Watch: A documentary is explaining the many ways movies, TV shows and ads makes fat people feel cursed and invisible

When you only see yourself depicted on the screen as a sidekick, a villain, a predator, or a joke, how does that affect the way you view yourself in real life?

Gifs: Fattitude

WATCH THE PREVIEW

“At the end of the day, fat is portrayed mostly just as a joke,” says Lieberman. “Or a monster,” adds Averill. “That’s the two-sided coin.”

Something that doesn’t get talked about is how this affects people who aren’t technically fat but who then fear becoming fat - oftentimes more than they fear being poor, or sick, or turning into mean, hateful people.

Being fat is not the worst thing that a person can be. It’s nothing. It’s a body type. It’s flesh. It’s actually quite lovely. We know now that it doesn’t equal unhealthy. I’m skinny fat and I’m probably a lot less healthy than my sister, who has a degree in physical training, but who is viewed as unhealthy because she’s bigger than me.

We all stand to benefit from undermining and deprogramming fatphobia. It kills fat people through lack of decent medical care. It kills not-fat people through eating disorders. It ruins so many lives. It’s a crock of shit and it has to go.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the nu-atheist movement slowly turned in to the incel-blackpill-4chan fascism we’re dealing with now. A lack of religious belief doesn’t in any way make someone a bad person and we should be criticizing organized religion and all the harm it’s done. But the cynical dudebro atheist culture had a distinct ideology - it wasn’t about science so much as using the concept of science as validation for a bitter, joyless view of the world.

I remember when people in that scene loved to talk about how no one’s pets actually loved them, and people who deluded themselves into thinking their dog wasn’t just using them for food were idiots. That’s just science, are you triggered snowflake? But in reality, actual science has shown that your dog does have a positive emotional connection to you, one that goes beyond seeing you as a provider of necesities. So why would these self-proclaimed logical, rational men ignore the actual science in this case? Because they have been raised in a culture that rewards cruelty and dominance. Genuine scientific thinking involves abandoning your preconceived notions and coming at a subject with an open mind, but they never did that. They just looked for validation for what they already believed - everyone is inherently cruel and selfish, nothing has any meaning, we come into a heartless world for no reason, fuck kill and die and nothing matters.

This deliberate rejection and mockery of any kind of sentimentality, spirituality or connection with the land and other living beings is unhealthy. It’s settler-colonial manhood taken to it’s logical end point, an angry refusal to genuinely feel anything, trust anyone or make yourself vulnerable in any way. It’s the mentality that human beings are all enemies who gain from each other’s suffering. It isn’t actually based in logic or reason, just a long oppressive ideological history, and it really isn’t surprising that it became violent as fast as it did.

can I just say as a brief aside how much I love Hux. He looks like the deranged personification of the most unhinged British foreign policy choices circa 1890. He looks like he should be wearing a pith helmet and screaming about the colonials. He looks like he should be in the jungle trying to locate Kurtz and hating every second of it. He looks like he is Kurtz. He looks like a boy they left behind on the island at the end of Lord of the Flies because he cannibalized Piggy. He looks like he should be wearing jodhpurs and puttees and using his manservant as a human mounting block to get on his camel. He looks like a Rudyard Kipling short story. He looks like he thinks World War I is going to be over before Christmas. He looks like he might inherit a small barony and will immediately evict the tenants. He looks like he engineered an elaborate plot to get another boy expelled from Eton because he snapped him in the ass with a towel in the locker room one time, He looks like murdered a commoner for saying Queen Victoria was fucking John Brown.

Turn of the century lookin ass motherfucker. I love him.

The couple met while Tista was working at a trans legal clinic. Dipan is also transgender.

More over at Pink News.

“This wedding will boost the transgender community. It will  have a huge impact as the trans community fears being  rejected by society. I wish Dipan and Tista a happy married  life. They are both wonderful human beings,” said Aparajita Bose, a member Human Rights Law Network Kolkata, to The Times of India.

I’ve written about Kylo Ren and Hux’s “do one right thing and then die” arcs as though the arcs are similar and it’s other characters’/the audience’s reactions that are different.  With some reflection, though, I realize that’s not really true.  Rey and Leia don’t save Kylo in reaction to his making a good choice.  They do it to give him another chance to make a good choice.  You know, like the chances he got in TFA and TLJ and rejected.  He makes the right choice this time, but he hadn’t done anything before they saved him to indicate that he wanted to.  Leia’s choice to give up her life for him and Rey’s choice to heal him are acts of pure grace.

By the time Hux and Finn have their final exchange, Hux has already done two things that could argue in favor of his redemption.  He’s given the Resistance information about Palpatine’s return that enables the whole plot of TRoS and he’s saved Finn, Poe, and Chewie from execution.  In return, he gets neither recognition nor gratitude; the Resistance heroes leave him to die.  He doesn’t ask to go with him, but they certainly don’t offer to take him either.  And yet in the two weeks since the movie I opened I haven’t seen anyone criticize the heroes for prioritizing justice over gratitude. Even the people who believe Hux should have gone with them put the onus on him to ask rather than on them to offer.

That one of the differences between these sets of heroes is gender has not escaped my attention. Star Wars is the product of a culture where more pressure is placed on women to sacrifice themselves for and forgive men, including men who abuse them, than on men to forgive anyone. But what a difference from the original trilogy, where Darth Vader is forgiven by his son and only his son.  Leia, the same Leia who would later give her life to save the son who cost her both her husband and her brother, doesn’t even go to his funeral.  This isn’t to say that’s feminist (or not) of her, but Leia, in the OT, is not defined by expectations placed on her because of her gender. Grace and forgiveness can be good things, but when expectations of who should give and receive them break down along gendered lines, that’s a problem, and it’s troubling to see how the sequel trilogy has regressed in this area.

pianopadawan:

So, in the light of TROS and my changing impressions of the characters, I’ve made a few changes to my main GingerPilot WIP series Enemy Lines. I am continuing this series and it will be canon-divergent on many levels. Other than that, here are some changes that I thought you might want to know if you’re following the series (and thank you if you are; it means a lot to me).

The series has three parts that I will be working on simultaneously:

1) Descent - between Ep. VI and Ep. VII (Read it here.)

2) Revival - post-Ep. VIII (To be posted.)

3) Liberation - post-Ep. IX (Read it here.)

My plans for Descent are largely unchanged by TROS other than the inclusion of Enric Pryde as a character (because Richard E. Grant is awesome). Poe is not a spice trader. The “sketchy past” he doesn’t like to talk about for TROS is some of the things he did as a Resistance spy in the First Order, especially his relationship with Hux and how it “ended”.

Hux and Poe rejuvenate their relationship in Revival. Hux lives and gets to the point I have him at the beginning of “Liberation”.

MAJOR CANON DIVERGENCE FROM TROS

The series is M-rated as a whole, mostly for violence though there are some mature themes. The violence is especially true for Revival. Hux survives Pryde’s blaster shot, but what happens afterwards is not pretty.

I am not going to be writing Finn/Rose for this series. Although this series is canon-divergent, there are some aspects of TROS that have changed the way I am inclined to write Finn and Rose. I do not have anything against this ship and I still support it in other contexts. I just don’t think I can really do it justice with this fic. It was always a side ship in this series to begin with, but I’m sorry if anyone is disappointed by this change. I am in the process of revising bits of Liberation accordingly.

If you’re a Rose/Jannah shipper though, there’ll be things in this series for that.

Other than that, as Palpatine would say, everything is proceeding as I have foreseen.

I’m sorry that I am so bad at updating. I have some big things going on in real life right now, but I’m going to try and squeeze in writing, time constraints and writer’s block permitting.

#the onus is on the good side to be the better people (via [personal profile] galadhir)

I agree, but this does not seem to be a popular view.  I imagine it would be difficult for Hux to believe they’d take him given his views on the “Resistance scum,” but they live down to his expectations, and that is disappointing.

And then there’s the question of how this scene is framed for the audience.  Of all the things Hux could have said about why he’s helping the Resistance (and which you’ve talked about in other posts) his lines are calculated to sound spiteful and petty.  Which, one, is a little unjust considering how horrifically Kylo has treated him since TLJ, and two, how is his feeling spiteful about Ren so distasteful that it trumps him risking (and giving!) his life to help the Resistance?

Yeah, Hux is never going to say something emotionally or psychologically vulnerable, no matter how true it is, to members of the Resistance, and Finn should know that. Saying the things that people expect to hear from you is a First Order survival tactic which Finn used himself throughout TFA.

Plus Hux can say all he likes that he wants Kylo to lose, but it’s not Kylo he betrays to the Resistance, it’s Palpatine and his fleet. As we the audience already know, Kylo is not necessarily on board with Palpatine either, and if Hux had wanted to betray Kylo he could have done so long before the Exegol stuff came to light.

Your players are faced with an ancient Sumerian curse! However, since the early ancient Sumerian language was only used for recording tax debts, it turns out to actually be an ancient Sumerian bill.

and therefore they need to get hold of some ancient Sumerian coinage and bring it to the ruins of the ancient Sumerian tax office, because the Sumerians had a pleasingly direct way of preventing tax evasion, namely horrifying curses.

well I don’t have any coin but I have these copper ingots, lovely copper ingots, from a very reputable merchant, never heard a word said against him, very thorough with his paperwork, anyway they’re guaranteed pure copper and proper weight, so can I pay my tax with those?

Keyhole garden

Is your backyard too hot and dry to cultivate the vegetables you have only dreamed of? Keyhole gardens were developed for the sole purpose of maximum crop output in the hottest and driest of conditions. Their low cost, low maintenance, and versatility make them a desirable gardening option for your yard and for gardening across the globe.

Humanitarian foundations spearheaded the development of keyhole gardening to help improve lives around the world. Keyhole gardening is simple enough to be taught to school-age children in third-world countries where the children then use the concept in their homes and villages. A single keyhole garden affords enough abundance to provide a large family with a year round supply of vegetables.

Keyhole gardens are circular raised bed gardens. The larger outer circles are where crops are planted. The center portion of these gardens are active composting baskets. Small aisles are built to access the compost baskets. Keyhole gardens get their name from the bird’s eye view of these features.

We’re currently at about 5.9 MILLION hectares of land burned (almost 14.5 million acres). That is more land than the size of Belgium. The Amazon fires were only 906,00 hectares or 2.2 million acres in comparison.
The smoke is making the air toxic to breath, there’s so much it’s travelling over to New Zealand.

Over 500 MILLION animal are dead, worries that entire species have been wiped out and many now close to extinction and have lost basically all their habitat.

19 people are dead, dozens upon dozens missing and unaccounted for, so many more injured, so far.

Victoria has now announced a State of Disaster for the first time in history. And people are being evacuated by sea from a town cut off by fires after being forced to beaches and out onto the lake to survive (pictured in post above).

They’re worried the fires in NSW and the fires in Victoria will join up and create one giant wall of fire up most of the East Coast.

Our Prime Minister visited one of the devastated towns for a photo op/publicity stunt where he FORCED a woman and a firefighter to shake his hand. He then turned his back on them and ignored them when they tried to talk to him and ask for help.

Most of our firefighters are volunteers and aren’t getting paid, they’re getting their welfare payments cut for missing appointments while they’re out there risking their lives to try and bring these fires under control. Some have lost their lives. Many have lost their homes.

Our country is burning, we’re scared, we need help.

Here’s what’s happening in Australia at the moment.

For some context:
Mallacoota is a tourist town, usual population is a little over 1000, but at peak tourist times, it can be as high as 8000.

There was an estimated 4000 there today, when the extreme heat, peaking at 49C/120F, combined with high winds, to spark a large, intense fire in the bushland around the area. This pretty much blocked off all ways out of the town, leading to all 4000 people being evacuated to the beach, with the emergency plan basically being “If the fire comes this way, get in the water”

Thankfully, the wind did change direction, and as far as I’ve heard, most of the town was spared, but this is how bad the drought, heat, and fire situations have become in australia.

And our government still refuses to make solid policies on climate change.

on september 11th 2001, two planes crashed into the world trade centre in new york city. It was a massacre. 3000 dead in a matter of 24 hours. the entire world was in shock of the atrocity, the brutal, diabolical murder of scores of innocents.

the american government reacted accordingly. a full investigation was launched to hold the culprits responsible – what nation could have sanctioned such a brutal attack on so many innocents? what kind of soulless country could, regardless of vendetta, allow such a heinous crime?

by 2002, the united states had their answer. the investigation was complete. A 600 page document known as the Congressional Report on 9/11 was released. approx 20 pages detailing the workings of the nation responsible were produced. The report was published.

Except the name of the country responsible for 9/11 was redacted in the report. blackened out with a sharpie. It would remain redacted for 14 years. The country in question? Saudi Arabia.

Instead of declaring to the world who was involved in orchestrating 9/11, the u.s. would hide this information for over a decade.

Instead, they would point fingers at Iraq, whilst knowing that iraq had nothing to do with the attack in the first place. They would orchestrate journalistic propaganda in the new york times about “weapons of mass destruction” – a narrative that had been proven false by their very own intelligence officers, a narrative that had been shot down by every journalist that had ever stepped foot in Niger (where the purported ingredients of mass destruction were coming from). Regardless, the New York Times would dutifully publish the perverted stories anyway. NYT editors would say “to not invade iraq is the bigger mistake”.

In 2003, the months of building up false stories in the media, propaganda in every mainstream newspaper, journal and t.v. show would pay off. The u.s. would invade iraq.

from 2003 -  2011 the country of iraq would be brutalized in ways never seen before by mankind. modern, 21st century warfare would decimate the very spirit of iraq. at least 460 000 innocent, iraqi civilians murdered in 8 years. entire generations were wiped out in less than a decade. we will never know their names.

waves of sexual violence committed upon “captured” cities ensued at the hands of american soldiers. many of the survivors, if not dead at the hands of their occupiers, would take their own lives. we will never know their names.

in 2011, the blood in iraq is finally dry. we’ve leeched all of it. we’ve procured the natural resources we came for – it’s time to head out. the so called WMD we came for were never found, they did not exist, they were never real to begin with. A far cry from how things got started, we start seeing articles about the falsehood of the iraq war. the same publishers who willingly handed out propaganda to the masses about WMD in Saddam’s hands are now saying “wait…we’ve made an error.” the narrative shifts. the occupation ends 3 years after a new commander in chief is granted the power to end it. in its wake we leave behind military bases and mercenaries that are ready to activate whenever called upon.

That same year, the u.s. supports various popular movements across the arab world. tens of regimes are flipped.

and in that same year, using the same weapons left behind by valiant american rapists and invaders, an army of another kind of mercenaries is born. they call themselves ISIL, then ISIS.

ISIS vows to cleanse the muslim world of shia muslims, minority sect muslims, christians, yezidis, Jewish people. ISIS also vows they are enemies of the u.s. America vows vice versa. Their feud is a celebrated one. ISIS, the evil nemesis of the Brave & Courageous America.

But then, 2012 happens. America, losing their influence and control over the levant, start funding ISIS factions. America starts funding Al-Qaeda factions.

The same NYT that once convinced us that Iraq had WMD is now INSISTING that these al-qaeda factions, that themselves claim to be brothers of al-qaeda, are moderate rebels simply looking for democracy and liberation. people believe it.

America’s proxies in the levant go on to destroy the region in unimaginable ways–and then, 2018 happens.

Iraqis & Iranians destroy ISIS. Indisputably, action from both nations led to the destruction of ISIS, now a paid member of the U.S. military. America, once using ISIS and AQ factions to regain control over the levant struggles to position themselves as the heroes – attempting pathetically to play both sides of the same coin. Again, the same way outlets like NYT backtracked their Iraq war propaganda, they start apologizing for identical mistakes in naming actual american funded terrorists as “freedom fighters.” another cycle ends.

ISIS is gone, but the real loss is America’s. They’ve lost the barbaric feudalistic control they once held in the region via ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Their terrorist assets have been reduced to ashes by a people they once themselves invaded from 2003 - 2011.

This brings us to today. The united states has assassinated Qassem Soleimani, Iran’s second in command. this is akin to another nation murdering the likes of mike pence, joe biden or dick cheney. it is an act of war. 4000 troops have been deployed to the Iraq-Iran region. It is an invasion.

And just as in 2003 the NYT & MSM justified the faulty invasion of iraq, and just as in 2012 the NYT & MSM justified the funding of ISIS & AQ factions, in 2020, a new propaganda will circulate to justify the illegal assassination of sovereign leaders.

New propaganda will circulate to justify a new era of bloodshed in Iraq & Iran and the rape and murder of innocents.
New propaganda will vilify young, brown children as terrorists.
New propaganda will circulate to return us to the year 2003.

There is nothing I can do within my capacity to help anyone. I am completely useless in saving any of the lives that will be taken in the next several years.

All I can do is ask that when you see a piece of information that attempts to justify the actions of the u.s. on foreign soil, in any foreign nation, that you reduce it to ashes. They lied to you in 2003, they did it again in 2011, they are doing it again in 2020.

Reject the lie. It’s all we can do.
