If I had the “perfect” body throughout history, this is what I’d look like.

Mid 2010s-2018 - Big butts, wide hips, tiny waists, and full lips are in! There is a huge surge in plastic surgery for butt implants thanks to Instagram models posting “belfies”. 🍑 Even cosmetic surgery doctors have become IG-famous for reshaping women. Between 2012-2014, butt implants and injections rise by 58%.

Mid 90s-2000s - Big boobs, flat stomachs, and thighs gaps are in. In 2010, breast augmentation is the highest performed cosmetic surgery in the United States. 👙 It’s the age of the Victoria’s Secret Angel. She’s tall, thin, and she’s always got long legs and a full chest.

Early 90s - THIN IS IN. Having angular bone structure, looking emaciated, and super skinny is what’s dominating the runways and the magazine covers. There’s even a name for it: “heroin chic”.

1950s - The hourglass shape is in. ⏳ Elizabeth Taylor‘s 36-21-36 measurements are the ideal. Marilyn Monroe’s soft voluptuousness is lusted after. Women are advertised weight gaining pills to fill themselves out. Playboy magazine and Barbie are created in this decade.

1920s - Appearing boyish, androgynous and youthful, with minimal breasts, and a straight figure is in! Unlike the “Gibson Girl” of the Victorian Era, women are choosing to hide their curves, and are doing so by binding their chests with strips of cloth to create that straight figure suitable for flapper dresses.

1400-1700 The Italian Renaissance - Looking full with a rounded stomach, large hips, and an ample bosom is in. Being well fed is a sign of wealth and status. Only the poor are thin.

Why do we treat our bodies like we treat fashion? “Boobs are out! Butts are in!” Well, the reality is, manufacturing our bodies is a lot more dangerous than manufacturing clothes. Stop throwing your body out like it’s fast fashion.

Please treat your body with love & respect and do not succumb to the beauty standard. Embrace your body because it is YOUR own perfect body. ♥️

I haven’t really been thinking about it, because if I get to the stage where I hope for something, I’ll be extra disappointed if it doesn’t turn out. But if I was going full wish-list:

I assume Kylo is going to end up on the Resistance side, so I want to see Hux pull off a cunning coup and kick Kylo out of the FO.

I want Hux to have his moment of triumph where he is finally top dog, and to be given at least a few days to savour it.

Then I don’t mind if he either willingly surrenders the FO to Palpatine, or he’s killed when the Resistance blows up his ship.

Things I would not like (but I think they’re a definite possibility.)

Hux finally getting to the top of the FO only for Palpatine to force him into submission again, so yet again he ends up being the lacky of some Force user.

Hux being killed in some humiliating way that we are supposed to enjoy, particularly by Kylo.

I don’t hold out any hope at all of him surviving, but an easily deniable death (like Phasma’s) would be my favourite for fanfic purposes.

100 Must-Read Classics By Women:

oadara:

I sometimes hear people complain that classic literature is the realm of dead white men. And it’s certainly true that men have tended to dominate the canon of literature taught in schools. But women have been writing great books for centuries. In fact, you could probably spend a lifetime just reading great classics by women and never run out of reading material.

This list is just a sampling of great books written by women of the past. For the purposes of this list, I’ve defined classics as books that are more than 50 years old. The list of classics by women focuses on novels, but there are some plays, poems, and works of nonfiction as well. And I’ve tried to include some well-known favorites, as well as more obscure books. Whatever your reading preferences, you’re bound to find something to enjoy here. So step back in time and listen to the voices of women who came before us.

The Pillow Book by Sei Shōnagon (990s-1000s). “Moving elegantly across a wide range of themes including nature, society, and her own flirtations, Sei Shōnagon provides a witty and intimate window on a woman’s life at court in classical Japan.”

The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu (Before 1021). “Genji, the Shining Prince, is the son of an emperor. He is a passionate character whose tempestuous nature, family circumstances, love affairs, alliances, and shifting political fortunes form the core of this magnificent epic.”

Oroonoko by Aphra Behn (1688). “When Prince Oroonoko’s passion for the virtuous Imoinda arouses the jealousy of his grandfather, the lovers are cast into slavery and transported from Africa to the colony of Surinam.”

Phillis Wheatley, Complete Writings by Phillis Wheatley (1760s-1770s). “This volume collects both Wheatley’s letters and her poetry: hymns, elegies, translations, philosophical poems, tales, and epyllions.”

A Vindication of the Rights of Woman by Mary Wollstonecraft (1790). “Arguably the earliest written work of feminist philosophy, Wollstonecraft produced a female manifesto in the time of the American and French Revolutions.”

The Romance of the Forest by Ann Radcliffe (1791). “A beautiful, orphaned heiress, a dashing hero, a dissolute, aristocratic villain, and a ruined abbey deep in a great forest are combined by the author in a tale of suspense where danger lurks behind every secret trap-door.”

Camilla by Fanny Burney (1796). “Camilla deals with the matrimonial concerns of a group of young people … The path of true love, however, is strewn with intrigue, contretemps and misunderstanding.”

Belinda by Maria Edgeworth (1801). “Contending with the perils and the varied cast of characters of the marriage market, Belinda strides resolutely toward independence. … Edgeworth tackles issues of gender and race in a manner at once comic and thought-provoking. ”

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (1818). “Driven by ambition and an insatiable thirst for scientific knowledge, Victor Frankenstein … fashions what he believes to be the ideal man from a grotesque collection of spare parts, breathing life into it through a series of ghastly experiments.”

Persuasion by Jane Austen (1818). “Eight years ago, Anne Elliot fell in love with poor but ambitious naval officer Captain Frederick Wentworth … now, on the verge of spinsterhood, Anne re-encounters Frederick Wentworth as he courts her spirited young neighbour, Louisa Musgrove.”

The Wow! signal.

A signal sequence that lasted for 72 seconds in 1977 but has never been seen again. The signal appeared to come from a globular cluster in the Sagittarius constellation, but to this day no definite answer for where the signal originated can be given.

This signal…

After numerous checks and re-checks, it’s been found to have definitely come from an extraterrestrial source.

It was broadcast at 1420 MHz. This frequency isn’t used by Earth communications for science reasons. It’s a frequency which neutral hydrogen emits at in interstellar space and is useful in radio astronomy.

Interestingly, emitting a strong signal at this frequency is a likely way to get someone’s attention if there’s anyone listening, because any other radio astronomers in the universe will definitely know of it and be making observations of it.

That really is a very strong signal. Against the backgrounds, it looks to me like about 30 standard deviations (give or take).

Actually, that globular cluster (M55) is just the closest object to the transmission’s source. It appeared to have come from a region of mostly empty space (though it’s worth remembering that distant red dwarfs or brown dwarfs could be too faint to be detectable).

The astronomer who found this and scrawled “Wow!” on that printout was Jerry Ehman at the Big Ear radio telescope in Ohio. Credit where it’s due.

Despite a lot of efforts, this kind of signal has only ever been recorded this one time. There’s a chance we may never know what it was.

It is unlike any other kind of phenomenon ever observed in astronomy. The only logical scientific explanation is that it was one of two things: Either it was a completely unknown and incredibly rare astronomical phenomenon which modern astronomy is completely unaware of – or it was an intercepted alien transmission. There are no other possibilities.

I really love the Wow! signal.

Okay but what does it sound like?

here you go, [profile] im_the_swamp_witch

That sound filled me with unearthly dread

The UK Supreme Court has just unanimously declared that Boris Johnson proroguing parliament is about as retrospectively valid as that episode of Voyager where Paris and Janeway turn into lizards and have lizard sex because something something warp 10 reasons.

…so what happens now? Besides Johnson getting booted from office soon or later?

Apart from me finding out if it’s actually possible to explode from malicious glee, and some excellent updates on the Sweary Bercow Twitter?

Parliament has been recalled and will resume sitting tomorrow. Corbyn has bumped up the Labour Party Conference schedule so he can be back in parliament to call for Johnson’s resignation. The leaders of the Lib Dems and the Scottish Nationalists are calling for the same. Even Farage is making some noises in a fine example of Foolish Boris You Knew He Was A Snake When You Brought Him Home. If Johnson won’t go gracefully (faking own death in a ditch remains a possiblity) I expect his party of entitled sociopaths with no loyalty to anyone will drop him like a sack of shit.

After that we’re in the kind of constitutional upheaval we’ve previously resolved by going to war or asking the Dutch to please give us a ruler we like better. Our constitution’s just three precedents in a trenchcoat and this precedent was a doozy. Whoever’s in charge when the dust settles remains legally obliged to ask for an extension to Brexit if they can’t get a deal through Parliament by mid-October. Unfortunately our tabloid media has to be physically restrained from declaring judges traitors and publishing their home addresses so things will likely get very ugly there.

We should try that Dutch thing again.

Last Jedi Hux is someone else, maybe.

He’s not calm, self-assured fanon Hux that commands absolute respect from everyone who meets him. He’s humiliated by Poe and then by Snoke (maybe for the first time) within minutes of appearing on screen.

He’s not the Hux we had before we knew his first name.

I like him, but he’s someone else I think.

(God, just one POV shot from the floor would’ve been enough, but we were denied)

He certainly doesn’t seem like the same person. I tell myself that he hasn’t slept since Starkiller Base went up and he’s uncertain about whether Snoke’s about to have him executed, and without SKB he suddenly looks assailable, so he knows all the other officers in the FO sense blood in the water when they look at him, and he’s been asked to perform a piece of theatre and take the surrender of the Resistance - he’s absolutely not expecting them to fight back…

Basically I tell myself this is him running on terror, loss, uncertainty and sleeplessness. But even then it’s still quite a shift.

im gonna get a huge wolf-like husky and give it a name like James or David or Sandra or something. Something really human sounding. And convince everyone who comes to my house that theyre just my friend who was cursed with lycanthropy.

I’m gonna renovate my guest bedroom so it looks really lived in. It’s got posters for like. Wolves and stuff on the walls. And a to do list that has stuff like “pay rent” “turn into dog” and I’m gonna put some scratch marks on the walls and the bed and a chain on the heater. And I’m gonna train the dog to sleep there so it really pulls off the whole effect. This is a really long con plan.

I discussed this idea with a classmate of mine and they pointed out that when i was looking for a room mate and said “you need to be out of the house every full moon and be okay with large dogs” they would surely assume that I was the werewolf in this mix and really this is just the beginning of my life as a weird tv sitcom.

Okay but what this potentially says about Elrond and the rest of the elves he was raised by is absolutely heartwarming. Because IRL humans need a certain amount of touch and affection and hugs and stuff. It’s particularly important for things like brain development and while it varies from person to person it’s still more than what elf kids need

And it honestly looks like Aragorn is not only comfortable with this kind of physical affection, he’s used to it.

Which makes me think that instead of looking at young Aragorn, and asking him to be more like an elf to fit in with those around them. Elrond looked at this kid and and thought to himself “how can I be more like what this child needs to thrive”

Aragorn has been raised by Elves since he was only 2 years old. So if we’re going by Piaget’s theories of child development, that puts Aragorn, (who would have been called Estel at the time) in the pre-operational stage. Or somewhere thereabouts. So Elrond is raising this kid when he’s learning to talk. When he’s constantly asking “why?” about everything.

Young Estel would have grown up surrounded by elves and elf children and just by virtue of not being an elf, he probably would have had to deal with feeling less capable than those around him. He wouldn’t have been able to do things like run across snow, and didn’t have the ability to see as far as they did with their “elf eyes” and I am imagining all manner of bruises and skinned knees as he tries to keep up anyway.

And it would take some getting used to his new surrounding, but  I can’t stop picturing the first time tiny little Estel runs full tilt across the room and hugs Elrond’s leg.

And instead of scolding him or asking him to be more like an elf to fit in, Elrond consciously sets aside his own discomfort in the face of what this child needs to thrive. And if what Estel needs is hugs, then hugs he shall have.

Elrond picking up itty bitty Aragorn in a great big hug, and being just as uncomfortable about it, but hiding it well because this child was entrusted to his care and he will not let the boy grow up feeling unwanted or unloved.

And so Aragorn grew up surrounded by elves, but he grew up to be someone who naturally and unselfconsciously displays affection.

I think that speaks volumes about Elrond.

He raised this kid from age 2 to age 20 (so the majority of his formative years and well through his teens) and it was around then that Elrond’s own daughter gets back form visiting her grandmother Galadriel and meets this boy for the first time.

So I have NO IDEA what the various stages of child development would be for an elf, but I doubt their exactly the same.

Sure, Elrond might seem distant now, but there is no way Aragorn became the guy who is constantly overstepping elves personal boundaries to display affection without Elrond choosing to sacrifice his personal boundaries for the sake of a child’s well being.

ineffable-wives:

True, but the momentary panic in Haldir’s eyes here is hilarious

LMAO wasn’t Aragorn raised by Elves? He knows what he’s doing

The funniest thing about LOTR is Aragorn constantly overstepping the Elves’ personal boundaries. They come from a race where touching your heart is one of the highest signs of affection and he’s over here pulling them into bear hugs and slapping shoulders like a brawny middle-aged dad

so you’ve probably seen the post going around detailing the horrific human rights abuses in what are, undeniably, concentration camps in the US…. accompanied by the suggestion that the only thing you can do is call your senators.

it’s unfathomable to me that someone would see we have actual nazi death camps in our country, and think the solution is writing to the politicians who allowed it to happen.

i have yet to see a post on any social media that has meaningfully helpful suggestions for how to get involved, so:

this article offers a number of suggestions including getting involved with your local chapter of Sanctuary Not Deportation, which connects faith groups to offer sanctuary to immigrants fleeing ICE. it also has a comprehensive list of immigrant-lead organizations to get involved with or donate to, as well as a link to crowdfund for detainee’s phone bills, which allows them to contact their families, legal counsel, and inform the outside world of the realities they are facing in detention.

here is a link for finding detention centers near you. there are many rallies directly outside of these camps you can participate in, and physically going to them is crucial in liberation efforts.

posting bond for detained immigrants is still one of the best ways to get people out of the death camps, even though ICE is increasingly unwilling to participate. the linked article has a list of both federal and state-by-state bail funds/organizations.

host a refugee if you have the room. Room For Refugees is still trying to build a network in the US. keeping people out of ICE’s grip and preventing detention in the first place is the best thing we can do because these camps are becoming more and more impenetrable.

help the legal organizations helping immigrants near you; if you’re anywhere close to NYC the New Sanctuary Coalition needs volunteers/donations, and if you’re on the border get involved with Texas Civil Rights Project.

on top of free legal aid, the NSC specifically also organizes rapid responses to ICE raids, which is one of the most important things you can do – there are many local networks already in place, but here is how to organize a rapid response network if your city doesn’t have one.

one of the easiest things we can all do is learn the rights of immigrants in this country, and how to react to ICE raids. spread this information to everyone you know and keep the toolkit in easy access on your phone.

the only government policy that can make an immediate and tangible impact is municipal policy; push your local politicians to support or build sanctuary city initiatives – here is a toolkit for local political action.

finally, get involved with local antifa and leftist orgs! follow their social media to get updates on calls to action and protests happening near you. i cannot stress enough how important it is to be aware of efforts in your own city. antifa international’s tumblr is one page you can follow, but please research the orgs specifically in your area that are fighting the rise of fascism. the torch network has a list of chapters in several cities around the US, but again this is just a place to start.

i encourage everyone to find at least ONE thing from this list you can do, beyond donating. i know we are all stressed and have our time/energy zapped by capitalism, but if we do nothing, nothing will change. and please share these links wherever you can – copy and paste this post or at least share the first article i linked.

fascism is here, NOW, and we need to step up, because no one is going to invade us to free the camps this time.

I forgot how much of a solid dynamic the whole Canto Bight subplot had between Rose and Finn and DJ.

I thought I just found it randomly neat to ship them as an OT3, but they have some legitimately good stuff going on.

Like hear me out, but their mutual dynamic gives each character some individual shine.

I just really like their individual interactions, all the fraught expressions, the emotions, the distrust and vague growing trust, the general quirkiness of the unlikely band of misfits. (BB-8 works great as glue between them all, too.)

Rose and Finn bond together better when they’re set against the low cynicism of DJ and the Canto lifestyle of money/survival over morals.

Rose works well in some undefined spot between hardened anger and vulnerable sweetness, and DJ being there provides a nicer target for that bitterness than Finn’s well-meaning nature.

Then again, DJ’s don’t-join philosophy is an interesting complication in Finn’s plot line of learning loyalty towards ideals. His display of war as profit hits a similar spot to Rose’s own elaboration, interestingly enough, only she sees it as an incentive to fight harder for her ideals and he sees it as an incentive not to mix at all, and that makes Finn’s own choices all the more complex.

And finally, Rose and Finn bring out a more nuanced side to DJ as a sort of marginal, messy, unwanted figure. He’s untrustworthy and has socks with holes in them and ugly clothes and a sloppy demeanour, but the two younger characters start seeing him as valuable, as admirable due to his mental capacities, they see behind the exterior, which was kind of his resentment towards them in their first scene together.

Also Rose’s necklace being used as a sort of symbol of bartering loyalties is nice, it’s nice how it brings out Finn’s protectiveness, it’s nice how it for a moment brings out something of actual emotional value in DJ when he returns it to Rose and she has that expression of warm gladness.

So when Rose and Finn are betrayed, there’s a disproportionate sense of loss from them, there’s a sort of cringing apology from him.

And yet… why be so surprised? I mean DJ is just a messy minor character they met in the jail of a space casino a few hours ago. It’s… the equivalent of Leia and Han suddenly befriending a guard outside of Jabba’s palace, it’s random and oughtn’t be anything but short-lived.

The thing is, you got a feeling that something larger was ripped out in the process of betrayal, and not just the Resistance’s hopes.

It’s the trust they built towards him, and that’s what I find interesting, how the three of them managed to create a compact unit in such a short space of time, a dynamic so close that in spite of all evidence to the contrary you still subconsciously figured they would belong together on the same side.

And that’s plenty interesting potential to me for a shipping narrative.

So, Crowley and Aziraphale need to snap to do their magic/miracles/whatever you wanna call it, right? I mean, we see countless examples of this:

Other examples include Crowley fixing his Bentley after the crash, turning off the car lights/TV/… by snapping etc etc etc

Except they don’t really need to do that, do they? Because we also see quite a few examples where they don’t snap but instead do some other movement:

Aziraphale also fixes her bike, adds a bike rack to the Bentley and then removes the gears from the bike all in this scene definitely without snapping and without even really doing some other obvious movement.

You could even argue that the paper burning here is an example of that:

After all, no one snaps their fingers there (and Crowley doesn’t appear to have moved much either).

And of course, the most prominent example that kills us all everytime:

Further examples include Aziraphale saving them in the church scene (he literally just stands there), Crowley stopping time or whatever during the final battle at the air base, Aziraphale changing his clothes in Paris by just kinda gesturing up and down his body…

Which means, in conclusion: Crowley and Aizraphale don’t actually need to do any kind of obvious movment when performing their miracles, they are just gay and dramatic (same) and do it for The Effect™

One of the big ways we cut down on our personal plastic use both at the farm and at my house is that we shop in the bulk foods sections at the grocery store.

I know this is like– big corporations do 99% of the consuming, but. Since recycling isn’t actually a thing, then reducing your use is really the way to go, and I’ve gotten into this mindset where I don’t tend to generate a lot of waste in a day, and it helps me feel better anyway.

So we joined a co-op and for a while we were going and getting everything in these plastic bags, and after a while I was like, this is actually not helping at all, I now have all these plastic bags that can’t really be recycled and can’t be reused for much.

At the co-op in Albany, Farmsister shows up with a crate full of jars, and goes to the customer service desk and gets a tare weight sticker on each one. The clerk just weighs them and writes it down, so when she fills it, the checkout clerk knows how much to subtract from what she’s buying for the weight of the container she brought in.

Our co-op in Buffalo doesn’t have a desk like that. So I asked one of the checkout clerks, and she was like “Oh! I mean, I have a scale here, that’s how I ring stuff out. I’ll just write the tare weight down for you!”

So now we bring stuff– mostly Mason jars, but old peanut butter jars, and my whole-ass flour canister from home, and whatnot– and get it weighed on our way in, and then we don’t have a zillion plastic bags to not recycle that make a mess in the kitchen.

Ask at your grocery store. Ours, like, thanked us. It was strange.

My next step is going to be making a bunch of produce bags out of old sheets, because Dude still insists on putting every individual vegetable into a separate plastic bag. The tare weight is negiligible, I feel like, so I’m not that worried. (Bananas are sixty-nine cents a pound. A two-ounce cotton bag is not going to break me, at that price. I just weighed one of my small tote bags. It’s .12 lbs, or 1.92 oz, and that’s for a bag with handles). I have some old track pants that are nylon, I might cut those up and use them too; nylon just frays so you gotta use French seams or a serger but if you do that they’ll hold up pretty well. I feel like that might help keep vegetables a little more moist, maybe? I’ll have to experiment.

The other thing I do is that before I recycle containers, since I gotta wash them out anyway, I use them a couple of times. Might as well get just a tiny bit more mileage out of them before consigning them to the “recycling” which we all know is really trash. It doesn’t look as cool as having fancy glass custom containers for everything but then I don’t care if the pasta sauce stains it or if it gets cracked or thrown out.

Get a pidge here <3

I made pigeon pins! I love pigeons and think they deserve more time in the spotlight. <3 Each pin also comes with some insightful pigeon facts too.

“The private prison industry is set to be upended after California lawmakers passed a bill on Wednesday banning the facilities from operating in the state. The move will probably also close down four large immigration detention facilities that can hold up to 4,500 people at a time.

The legislation is being hailed as a major victory for criminal justice reform because it removes the profit motive from incarceration. It also marks a dramatic departure from California’s past, when private prisons were relied on to reduce crowding in state-run facilities.”

Bravo, California!

The sooner you realise that you can do literally whatever you want as regards to your gender presentation (or lack thereof) and just take whatever bits and pieces you like from wherever, the sooner you can start enjoying life.

A super loose painting of Aziraphale. I love to imagine him to be super strong actually but it just takes a lot for him to actually show it.

I see all your “tv aziraphale and crowley as women” cast and ??? why are your actresses so young when the actors aren’t? Besides, we already have the perfect pair?
