Going to see Star Wars: TRoS on Thursday. I’m feeling oddly positive about this, if only because I already know that this time I won’t be feeling miserable amongst a fandom that’s celebrating. That was a very alienating experience. Going into it already partially spoiled takes a lot of the pressure off.

Okay.

There is a new Wattpad competitor called Dreame.

I suspect a lot of people here read stories on Wattpad.

Dreame is similar in concept.

BUT.

Dreame has been attempting to headhunt writers from Wattpad. Sounds good, right?

Nope.

One writer was offered a $60 advance…to sign over the RIGHTS to his book. They’ll license the print book rights back for 30%.

Please do not sign with these people as a writer.

And please do not give them money as a reader…they are either a scam or just completely clueless. Either way, you’re better off sticking to Wattpad and tracking down writers you think deserve money to pay them directly ;).

Dreame also tried this on AO3. They got an account, posted what looked perfunctorily like a fanfic but was actually a recruitment pitch, and then ran around on high-volume fanfics making comments asking writers to join up and directing them to their recruitment post, in violation of AO3’s TOS. I had a comment from them and AO3 took down the post after I reported it.

Although I will say if you check out their site there’s some real fun badfic reading amongst their paid authors.

They’re doing it on Fictionpress as well. I got an email from them back in December & ignored it, figuring there was something off in the offer, but I didn’t realize just how scammy it was in its terms.

You’re smart.

They are claiming for one of their “contests” that they will “invite professional book reviewers” to review your books. No professional book reviewer is going to review a web series.

Some more gems, because I went to their site so you don’t have to:

To get the reward for daily updates, you have to update DAILY. You get two days off a month.

They are allowing fanfic authors to claim that they have the rights to their work.

And yeah, I’m sure there’s fun badfic reading, but let’s not give them too much traffic, okay? :P

This is the first I’ve heard of Dreame, but that all sounds at least a little shifty.

I’d encourage any writer - regardless of whether they plan to publish - to do some research on how legitimate publishing works and what the red flags are.

Here are a few articles on red flags and publishing scams, which can help writers make a more informed and safer choice:

Guys, seriously beware! I used to write on Wattpad and had a short story on there called “Molly, Molly” anyways a Dreame “Editor” pm’d me asking to me to switch over there and that I’d get paid. Right off the bat I said no, and they still pressed and pressed. I SAID NO 3 TIMES before they finally got the message.

If you are outside India, I am practically begging you to reblog this

Last week India passed a blatantly anti-Muslim law that seeks to naturalise millions of immigrants, except if they are Muslims.

In August of this year, India revoked the autonomous status of the Kashmir region, putting a communication blackout on the state. Kashmir has entered the fifth month of no internet and heaviest militarisation of any region in the world.

India is a secular, socialist republic. This bill is anti-constitutional and against the principles on which the country was founded

Naturally, there have been protests across the country. At the forefront of the protests are students from India’s public universities.

Police opened fire on peaceful protestors in Jamia Milia Islamia University in Delhi, and Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh.

Ever since then, the ruling fascist Hindu nationalist political party, the BJP, has been doctoring videos and sending fake news all over the internet, discrediting protestors and labelling them as terrorists

India has already seen too much religious violence, please please signal boost this, call your representatives, make them aware, get them to make statements. The only thing India and itd dictator Modi care about is its image abroad

Danish scientists have managed to extract a complete human DNA sample from a piece of birch pitch more than 5,000 years old, used as a kind of chewing gum, a study revealed Tuesday.

The Stone-Age sample yielded enough information to determine the source’s sex, what she had last eaten and the germs in her mouth. It also told them she probably had dark hair, dark skin and blue eyes.

And genetically, she was more closely related to hunter-gatherers from the mainland Europe than to those living in central Scandinavia at the time, they concluded.

“It is the first time that an entire ancient human genome has been extracted from anything other than human bones,” Hannes Schroeder of the University of Copenhagen, told AFP. Read more.

Could you imagine what a chaotic duo Anakin and Qui gon would of been?

Qui gon would encouraged aaaallllll of Anakins reckless qualities.

He’d be like ‘Master should I do the thing?’ And Qui gon would be like 'What is the force telling you?’ 'It’ s telling me to do the thing.“ Then do the thing’

Anakin then proceeds to jump out of a 20 story building into oncoming traffic.

'Feel, dont think padawan.’ Anakin then proceeds to never think again.

They actively encourage each other to disobeyed the council.

Mace Windu is DONE with these two.

"Qui gon where is your padawan?” “He’s on Rancoor 5.” “But the council specifically told you both…” “The living force must be listend to.” “Dont give me that crap.”

And it gets twelve time worse when the Clone wars hit.

Disobeying orders left right and center, never sticking to one plan, Qui gon refuses to wear armour, and when they do stick to a plan its reckless as hell.

And Obi wan is dragged along for every thing as they council teams them up in hope that he will control them.

He cant, he usally just goes with it.

And then cries into Codys shoulder about the level of stress they both put him through.

“They made me fight a pit dragon Cody. A pit dragon!” “I know sir.” “They had no plan and they both nearly got eaten.” “I know sir.” “I cant deal with them together!” “I know sir, have some tea.”

Even though Cody knows Obi wan is JUST as reckless as they are.

Removing Lawn to Make Way for More Habitat | Habitat Network:

plantyhamchuk:

“While lawns perform some important ecosystem functions, like storing carbon and carrying out photosynthesis, they are biodiversity barrens. Previous research on lawns has shown they are amazingly similar in species composition and contribute to the homogenization of urban landscapes and loss of urban biodiversity. They tend to consist of only one or two species of grass, dramatically limiting the potential wildlife they can support. And, since diversity begets diversity, the monolithic nature of lawns means fewer organisms can thrive there. Some birds, like American Robins, occasionally visit lawns; however, these heavily-mowed, often chemically-treated, water guzzling, homogeneous areas simply do not provide the elements of habitat needed for supporting the diversity of wildlife central to balanced ecological systems.”

altho frankly the fact that “you nonbinary people will probably default as your agab anyway so you’re privileged and not really trans” is, like, common transmed-and-co rhetoric kind of enrages me because do you really think nonbinary people would default as their agab if they had the opportunity to be openly nonbinary? if that was, like, a common thing that many people can just do? because i’ve spent a long time hating myself because being nonbinary meant that i wouldn’t have a happy future ever because i couldn’t and still can’t imagine being commonly accepted as nonbinary. like i just can’t get all this acting as if the lack of opportunity to exist as a nonbinary person and still be treated as human is “a privilege” rather than misery lol

I SETTLE FOR my agab because people are transphobic and I’m not as dysphoric. I “default” as female. Do not mistake my willingness to misidentify myself to avoid drama as defaulting to anything. I am genderfluid. Many non-binary people don’t default as anything! I am male, female, and non-binary. They are neither male or female; OR they have a preference that is not in any way tied to their genitals. They might allow people to use “he” or “she”, but that doesn’t always mean it’s right. They’re hiding, the same way other trans people sometimes have to. We would be much happier if we could just tell people who we are instead of what they will accept.

I was talking about this in my LGBTQIA+ support group last week.  As a non-binary person in a world that insists on the binary, I will never be correctly read by other people.  There is not some magical option where I will walk up to a service counter or have a conversation during a job interview or otherwise interact with strangers in which someone will correctly read me as non-binary and use my correct pronouns (zie/hir/hirs).  It’s just… not on the table.

I have two wrong options presented to me: being read as male (likely a trans male, since I can’t stealth even if I desperately tried), or being read as a cis female (which is soul-destroying).

At the moment, my haircut seems to be causing people to read me as a cis female lesbian, which is also not who I am.

I just simply don’t have time or energy to go around correcting people about my gender, especially when A. dismantling the gender binary is complicated and not something most people will readily understand, and B. would often involve me trying to teach service workers about my gender, when a lot of times they’re overworked and underpaid and only using the terminology they’re forced to use.

it’s the same nonsense as bi people not being “really oppressed” bc if they’re in a different gender relationship people will see them as straight

being misread as cis/het is not privilege. it’s erasure.

For as long as I’ve been on this platform, there’s been a huge debate going on about the best way to adress climate change, and whether it is a good idea to take individual action when huge companies are doing more to contribute to global warming than any individual ever could, and that these companies should be held accountable, rather than individuals being forced to change their way of life.

Here’s my thoughts on the subject: The two go hand in hand, and always will. As well, big, societal changes aren’t going to happen unless individual changes are made first, on a massive scale. No company is going to work towards making their products more environmentally sustainable if we all are willing to buy their products as they are. Protesting a companies methods is all well and good, and it is very important to tell them what you like and don’t like about what they’re doing, but just saying ‘the big companies are the major cause of climate change, and are the ones who should be working to fix it,’ while a true statement, will just lead to no change happening. If we do want to save our planet, we have to make the changes we can make, and force the larger societal impacts that come with that. Companies are motivated by one thing: money. While they have that, they aren’t going to make any changes, and the only way to make change in society is to change ourselves.

The other important point here is this: only buying environmentally friendly, crulety free products is not feasable for everybody. Not everybody can afford to do this, and I recognize that I am incredibly lucky to be able to, and that I am writing this from that place of privilege. This is in a lot of ways a part of the system: many workers are underpaid and are unable to make these choices about the things they are buying, and many of these companies sell their products very cheaply. It is the reality of the system that we live in that better quality products are generally harder to get, which is why we need to work to dismantle that system. If you are in a place where you can afford to make these choices about the products you buy, I encourage you to do so, and help force these changes on companies who won’t make them otherwise. If you do need to purchase from these companies for any reason, that’s ok too, you can still speak out against them and work to hold them accountable for what they’re doing.

Societal change and individual change go hand in hand, and it is important we recognize that, and use the individual choices we can make to help make bigger changes in society, and in turn make it easier for people to access more environmentally friendly, better quality products. The fact is to save our Earth, change needs to be made right now, and big companies aren’t going to make it. It has to be us.

Everyone: Omg listen to this amazing podcast!!

Me, a person who can’t pay attention to anything that doesn’t have visuals for more than 3 minutes without being bored/distracted:

Hi! ADHD kid here. I know this feeling well! And because I’ve thought about it a LOT, I have some suggestions

In order not to get bored, I have to have four conditions met

Visual engagement (interesting to look at)

Audio engagement (interesting to listen to)

Mental/critical engagement (interesting to think about)

Tactile engagement (interesting to fidget with)

Sometimes a medium will fulfill all of them!

Video games are great because they’ve got their own visuals and music, they’ve got little tasks for me, and you operate them with the buttons or joysticks or keys or what have you. That’s all four boxes checked!

Some activities are NOT great. They miss boxes, or only partially fill my meter for engagement in some categories.

Sitting in a classroom at school requires me to sit still, and unless the teacher/professor has a good powerpoint there’s not much to look at. And maybe the lecture is review so it’s not even that mentally challenging. At least, not much that won’t distract me. But then you can add little tasks in to fill the gaps — if I doodle in class while I’m taking notes, I have something for my hands to do and something I like to look at! And it’ll fill up the rest of my interest in the “thought” category.

I almost never listen to podcasts without doing something else.

Podcasts for me are like lectures; they fill up my audio meter, and most of my interest meter. But I’m still lacking visuals and touch. Personally, I find that drawing can actually take away from a story unless I’m really just doodling little flowers or something. But here are some things that have worked for me!

Gardening - digging, prepping soil, weeding, picking out the rocks from the dirt, pruning, watering - all the gardening tasks require a lot of visual and tactile engagement, and a relatively small amount of focused attention.

Knitting, crocheting, embroidering - VERY tactile and visual activities, and unless you’re following a difficult or unfamiliar pattern you can just kinda do it. You maybe won’t make a tapestry, but a simple striped scarf or beanie hat will be alright for this.

Coloring books! I have this book of mandalas to color in, which is great for doodling while listening to a story

Video games! As long as they don’t have dialogue or things to read. I couldn’t play Bloodborne, or hit a story milestone in Skyrim, but like, the dungeon crawl part of Skyrim, or a game like Journey where there’s not much text, is great! I listened to the TTAZZ episodes while clearing Dwemer ruins

Taking a walk, if you’re somewhere you’d feel safe walking with headphones. If you don’t feel super safe walking alone, maybe get a couple friends with a similar issue together and have the hiking/podcasting equivalent of a silent disco

And a final note of things to avoid

Text or reading, as mentioned above - I can’t scroll Tumblr while podcasting because the language processin part of ya brain can either read or listen not both. Can’t read a book, nor write, cant hold a conversation without missing things

Watching tv, or generally trying to take in another story. I can only focus on one story at a time

Chores, homework, paperwork. For me, cleaning my room mostly means sorting through a lot of old papers and drawings, and it distracts me and often, again, involves reading. I’m better off listening to music while I do these things

Now go forth and listen to some podcasts!!

another thing you can do is lots of podcasts have transcripts that you can follow along with! i struggle with processing things auditorily too so not only does this check the visual box (looking at words) but it also checks the fidgety box if you scroll along with it and make the words bounce

ok. I have been silent but it is time. let’s talk about the magnitude of the double crossing, double agents and straight up fuckery that’s going on here.

a team of bounty hunters have been order by dooku to abduct chancellor sheev palpatine.

dooku has been ordered by darth sidious to carry out this plan.

dooku has tasked a team of bounty hunters with the job of completing the abduction.

obi-wan has been sent undercover as a bounty hunter to assist in the abduction.

only the jedi council and sheev palpatine know the bounty hunter rako hardeen is actually obi-wan.

obi-wan will act to prevent the abduction from the inside.

the abduction of sheev palpatine.

which was order by sheev palpatine.

because darth sidious is sheev plapatine.

sheev palpatine knows all of this is taking place.

sheev palpatine arranged his own abuduction.

sheev palpatine then placed a double agent to prevent his abduction.

the abduction he ordered in the first place.

sheevception.

((This just got me thinking, was there ever any point to this? Was it all a complicated plan to make Anakin more pissed with the Jedi and drive a wedge between him and Obi-Wan? Was it to see if Anakin was ready to replace Dooku? Or was Palpatine just bored one week, so he called Dooku and said “what if we hired a bunch of bounty hunters to kidnap me just to fuck with the republic?”))

yknow theres a lot of pressure to be successful, particularly on artsy kids whose professions are seen as useless unless theyre famous, but life is fucking hard and sometimes things dont turn out

but i think thats not bad. my dad has wanted to be a musician forever, and hes rly pretty good. but then he joined the military to get away from an abusive family, and then he got married, and then he got divorced, and a lot of horrible shit HAPPENED. he has ptsd and severe anxiety and he could never really get back on the horse. and he never made it as a musician, and now hes 53

but i grew up in a house full of instruments, and he can play all of them, and some of my earliest memories are of him playing guitar on the front porch and me thinking there wasnt a better musician in the world. so. even if you dont get to the stars, exactly, what you do isnt worthless. its not a waste of time if life is difficult and you cant make it, or if you arent famous, or if your work doesn’t influence thousands of people. it will influence someone

there are a million ways to be happy and a million ways to be a successful artist. we create what we do to enhance the human experience and relate to each other and improve ourselves. theres something to be said for just doing that,,,for the sake of doing it, yknow

I love that Tolkien took a paragraph aside in Bree, after all the horses were run off, just to let us know that A) Merry’s ponies were going to be fine and B) Mr. Butterbur would not, in the long run, suffer financially by the incident. He understood what was really important.

Tolkien would have let us know how the Cabbage Man was doing.

One of the recurring themes in Tolkien’s works is that the world belongs to the baker down the street as much as it does to the Lord of the Golden Hall.  In almost every city we visit, Tolkien talks about shops and living arrangements and where people work and how they get their food.

One of the noticeable things about Tolkien’s Enemies are their complete disdain for the little people – even the ones that are loyal to them.   Smaug, Sauron, Saruman are all rich, powerful, knowledgeable.   All of them are disdainful of those weaker and smaller than they are, while Sauron and Saruman are obsequious to those stronger than they are (until they can become stronger).   They don’t value parties and lunch and working in the garden.

They’ve missed the point of life.

self care is different for every person because self care means targeting the main issue that’s bringing you down and treating it

if you’re overworked, stressed, or feeling bad about your appearance, self care might be pampering yourself, drawing a nice bath, doing a face mask and your nails, ordering in and watching a movie and putting aside chores so you can relax and recharge for the evening

if you’re depressed, self care might be taking care of all the little tasks that you’ve been putting off like cleaning your room, or changing your sheets, or sending that email, or running that errand

the end goal of self care is to feel better. sometimes pampering yourself doesn’t make you feel better because you’re just further procrastinating on dealing with the issue that’s actually bothering you. self care isn’t always pretty but it doesn’t matter, what matters is that you feel better once you’ve done it

the thing about lotr that the movies don’t convey so fully is how the story is set in an age heavily overshadowed by all the ages before. they’re constantly traveling through ruins, discussing the glory of days gone by, the empires of men are much diminished, the elves (especially galadriel) are described as seeming incongruent, frozen in time….some of the imagery is even near-apocalyptic, like the ruins of moria and of course the landscape surrounding mordor

this is a strange thought to me, somehow: that the archetypal “high fantasy” story is set at the point where the…fantasy…used to be much higher? this is not the golden age; this is a remnant

LotR is Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome of the elves.
