurt and angry, sure, but they just cannot kill such a money, they need money to rebuild, and their enemies grew stronger, so they also need new, shiny weapons. c’est la vie. They’re gonna built a beautiful monument for Hosnian Prime’s victims and found the stipends for their families from, like, 5% of the Hux’s tech (immediately nationalised) profits. :D

But since it’s Disney. since they actually called this last ep Rise of… sob, sob, sob, now, I cannot say this… since I saw the teaser, I have no hope, no damn hope for any logic, sense or quality. I can hope the Second Coming will happen before December, at best. ;))

There’s the great term used both by my favourite gaming magazine and perfume blogers - “perfume/game/film/art created by accountants” and this is how I feel about ST now. I only hope they won’t do the remake of OT, but they probably will and this breaks my heart. It should be illegal. Something should happen - people crowfunding things and buying SW back from Disney? stories for the people, not for corporations!  - and stop this madness.

Oh, and re: Kylo’s cruelty, because knowing me I’ll never get to answer the longer posts - fandom doesn’t think he’s cruel? really? Hah, I’m out of tune, le typical, but me&my family&my rl friends has thought he’s shown as cruel and pretty… straightforwardly?. I’d not say I’m sure it’s his basic trait - it might be an off-shot of the Dark Side, Snoke’s influence, whatever - but he’s a character who’s joking ordering the execution of the village and starts the tortures from jokes. Damn, even though he obviously likes Rey, he still lord his power over her in TFA, in interrogation room. For me it all - the first two especially - was screaming cruelty and I thought it’s pretty obvious that’s how the authors intended it - perhaps not as a defining trait, but a sign of the cruelty born from the DS at least. I know which psychological mechanism may hide beneath it, but it hardly matter, it’s stil one of the cruellest thing you can do to others, the flippancy at their pain/fear, in real life, yeah, but also I think it’s pretty standard, quick way of showing us the character is evil/cruel/ruthless.

I’m actually at loss here how it can be not considered cruel, to be honest, so the whole thing is, I guess, some deep, instinct-level interpretation and therefore Hux might not be shown as cruel, either, I concede. Perhaps I’m too quick to see the pleasure born from power in the characters; oh well, we’re all oversensitive to our kinks. ;) I never see romances and the romantic tension, never, nope, totally. But the power play and power-games - my mind apparently treats those like sexual/romantic tension and notice it with overzealous attention. ;)

Maybe this is yet more evidence for the FO only having one higher ranked officer? Maybe Hux killed the rest of the High Council and that’s why he’s having to do everything himself now? ;)

But yeah, seriously, with that level of genius the man is a national treasure. Snoke would be stupid to get rid of him and so would the Republic. (Hux may not know this about the Republic, however, given that he’s been brought up to believe it’s hopelessly degenerate.) He’s also on less firm ground with Kylo, who clearly doesn’t like technology anyway and is all about burning down what he doesn’t like, whether or not it advances his interests.

Heh, yes, I don’t have great hopes for Disney’s storytelling in general. I expect only something of a similar sort of complexity as the Original Trilogy, as a best case scenario. But I’ll be happy if they prove me wrong. I liked the trailer and I’m excited again to find out what happens.

*G* I have only ever noticed people in fandom, even in the powers-that-be claiming that Hux was cruel - I haven’t noticed them saying that the same is true of Kylo. But I absolutely agree that Hux is full of the pleasure born from power. I’m more than willing to concede that they’re BOTH cruel. It’s the “Hux is a vile cruel monster and Kylo is a sensitive dark prince,” POV that I really can’t get behind.

(Well, I mean Kylo IS sensitive, and may technically be the prince of a dead planet, but frankly that doesn’t stop him from also being a cruel monster.)

“(Hux may not know this about the Republic, however, given that he’s been brought up to believe it’s hopelessly degenerate.)“

It’s not even about morality, it’s just - pragmatism. I’d sooner believe he didn’t quite get this because there’s still this tiny voice in his head telling him he’s useless. ;) And Republic’s Republic, FO’s FO, but there’re, EU tells us, other powers in the galaxy. Businessbeings. Criminal cartels. Hutts. Shipyards. And they all should be very, very interested, too. Give him a nice villa, alcohol, spice if he wants it, but not too much, and prostitutes, and let him count and draw. What more a man could wish for to rule the world. ;)

It’s a concept for a black comedy fic! all those parties trying to ensure they would get that wunderkind alive (and ending with Archimedes’ scenario. very black comedy) and doing a race to outrun TR, because everybody knows Leia/TR are a fanatics, Leia sacrificed her own planet for the cause (I very much doubt they care about her voice in that; it’s still a pretty striking image and the one which, for the pragmatic being, would be frightening no matter her [un]willingness), there’s the danger they’re gonna ideologically kill our money!

I’d probably also try to find his remaining family and if it’s Palps, all the better and use them as a leverage/hostage, tbh, no matter if I was the cartel or the Republic.

LOL! SW: Race for the Engineer. That could be hilarious, especially if Palpatine was involved. Imagine the patents, the possible business empires that could be built on these inventions. But yeah, they would all probably have to get through Hux’s fanaticism (and other personality disorders) first.

They could all live on Canto Bight’s beaches and drink drinks with the umbrellas! they could even fund stipends&academies for all those poor children, if they care so much!

Yes, yes, yes, exactly, I want my black comedy with heavy economical&political undertones in the background! “You go with us, we’re rescuing you” another guys in the door “No way, he’s going with us.”, while the base is of course falling down all around them, as it always is in the new adventure cinema! And ah, the whole comical chases, qui pro quo and action-adventure sequences we could have there! Indiana Jones and the Starkiller Blueprints (hmm, perhaps Maz paid Han something extra for getting not only his son, but also the intel… a shame he didn’t deliver, but maybe Chewie will). Lando’s being hired by great business&cartels&government&Maz to smuggle Hux out, because TR/Leia trusts ex-Rebels. And, by the way, the great return of Boba Fett and all others bounty hunters, Greedo including - and Hutts! and Qi’ra, for Disney merch department - could be pushed into this comedy, too. All  the pluses!

And nobody except a bunch of TR’s and FO’s soldiers care about the whole political system, war and the ideology which will rule the galaxy. “Do you promise to lower the taxes? You have my vote. And my blaster.” Economics wonder if Starkiller attack on Hosnian wasn’t just a manoeuvre to destabilise the currency market/credits and raise the value of the metal&hard cash currencies, because FO has a lot of those - and therefore, the worth of their budget got, like, 1000x bigger with this one shot (perhaps this is what actually Peavey and the rest of the old Imperial think) - and this is the most rational explanation to them.

It’d be hilarious, especially if Hux was oblivious to all this. Classic slapstick. It would work greatly as a 5-minute YT short animation, too. Humour&action for the youngest audience, black comedy&economy for the adults. I want this so much now, I even see how they could target this. :D

(tbh, Maratelle sorta does so in this long fic of mine. striking the deal with NR, too)

May I get in a form of the RTS or turn-based strategy game, too? :D You’re building units and things to race to get the Engineer and over-powered new buildings first! Huge boost for the economy!

…I think it might be possible to make Civ mod like this? I mean, somebody would have to make the visuals&animations - although I’m sure there’re some SW Civ mods already - but except for this…

Sim game would work, too, but I don’t like sim games.

@merryloon - are there mods for Empire at War? :D

More seriously or if it was a really black comedy:

LOL! I love the idea that Hux designed Kylo’s TIE fighter too small for him out of malice :) That’s genius :)

I also love the idea of this slapstick series! It’s not really Star Wars, I guess - not epic and fairy-tale enough - but it would be enormously entertaining :) It would probably work as a role playing game scenario too. Is there a SW role playing game? There really ought to be - the universe is easily big enough to support one.

I agree that it should be possible to persuade Hux that his goals were achievable by inventing things rather than by just bombing them. Torture would probably be counterproductive, and I’m not sure he has any people who could be used as leverage over him. But he’s weak for praise from authority figures, so just telling him that if he really cares about the Outer Rim, then inventing something to make people wealthier there might work, especially if he was then praised to high heavens for it and allowed to go on a lecture tour where people actually wanted to listen to him talk.

On the coercion side I agree with you here, “The forced lack of action, putting someone without many stimuli can be a pretty effective pressure/breaking method and I think for someone like Hux nicely.”

I read a great fic that started with this - he was put on mandatory leave for three days or something and ended up slitting his own throat as a result. (He gets better.) I’m sure I’ve got it bookmarked somewhere. I think you might like it if you haven’t already read it.

So I noticed that there’s a panel on ships and romance in the Star Wars universe at Celebration today. According to the description they will mainly talk about Han/Leia and also Reylo. Would be nice if someone in the audience scream Kylux, just sayin! 😂

Here’s the thing - there are some ships that should not be canon. Mainly because they contradict the established canon ship. Also, if the ship does not have enough canon material to make it seem like good writing/relatable to the audience. I mean, really, I’d be pitching a fit if Chewie/Rey was the featured ship of TROS, because there’s been no lead-up to such a thing.

I absolutely adore a LOT of ships that shouldn’t be canon the way canon is constructed right now. Kylux, Gingerpilot, Stormpilot, Leia/Holdo, Holdo/Poe, Leia/Hux, Rey/Hux, Hux/Rose, etc. Love ‘em!

All that said though, I wish fandom was a welcoming place for non-canon ships. I wish I didn’t have to defend my interest and joy in such ships. There is an attitude out there that if it isn’t canon, it shouldn’t be talked about, people shouldn’t like it, they shouldn’t cheer for the idea or happily latch onto every bit of canon that they could use to fuel their personal head-canon for this other ship.

Oscar Isaac seems to ‘get it’. He’s like, ‘Yeah, fine, people like imagining Poe being in love with all these people? YEAH! Poe loves all of them! He takes his love very seriously. He’s a lover. And a fighter. Poe’s great. He would totally satisfy all his lovers. He might even have kids. M-preg? Sure. Maybe. He’d be a good father/mother, too. He’d love his beautiful children, no matter who he had them with. Whatever you want to come up with. He’s a good guy. We need more good guys out there.’

That’s the answer I want. No insistence that it is or isn’t canon. Just that hey, in your imagination my character is awesome? That IS awesome! Love and cuddling for all!

I want these non-canon ships to be legitimate. That doesn’t mean they need to be canon. I think canon is better off with a set agenda that allows good, coherent writing and solid on-screen character development and you can’t do that if you’re shoe-horning in every ship in existence. Besides, as I said earlier, a lot of ships contradict one another. I can’t pair Hux with Rey, Kylo, Poe, and Rose all in the same canon. (Well, I suppose I *could* but it would be one of those weird love pentagons Boyega mentioned.)

OMG, now I can’t shake the idea of the five of them trapped somewhere, Kylo badly hurt, Hux defending him from Rey, Poe and Rose trying to grapple Hux to drag him away from Rey, Rey yelling at all of them to stop, her asking Hux politely if she can tend Kylo, being told curtly that he won’t allow it, her sitting on the floor and asking if *he* will tend Kylo while she watches, him saying he won’t do it while Poe and Rose are poised to attack him, Poe nudging Rose to back off, Rose pointing out ‘Why is Rey concerned about Kylo anyway?’, Poe hesitating then saying ‘Let’s just give them space.’ and backing off. Hux snarling at Rey but then going to finally check on Kylo.

And later when they emerge from wherever they’ve been trapped, they’ve come to like and trust each other. No more secrets! Rey and Kylo have been sleeping together. Poe and Hux and Rose have been angry at one another, threatened, fought, made up, sang songs, played cards or dice or truth-or-dare, got drunk, made out with each other, etc.

Hee.

Wait, what was I posting about?

To me the issue isn’t one of canon but one of awareness/inclusion. We all know that Kylux isn’t ever going to be canon, but it’s still a massive ship in the fandom. Likewise Stormpilot. Given a panel about romance in SW, is there a unsuspicious way of interpreting the inclusion of Reylo and the exclusion of FinnRey, Kylux and Stormpilot?

Is Reylo the one being debated because it’s a canon possibility, or is it being singled out because it’s an all-white m/f ship? FinnRey is also a canon possibility - why isn’t that being talked about? Likewise, in the absence of prejudice, Stormpilot is a canonical possibility - why isn’t that being talked about on an official panel?

It’s hard not to look at the singling out of the one m/f all white couple and not suspect there are other factors at play, no matter how much good work individual actors put into encouraging the writers of other ships.

The fandom is a lot more encouraging of diversity than the organizers of official panels, I suspect.

*sighs loudly*

Jesus Christ not this again.

This is not an official panel organized or held by anyone associated with Lucasfilm. If people would do some research before starting to gripe about a panel that’s not even been held yet, they’d have found out that this panel is held by a group of podcasters - women of color, btw - who put it together and asked the organizers if they could hold it. The organizers said yes. As for which ships will be discussed, the answer is “more than only those in the description” because the description has a character limit. How do I know all of this? I did my research.

And to pre-emptively answer the question of why I’m so salty: said research included having to wade through several twitter threads in which the people who organized this panel were tarred and feathered by a mob with pitchforks, as well as people threatening to disrupt the panel (and in one case even worse).

I’m shipping for fun but yeah it’s scary sometimes to see that some people are so sensitive about their ships! The most scary thing imo is when shippers don’t know how to make the difference between fiction and reality and harass the actors because of this!

I remember last year when John Boyega made a comment that he preferred FinnRey on Twitter and he received tons of insults (even racist ones) or when people insulted Adam Driver’s wife on social medias because they wanted him to be with Daisy Ridley, someone told me about this (Adam’s wife) but I didn’t check so sorry if I’m wrong!

Thanks for the info, @21st-century-flapper !

I’ve seen the panel is on today 4ish to 5ish? As an unofficial panel, do you know if it’s going to be posted on YouTube? It’s one of the other ones I’m really interested to see.

The Umbrella Academy branded anti-Semitic after villain speaks Yiddish:

littlegoythings:

It’s the Sun, but still –

The series features the head of the Commission using Yiddish in the final episode, as well as sporadic Yiddish words in episode six.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews Vice President Amanda Bowman said: “The use of a Yiddish saying by the evil boss of an organisation which controls the world’s timeline is clearly an antisemitic trope.

“Whether intentional or not, this makes for very uncomfortable viewing. Netflix should take action to remove the racism from this scene.”

Yiddish was spoken by over a million Jewish people in central Europe prior to the holocaust and now has around 200,000 speakers.

Author Katherine Locke, who is Jewish, said: “There’s an antisemitic conspiracy theory that there’s a secret cabal of Jews controlling or manipulating the world.

“This conspiracy theory has fuelled antisemites for a long time, and frequently results in violence.

“This scene played right into that. And I think the important part here is: some people will brush this scene off. A lot of people didn’t even see it.

“But there are two groups of people who will see it, and whom I believe are meant to see it: Jewish viewers, and antisemites. It felt like a dog whistle and a warning all in one.

“I don’t know who wrote the scene, or who added it, or if they knew what they were doing. It’s entirely possible that they didn’t know what they were writing.

“But that just goes to show how deeply embedded some of these antisemitic ideas are in our society.”

The use of the language is not in the comic book and was a decision to be put in by the show’s makers.

However in the comic book series the two assassins, Hazel and Cha-cha, wear swastika armbands - suggesting it is a Nazi organisation.

pls give me 1(one) reason aces have ever been oppressed, and 1(one) example of aces being a part of lgbt history(before 2004 at least) and then maybe i’ll consider the idea that aces belong in the lgbt community lol

Proof of the existence of asexuals in LGBT+ communities before 2000:

The Golden Orchid association (1644-1949) - a group of women in China that included lesbians, bisexuals, and “women who wanted to avoid both marriage options, and any romantic or sexual partnership” that today we would call asexual or aromantic.

Another Golden Orchid association link (which, interestingly, describes what appears to be a poly relationship).

Personal experience of a queer-identifying person noting that aces were part of the bi community in the 80s and 90s.

A book published in 1999 supports the previous link of someone’s personal experience, and notes that asexuals could be considered part of Kinsey’s “Group 3″ (the bisexuals) because they were “about equally homosexual and heterosexual” and “have no strong preferences for one or the other” just like bisexuals.

Another book that supports the personal experience source by noting that asexuals were considered part of the bisexual “Group 3″, which was published in 1999.

Another post of someone’s personal experiences of asexuals being part of the LGBT+ community in the 90s.

A source from 1999 noting that, while some female-female relationships in the early to mid-twentieth century were obviously lesbian relationships, not all of them were, but that it would be a mistake to label them all “friendships”. It specifically notes that asexual partnered relationships also existed.

This book describes a series of interviews done in 1990 by Catherine Whitney who interviewed heterosexual women married to gay men, and found that they were often asexual. It also describes how, in 1990, Ann Landers (a very popular advice columnist) asked her readers if married couples could enjoy a full life without sex and was flooded with 35,000 responses from people of all ages who had little or no sex and didn’t miss it. It also describes how “Boston marriage” was originally coined with a not-necessarily-always-accurate implication that such a relationship between women was nonsexual, but that later on the assumption was reversed to imply women in a sexual lesbian relationship, and how that caused some women involved in such relationships to hide the asexual nature of their relationships for fear of being called frauds by the larger lesbian community.

This 1997 book that states “To be a Kinsey 3 (bisexual) is to be equally attracted to men and women, i.e. completely bisexual…it is also to be equally unattracted to men and women, i.e. completely asexual. Bisexuality is never about two, only about one – asexual, or self-fulfilling – or three – continuously and equally attracted to both men and women”.

Proof of asexuality being considered as a concrete, distinct orientation before 2000:

One of the first online posts about asexuality in its current use, was made in 1997.

A study on anorexia and bulemia in gay and bisexual men done in 1999 found that 58% of anorexia patients were asexual.

The 1997 Australasian Gay & Lesbian Law Journal mentions asexual as a “relevant sexual identity”.

A 1983 issue of the Journal of Sex Research studied the Mental Health Implications of Sexual Orientation among heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, and asexual people.

The article “Asexuality as Orientation: Some Historical Perspectives” describes different historical studies on asexuality, including a study from Johnson in 1977 where the word asexual was used to describe women “regardless of physical or emotional condition, actual sexual history, and marital status or ideological orientation, [who] seem to prefer not to engage in sexual activity”. It also describes a 1980 study by Storms who included asexual as one of four orientation categories when mapping out sexual orientation. It also describes a 1983 study by Nurius that found out of 685 participants, 5% of males and 10% of females were asexual. It also describes a 1990 study by Berkley et al. that included questions “related to homosexuality, heterosexuality, and asexuality” and included four items (out of 45) that were specific to asexuality.

This book published in 1922 contains a lot of what I personally would describe as narcissism and pseudo-science, but acknowledges asexuality nonetheless: “In addition to the ordinary distinctive males and females, we have asexuals, homosexuals, bisexuals, and old women of both sexes.”

This book from 1996 that notes “A transsexual may have a heterosexual orientation, a homosexual orientation, a bisexual orientation – or an asexual orientation” and clarifies that “a very small number – are asexual or bisexual.”

This book mentions a study by Malyon in 1981 that noted the options available to gay and lesbian teenagers choosing whether, or how, to come out by “[describing] three possible modes of adaptation in adolescence: repression of sexual desire, suppression of homosexual impulses in favor of heterosexual or asexual orientation, or a homosexual disclosure.”

Kinds of oppression that asexuals face:

Eunjung Kim wrote a chapter titled “How Much Sex Is Healthy? The Pleasures of Asexuality” that describes how “the absence of sexual desires, feelings, and activities is seen as abnormal and reflective of poor health” in Western contemporary culture “because of the explicit connection between sexual activeness and healthiness” and argues that “medical explanations of asexuality as an abnormality that has to be corrected constitute a large part of the stigmatization and marginalization experienced by asexual people.” It also discusses the ways in which some groups, specifically Asian American males, that are desexualized can erase the space for asexual Asian American men to simply exist.

Asexuals also face sexual harassment, rape threats, corrective sexual assault, and corrective rape (which, no, is not a lesbian-only term according to actual South Africans) specifically because they are asexual.

There was a recent study by the AAU to identify sexual assault on college campuses, and broke down the responders to their survey by sexual orientation, including asexual. The results clearly show that asexuals are not immune to unwanted sexual contact, stalking, intimate partner violence, or sexual harassment.

A chapter of “Asexualities: Feminist and Queer Perspectives” that notes the specific way that asexual people are talked to/about: “Because asexual difference cannot be iterated in the linguistic field where sex and a sexed position dominate the discourse of sexuality and desire, the asexual subject is linguistically and visually dismantled and reconstructed in the position of a fetish object. This fetishistic conversion happens because the asexual person is made into an image, or spectacle, for consumption.” and “The difference between the unassailable asexual (someone who lacks all of the traits commonly blamed for asexuality such as past history of abuse, disability, etc.) and the spectacular asexual is that while the unassailable asexual allegedly makes asexuality digestible for a skeptical public and presents an accessible image, the spectacular asexual is always consumed as a fetish object, regardless of mental health, ability, and gender.”

The study “Intergroup bias toward “Group X”: Evidence of prejudice, dehumanization, avoidance, and discrimination of asexuals” is exactly what it sounds like. The article’s abstract states: “In two studies (university student and community samples) we examined the extent to which those not desiring sexual activity are viewed negatively by heterosexuals. We provide the first empirical evidence of intergroup bias against asexuals (the so-called “Group X”), a social target evaluated more negatively, viewed as less human, and less valued as contact partners, relative to heterosexuals and other sexual minorities. Heterosexuals were also willing to discriminate against asexuals (matching discrimination against homosexuals). Potential confounds (e.g., bias against singles or unfamiliar groups) were ruled out as explanations.”

The Invisible Orientation: An Introduction to Asexuality describes many issues that asexuals face, including: how asexuality is seen as “invisible” and lends to people thinking it does not exist, how asexuality is actively erased as “unimportant” or not its own identity, the explicitly and implicitly negative messages associated with a lack of sexual attraction, the fear asexuals face when they believe there is something physically or psychologically wrong with them for being asexual, the belief asexuals face about how they must be deeply flawed since they do not conform to other sexual identities, how asexuals face cultural ideologies that sexuality is biologically based and ubiquitous (that all humans possess sexual desire) and that don’t acknowledge asexuality, that to describe oneself as asexual is a statement of moral superiority or purity or failure to find a suitable partner, that asexuality is an immature state they will “grow out of”, that asexuality is a description of action or a preference, that asexuality is unnatural or unhealthy or has to be a symptom of something else, etc.

Asexuality has been shown in the media in a negative light for decades, reflecting the idea that (for various reasons steeped in classism and racism) any woman who wasn’t willing to marry and procreate was a threat to the status quo, as seen in this 1955 book that notes: “Women who did not marry incurred political and social scorn for another reason. The influx of eastern and southern European immigrants in the United States pushed the question into eugenic terms–the wrong people were reproducing. Educated women came primarily from white middle- and upper-class stock, the most desired element by dominant social norms. When these women refused to marry and reproduce, they forced a new concern into the public discourse. it is not a coincidence that the stereotypical asexual unmarried older woman emerged at this time as a source of popular humor.”

Some people in some religions are very explicit about hating asexuals specifically because they are asexual, seeing asexuality as “a perversion akin to homosexuality and bestiality”.

Other religions see asexuals as actually sinful if they choose not to have sex with their spouse.

While not every member of every religion looks down on asexuals, many people in portions of various religions choose to view asexuals negatively.

Some people even recommend asexuals avoid being in a relationship with non-asexuals and assert that “promoting and trying to spread” asexuality, or behaving in an asexual manner, is wrong or unhealthy.

Because of these religious beliefs about asexuality, that also opens up asexuals to discrimination in various legal ways, including (but not limited to) things like the new adoption bill in Texas.

Asexuality was implicitly pathologized until very recently, and even now, the DSM-V states that a diagnosis of HSDD may not be given only if the patient has a preexisting knowledge of asexuality and chooses to ID that way.

TL;DR:

Asexuals have long been considered part of the bisexual community. When people used to talk about bisexuals, it included asexuals because asexuals were the bisexuals too. Bisexual history is asexual history.

Asexuals have also long been considered as a stand-alone orientation that was part of larger non-straight communities and could be studied in comparison to other sexual orientations.

Asexuals face many of the same issues that other marginalized orientations face as well as issues specific to their orientation. These include erasure, medicalization, misidentification, harassment, rape specifically targeted at them for being asexual, and religious intolerance, to name just a few.

None of this is exhaustive. There are more sources to be found and studied.

infinity war rewrite. opening scene. instead of monologuing about nonsense for five minutes (boring) and killing heimdall (unnecessary) thanos just grabs loki by the ankles and shakes him upside down until the tesseract falls out his pocket, but then thanos keeps shaking him and more and more entirely identical tesseracts just keep falling out of loki’s pockets and making a pile on the ground and this goes on until the point where it becomes comical

Loki survives by being disguised as one of the tesseract and Thanos has just been shaking his duplicate

Later after Thanos has put the space stone in the infinity gauntlet when he tries to snap it turns into Loki and he’s like “Blargh,” and stabs him

‘Life is very full of sex, or should be. As much as I admire Tolkien — and I do, he was a giant of fantasy and a giant of literature, and I think he wrote a great book that will be read for many years — you do have to wonder where all those Hobbits came from, since you can’t imagine Hobbits having sex, can you? Well, sex is an important part of who we are. It drives us, it motivates us, it makes us do sometimes very noble things and it makes us do sometimes incredibly stupid things. Leave it out, and you’ve got an incomplete world.’ George R R Martin (source)

no disrespect to george rr martin but this quote cracks me up bcos every time i see if I’m just like, no george… you can’t imagine hobbits having sex. ;P

FOUND IT & I say again: I can imagine hobbits having sex just fine.

Georgey boy here forgetting Sam’s 13 kids.

he didn’t forget about them. he just doesn’t understand where they came from.

That’s even funnier, then.

george rr martin, looking at the gamgee family tree and crying: wh-where… where did they all come from…….

this man is apparently under the impression that we need sex scenes to understand that sex exists in any given story universe and honestly that explains so much about his writing

It really does

Not to get political but my philosophy is fundamentally that all people should suffer less. That it’s everyone’s responsibility to try to make the world a little better for everyone else. And anyone trying to do the opposite is an asshole who needs to stop.

This is a Moving Forward PSA for everyone using AO3. I am witnessing the results of a culture class and communication failure. Not a lack of communication, but a misunderstanding caused by changes in fandom culture.

Before fic tagging was common, fics weren’t tagged. You had a pairing, if applicable, an author’s note about genre or general content, and if they were feeling charitable, a vague content warning. There are even a few genres of fic where even vaguely tagging literally spoils the plot and impact (such as horror, psyche thriller, in which the likely content is implicit to the genre). As a result, there is a basic category tag that permits this, as a courtesy to “old-fashioned” writers.

“No Archive Warnings Apply” means the fic is PG13 at worst, probably fluff, totally safe.

“Choose Not to Use Archive Warnings” is the polar opposite. It’s a glaring Enter at Your Own Risk billboard. It means: a shitload of warnings apply but I ain’t telling because this story requires shock value. It’s very important to read the author’s notes for those fics because they might be using that older format from above.

But without the context of fandom culture that generated AO3, it’s understandably easy to conflate the two categories, given their similar wording.

This is some good info. Sharing for anyone that doesn’t know.

So there were still doubts in my mind if Hux really cared about the kids or if he was acting like he cared to convince the kids to join the First Order in the Phasma novel but now we know that he truly cared about them!

Hux is good with kids and he cares about them! It’s canon guys! My heart! ❤

Thanks again to @DarthAstris for asking questions to the star Wars writers about Hux!

I am so glad that Armitage Hux has at least one canon quality that designates him as morally good in some way.

Because things like being competent, organized, intelligent - these aren’t redeeming qualities. Ambition and determination are often societally labeled as evil. But his willingness to take responsibility - that was good. His prudence in not yelling at his subordinates - good. His bravery is debatable. I find him very brave. Others argue differently.

But caring about children? You really can’t spin that in a bad way.

Make that sentence longer by saying “Hux is good with kids and he cares about them because he too grew up on run, neglected, abused, often hurt and hungry and he honestly wishes that there will be no more children like him, which is why he reformed trooper program and harvested kids from poor planets and slave traders so they grow up well fed, well clothed, with roof above their heads and purpose in their life”. So yeah, he may have a prety twisted opinion about how should the ideal galactic order work, but he took starving kids, orphans and slaves and gave them at least a tiny bit better life than what they would have otherwise.

Yes I’m sure he genuinely think that the First Order will give a better life to these children.

Though in the Phasma novel, the kids are exposed to the First Order propaganda all day even when they sleep if I remember correctly. It’s still a bit creepy if you ask me.

Part of what I love about Armitage Hux (from the point of view of empathizing with a character, and writing them) is how twisted up his idea of good and evil must be, given his background and the major influences on his life.

Jason Fry or Chuck Wendig confirmed Brendol Hux as a sadist and we’ve seen Snoke in action. I figure Armitage has been gaslit his whole life. I’ll bet he thinks he’s saved these kids so they can live meaningful lives of glorious service to the galactic order - virtue, justice, prosperity! The propaganda is just there to help them!

LOL.

That’s exactly what I had in mind. I mean, there was literally not a single normal person in his life who didn’t see him as anything else but failure, soldier or both. It’s not like he has any kind role models to copy. Plus, if all he’ve ever seen and been told are diseases, hunger and lawless chaos of corrupted republic that doesn’t care on one side versus rule and strict system of FO where every one and everyting has an exact place and purpose, can you blame him for chosing later?

I think we’ve talked before about the likely media blackout the FO has? That is, they’ve been hiding in the Unknown Regions most of Armitage’s life. I doubt he’s seen standard media coverage. All he’s got to go on is the Empire’s historical records and whatever bits he sees due to his clearance or mission activities. With his head buried in trooper simulations and mega-weapon design, I doubt he knows very much of the galaxy at large. He can’t possibly be well-traveled. To him, Hosnian Prime is just a bunch of statistics. Heck, it would be the same to most of the FO!

I suspect the younger folk have NO recent knowledge of galactic events. It would be like me trying to navigate world events based on 1989 information. Iphones? What are those? Who is Siri? Trump is president of the USA?!? What is Twitter? What’s a meme? [Actor Name] is dead? Who is Adam Driver again? Why is climate change a thing? Wait a second, people TELL other people that they’re gay?

I went looking for this paragraph to illustrate what Hux probably thinks about the kids’ experience in the Stormtrooper program. Admittedly, this is what Cardinal thinks about it, but Cardinal has experienced it, so in theory he should know what he’s talking about, and there’s no reason to think Hux doesn’t feel the same sense of pride:

His recruits look so young in the mess, their helmets carefully placed on numbered shelves so they can eat. They wave to him cheerfully and he waves back. Here, dining and drinking in groups of their own choosing, they are simply children. Collected from some of the loneliest of the unclaimed territories of the galaxy, they come together to become great soldiers under Cardinal’s watchful eye. Their hair and skin cover every possible shade from pale to dark; their eyes range from ice blue to pitch black and every hue in between. Their buzzed scalps show sweat from training, and their laughter defies the misery of their origins and histories. They have risen from their own ashes.

Cardinal feels a swell of pride. This, this is what the First Order is all about. Giving everyone equal opportunity to succeed, no matter how lowly their beginning or how far-off their planet. There are no rich kids here, lording it over the orphans. No lobbyists or interest groups or bribes. No one is starving or thirsty or dying of exposure. As far as Cardinal is concerned, anyone who opposes the obvious benefits of the First Order is a fool.

notre dame is burning.

this is ok.

it has happened before. it will happen again. it has been lost before. it will be lost again. and again. and again. and again. art and architecture are transient, and temporary, and 850 years may seem like a lot to the individual, who will live maybe 100 if they are very lucky and very healthy, but even the pyramids at saqqara have only existed for about 6000 years and that’s still not all that much, if you consider the grand scheme of things.

yes, this is terrible. as someone who is deeply religious and literally a professional historian with a focus on art and architecture, this is terrible. im mourning. im gutted. im horrified and upset and miserable. but.

it’s not over.

victor hugo wrote hunchback because notre dame du paris was in the process of collapsing and falling apart, and revitalized the entire world’s focus and love for this church, and that was not even 200 years ago. it led to it being renovated.

the roof has fallen in. the scars of fires are on its buttresses. the rose window has fallen out. the beams and piers have collapsed. the spire has toppled. the stones have suffered, and will suffer again, but it is not gone.

renovation work is essential. sometimes things collapse and burn and break and have to come back. it’s not a terrorist attack, it’s renovation, an accident, but we have so much evidence, history, carefully documented everything on one of the most studied places in the world.

it’s not the end.

Hey so, French person here. And also an ex History student. I’m here to say: Please listen to o.p. above.

Obviously everyone is shocked but here’s a few important key facts:

The roof is completely gone. Part of it dated back from the 13th century but the rest was from the 19th. The stone arch roof under the top roof is fine.

One of the three main stained glass rose windows has fallen out. Most of the other stained glass windows are okay.

The spire has fallen down and that’s the saddest part. BUT! It was in the process of being restored and the 16 statues that were there were removed just four days ago! So they’re fine.

The main structure is still here and nothing has “burned down” unlike what some people have been saying.

The “treasure” (sacred objects) is safe.

Notre Dame is still there. It’s just damaged. Almost nothing was lost today, and nobody was wounded either. It’s scary, but it’s gonna be okay.

Poor Notre Dame survived French Revolution and Robespierre, I’m indeed sure she’ll survive some fire. ;)

allergies

For anyone wondering why this happens: the body language cues that humans use to mean “I’m not interested in contact, please ignore me and leave me alone” are the same body language cues that cats use to say “I’m not a threat to you and we could chill together if you want.”

The term “i speak cat” is kind of a misnomer because 95% of cat communication is NON-VOCAL.
Cats who want to chill will look at you and then look away and/or blink slowly when you notice them staring. They will fold up their body to be smol and non-threatening. They will yawn and purr and act like they don’t care you’re there.
All of these things say to a cat “we’re cool, bro, we should hang out.”

Humans trying to avoid contact will adopt a closed body posture (legs close together, arms crossed, head down/slightly hunched over); to a cat that looks like trying to be smol and non-threatening.
Humans trying to avoid contact will try to watch other people without the other person catching on to being watched. So they look and then immediately glance away when acknowledged; to a cat this says “yeah, I know you’re there but I’m ok with it, we’re cool.”
Humans trying to avoid contact will keep fairly quiet and act bored to discourage interaction; to a cat that says “you can tell I’m totally ok with you being around because I’m not actively screaming and showing displeasure at your presence.”

If you’re allergic to cats, learn some cat body language so you stop accidentally inviting cats for a snuggle when you actually want them to avoid you.

I used to tell my friends that if you wanted the cat to avoid you, step one was to yell “KITTY!” and come running at her and try to pick her up without her permission. Et voila, the cat now wants nothing to do with you. They never believed me for some reason.

This is also how I manage to look like some kind of freaky cat whisperer - Sit quietly doing something else and let the cat come to me.

It’s awesome.

(The “You’re a kitty! :D” comes later, with the cats who know me and are okay with the fact I’m a dork.)

And there’s those of us with cat allergies who know this and just go “fuck it, YOLO, it’s how I wanted to go” and learn to be polite and welcoming in Cat anyway.
