âI felt that the [TNG] writers and producers could not escape from their own essential rigidity in their attitudes to women. They were continually featured as sexual objects, as softer, weaker, and therefore - it always seemed to meâsecond-class individuals. And because I believed and still do that the show represents what our underlying philosophies are, it doubly irritated me that in that area I thought we were failing. There is a kind of boysâ club about Star Trek, do you understand? Itâs in the air all around the show, in the producers, in the front office, in the writersâ building. Our actresses were not finding sympathetic ears for the things they had to say, and I think at times they simply got exhausted by the battle.â

This was getting a reblog anyway. Then I saw who said it, and hit the thing so hard my iPad flew out of my hand.

I know Gates McFadden and Marina Sirtis both found it ridiculous that in episodes with combat scenes they did stupid girly stuff like drop heavy objects on enemy heads while their male colleagues were using weapons. Gates in particular had a whole lot of combat training as an actor. As Stewart says, their protests were not heard by the higher ups. It got better in later seasons, but clearly there was a presumption about gender roles that treated women differently from men.

I donât think itâs a coincidence that the nu-atheist movement slowly turned in to the incel-blackpill-4chan fascism weâre dealing with now. A lack of religious belief doesnât in any way make someone a bad person and we should be criticizing organized religion and all the harm itâs done. But the cynical dudebro atheist culture had a distinct ideology - it wasnât about science so much as using the concept of science as validation for a bitter, joyless view of the world.
I remember when people in that scene loved to talk about how no oneâs pets actually loved them, and people who deluded themselves into thinking their dog wasnât just using them for food were idiots. Thatâs just science, are you triggered snowflake? But in reality, actual science has shown that your dog does have a positive emotional connection to you, one that goes beyond seeing you as a provider of necesities. So why would these self-proclaimed logical, rational men ignore the actual science in this case? Because they have been raised in a culture that rewards cruelty and dominance. Genuine scientific thinking involves abandoning your preconceived notions and coming at a subject with an open mind, but they never did that. They just looked for validation for what they already believed - everyone is inherently cruel and selfish, nothing has any meaning, we come into a heartless world for no reason, fuck kill and die and nothing matters.
This deliberate rejection and mockery of any kind of sentimentality, spirituality or connection with the land and other living beings is unhealthy. Itâs settler-colonial manhood taken to itâs logical end point, an angry refusal to genuinely feel anything, trust anyone or make yourself vulnerable in any way. Itâs the mentality that human beings are all enemies who gain from each otherâs suffering. It isnât actually based in logic or reason, just a long oppressive ideological history, and it really isnât surprising that it became violent as fast as it did.
Say that!

Originally, the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? was set in 1992, although later editions brought the date forward to 2021. The film makers initially identified the date as 2020, but settled on 2019 because 2020 sounded too much like the common term for perfect vision, 20:20.

Started this chapter in the wrong pov, so Iâm dumping this here for safekeeping in case I want it again.
Finn let himself into the Resistanceâs infirmary late at night with the unofficial blessing of Dr. Kalonia. âSheâll make herself sick,â sheâd said. And âshe listens to you.â
He still found all of it almost impossible to believeâthe fact that they did listen to him. The fact that here, outside the Order, doctors cared about their patients. Superiors cared about their underlings, and squad membersâno, he corrected himself, he must try to remember there were no squadsâfamily members cared about one another.
Cared to the point where it became obvious even to him, sentimental as he was, that caring was a problem.
General Organa sat on an uncomfortable-looking chair of native woodâthey had found this facility abandoned on a low tech planet the coordinates of which had been supplied by the Order. The planet seemed recently deserted. It had probably been cleansed by the Order in preparation for settlement, the natives rounded up and sent to be retrained as miners, labourers and grunts. He was very glad they were not doing this in the Finalizer, but it felt too close even so. It felt like the durasteel walls he had once escaped were closing back around him, and he wanted to run again, to get away to somewhere where he could breathe without filling out a form in triplicate.
âIâve been sent to tell you to get some sleep,â he said, smiling. He was always smiling these days, most of the time so nobody remembered he was one of the enemy, but sometimes, surprisingly, just because he wanted to. âDr. Kalonia says they both need to be in the coma for at least a week. So, you know, if you want to be awake then, you have to sleep now.â
Poe had swept in like the born rescuer he was and scooped both Rey and Kylo out of the vacuum before they died. Nothing really miraculous about that, everyone raised on a spaceshipâwhich meant everyone in the Order except for the old fogeysâknew that space was survivable for up to ninety seconds unprotected

Reddit has a number of communities dedicated to helping people out financially. Although Iâm not personally familiar with the site and how these subreddits function, the success rate seems to be higher on there than it is on tumblr.
While thereâs absolutely nothing wrong with you using a website you are familiar with to ask for help, Tumblr isnât the best when it comes to helping people out money wise; with that being said, here are some alternatives that may work better in your favor (Note: these WILL have stricter rules in place than posting a donation link to tumblr would- they have this to prevent scamming but it may bar people from receiving assistance in certain situations so please keep this in mind).

one thing Iâm grateful to my mom for is telling me from a very young age that if a man ever says heâll kill me if I donât do what he says, that I should fight and die. that it would be better to die than to be brought to a second location, it would be better to die instantly than live a little longer after god knows how much violation. i know that other peopleâs moms gave different advice, to be quiet so you can live and get away. little girls all got some kind of advice on what to do, though, huh? like⌠WHEN a man wants to hurt you. itâs surreal to think about how this shadow affects the landscape of girlhood
YES my mother said the same thing. Plus bite and scratch to get DNA, scream that you donât know him, cause the biggest scene you canâŚ.but DO NOT get in a vehicle/go anywhere with him because âyou have to assume that if you donât get away right then, then you wonât get away at allâ.
Your mom was right. That is standard self-defence advice â fight, scratch, scream, aim for testicles, eyeballs and and the throat. Use your teeth, your nails, your elbows, whatever you can. Maul the fucker.
If someone grabs you and intends to move you towards a second location, fight like your life depends on it:
Because it does.
And in case you think, âIâm smaller than him, I canât do shit!â my trainer likes to tell this one:
Think of a cat. Cute, fluffy, adorable, right? Much smaller than you.
Imagine picking up that cat⌠and then having a friend dump a bucket of water over it.
Hell no, right? Youâd get straight-up shredded. Even a big solid guy wouldnât want to do that.
You donât have to be the dude. You just gotta be the cat.
You donât have to be the dude. You just gotta be the cat.
Thank you for this, Iâm taking this with me in all walks of life.
Can reach the eyes? Stab and scoop them from his sockets. Reach his balls? Crush and twist. Hand over mouth? Fingers are now baby carrots. Chomp chomp
If youâre on a bike, cling to it. Make it harder for them to snatch you because now they have a bike to deal with as well. Be embarrassing. Make a fool of yourself to make scene. Scream bloody murder the whole time youâre able.
Show no mercy for you will most likely be shown none as well. Go down in a rage. Make them regret even thinking of considering you.
No one is intimidating right after theyâve been poked in the eyes.
If heâs got both hands on you heâs not defending vulnerable spots. Youâve either got at least one hand or your teeth and legs free and it takes 8 pounds of pressure to do serious damage to a throat.
Do not be quiet. Do not fight fair. Do not hold back. If youâre being attacked and someoneâs trying to make you move, whateverâs gonna happen if they get what they want is worse than whateverâs gonna happen if you maim or kill somebody and get away.

Tumblr certainly makes it seem like there are more exclusionists then there actually are. This post made me feel better :)

Thatâs why I donât believe that Hux is going to be killed off in the first few scenes of TROS, because Pryde would be his replacement, presumably, and why replace Hux with another uppity officer of high rank. It seems totally redundant. Iâm hoping that Pryde will be used as a tool to further Huxâs story! Itâs reaching but Iâm hopefulâŚand trying to remain positive about this movie!

Role swap au where Zuko was the Avatar who got frozen for a hundred years, so when heâs rescued from the ice instead of a goofy twelve year old Katara catches this mysterious teenager with long hair and a cool scar and a fucking DRAGON
Katara: BOY???? HOT BOY?????? HOT TEENAGE BOY?????????
Zuko: *speaks*
Katara: nevermind I hate him
How does Aang factor into this? I ask because the more I think about it the more I want him to somehow be trying to capture the Avatar.
Aang is 112 years old, decided he was going to be Zukoâs airbending teacher, and refuses to take no for an answer
Aang: Aw, the new Avatar doesnât want me.
Aang: *gets out a weighted net* Time for Plan B then.
JDJSHJABDBFJSH
Look, you know how you keep a net from falling on you? YOU AIRBEND IT, SUCKA. Air comes right after fire in the cycle so itâs not like the guy has any other options. Do you want a flaming net falling on you? No? Then learn to airbend. Or this tiny old man will cart you away like a trussed turkey and lecture you about the power of laughter, going with the flow, opening your chakras, and other hippie shit.
Sokka, slouching against a fence, not moving: Oh nooooooo, that creepy old man stole the Avataaaaaaaaaar.
Sokka, sitting down on the ground: We should dooooo something.
Sokka, pulling out his lunch: Otherwise he might actually learn something. That would be teeeerrible.
Katara, indignant rage coursing through her body: Sokka!!!!!!!! We have to go look for him!!!!
Sokka: Might! Actually! Learn! Something! Katara!
Katara: *wavers*
Katara, also sitting down: We have to go look for himâŚ. *gets out her own sandwich* But, maybe after lunch.
I love that this transforms Aangâs role in the full Team Avatar familial situation from the baby of the family to the Grandpa with weird hobbies
My brain, immediately after the âAang wonât take no for an answerâ post:
Aang: Iâm gonna ride him! *jumps on Zukoâs shoulders*
Actually, I thought a bit more about this: If Aang is âgrandpa figure who wonât fucking stop teaching Zuko to be a better and more spiritually fulfilled person,â then what is Iroh doing?
And then it hit me.
Iroh: *sitting in a teahouse at a paisho table*
Iroh, deadpan: I must capture the last airbender.
Iroh: It is the only way to make sure the powe rof the Avatar wonât be turned on the Fire Nation.
Iroh: Only then will I be redeemed in the eyes of the Fire Lord for my failure at Ba Sing Se.
Iroh: âŚ
Iroh: Anyway, itâs your turn.
About half of the B plots are just Iroh finding new ways to feign incompetence and bad luck so that his political watchdog canât prove that heâs letting Aang - and by extension Zuko - get away.

Sometimes Iroh plays paisho with Aang, whose entire disguise during these games consists of a painfully fake mustache.

You donât swallow 8 spiders a year in your sleep. Itâs so unlikely for a spider to crawl into your mouth at night that thereâs no formal medical or scientific record of it ever actually happening. Spiders get most of the information about their surroundings through vibrations - so your snoring, breathing, and heartbeat usually scares them away.

Are you telling me spiders george was an outlier and should not have been counted?

Barrier to Stop Plastic Waste From Reaching the Sea Launches in Amsterdam:
rjzimmerman:
Excerpt from this EcoWatch story:
The scourge of plastic waste that washes up on once-pristine beaches and finds its way into the middle of the ocean often starts on land, is dumped in rivers and canals, and gets carried out to sea. At the current rate, marine plastic is predicted to outweigh all the fish in the seas by 2050, according to Silicon Canals.
Now, a Dutch start-up has launched a barrier device to remove plastic from canals and rivers while allowing fish to swim right through, as The Guardian reported.
The Great Bubble Barrier, an innovative start-up, teamed up with the Amsterdam municipal government and the regional water board to launch their device last week in Amsterdamâs Westerdok Canal, at the tip of cityâs historic canal belt. The canal is an ideal starting point since it empties into the IJ river, which feeds the North Sea Canal and then the North Sea, as Silicon Canals reported.
âThis is an important milestone,â said Francis Zoet, co-founder of The Great Bubble Barrier start-up, as DutchNews reported. âThis is the first project that is going to stop plastic from ending up in the sea.â
The device consists of a pipe nearly 200 feet long that is punctured with holes and laid at the bottom of the canal. It sits at the canal bed on a diagonal line. Compressed air is pumped into the pipe, which then forms bubbles as it leaves. Since it is positioned diagonally, pieces of plastic are pushed toward the side of the canal by the bubbles. Then a floating platform captures the litter, as DutchNews reported.
Preliminary tests of the project, which has taken three years, show that the device is capable of ushering 80 percent of the canalâs plastic waste to its banks. Furthermore, it works 24 hours a day and does not interfere with shipping or wildlife, according to The Great Bubble Barrier.

âDorianâ is such a lovely name, but every time I look for its origins, the internet tells me that it wasnât a thing before Oscar Wilde, and, knowing Oscar Wilde, that probably means he did actually name the protagonist of his only novel after a historical Greek style of architecture.
Actually, we do know the origin of Dorianâs name!
Before Oscar Wilde, the last modern work where the word âDorianâ was prominent was J. Addington Symondsâs âA Problem in Greek Ethicsâ (1883), where he talks about all the different tribes of Greeceâespecially the Doriansâand how they were all fond of comradely love ⢠and alla that. Itâs basically the first article to go, âActuallyâŚthe gays are cool? We stan?â and all the gay kids went completely crazy over it for, like, the rest of the century.
So yes, Oscar Wilde absolutely sat down and read this article talking about the âheroic idealâ of âDorian loveâ and then went and wrote his book 8 years later like, hell yeah, this is FOR THE GAYS, and Iâm going to give my protagonist the GAYEST NAME POSSIBLE.
wait so he was named after a group of people from a specific area of Greece who were known for being gay? thatâsâŚthatâs like if someone wrote a book about a gay woman and her name was literally Lesbian

TIL NASAâs plan to dispose of corpses in space is to freeze them in the airlock and then violently shake the body with a robotic arm until it turns to space dust.

The flying Stormtroopers were a good idea in theory, but the Stormtrooper-shaped holes in the walls and the constant smell of burning rocket fuel are making me have second thoughts.
Update: It is too late. The Stormtroopers have grown too attached to flying and refuse to surrender their jet packs. At this point, Iâm too fearful of an uprising to argue with them. So, it would seem they fly now and that is that.
Update 2: Poe was horrified by the flying Stormtroopers. Saying as they fly around and cause mayhem, I had thought heâd find a kindred spirit with them, but it seems I was mistaken.

I really hate to side with Gollum on this, but âwhatâs in my pocketâ is not a riddle and should not have counted.

I utterly adore ebooks and they are so much more accessible to me than regular books, and I am 95% thrilled that I donât have a ton of physical books anymore.
BUT.
I hate that I canât loan or give away my books. Like there are some books I have that I donât like and may never read, but which someone else might love to have! And I would love to give them to someone! But I canât. I canât share these books with anyone else.
Edit: WAIT. Apparently I can loan books. But only once, which is absolute bullshit. If itâs my book, why canât I loan it out as many times as I want??
Depending on how you feel about the ethics of digital high seas piracy, there are several tools online that will help you strip the DRM from ebooks and convert them into a more shareable form. (You can find additional tutorials by searching âCalibreâ and âRemove DRMâ)
I have read about this and think I should do it, because otherwise apparently I donât own my books and Amazon can just take all of my collection anytime they want, but any technical thing that is more complicated than âclick âInstallâ and get itâ is very intimidating to me.

listen to me: you DO NOT always need to give it your 100%. you really do not. because letâs be honest, youâre human and youâre simply not always going to be able to. there are days when you can only give it your 80%. or your 50%, or heck, even your 10%. and THAT IS OKAY. only skimming one paragraph, only solving one equation, only memorizing 5 words is better than not doing anything because you have this idea in your head that things are only worth doing when you can give what you consider to be your 100%. 10% is better than 0% and some days that is all you can give. it will still add up, and you will still succeed, i promise.
