Guys, It’s 3am and I wanna talk about old ladies.

I’m on the later side of 20. I’m still young. But I’m starting to realize I won’t be forever. I’m getting grey hairs. Wrinkles. And even though I’ve never considered myself vain, it started to scare me.

Because really any woman can tell you, society is fucking EAGER to tell you what an atrocity an older woman is. And sadly, older women, women who should be role models, tend to further this narrative even more. Asking a woman her age is treated like a sin. We treat getting carded at the liquor store like a tragedy. Any woman on her birthday will joke that she’s “turning 29 again”. After years and years the message gets pretty clear. A woman becoming old is shameful and sad.

So it started to get to me. Before my beau and I went to see Mad Max, I was honestly venting about how disappointed I was in myself for fearing aging, but how I felt like I was becoming more irrelevant by the day. After all, there’s no stories for old women. No role models.

THEN I SAW THESE BAD BITCHES.

GUYS YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THESE OLD BIRDS MEAN TO ME.

Because HOLY SHIT.

Old Women who look badass.

Old Women who are important.

Old Women who are not a joke.

Old Women who are fighters.

Old Women who are survivors.

Old Women who keep old knowledge alive.

Old Women who protect other women.

Old Women who are respected.

OLD WOMEN

OLD WOMEN

OLD WOMEN

We have so much representation for young, beautiful women kicking ass. Even so much representation of tired old men kicking ass. But to see a grizzled, leathery, tough, wise old woman on screen, as a hero? As a role model?

Mad Max was an absolute masterpiece, but that was the part that made me want to weep with joy the most.

I think one pretty cool touch in Snoke’s limited characterization that also nicely ties with the film’s overarching themes is that he so casually discards Rey.

Like, that’s a mistake Palpatine never made. Sheev has always aimed to make the best use of all assets and opportunities available to him. While using Maul as a blunt instrument, he was already courting Dooku as his political pawn and then he groomed Anakin to become his apprentice. He has allowed Dooku to use darksiders like Ventress and Opress as muscle. He established the Inquisitors. And he always still kept his sights on all other potential replacements for Vader. That was somewhat more overt in the EU, but even in Canon, he never left Vader to rest on his laurels, even before an ideal successor in the form of Luke came around. Long story short, if there was an available resource, he used it.

On the other hand, Snoke comes across Rey, a Force prodigy, Kylo’s equal in the Force. He is very much aware of Rey’s potential. What does he do? Does he try to turn her to his side? Does he recruit her to the Knights of Ren? Nope, he smacks her around, laughs in her face, siphons Luke’s location out of her head and then orders Kylo to execute her. Even though he is disappointed in Kylo and his lack of progress and dedication to the Dark side, even though he could just chalk him off as a failed experiment, replace him and start fresh with Rey, like Palpatine wanted with Luke as Vader never fully lived up to what he expected from him either.

But why? As others have already noted, Snoke is kind of a villainious in-universe take on a traditionalist SW fan. The kind obsessed with lore, bloodlines and minutiae in the wrong way. He appropriates the Imperial iconography for himself even though he never had anything to do with the Empire himself. He collects old relics of Darth Vader. He surrounds himself and cultivates a veneer of tradition and heritage. He picked out Ben specifically for his genes.

And that’s why he can’t let him go and that’s why he has no respect for Rey. Rey has no value for Snoke. For all her skill and strenght, she’s nothing to him, because she’s just a random orphan girl from an unremarkable dustbowl of a planet on the borders of known space. Kylo Ren, an inheritor of the mighty Skywalker blood, though? Now that’s a jewel Snoke can put on his crown. How much pride Snoke derived from breaking the grandson of Darth Vader to his will! Could he get the same from a child of some forgotten drunks? So, he’d always choose a conflicted walking disaster that is Ben Solo over a promising tabula rasa like Rey of Jakku. Because Ben is a Skywalker and Rey is a no one.

Which makes Kylo’s blindside and Rey’s role in it all the more powerful. Because Rey couldn’t defeat Snoke herself alone and neither could Kylo. He truly was on the top. But together, they could take him down. And the only reason why Kylo gathered enough will and mental fortitude is Rey. Rey from Nowhere was the gamebreaker after all, she was the wrench in the works of Snoke’s decades-long Skywalker-focused game of chess that orcherstrated his downfall, while he was gushing over his perfect Skywalker apprentice finally becoming the heir of Darth Vader that he wanted him to be.

This is brilliant. This:

“Snoke is kind of a villainious in-universe take on a traditionalist SW fan. The kind obsessed with lore, bloodlines and minutiae in the wrong way. He appropriates the Imperial iconography for himself even though he never had anything to do with the Empire himself. He collects old relics of Darth Vader. He surrounds himself and cultivates a veneer of tradition and heritage.”

I love picturing Snoke as a nasty old fanboy; blinded by his own bloated sense of self-importance, and wasting time listening to the sound of his own voice as the children arrive to overthrow him.

This list includes signs I exhibited while being abused and afterwards, as well as signs I’ve seen other abused youth display, all of which are less commonly recognized for what they are: red flags in disguise.

Being described as a “perfectionist” or having an extremely competitive attitude to the point of experiencing breakdowns if you are not “the best”

Developing a habit of locking the door to every room you enter, especially when at friends’ houses or your own home, or other places you would be expected to feel safe and welcome at

Excessive daydreaming or fantasizing which may be accompanied by restlessness, pacing, or listening to music, and will often last for hours at a time, and may interfere with daily functioning

Experiencing an inability to relate to your peers which may lead to you creating pseudo relationships or obsessions with fictional characters to replace your lack of social interaction

Refusing to look at yourself in mirrors in public, especially when buying new clothes or going into fitting rooms

Showering in the dark because you are ashamed of your body

Experiencing intense feelings of guilt when someone does something nice for you

Hyperfixation on a hobby such as drawing or writing, which is often used as an outlet and a way to escape the abuse

Purposely making yourself appear unattractive

Being known as the shy or obedient child who never acts out

Possessing an unnatural amount of maturity for your age which many adults may have praised you for

Not knowing how to live, having an “I can survive with the bare minimums” mentality

Hoarding food or other objects in your room such as toiletries so you do not have to leave your room. This may be as severe as going to the bathroom in bottles or cans, or having months worth of dishes piled up around your room

Having an anxiety attack if you’re woken up abruptly or if you wake up to loud noises in your house

Never experiencing sexual interest in others, never going through a “boy phase” or a “girl phase”; alternatively, being hypersexual

Intrusive violent thoughts about small animals or children

Having no sense of belonging since you were a toddler, never feeling connected to your childhood town or house, and feeling alienated among your family members

Feel free to add more to this list. If you or someone else has experienced at least half of these signs, it’s very likely you or them has been through some form of abuse.

Hello, I´d like to share with you and your followers something I got from a writer in my fandom years ago. They left already but their words stuck with me. I´m going to share the wisdom with you in my own words.

Every time you get notes/kudos, imagine real people standing in front of you. Did you get 20 kudos? It might seem like it´s not much but would you fit so many people into your livingroom? It´s 20 REAL PEOPLE who decided to read your work and liked it. Imagine giving each of them a hug!

Did you get 50 kudos? Giving 50 hugs would take some time but you could give them cookies instead. Imagine 50 cookies. It´s a lot!

Did you get 100 kudos? Go to a mall and count 100 people, you´ll see it´s actually a lot more than you thought when you saw the number.

Did you get 500 kudos? 1 000? Well, it starts getting a bit overwhelming when you imagine such a crowd but it´s AMAZING that you made so many people happy with your writing. And you´d need a living room the size of a cncert hall to fit them all in :)

I did this and you’re so right- it helps!!! I was feeling super discouraged and lethargic about my writing and not at all motivated. So I went to my most popular story (which I think has about 600 kudos and that’s a lot- I know it’s a lot but it doesn’t really feel real sometimes) and just googled for pictures of a crowd of six hundred people.

That’s a lot of people- that’s waaay more people than I see regularly- and suddenly I feel really motivated to write again because I mean that many people ???? Liked it??? my writing can’t be that bad if they did ????

When fandom was still on LJ, I was writing a story that I released a chapter every week for on Wednesdays. Around 250 people read every chapter on the day it was posted. So, I pictured myself going to a small lecture hall every Wednesday and reading to 250 people, about 20 of which would speak to me after the reading (comments) while the rest of the audience clapped and left, seemingly pleased with what I had written.

It was a great way to motivate myself to get the chapters done. “I have to give a reading on Wednesday! There will be 250 people waiting!”

Sometimes numbers can become just numbers, rather than numbers representing people - but if you can have them be people again, it really puts things in perspective.

Imagine how long it would take if each one of your “Kudos” or “Likes” shook your hand for a few seconds. THOSE ARE ACTUAL HUMANS LOOKING AT YOUR STUFF. Blows my mind every time. Look how many notes this post has. THAT’S AN ENTIRE CONCERT HALL  FILLED WITH PEOPLE.

Three Sisters

According to Iroquois legend, corn, beans, and squash are three inseparable sisters who only grow and thrive together. This tradition of interplanting corn, beans and squash in the same mounds, widespread among Native American farming societies, is a sophisticated, sustainable system that provided long-term soil fertility and a healthy diet to generations.

Corn provides a natural pole for bean vines to climb. Beans fix nitrogen on their roots, improving the overall fertility of the plot by providing nitrogen to the following years corn. Bean vines also help stabilize the corn plants, making them less vulnerable to blowing over in the wind. Shallow-rooted squash vines become a living mulch, shading emerging weeds and preventing soil moisture from evaporating, thereby improving the overall crops chances of survival in dry years. Spiny squash plants also help discourage predators from approaching the corn and beans. The large amount of crop residue from this planting combination can be incorporated back into the soil at the end of the season, to build up the organic matter and improve its structure.

followers do this

Note for self: corn = maize, beans = green beans/runner beans, squash = pumpkin.

beans in the historical case were most likely black beans or pinto beans (the kind you buy dry at the grocery store), but really any kind of bean will work, especially if it likes to climb (they’re all the same species, Phaseolus vulgaris). You do have to make sure the maize grows faster than the beans (or plant beans a couple weeks after the maize), otherwise the vines can actually pull down the maize before it has a chance to get established. And you have to have enough water and nutrients in the soil to support all that growth, or whichever plant is most efficient will steal all the resources and the others will suffer.

Grain+legume in general is an Extremely Valid system, so a lot of cultures have developed variations that fit their own environment and food preferences. In Mali, you might find sorghum+cowpea (black-eyed pea), up in the Andes barley+fava beans, in Southern Africa maize+groundnut (peanut) or maize+pigeon pea, or for A+ high quality animal feed (and/or soil conservation/restoration) oats+vetch… the list goes on.

Reminder for Perisex folx:

💛 Intersex people belong at pride

💜 Not all intersex people are trans… but being cis and trans is very very different to perisex people being cis or trans. It’s common for intersex people to consider themselves neither, not even nonbinary just intersex.

💛 Intersexism and transphobia overlap, strongly.

💜 The idea that “most intersex people don’t want to be in the LGBTQ+ community” is overrated. There’s a portion who don’t want to be, but there are a portion of trans people who don’t want to be apart of the LGBTQ+ community. There are a portion of gay, bi, ace, aro, and more who don’t wish to be. There always has been. But we still welcome every group with a marginalised orientation, gender, or sexual characteristics. Do not speak on intersex matters if you are not intersex, defer to what intersex people have said on the matter. Not vague rumours you’ve heard. And don’t generalise, we’re not a hivemind.

💛 Do not use the word h*rmaphrodite in reference to people. Seriously. Do not. It’s not the scientific word for intersex people, it’s only used with non-human animals.
