My Leia/Hux shipper heart is SO DAMN pleased. :DD You have no idea.

But also, on less silly note (I’ll make this canon one day you’ll see) I’m glad they realised they make Leia into just as terrible fanatic as their foes in a lot EU material - and that lack of ex-Imperials or their children on TR side until well into post-TLJ was disturbing! - and tried to change this.

[profile] nibi_nix

gamebird:

It is frustrating that so much of the supplementary material (and, ya know, the first two movies of the ST) were all set up toward an obvious ending. And then we have these idiots JJ and CT talking about how they’d been written into a corner and had to struggle. The ending was OBVIOUS. All they had to do is write it!

starrywarsrey:

Ugh! Yet another reason to hate Ben Solos death.

nite0wl29:

God now I hate this movie even more!!

tcookies:

Yup!

To add more context, at the end of Battlefront II’s Ressurection campaign, after Iden Versio’s death, Zay tries to return to D’Qar to see Leia but is denied landing by the Resistance because they are evacuating Crait (beginning of TLJ). Leia tasks Zay with going to the Outer Rim to gather more allies for the Resistance since their numbers are dwindling.

In the novel, Star Wars: Resistance Reborn (published November 2019), it follows the aftermath of The Last Jedi and the Resistance journeying around to rebuild their forces. Zay finds leads from Iden’s ex-Imperial days and Leia is hesitant to recruit these people but also understands that people, as Iden Versio and Del Meeko had proven, cannot be judged for their past mistakes.

augustintodarkness:

[profile] maemaela Oooh, damn I haven’t read that book yet! I had no idea!

…okay now I’m even more confused by TROS.

maemaela:

It’s in the tie in novel, Resistance Reborn. They recruit a bunch of ex-Imperials. Including this one crazy lady who brutally murdered one of the other Resistance pilot’s dad, if I remember correctly?? There’s a big blow up when everybody gets together, but Poe diffuses it by saying that they’re all on the same team now bc they all hate the First Order and people can change and grow and try to atone for their mistakes.

That scene was why I was EXTRA pissed off when they killed off Ben Solo.

augustintodarkness:

Whaaaaaaaaaaa?

Source please, if there’s one

tcookies:

Friendly reminder that, after the Battle of Crait, a large chunk of the Resistance are made up of ex-Imperials 👀 People even Leia didn’t want to recruit and only did so because she knew there was no choice and needed every person. So if you think the Resistance would’ve given Ben a death penalty for being a war criminal… lmfao wow the hypocrisy…

This is not a forest:

probablyasocialecologist:

The offset model purports that forest loss in one place can be mitigated by planting elsewhere – take the political promises of ‘no net biodiversity loss’ for HS2, the high-speed mega-construction set to slice through the countryside.

But clearing vast areas of old pasture or ancient woodland would take 500 years to replace. Trees are slow, ancient, careful creatures that cannot be easily coerced into an anthropocentric regime that values quick, blueprint solutions.

Plantations are worlds away from ancient woodlands. Worryingly, by paying for carbon offsets in the form of new plantations, consumers and businesses are given the false impression of having no negative effect on the planet. What we should be focussing most of our attention on is protecting the ancient forests that exist, not planting trillions more trees.

Whilst the urgency of tree-planting for climate change mitigation is very real, our conception of what a forest is matters. Visions translate into material outcomes, and if we’re not careful, we’ll end up with a world blanketed in rows of short-rotation monocrops, poor in biodiversity, ironically justified under the banner of environmentalism.

Hello Nonny

Can i be brutally honest here? The whole “Leia died to bring Ben back” is just to me another way our fandom is coping with the fact that Leia didn’t do jack. We literally have her doing more than her fair share for someone else who is not her son while she is there fighting a war against her son. Its like this movie and the people are using some another Jungian dictionary than Jung himself  while writing what means what in screen.

You cannot just magic away someone else’s darkness away, especially since even if its true, that makes Leia shitty that she didn’t make an effort to do that  for , i don’t know? 30 years? is that how long Ben is born for and is violated by Snoke for?  You cannot blame genetics for darkness either, it directly violates what Lucas meant when he made this fantasy.

For someone who claims to want Ben back she is doing nothing to make it happen. She wanted to send Han in first movie to bomb him and only talk to him if he come across him. She is fighting an all out war against him and is making no covert effort to communicate . She refuses to have an armstice or a parley with her son who is supreme leader. She makes ZERO efforts beyond bare minimum to talk to him even before he fell to darkness in Bloodline. The problem is i get at least before TROS why they did this because they have justify why her relationship with Ben detoriated the way it did but now it all looks damning. It looks as damning as when Rey in Resistance Reborn pretends in front of Leia that what Kylo told her was a story, that Luke didn’t confess at attempted murder so ofc Leia won’t follow up with any question and would be grateful that Rey made an effort to redeem her son from her own good heart. What an ingratiating asshole!

So when Leia purposefully lies down and dies it just looks like its something she had to do to become Force Ghost to help Rey in her quest to kill Palpatine , since she is dying anyway with Ben’s name a nod to her lifelong bare minimum effort to prove to herself that she is a good mother. At worst? It could be interpreted as Leia deliberately messing with Ben;s head so he dies at Rey’s hand.

I know that is not want the writers wanted to portray but this is what it is .

Ben is right. He knows he was send away because of him being so much like this man he never met but is biologically linked forever by his own mother and she never was able to accept him because of that. When he was all alone in bumfuck nowhere, she had no time to call and communicate with him for months. When news broke of Anakin’s paternity, she didn’t bother to fly out to meet him when politically it made so much sense that Leia play the “you harmed by poor child” card against Senate and let the scandal cool down . When news broke of his so called arsonory and even murder charges, she made no effort to contact him or find if he is safe or hear his side of the story. The next Ben hears his mother is head of a personal militia and is searching for the man who attempted to kill him in his sleep not him!

He is not an idiot. Snoke might have fed lies to Ben about what his family thinks of him but god knows Leia made it oh so easy. Disney;s version of Leia is one of those workaholic mothers who had kids because everyone has them and is shitty to them in the name of “i should be allowed because men were before!”

Ben is right , he was 100% right and even when the plot wanted to imply he is wrong and only his excuses prevents him from going back to Leia, it undermines itself when we see Leia never come back even posthumously for her son when he is good, redeemed and fighting for his life and victory of her precious Resistance all alone in the pit!

I remember once some BNF in her meta said that Lucasfil has terrible track record with women and motherhood and how the keep on fridging them? Well now we can say they are not technically dead but might as well be useless and are now shitty mothers instead because she had a career. Which is not that good stereotype either and plays on the same trope that Mothers are not people . Hera is the only remaining SW mothers left who is not fridged or turned into an emotionally unavailable asshole. Pray for her!

Can wind, water, and solar power meet the world’s energy demands? According to 47 peer-reviewed research papers spanning 13 different groups and 91 authors, it is entirely possible.

Some studies looked at renewable energy options on a world-wide scale, while others focused on what independence from fossil fuels would look like in specific regions.

“In every case the findings are that the technology exists to achieve 100% renewable power if the political will to achieve it can be mustered.”

Actually life is beautiful because the sound I make while trying to breathe around hot food sounds like my dog trying to eat an apple. When I yawn my cat tries to put his face in my mouth like a little dentist man and when he yawns I put my finger in his obligate-carnivore trapzone and we both know he will not hurt me. When I do not fold my clothes, they do not hold it against me.

I am demonstrably sad, and lonely, and full of fear. But there are other people who will hold my hand, who will point out the hawk overhead, who will give you That Look in a public place. The other day at a coffee shop a child said “look! It’s snowing!” so all of us strangers went to go look out the windows. It wasn’t the first snow and it won’t be the last but wasn’t it lovely, like that?

How wonderful to live in a world where birds and frogs both say beep! How wonderful to have an ocean of beautiful sharks with their dinosaur teeth! How wonderful the moon and her changing face, how wonderful the bees and their dancing to communicate, how wonderful shrimp and their forbidden layers of vision! How wonderful, you, and what you will give the world! The way we love things enough to spend entire blogs devoted to them? How people will let me explain my Pokemon team to them? How we will both jump at the scare in the movie, how we laugh so loudly, how it feels to give someone your baking? How wonderful to be alive. I am sorry for forgetting.

This is the process of getting better. With wonderful people and wonderful strangers and wonderful friends: I am getting better, slowly. Thank you, whoever you are. In some way, you’ve been wonderful, and left a wonderful place in the world to ripple out to me. In some small way - isn’t it beautiful - I promise, you’ve been helping.

lyledebeast:

I was looking back over the comments on my Hux indignation post from last week and I noticed an interesting commonality between them.  We are astounded that Kylo is meant to be more forgivable than Hux because Kylo is an emotionally volatile violent bully; how is Hux worse than that?

I’m not trying to argue that Kylo is objectively worse than Hux.  As others have pointed out, neither is worse than the other in the context of the narrative.  But subjectively, yes.  I do think Kylo is worse than Hux, and it doesn’t surprise me if other people feel the same.  Probably none of us are ever going to be in the same room with a person who has the capability to destroy a country; people who are capable of destroying five populated planets don’t exist outside of science fiction.  But people you have to walk on eggshells around because if you say something they don’t like, they’ll attack you? You already know someone like that, whoever and wherever you are.  Such people are a real world terror (even if they are like that because they are abuse victims themselves, you’re probably not going to think about that in every torturous encounter with them.)

If you identify with Kylo’s victims, which a lot of people can’t help but do, he’s terrifying.  Hux, himself, isn’t that scary.  His violence is rhetorical, not physical  He doesn’t just kill five planets worth of people; he builds a weapon that kills five planets worth of people with the FO’s funding and implements it when Supreme Leader Snoke gives the okay. And, as [profile] esmethesciencewitch, pointed out, how do we empathize with Hux’s victims? Who are they? I’m not trying to suggest that because they don’t have names (or faces) that they don’t matter, but rather that our hatred of Hux can’t come from identification with his victims.

What people find terrifying about Kylo is his personality.  Destroying five planets isn’t a personalty trait; it’s a single action, and Hux does nothing that even approaches it in the final two movies. If emotionally volatile violent bully is Kylo’s personality, maybe conniving bureaucrat is Hux’s.  (Yes, they’re both much more than that, but I’m talking about what audiences have against them.) I’m just trying to image what audience these characters are being written for that the writers are so confident that they’ll find the bureaucrat more despicable than the bully

Hux: Exchanges an in-joke with a female colleague. Doesn’t react when an inferior officer (Peavy) gets snarky with him. Mentions in his triumphant speech that Starkiller Base is built by the labour of many. Interacts reasonably with his peers. Visibly braces himself, but still tries to give useful advice to a volatile superior, despite reasonably fearing for his own safety.

I’m sorry, but for me that adds up to someone who could be worked with, and who is not an imminent threat to my safety.

Kylo: Throttles an inferior officer (Mitaka) for giving him a report. Tears up his own spaceship in a fit of rage. Throws the girl he likes into a tree. Tortures two people. Knocks out an inferior officer for giving him advice that would have prevented him from suffering a humiliating defeat. Did whatever it took to cow Hux into silence - a feat not even Snoke managed. (Seriously, watching Hux shut up at a raised finger chilled my blood.)

And to me that adds up to someone who will hurt me. If you can’t say reasonable things to a person without being thrown into a wall, you can’t have a non-abusive relationship with that person at all.

So yeah, from my pov, there’s no contest. One is scary and one is to be pitied (despite being a terrible person.)

OTOH, if I’m thinking about what the film makers expected from the audience, then I remember the existance of toxic masculinity and patriarchy and all that jazz. Toxic masculinity says that a man who is angry is powerful, and a man who is physically strong, invulnerable and powerful must also be attractive. Whereas a man who is unable to defend himself is contemptable. A man who attempts to avoid being hurt by complying with his terrorizer’s demands is a coward - and therefore deserves to be hurt.

Hux is a BAD MAN and therefore he deserves to be hurt, and therefore it doesn’t really matter that Kylo bullies him. In fact it just shows that Kylo is a REAL MAN and Hux is not. Kylo can be as abusive as he likes to the rest of the First Order because they are all bad people and they deserve it. It doesn’t mean that Kylo would be like that with someone he loved! Oh no, of course not! These abusive characteristics are just signs that he’s an alpha male and therefore acceptably masculine and desirable.

Bleh.

My issue is not and has never been with adoption. My issue is with, as I have said many, many times, the purity narrative the story itself sets up by attempting to do two things at once: by making the narrative itself about the sins passed down by Anakin Skywalker through his children and grandchildren, who inherit the consequences of his sins through no choice of their own but literally because they happen to be born related to him, then making the villain’s origin story in the ST about his relationship with his grandfather whose sins he inherited, again, because of the galaxy’s and his family’s unresolved trauma towards him. The villain of the ST is the villain because of trauma he inherited in his family. The entire family then dies as a consequence of this drama, which is set up as drama tied to their bloodline because they were targeted for three generations by an abuser because of said bloodline, and then they die for that bloodline, this inherited trauma they had nothing to do with choosing, and this trauma is never resolved. And then another girl comes in, and suddenly this is about choosing family.

This is not a consistent theme. The writers need to pick one. If this was all about the triumph of overcoming bloodlines and choosing your own family then you need to make a story where this is the case, and not literally hinge every sin a family makes on the trauma of being descended from the Chosen One and his misdeeds.

What about Leia Organa? Leia Organa was adopted by two loving parents, and always identified them as her parents above everything. She is not safe from this writing decision either. Her relationship with Bail and Breha is totally erased, and never mentioned or deemed important, at the expense of making her “a Skywalker” so that she and Luke can “be Skywalkers” together to force a totally emotionally false ending. Leia was just as fucked over by this decision. What about Beru and Owen who took Luke in when he was a baby and raised him as their own? They get absolutely no mention either, because the movie is busy idolizing a name over any of the people involved– in fact, at the expense of the suffering of all the people involved.

There is nothing wrong with adoption. There is everything wrong with the way the narrative tries to have it both ways, by both making the Skywalkers sacrificial lambs for a family curse they inherited without their consent and which they indeed all die for thus proving the curse correct, and then suddenly at the end switching gears entirely and making the Skywalker name something totally untied to any of this suffering. We realize that of all the Skywalker family, only three of them even have the last name at all, including Leia, who never once in the ST mentions her adopted parents or coming to peace with her biological father or anything, but suddenly at the end she and Luke are “the Skywalkers”? Why is it the Skywalker name we’re choosing, and not Solo, Organa, Amidala, or Naberrie? Make no mistake that this choice had everything to do with out-of-universe reasons and nothing to do with a decision that is coherent for the emotions of the characters involved in the universe.

You cannot both make a narrative which places huge emphasis on the way a family falls because of a sin it inherited from its founder which has passed along through the line, then kill all these characters off proving this completely true, and then also try to have a narrative where found family is everything and inherited trauma is not a thing. They very much made it a Thing, and then by ignoring how that is a thing, a concept which should by itself be good, found family, adoption, all that, ends up with terrible, terrible, implications of purity and child replacement.

My issue is with the writers having no concept of the implications of their attempt to have their cake and eat it too.

omg his eyes!

This should have been such an obvious tip-off.  No smile, barely any detectible emotion at all, but once you know what’s going on you can just see him looking around in that last gif and remembering the last time he was there.

(Which is particularly impressive, considering the fire hadn’t yet been shot at the time this scene was filmed.)

It makes him touching the stack of books meaningful, too (second GIF). We wouldn’t think twice about Aziraphale touching his own books, but Crowley? Anthony J’Im-Not-A-Book-Person Crowley?

It’s not quite a loving/affectionate touch, but he’s still making sure it’s real. Sort of grounding himself. This is Aziraphale’s home, but Crowley’s too, by extension - a place he’s comfortable, at ease, a place he can be himself.

He’s also very clearly scanning for threats. Something Aziraphale rarely if ever thinks to do, but for Crowley it’s second nature. It’s why he stands still with only his eyes moving, checking for surprises, ambush points, signs of intrusion. It’s actually one of the few times we see Crowley deadly serious: neither goofing off, nor lovestruck, panicking or otherwise being tangled up in his emotions. This is Crowley in hardcore Evil-doesn’t-sleep watch-your-back-at-all-times Hell-trained-me-well trust-no-one survival mode. And Michael Sheen REALLY nails it.

slightly click-baity title but i’m getting really tired of ‘zero-waste’ shops and bloggers which advocate buying le parfait/mason/fancy new glass jars for storing your organic flour, couscous, oats, etc.

those jars are fucking expensive (i don’t care if it’s a ‘one-off investment’ they are overpriced and not everyone can afford to invest in your bougie jars)

it sort of defeats the object of reducing your waste if you immediately go out and buy a whole set of brand new virgin glass jars to store stuff in. there is loads of glass packaging already in the world. USE IT.

to replace this middle-class bullshit (this is zero-waste for the aesthetic first if ever i saw it) is simple and way cheaper:

go through your cupboards and find all your jams/pasta sauces/assorted nut butters.  use them (or chuck them out if they’re all old, no point hoarding ancient food), then wash very thoroughly and dry them (i’d recommend putting all your (glass only!) jars on a tray in the oven to dry as this will sterilise them too). then congratulations! you have a bunch of free reused jars to fill with rice/oats/organic chia and flaxseed muesli at the zero waste shop!

go on ebay/your local bring and buy facebook page/a charity shop and find ‘job lot glass jars’/’old jam jars’/similar. then rinse and repeat as before (literally). congratulations! you have sourced reused jars for a minimal cost to fill with your choice of obscure grains! (and potentially supported a fellow member of the proletariat trying to make a little extra money/a charity in the process!)

zero-waste shouldn’t be the new trend for the middle classes. it should be accessible to everyone because it matters.

a final point! whilst our individual actions can (and do) have a massive impact on the planet, and we should all make what changes we can to protect the environment, this means nothing so long as massive corporations are polluting water sources, destroying rainforests, dumping toxic chemicals in the oceans, exploiting poor migrant workers, and every other filthy trick they pull because they think they can. we need to hold these despicable companies (and the governments which enable them) to account! sign petitions, protest, boycott! do not allow them to get away with this!

Azula

It constantly upsets me whenever I see people say that Azula doesn’t deserve any sympathy, that she was a monster, she deserved what was coming for her, she abused people (she never did), a playing victim, doesn’t deserve any redemption arc etc…

And so, i’ve decided to write this so people can understand her character better.

In the comics, it became clear that Azula’s accusation of their mother (Ursa) liking loving Zuko more than her, was indeed true. Never once did we see Ursa actually alone with Azula unless she was reprimanding her. Ursa was always just with Zuko. It was only once did we see Ursa actually with Azula (albeit Zuko was there too), and even then Ursa was neglecting Azula and just paying her full attention to Zuko. You can say Ursa loved Azula, sure, but the fact is that Azula never felt she was loved by her mother. Why would she? Ursa never praised her when she actually did something praiseworthy, or even when she behaved better than Zuko.

A child, especially a child as perceptive as Azula was, could’ve only reached the conclusion that she was never loved if there wasn’t any evidence to prove her wrong. Compare Ursa’s goodbye between her children. She kisses them both, but she only wakes up Zuko to tell him she loves him. For Azula, she has no knowledge of Ursa even coming to her room.

Now for Ozai. According to Zuko, Ozai favored Azula over him because she was a prodigy, which was true, but notice how even in flashbacks or in the comics, Ozai was not seen spending time with Azula like how Ursa was with Zuko. Ozai only favored Azula for her talent, and that was it. As a child, Azula only received praise from her father when she did something praiseworthy and her ideals matched his. Was Ozai truly spending time with his daughter? No. Did he truly love her? No.

In contrast to Ozai’s treatment of Azula, Ursa’s was the complete opposite. Ursa only paid attention to Azula when she did something wrong. To Azula, it was better to be scolded than to be ignored so she did bad things.

People always fail to remember that Azula never had any guidance, unlike Zuko. Ursa was always with Zuko. When she’d reprimand Azula for her actions, she’d never tell her why they were wrong and only send her away. Azula actually questions her mother as to why she couldn’t do what she did, but Ursa only tells her that she should treat the flowers with respect. Ursa NEVER explained to Azula what was wrong with what she was doing.

Notice the difference in how Ursa treated her children when they misbehaved. Ursa’s first thought for Zuko is to understand her son’s reasoning behind his actions while for Azula, her first thought was to only scold her.

Again in this scene, Azula was just asking a simple question but yet again, Ursa scolds her for it and doesn’t tell her why it was rude. Azula only understood why it was inappropriate when Zuko interjects and gives her an example. ‘Fine but I still think Dad’s better’ is basically her response to Zuko. Ursa never tried to get Azula to understand why her questions were inappropriate.

Even Iroh was playing favorites with them. It’s obvious that Iroh didn’t even know Azula enough to know that she wasn’t the usual doll loving girl since he gifted her a doll while he gifted Zuko a dagger. Take note that Azula was merely 11 years old when she was left completely alone with Ozai for the next 3 years.

Azula grew up in a militaristic environment surrounded with only her servants and cruel war aged old men. Her friends were rarely there since Ty Lee had run off to the circus and Mai probably didn’t even come to the palace that much either since she was closer to Ty Lee.

Azula was completely left alone with Ozai. She was forced to mature and have the mindset of an adult at 11, to forgo her childhood innocence and anything else that may prove to be a weakness in the future. Ozai made sure of that.

So growing up, Azula basically didn’t have a mother, father, grandfather or an uncle. There was literally no one to guide her to the light unlike Zuko.

As Azula grew older, Ozai’s expectations of her only grew higher. That was how Azula’s obsession with perfection began.

‘Almost isn’t good enough!’

Azula needed to be only perfect. Anything lesser than that was not appreciated by Ozai. Since Zuko was a failure to Ozai, that only meant that he was harsher in perfecting Azula to be the heir he desired. Since Azula was capable of incredible feats as a child, that means his expectations of her was even higher than his was for Zuko. Azula was expected to not only just excel, but to be the finest of all firebenders (second only to him of course).

‘My father gave me far more leeway than he ever gave Zuko, but he is not a patient man.’

‘This scheme is indeed my master stroke, destined to place me in Father’s good graces forever.’

- Azula (Tale of Azula)

From this we can deduce that Azula was not always actually in Ozai’s good graces, unlike what Zuko thought. Azula knows the consequences of disappointing and disobeying her father from watching Zuko, and she knows that even she herself isn’t exempted from her father’s cruelty.

The higher you climb, the harder you fall— this quote perfectly describes Azula demise. Azula was known as a prodigy even as a child so only perfection and brilliance was expected of her. Failure was considered improbable. No one expects her to fail, so if she does, her punishment is twice as worse as it should be.

Take note, Azula actually loved Ozai. He was the only parent who praised her, who understood her worth, who agreed with her ideals even when she was just a child. Ozai approved of Azula. Azula had seen his approval as Love, which was why Azula never betrayed her father and did everything he commanded her to. To Azula, Ozai was the only person who truly loved her and didn’t actually fear her. She wasn’t going to lose that one and only person who loved her.

Azula was afraid. She was actually afraid of what her father might do to her for speaking out against him. She knows from Zuko’s experience of what Ozai was capable of. Her brother had spoken out of turn in the war meeting, disregarding Ozai’s opinion in the plan of General Bujing, which then resulted in the Agni Kai between father and son. Ozai had struck Zuko with lightning when Zuko showed defiance and disrespect.

Azula knew she wasn’t an exception, and it was her instincts of self-preservation that prevented her from comitting the same mistakes that Zuko did. Zuko was the prime example of what she would be if she wasn’t what her father desired. She became what she was so she could survive.

Azula was every bit a victim as Zuko was, and probably even more.

Also stop using the “it was a different time” bullshit. I’m sure minority groups were complaining about the sexist/racist/homophobic shit back then too. The only difference is they weren’t given the right to speak as loudly as we are now.

singing-not-sleeping-beauty:

I think we need to apply this to older movies as well:

The homophobic gag in that rom com,

the racist side character in that coming of age story,

don’t just brush it of as a product of the time, acknowledge that it was bad then and remains a terrible aspect of the film today

Not sure if this is official or not, but I heard there was a leaked script where Kylo Ren appoints Hux as chancellor and my brain is going wild.

Solarpunk Action Week: Spring 2020!

(Eventually you people are going to learn to stop encouraging me to do stuff)

Since the main organizer of the previous festivities has migrated to Mastodon pretty much exclusively, ya’girl is gonna go ahead and get started on the Tumblr side of 2020′s Solarpunk Action Week.  Mark your calendars for March 8th thru 14th!

“But Lyudmila,” you say, “why in the entire hell are you talking about March in November?” – Well, it’s never too early start learning and planning.

What is Solarpunk?

Solarpunk is a movement in speculative fiction, art, fashion and activism that seeks to answer and embody the question “what does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?” The aesthetics of solarpunk merge the practical with the beautiful, the well-designed with the green and wild, the bright and colorful with the earthy and solid. Solarpunk can be utopian, just optimistic, or concerned with the struggles en route to a better world — but never dystopian. As our world roils with calamity, we need solutions, not warnings. Solutions to live comfortably without fossil fuels, to equitably manage scarcity and share abundance, to be kinder to each other and to the planet we share. At once a vision of the future, a thoughtful provocation, and an achievable lifestyle.”

And what is Solarpunk Action Week?

Solarpunk Action Week is a week dedicated to taking and spreading actions–complex or simple, big or small–to build our communities, practice our skills, and make the world just a little bit better. Make a Tumblr post about whatever action(s) you take and tag me in or use the #SolarpunkActionWeek tag, and I’ll reblog them here and archive them over on [profile] the_last_girl_scout.  No doubt many other blogs will be doing likewise!

What can I do?

Oh, so many things!  No, really, one of the reasons I’m making this post so far in advance is that the sheer number of possibilities can be pretty overwhelming.  What you do is up to you! but for instructions and inspiration, you should check out the Sunbeam City wiki, and I’ve spent the past year archiving how-to and educational posts over on [profile] the_last_girl_scout (check out the #solarpunk [obvs], #gardening, #diy, #organizing, and #afa tags specifically), and you should also go ahead and follow the laundry list of blogs I’m gonna @ at the bottom of this post b/c they are all very good, and make sure and check the notes for anyone/anything I may have forgotten!

You could start a garden, flyer/sticker your neighborhood, share food w/ your pals and the neighborhood, do some self-education, learn how to make something instead of buying it, overthrow capitalism … the possibilities are endless!

Get out there and invent the future, space cadets.

Let’s get involved with this as a group!

Ideas? 🙏😊

I hope everybody’s horny for Solarpunk Action Week because I know I am

Also btw the way the original [profile] solarpunkactionweek blog is still doing its thing so you can go follow that as well

It’s True!

*Whips out organizer* Got this on my calendar now! Can’t wait to do this again!

Oh this is a grand idea!

Is everybody pumped? I sure am!

I managed to get my entire ass IWW branch in on this. It’s gonna be sick.

….it’s too early to plant outdoors here (and I’m starting my seedlings tomorrow) but I think that week I’ll order my pollinator seeds & start getting the planters ready.  The Husband is getting drafted the week before to help me tear seven hells out of the shitty garden bed in the front yard and the jungle in the back – we have to, guys, I hate to do it but we have to – and he can help me figure out bird baths that week.

Goddamn it I have been in this house six years, it’s time to make the yards mine.  Whether the neighbors like it or not.

Oh, that’s perfect!!!

Me and a friend are gonna do some guerilla gardening in town and maybe some moss graffiti. Trying to get my LGBTQ+ hangout aboard, too.

As a part of that very LGBTQ+ hangout I think that’s a wonderful idea and would love to try and squeeze that into my calendar.

so I’ve stumbled upon a friend group of mostly fellow queer people interested in anarchy and this may be fun. Didn’t think I’d be able to participate while in college and with $0 budget but here we are

I… am gonna sew things. its lowkey but its making things i would otherwise buy and therefore overthrowing capitalism

Sewing things is an awesome way to do a solarpunk and i can’t wait to hear all about it

Sewing counts??? I have some jeans I just busted the ass out of which means SCRAP DENIM so count me in

Hell yeah fremd you go buck wild on that scrap denim

Still too cold to plant out, so I’m going to try to make a tiny pond in my garden, to try to encourage more biodiversity. Will go to the local tip to see if I can find a sink or something to repurpose.

The Journal of Armitage Hux-Dameron Vol. II - Entry 80

My muse for designing energy-efficient weapons of large-scale interplanetary destruction has faded. I do not know whether it is because I am fatigued caring for Kaleb (even Poe seems a little less enthused about jumping in an X-Wing and blowing something up due to the toil of caring for our sweet little death star). I’d like to think that’s the case, but I cannot deny my feelings of disheartenment. I can no longer say with confidence that my designs shall be put to good use. Either they shall be used by Ren to hunt ghosts or by Palpatine for… who can say what - the old emperor does not seem to have any coherent goals for the Order.

All I can do for now is endure another restless night and wonder whether my inspiration will return in the morning. I’d say I hope it returns, but hope is a figment of Rebel Scum fantasies.

Update: Poe says to stop calling our son “our sweet little death star”. Apparently, I have no sense of what is “cute” and what is “creepy”.
