I see the traditional association of red hair with evil has not yet died out.

This post brought to you by the sudden realization that General Hux and Crowley from Good Omens are both startlingly red-headed.

How very retrograde.

Hello! In an attempt to remain neutral on ace discourse, me and the other mod decided to release a survey to decide in what ways ace and aro people who are cis and not attracted to their own gender will be included in the pride awards, since some people were upset at how we were going to deal with it. Click anywhere on this text to take the survey!

The survey is closed, here are the results!

While we were going to allow everybody who considered themselves LGBT+ (including any aces/aros) to be nominated for awards while not including specific ace/aro categories as a way to not explicitly favor either side of the ace discourse, several people requested ace/aro specific categories which is why we put the matter up to a poll. However as can be seen, by over a 50% margin people voted to not allow aces and aros who are both cis and not attracted to their own gender to be nominated for any category. This decision ONLY affect aces and aros who are both cis AND not attracted to their own gender, trans/nb/lesbian/gay/bi/pan/etc aces and aros may be nominated.

As stated at the top of the survey for those who took it, this decision is final. It may be revisited next June, but any asks/comments regarding this will not be answered. This is a community-oriented blog, and this is the decision the community came to, and therefore it will not be changed

This is disgusting. Your actions of “passive” hatred here are disgusting.

I literally cannot form the words of how hateful and spiteful and utterly disgusting it is to let people who want to erase and silence aro/ace people for being aro/ace vote on if we deserve to be recognized and included. This is some of the most passive, utterly hateful rhetoric I have had to deal with in a while, having blocked the violent, virulently hateful people that no doubt voted in your survey.

Aro/aces are 1000% a part of the community. We belong at pride. You and your gatekeeping, identity policing bullshit do not.

Folks, keep safe and stay the fuck away from this hateful, exclusionary blog trying to act all “neutral” by putting our acceptance up to popular vote. Ignore this blog and warn anyone you see being nominated by it that this blog does not support aspec folk and does not deserve to be seen or heard. If you’re nominated, do the right thing and turn the nomination down. You don’t need recognition from the sort of people the entire community is constantly speaking out against.

[profile] lgbtprideawards if you’d really cared, you’d have just listened to what actual aro/ace people are saying about our own experiences, instead of trying to deny them and giving everyone else a voice over us.

Change your URL to LGBT ONLY awards

“This only effects cis het aces” no it doesn’t, it make me a trans bi ace feel like you welcome people who recycle old intercommunity hate. And that you do awards makes it even more of a popularity contest.

Great, great, nice… So you’ve decided you can just discard a big chunk of the ace community because we’re not gay enough? Nice.

Look, I’m agender het ace so technically I could squeeze myself into this category if I wanted to, but fuck that. The ace community as a whole is important to me, and the idea that we have to accept some of our people being purged because they don’t meet your standard is…

Just come right out and say you don’t consider asexuality or aromanticism part of the queer community. Have the courage of your convictions. Don’t try and split up our community just to pretend you accept us.

All aros/aces belong or none of us do.

One thing about the whole “I need to shock audiences and surprise them” mentality going on in media currently is that, not only does it sacrifice character arcs or having the narrative make sense for the sake of “surprising audiences”, I feel it also punishes the audience for trying to engage with the material.

Good world-building and foreshadowing should reward people for noticing small details such as names or places or even guessing what a character will do.

Since it is a general rule in Tumblr to use ATLA as an example of good writing, I want to point out to Azula’s first appearence in the show.

We first see her in a flashback only for a moment where she does not say anything and her identity is not even hinted at. But to those who pay attention, you can gather that her design is too unique to be just a background character, she must have some importance down the line.

You can also see that her reaction to Zuko being punished is similar to Zhao’s and the opposite to Iroh’s. This manages to establish plenty about her.

And then the season finale reveals she is Zuko’s sister.

One of my favorite things about people’s blind reaction to ATLA is when they notice Azula’s flashback cameo and say “hey, she seems happy Zuko is being scarred for life. Wonder if she is important in some way” then discover who she is and go “the girl enjoying Zuko’s suffering was his sister!!?”

And that is good payoff. Because it is something that actually rewards people for engaging with the material. It gives them positive feedback that tells them there is value in engaging with the material beyond just consumption. That there is value in rewatching and see what one missed.

The need to “shock” audiences is the opposite of this. To have a character or story seem important only to drop it unceremioniously because “it was unexpected” is the opposite of that.

It tells them “you tried to guess what was going to happen? to think rewatching would help you understand the work better? you are stupid for doing so.”

One of the ballsiest things Tolkien ever did was write 473k words about some hobbits called frodo, sam, merry, and pippin and then write in the appendices that their names are actually maura, ban, kali, and razal.

This just in: Eowyn and Eomer’s names actually start with the letter “L.” [source for other nerds]

#wait so they have hobbitish names and common names?

No, they have Westron names and English names.

What you’ve got to understand is that everything Tolkien wrote was him pretending to merely translate ancient documents. He was writing as if the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were actually been written by Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam (or Bilba, Maura, and Ban) and he was just some random contemporary academic translating it all into English for us.

There are many languages in his books, but generally speaking, everything written in English in the books is a translation of the language “Westron.” Therefore any names that come from Westron, he translated. Names coming from other languages, like Sindarin, he left as they were. Why? IDK. Maybe because the stories are from a hobbit perspective and hobbits speak Westron, so he wanted the Westron parts to sound familiar and the other languages/names to remain foreign?

“But Mirkwoodest!” you cry, “The word ‘hobbit’ isn’t an English word! And the names Bilbo Baggins, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin Took, and Meriadoc Brandybuck” all sounds super weird and not like English at all!”

Psych! They are in English! (Or Old English, German, or Norse.) Once again you underestimate what a nerd Tolkien was. Let me break it down:

In Westron, hobbits are actually called “kuduk,” which means “hole-dweller,” so for an English translation, Tolkien called them “hobbits” which is a modernization of the Old English word “holbytla” which comes from “Hol” (hole) and “Bytla”(builder).

“Maura” is a Westron name which means “Wise.” Weirdly enough, “Frodo” is an actual Proto-Germanic name that actual people used to have and it means the same thing.

“Banazîr” is Westron for “half-wise, or simple.” In Proto Germanic, the prefix “Sam” means half, and wise is obviously a word we still use.

“Razanur” means “Traveler” or “Stranger” which is also the meaning of the word “Peregrin(e)” This one is a twofer because  “Razar” means “a small red apple” and in English so does “Pippin.”

“Kalimac” apparently is a meaningless name in Westron, but the shortened form “Kali” means “happy,” so Jirt decided his nickname would be “Merry” and chose the really obscure ancient Celtic name “Meriodoc” to match.

Jirt chose to leave “Bilba” almost exactly the same in English, but he changed the ending to an “O” because in Westron names ending in “a” are masculine.

I’m not going to go on and talk about the last names but those all have special meanings too (except Tûk, which is too iconic to change more than the spelling of, apparently).

The Rohirrim were also Westron speakers first and foremost, so their names are also “translations” into Old English and Proto-Germanic words, i.e. “Eowyn”  is a combination of “Eoh” (horse) and “Wynn” (joy/bliss).

“Rohirrim/Rohan” are Sindarin words, but in the books, they call themselves the “Éothéod” which is an Old English/Norse combo that means “horse people.” Tolkien tells us in the “Peoples of Middle Earth” that the actual Westron for “Éothéod” is Lohtûr, which means that Eowyn and Eomer’s names, which come from the same root word, must also start with the letter L.

The names of all the elves, dwarves, Dunedain, and men from Gondor are not English translations, since they come from root words other than Westron.

The takeaway from this is that when a guy whose first real job was researching the history and etymology of words of Germanic origin beginning with the letter “W” writes a book, you can expect this kind of tomfoolery.

Notes: Sorry I said “Razal” instead of “Razar” in my original post I’m a fraud.

I’m glad my shitpost about Daenerys is getting traction but I’m baffled that very few people have noticed that “Revolutionary Be Crazy” pattern, especially in a time when we are swarmed with superhero stuff.

Villains in superhero movies are always driven by “revolutionary” motivations. Thanos is, quite literally, worried about the ecological collapse of the universe. That’s the driving force of the character. He does not even want to be God Emperor of the Galaxy. His underlying desire is the same as a climate change activist, yet Thanos is the genocidal maniac to be defeated and the superheroes NEVER stops once to think whether Thanos’ concerns are legitimate or not.

In Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Bane gives a quasi anarchocommunist speech about how Gotham is engulfed in corruption for the sole benefits of those in power, prisons are a symbol of oppression and the police is shit. Why isn’t Batman the one giving this speech?

I could go on and on with examples.

This is not done solely to give nuance to the villains, because it is pretty much a pattern: the villain wants to break the system, and the hero is called to preserve it. The hero never ever questions the villain’s motivation.

Someone mentioned Star Wars: no, the heroes in Star Wars are not revolutionary. Star Wars, like Marvel movies and generic Hollywood flicks, is just another neoliberal fantasy. It’s standard good vs evil. Luke is just fighting an authoritarian regime (the baddies) and so is Rey, because as heroes, they have to. Because Evil Empire is bad, and we all know is bad. We all know that authoritarian regimes are bad. Luke does not want to break the system for the sake of it, and neither does Rey, even though Rian Johnson managed to slip some anticapitalist lines into the script. Neither Luke, nor Rey, nor any other goodie ever thinks what is going to happen once the Republic is restored and how to get rid of the flaws that caused the Republic to fall twice. In The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren is given the “break the system” lines with his speech to Rey about letting the past die to create a new world. In the prequel trilogy (and supplemental material like The Clone Wars), it was Anakin, the character destined to become Darth Vader, the one pressed because the Republic is shit, corrupted and cannot get stuff done. Padmé and Obi-Wan are “yeah man the system is crap, but do you want a dictatorship?”. Which, by the way, is exactly what happens.

Classic liberal centrist message: you want capitalism destroyed, boy? You get literally Hitler, or Stalin, or whatever. So shut up. Accept the current oppressive system because it could be worse.

Revolution ain’t good.

Revolutionaries are bad.

Status quo is good.

That’s why subversive lines are always given to villains, and why the revolutionaries are always the baddies.

I can think of one subtle exception: Hunger Games. Even though at the end the leader of the Rebellion turns out to be “as bad as President Snow” (lol) and the hero kills her instead of Snow (another lol), I would say the overall message is not pro system. President Snow might be Emperor Palpatine, but as opposed to Star Wars, Hunger Games clearly shows that the rich, the élite and the media enable Snow’s power and the oppression of poorer districts and are pretty much oblivious to their struggles.

Three big pop culture phenomena are ending this year, and they all shows a recurring motif:

Final biggest villain in Avengers is a character worried about ecological collapse.

“Final villain” in Game of Thrones is a character who has talked so many times about “breaking the wheel” and “ending slavery”. She turns into General Hux from The Force Awakens, but instead of blowing planets she’s talking about freeing slaves. The only other character who has lowkey defied the system and befriended demonized outsiders, is exiled.

Star Wars: big bad of the final movie is Palpatine. Whether Kylo Ren is redeemed or not (his redemption implies he gives up on “building the new galaxy” and “letting the past die”), the Republic will be restored anyway, the problems will never be discussed, so it can crash again for Episode X in 2050.

“Classic liberal centrist message: you want capitalism destroyed, boy? You get literally Hitler, or Stalin, or whatever. So shut up. Accept the current oppressive system because it could be worse.”

Fans Are Ruining Game of Thrones—And Everything Else:

tobermoriansass:

Yet there is something worth paying attention to in this latest petition from fans keen to have a creative work made the way that they want it. The comments on the petition are instructive. Amidst the usual griping—the final season is “not Game of Thrones anymore,” it is “garbage,” a “slap in the face”—the most common sentiment is some variation on the disappointment caused by all that has been invested in the show. Fans invested their time (eight years!) and their energy (so many Sunday nights!) and their money (HBO isn’t free) supporting the show—and now they realize, to their mounting rage, that this investment has not paid off. The return has been less than what was expected.

Here then, it starts to become a little clearer what exactly is going on with these petitions. Back in the early 1990s, the American critic Fredric Jameson talked of the collapse in the perceived distinction between the economic and the cultural. As late as the 1960s, Jameson said, it was still possible to argue that the cultural occupied an autonomous space, outside of or in some way distinct from capitalism. But in an era of franchise entertainment and increasingly homogenized cultural production, where films and television and even books are judged as successes based on the money they bring in, such a space is increasingly unthinkable.

So it’s not a surprise that, as the economic and the cultural have become increasingly interlinked, these instances of fan protest have become more intense and more protracted. They reflect the ways in which it has become impossible to think of any popular culture outside the logic of capitalism. At the center of this matrix is a certain kind of consumer: the fan who is invested, both literally and figuratively, in the product cum work of art.

Culture has become a commodity that the audience is invited to purchase—and, given the way in which cultural objects are serialized, franchised, and spun off into expanded universes, the purchase is an ongoing investment. To entice a purchase what is needed is a stable, reliable commodity that promises a certain return. So studios and production companies focus-test and demand edits and revision if the commodity under production seems at risk of not making an adequate return.

The investment of fans is not just financial, of course. What is equally important (if not more so) is the emotional and libidinal investment of fans en masse. Here, pop culture can create not just economic ROI but a discourse around the product that turns investment into a kind of social necessity. A big enough group of fan-consumers can create more of the same just through sheer mass, as it becomes a cultural phenomenon that the individual has to buy into in order to participate within wider cultural discourses. Game of Thrones is the example par excellence of this dynamic, fostering FOMO in those who otherwise have no interest in medieval fantasy epics and forcing everyone to grudgingly familiarize themselves with the phrase “winter is coming.”

If you need a large demographic to invest into a specific pop-culture product, then this needs to be a stable commodity that not only brings in the buyer, but also continues to keep him happy. So when buyers do not get what they want (or were led to believe they could expect) all they can do is the equivalent of asking for a refund or exchange. After all, they didn’t get what they paid for, and the ideology of contemporary capitalism has made an axiomatic truth out of the customer always being right.

Thanks to this logic, the fan tends toward arrangements that are strangely literalist. The product is what it is, and can be only that—hence the complaint on the petition that the eighth season didn’t “feel like Game of Thrones,” which shows the extent to which the fan depends upon pop culture living up to its product description. This is, of course, entirely at odds with the endless interpretability of art and highlights the ways in which, even though the ethos of capitalism has sunk into the core of how we think about culture, there is still a moment in which it slips beyond the reach of the market. The dissatisfaction of the fans who sign these petitions signals the limits of the capitalist logic that seeks to be the frame in which every cultural engagement takes place.

What’s needed is a move away from the perpetually disappointed figure of the fan. Rather than see a given cultural text (or culture more generally) as reinforcing and satisfying a consumer/service-provider relationship, audiences must judge and engage with art outside of the logic of what they think they are owed. Pop culture doesn’t need fans—but it could use more fandom. At its best, fandom is a playful, participatory, and dialogic engagement with a work of art—exploring it, remaking it, rewriting it. Fandom tends not to see the text in dogmatic terms, but as a mutable creation that lends itself to multiple interpretations. Just as the fan was birthed by contemporary capitalism, so, too, was fandom, helped by the rise of networked technologies, message boards, listservs, Tumblr accounts, and much more besides. What we need, in other words, are fewer petitions and more fan fiction.

In fandom, we see the possibility and multiplicity that exist beyond the frustrations and dissatisfactions of consumers who feel like they didn’t get the right return on their investment. Abolish this canonical, consumer approach to pop culture, abolish the fan-consumer, and liberate pop culture from the stultifying logic of the service industry and market capitalism. Let’s not view culture as a product to own, but as a creative space in which to share something beyond price, profit, exchange, and loss.

I think this article really put its finger on what has been weirding me out about fandom lately, which is that there’s a lot more consumerist style language going on about what is “expected” and “deserved”, that fails to grapple with the subjective quality and interpretation of art and which also means that fandom is less about creative exchange and cultural playfulness and more about “winning” - which is also a capitalist-style construct revolving around acquiring status and “capture” (e.g. as in, capture of markets) - and the end result is that things have been feeling way way more transactional and demanding in a nasty way.

The article writer seems pretty naive about the current state of fandom if they think those fans don’t also think they’re part of fandom - and that fandom isn’t capable of this kind of consumerism and capitalist driven logic, but I also think these ideas hold true for the current state of fandom as well.

Since I haven’t seen any mention of it yet, except on twitter, i’d also like to remind everyone that not only is June LGBT pride month, but it’s also Indigenous History month!

Please take the time to support, uplift and remember your Native, First Nations, Aboriginal and otherwise Indigenous friends and family. We are here, we exist! We have a long and winding history that deserves to be heard and respected! The word ‘Indigenous’ is so wonderful, and so expansive, and includes so many different cultures under its arms. Go out, learn about our histories and our cultures. Talk to the Indigenous people around you! We’re everywhere!

And not only that, but also be sure to give extra support to LGBT indigenous voices in this community. We are a minority that is scarcely acknowledged, and in desperate need of it. Too many times have I gotten strange looks for being so openly Native and so openly a lesbian. It’s as if that combination is impossible for people to understand. Support our content, buy from our stores! Or at least just include us!

I’d like to wish a happy LGBT pride month, and a happy Indigenous History month to everyone, but especially us LGBT Native folks. This really is our month to be open about ourselves, and I sure intend to. 💗🏳️‍🌈

and then TERFs wanna be like, “hmm well the LGBT community existed before Stonewall!”

So while most rainbow capitalism is sticking rainbows on things and pretending to be an ally, Budweiser’s UK branch is giving credit to trans activists, and explaining pride flag colors.

Budweiser is an inclusionist 💞💞💞

What a weird and true thing to say! And I almost sounds like a joke but honestly I feel this tweet captures 90% of my feelings

And to actually credit Monica Helms and get the white stripe right? Like, if we are going to have companies at pride this is what I’d like to see. Professional looking marketing, credit to activists, research about the groups its marketing, and spreading further awareness.

I agree 100% with this. While its nice seeing corporations putting more efforts during pride than just putting a bunch of pride flags on their social media and items and calling it a day, its more important to spread awareness about how the lgbtqa community has high statistics of alcohol addiction and how alot of harm has come onto lgbtqa people because of alcohol induced health concerns.

I hope this post doesn’t come off as promoting budwiser or implying that people should buy budwiser just bc they included trans and ace people bc the purpose is mainly to point out that since we dont have a way to stop corporations from exploiting lgbtqa people overnight, if were gonna see corporations using pride month to market their products towards lgbtqa people, id rather have them using their platform to actually spread ACTUAL awareness about lgbtqa identities and people and help other lgbtqa people and boost lgbtqa activists (like budwiser is doing here) than slap some pride flags and tell lgbtqa people to buy their products.Id rather see corporations GIVING some benefit to the marginalized people even as a marketing ploy than just expecting us to give them our money just bc they turned their twitter icon to rainbow and made their products pride colors for a month lol

And yeah i too wish any other brand than an alcohol one was doing this too

Id appreciate it if you guys reblogged this version instead bc i dont want people to interpret this post as promoting alcohol brands or alcoholism in general

LGBTQ+ superheroes for Pride month ❤

Nice try but the first 3 are not gay. You Tumblr degenerate send your wishful thinking. seriously do you people have to ruin everything…

Deadpool is pansexual. Loki is bisexual and gender fluid. Wonder Woman is bisexual like all the Amazons. Educate yourself about comic canon before saying something ridiculous.

Do you have any reliable sources that can back this up?

You mean… besides the fucking comics?!

Wonder Woman was shown as canonically bisexual in the main DCU continuity in Wonder Woman: Year One (She was heavily implied to be numerous times before then but it was stated canonically in that comic that she had romantic and sexual relationships with multiple Amazons and left her girlfriend behind to journey to our world to stop the threat of Ares sons bringing chaos and war to the world)

She’s also canonically bisexual in Wonder Woman: Earth One where she straight up tells Steve Trevor that another Amazon is her lover and also in DC Comics Bombshells where she and Mera were girlfriends

Loki is canonically bisexual and generfluid…they have shifted from male to female multiple times stating that both are their real form and Odin, Loki’s father, referred to Loki as “Their child who is both male and female” in a published Marvel comics

And anyone who thinks Deadpool is straight has not only never read the comics but also apparently never been to see either movie either because I’m not sure what part of Deadpool grabbing Colossus’s chrome plated ass and dry humping him made them think “Yeah this is a Totally Straight Hetero Just Bros Being Bros”

Fake fans 🙄 Read the comics. all your faves are queer

Wait did people literally not get the memo on any of this?

Fake fanboys act like google is broken and literally the only way they can acquire information is by harassing queer ppl on tumblr with these inane questions.

kenojuak ashevak (1927-2013) and her color stonecut prints, including the enchanted owl featured on a 1970 canadian postage stamp.

from whetung ojibwa center:

Like many Inuit artists, Kenojuak Ashevak has spent most of her life living on the land in a manner not unlike that of her ancestors. She was born at the south Baffin Island camp of Ikirisaq, and grew up travelling from camp to camp on south Buffin and in Canada’s Eastern Arctic.

Kenojuak first began experimenting with drawing and stone carving in the late 1950s. Her early work appeared in the Cape Dorset Annual Graphics Collections, launching a career that would include numerous national and international commissions, special projects and exhibitions. Her life and art have been the subject of a film produced by the National Film Board of Canada, and a book entitled “Graphic Arts of the Inuit: Kenojuak”, published in 1981.

Kenojuak Ashevak has been accorded many honours for her achievements. She received the Order of Canada in 1967, and was subsequently elevated to Companion of the Order. In 1993, Kenojuak was awarded Honourary Degrees from both Queen’s University and the University of Toronto.

I love it when people try to claim representation in fiction is being taken “too far” to the point where it’s no believable. They’re like:

“What’s next, a mixed-race immigrant on the autism spectrum?” Hi, my name is Rachel, also known as Rachna, and I’m a mixed-race immigrant on the autism spectrum.

“What’s next, a transgender Latino man with chronic pain?” What, you mean my former colleague, Marco?

“What’s next, a Black Jewish lesbian?” Bitch, I know I three Black Jewish lesbians, WHAT’S YOUR FUCKING POINT?

im so tired of the argument being “what’s next? a feasible combination of human conditions other than straight white cis able-bodied dude? that can’t possibly happen!”

“What’s next? A person? A person that exists? A person that is alive along with thousands of other similar people?”

Last year I trained a neural net to generate new names for kittens, by giving it a list of over 8,000 existing cat names to imitate. Starting from scratch, with zero knowledge of English or any context for the words and letter combinations it was trying out, it tried to predict what letters might be found in cat names, and in which order. Its names ranged from the strange to the completely nonsensical to the highly unfortunate (Retchion, Hurler, and Trickles were some of its suggestions). Without knowledge of English beyond its list of cat names, it didn’t know what letter combinations to avoid.

So I decided to revisit the cat-naming problem, this time using a neural net that had a lot more context. GPT-2, trained by OpenAI on a huge chunk of the internet, knows which words and letter combinations tend to be used together on the English-language internet. It also has (mostly) figured out which words and letter combinations to avoid, at least in some contexts (though it does tend to suddenly switch contexts, and then, yikes).

When I trained GPT-2 on the list of cat names using Max Woolf’s colab notebook, it still retained a lot of what it had learned from the rest of the internet. Gone were the strange names like “Tilly-Mapper” and “Balllucidoux” - it had a bunch of real words it could use instead. Here are some of the names it came up with - and the Morris Animal Refuge (who you may remember from that time they used neural net names for their guinea pigs) has given some of these names to some highly adoptable kittens.

First, neural net can do fancy:

TaffetaPompompurMonocleTom GlitterNotionTinnitusCheesemongerM. Tinklesby Linklater Soap

It can also do the opposite of fancy:

Scat Cat ButtholeGangreneMoistureGrotesquePetardOilbagButtwigThe CreamMeatbagDr FartFudge PuttyScumbagConstipationBUTT

And it can also do names ranging from tough to downright sinister:

Miss VulgarLillith The VampElle FuryDeadboltRomeo of DarknessStarmakerFistWarning SignsBibles SmokedThe FirestarterHigher RuneScarlet Be Thy CoatKill All HumansBones Of The MasterMr. SinisterEvil WhispersSpawnSerendipitous KillStranglehold

(Starmaker and Sparky Buttons are from a litter that had upper respiratory infections that damaged their eyes, but even though their world is kinda cloudy, they love to play and cuddle.)

I’m a particular fan of the Very Weird cat names:

HoneystringDr LegTom NoodlePinball ScenePeanutbutterjigglesYou’re Telling A LieBeep BoopThoughtsBobble Bun AtmosphereYou Name ItWhiskeridooSparky Buttons

SeeminglyThis GuyVarious AuthorsChicken WhiskeyFish EspeciallyThelonious MonsieurRingo ShufflesSweet CakesEXTAs (Eye Stalks)Checker Spin Donut QuinTwo Patz GrandpaHe GladFunky MoeFluttering FeelersAccepted A TributeChewie BeanPLEASEGregory ChimneyNotable PRODUCT LEGEND Weird Science PlatinumNot Suitable For Character the Enforcer

Did I mention these cats are adoptable? If you live near Philadelphia, you live near these kitties!

Bonus content: yet more cat names!

THESE ARE ALL GOOD AND VALID CAT NAMES

This is making me want a cat just so I can name it Scarlet Be Thy Coat and mildly unnerve everyone.

Preferably a completely adorable chill cuddler who likes everyone.

how come every “the lesbian flag is excluded” post I’ve seen leads back to an exclusionist op. (I mean how intensely ironic). at this point it smells like dirty discourse and that’s truly upsetting I didn’t want to believe it was cooked up by exclusionists I’m sure there are lesbians who genuinely care about buying a particular flag but why does it always lead back to people who genuinely approve of excluding people like they self-identify with that. makes you think something’s up

I fucking hope yall gremlins aren’t charging up your “lesbians are the natural enemy of aces” horseshit lasers with this because that’s despicable. there will be lesbian-aspec solidarity so help me god I demand it

can someone who isn’t an exclusionist educate me/allay my fears about the lesbian flag exclusion I know that some people have problems with the pink flag but I’m not sure if what I’ve heard is accurate or another dirty discourse

edit: upon research it seems that a number of flags got a bad rap because their creators were exclusionary in some sense

now I don’t personally care as long as the flag isn’t used to dog-whistle problematic stuff, death of the flag-author, it’s all in the use of the symbol and so forth, but “which flag do YOU want” does seem like an appropriate question to ask and addressing the absence as related to people who felt uncomfortable about the flags (from what I’ve heard it’s butches, WoC, aspecs, trans people, and enbies who have various concerns) whether the ultimate conclusion is yea flag or nay flag has been rather absent from “where’s the flag” posts

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts with the new pink-and-orange lesbian flag. And also a couple with the sapphic (yellow, blue, pink and green) flag. So yes, people are trying not to use the lipstick lesbian (all pink) flag, but haven’t quite settled on an alternative that everyone agrees on yet.

Gender reveal parties, and big planned reveals, literally were not a thing ten, fifteen years ago. Don’t let anyone pull that “it’s a tradition!” crap on you, youngsters. They’re LYING. People would either get the ultrasound or not to find out about the genitals, and tell people or not. That was that.

The fuss over “revealing” a baby’s gender in utero stinks of pushback against the shift toward a more nuanced understanding of gender. I mean yeah part of it is social media, and trends catching on, but don’t think for a minute this isn’t part of some regressive attitudes creeping into the mainstream with a cute (blue or pink) bow on it.

I have an 11 year old and we never did that. I don’t know when or where it popped up, but I know it’s not TRADITION.

It’s terrifying how fast this has crept up. My brother in law is only fucking 34 and his brain actually broke a little bit when I told him that nah, we didn’t know the gender of my sister’s incipient sprog ‘cos in my family we…actually don’t care  (is kid, is good).   Like full on, you could hear the sound of a big fat stick jamming  his mental cogs.

In a weird way it reminds me of Elf on the Shelf.

What I mean is, Elf on the Shelf first came out in 2004 and I think it was at least another 5 years or so before it really blew up into a big Thing. (I didn’t hear about it until maybe 5 years ago.) But it’s kind of billed as this TRADITION. Even though it’s creepy and is just about selling toys.

According to Wikipedia: “The first public video of a gender reveal was posted on YouTube in 2008. It is said that the trend of gender reveal videos began to emerge on YouTube in mid 2011 and continued to grow in terms of uploads and views from then on.“

So yeah, not something that’s been done for years upon years.

By all means, come up with new traditions! Something can be YOUR new tradition that is important and meaningful to you … but maybe aggressively gendered “Rifles or Ruffles” cakes or creepy dystopian spy elf encouraging consumerism) don’t need to be among those? And the pressure of “But it’s tradition!” is bullshit.
