This is merely a hypothetical. Obviously this would never happen to me in reality. The sudden mass execution of several radar technicians in 33 ABY has nothing to do with it; they all just happened to be spies. That’s why I always say: Never trust a radar technician.

I had a dream the night before the My Chemical Romance reunion concert that I was at said reunion concert, except it was just Kylo Ren with a ukulele in a tent, playing songs that weren’t even MCR, but everyone seemed convinced this was definitely the reunion concert. Aside from wondering once or twice where the rest of the band members were, I went along with it.

I love how this implies that Kylo Ren is a member of MCR

The real reason the Knights of Ren wear masks is so the MCR fans won’t recognize them.

Silencer and Ernest see each other in a walk and, well, fall for each other. With their owners being part of the process. microcosmicobservations:

Whenever I speak affectionately on why I love and am so enchanted by lichen, I mention how fascinating it is that it’s a composite organism, something you hesitate to call a single species because it is actually made up of several species from different kingdoms.

Today in one of the Facebook groups I’m a part of, someone shared the work of a biologist, Dr. Scott Gilbert, who has written about how the idea of the “biological individual” is a myth which overly simplifies research on not only evolutionary biology but also immunology, anatomy, physiology, etc. In his 2012 paper “The Symbiotic View of Life: We Have Never Been Individuals,” he aims to show that “animals cannot be considered individuals by anatomical, or physiological criteria, because a diversity of symbionts are both present and functional in completing metabolic pathways and serving other physiological functions. Similarly, these new studies have shown that animal development is incomplete without symbionts.”

Maybe this isn’t as mind-blowing to people who are more involved with animal-focused research, but as someone with a botanical/mycological background I am very much enjoying thinking about this and its implications. I, like lichen, am not a single species but a collection of organisms symbiotically existing as part of the same whole. I am not an individual but rather an ecosystem.

how would it change us, as a culture, if we stop thinking ourselves as individuals, and start thinking of ourselves as ecosystems nested in ecosystems?

So I had the strangest dream this weekend and nobody understands me so I need to share it with you because you might. Press J to skip this post if you can’t deal, I will accept this.

In my dream I was standing on the back deck of a rural cabin that overlooked a beautiful Vermont/Scottish Highlands landscape of unspoiled wilderness. It was a crisp, perfect autumn morning. I held a cup of cooling coffee in my hands as I leaned against the railing and scanned the perfect rolling hills in the midground, behind which the great patterned mountains with their snowcaps marched on until they blended with the horizon: #aesthetic

As I gazed at a distant meadow clearing in the trees, a pair of brightly coloured humanoid creatures emerged from the woods and began to dance for each other. It was an esoteric, beautiful mating dance, a strange combination of instinct and choreography. I felt awe washing over me. I marvelled. I felt a deep sense of wonder and peace as I observed this vanishingly rare encounter that I had never thought to observe in person. These animals were instantly recognisable but had never been studied in the wild. I felt incredibly humbled and privileged to witness this behaviour - I knew that I was the first human witness to observe this behaviour - and I reached for my phone, wondering if I should film it, so it could join the scholarly record, where it NEEDED to be. This could change everything. But then I held back - something told me “no,” to let the creatures have their privacy.

Ok, I can’t go any further without telling you that they were Teletubbies.

A red one and a yellow one. I know. I know. Stay with me here.

The cryptids melted back into the woods. My subconscious drew a discreet veil over the rest of their mating ritual, but I knew instinctively that this had been a dance of courtship. I was busy pondering the implications, because they were critical. You see, although the creatures were instantly recognisable as Teletubbies, as I had studied them, even at a distance, I had an incredible realisation.

They were adult Teletubbies.

This realisation dawned on me and in my dream I understood it fully. The ones that we know of - the captive ones that we have seen on television - are juveniles. In fact, they are the equivalent of toddlers. When you see the adults this becomes obvious. The garbled speech and silly movements of the four captive Teletubbies we know are the babbles of babyhood, a private primal toddler-language brewed up between sentient beings who have never encountered an adult of their own kind.

The adult Teletubbies have more branching, complex antlers and shaggy coats. They are less brightly coloured. They are terrifyingly large. Their strangely human faces, emerging from the thick fur, are unquestionably adult; remote, serene, reproachful. Their television screens are glitchy, esoteric and unknowable. They are cryptids whose public exploitation has undermined their rarity and their strange, alien dignity.

In my dream my feelings of awe and peace turned to great sadness at the fate of the captive toddler Teletubbies. I realised that I had to be the scientist who brought this discovery to the world and raised awareness of their plight. And I also questioned: are Teletubbies like axolotls? Do they exhibit neoteny? (Axolotls, the cute aquarium pets with flaring gills, are actually juveniles of an amphibious species - if given the right conditions they’ll grow up into land-dwelling black newts. But they can breed in their aquatic juvenile form, and most spend their whole lives in this form. Deprived of their wild potential, will the Teletubbies ever mature? Or are they merely experiencing a long childhood, natural for a species that is unimaginably long-lived?)

So in my dream my husband came out onto the back deck and I began to share these discoveries with him and before I could even bring up the axolotls he just said “what the fucking fuck” and went away again.

I woke up disgruntled and unable to capture the feeling of peace and sadness. I then tried to explain this to my husband in the waking world, and he said “what the fucking fuck” and walked away before I even got to the explanation of the Teletubbies being toddlers, which just goes to show that you never know someone as well as you think you do.

Anyway I’m sure you guys will join me in this knowledge. And also I’ve googled it and apparently the Teletubbies reboot features infant Teletubbies, so clearly they are getting more from somewhere and the time to question this is NOW

I have a personal theory that how a dream makes you feel is more meaningful than the content.

What I got from your dream was a sense of wonder and privilege (the good kind), followed by the need to bear witness and advocate for the cryptids. Topped off with a disturbingly accurate example of the attitudes you’d face.

(staring nobly into the distance) yes. yes, you understand. you understand.

I’m so sorry but this is what came to mind and so this is what I drew

Holy

Thank you so much for sharing that dream, it was EXACTLY what I needed to stop feeling like shit. Now I, too, am honored by the knowledge of adult teletubbies.

Here’s my take on this lovely cryptid.

WHOA I’m sorry I missed this. this is magnificent. the feet and hands are really spooky. it definitely fills me with the Fear.

So I spent the last few hours drawing and animating this and I cannot believe I did so enjoy I’m gonna pass out and probably deal with similar dreams now

Yes, this is definitely the Fear.

ayo here’s my two cents :D Thanks for the inspo, friendo

idk how old this flippin is but I was like HEY BEAR CUB BABIES and as they get older they’re some mixture of moose, grizzley and megatherium (giant, ancient sloth).

A dirty secret: you can only be a writer if you can afford it:

teawitch:

mercedeslackeyblog:

This. So much this.

I’ve been saying this on Ouora for three years. If you want to be a writer it’s hard and you have to money coming in from someplace else.

This.

When I was going to writers conventions and particularly romance writers conventions, I was surprised to discover how many writers were middle-aged women with husbands who were doctors or lawyers. They were able to write because they had the time and space to do so.

I know writers who write full time. It’s often not the career we imagined when we were studying writing. Because it really isn’t writing full time. It’s running a full-time small business promoting, marketing, editing and handling financial arrangements for an author while trying to be a writer. It’s just that your both of those people.

Which doesn’t mean don’t writer. It just means that having a day job doesn’t make you a failure as a writer. Especially when you are a self-supporting writer.

Okay, but considering Crowley canonically orders food that he doesn’t eat, and that Aziraphale then helps himself to… this is essentially already canon, yes?

kedreeva:

May I offer you tidbitting? The bowerbirds travel all over to build elaborate bowers, often in colors they like (blue like above is often seen) which is great but it’s very nest-building adjacent. however….

chickens tidbit

When a rooster (at least a rooster worth anything) finds a Very Good Food, instead of eating it himself, he picks it up and sets it down and makes noises to call the hen over so she can have it. When he is around the same girls long enough, he will even learn which things they like and which things they will ignore, and will eat the things they ignore and only offer them the best of the best.

Here’s a good video of the behavior:

wheeloffortune-design:

fanfics writing Crowley courting like a bird: wing preening, nesting

what Crowley would actually do if he courted like a bird:

I believe I must have been unclear: I was saying that he’s been acting like a bird already, he’s been courting Aziraphale like a rooster for a long time in canon.

Roosters also:

Have a terrible mating dance that’s basically a weird shuffle with one wing dropped, it’s one of the worst attempts at dancing birds have ever made

Do a lot of very dramatic yelling, particularly at things they cannot control or change, like the sun rising

Will circle around the hens while they are free ranging both to keep an eye out for predators and to be between the predator and their hens

If they can’t get their hens away to safety first and it comes down to a fight, they will 100% (again, if they are good roosters behaving as a rooster should) be the first bird down in a predator attack because they won’t be running; they’ll be fighting to give their hens a chance to get away

As a side note, this is actually a very Important and deeply treasured behavior by anyone that keeps chickens- as terrible as it is to lose a rooster to a predator, the ones that put up a good fight going down first usually make the predator think twice about taking anyone else. If a predator thinks they’re going to have to go through that again to take another bird, they will usually reconsider, which can mean the difference between losing a rooster and losing an entire flock… see also: body swap and both their behaviors trying to scare the other side off from the other

While they don’t (usually) sit on eggs like the moms, a good rooster may scout out good places to have a nest, and may even make the scrape for the hen if he thinks it’s an especially good place to nest (south downs anyone?)

I see a lot of people who tell young people–especially young people who are heading into college–that they should “do what they love.” And they’re right. You should do what you love.

But there’s a world of difference between doing what you love for you, and doing what you love for a paycheck.

I went to undergrad for graphic design and 3-D design–art and more art, I usually say–and I loved it. You know what I didn’t love? Trying to collect my fees from clients. Trying to meet unrealistic, over-simplified or over-specific briefs from people who didn’t know what they were talking about. Coming home, having worked creatively all day, with no creative juice left for the things I wanted to do.

You know what I would tell you instead? Do something that you can be interested in, with people you like.

You don’t have to love it. Loving your work can be a lot, and it often means you have to live in your job 24/7. Some people can do that. Not everyone can, or should.  But if you can find work that’s interesting enough that it doesn’t feel tedious, and people you can enjoy spending your 9-5 with, and you can make money, that’s great! It means you can do the things you love for you.

I’m in law school now. It’s interesting work, and difficult, and I like doing it. I like how complicated it gets, and I like the stories it tells. But I don’t come home and read law journals for fun. I come home, and I sculpt, and I draw, and I paint, and I read. I do these things for me.

And I love it.

Gods I wish I’d had this ten years ago when everyone was pushing for me to do art for a living. Probably wouldn’t have burned out as hard as I did

Yup, I tried to do writing for a living. Not only did I not make minumum wage, I also ended up hating to write. Still getting over that mistake.

TIL that there are four stages to learning a new skill: unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and unconscious competence.

via ift.tt

“Sometimes, when you practice a skill that you’re trying to improve, you might feel like you’re actually getting worse over time, instead of better. A common reason why this happens is that you’ve advanced from the first stage of learning, unconscious incompetence, to the second stage, conscious incompetence.

This means that you might start feeling like you’re suddenly making a lot of mistakes. In reality, however, you were likely already making those same mistakes beforehand. The difference is that you’re now good enough to actually realize when you’re making those mistakes, whereas earlier you simply didn’t have the necessary proficiency which is required in order to be able to notice it.”

You’re getting better, I promise! Keep it up! 💖

Note: I originally had another half-written post delving into this topic. Then Tumblr went, “LOL! Fuck you!” and ate it. This is my second attempt.

As a fan of many characters deemed villains in their respective stories, redemption arcs are often a topic of discussion. Does this or that character deserve redemption? What makes for a satisfying redemption arc? Which redemption arcs work or don’t work?

However, it’s rare for me to come across a conversation that examines the concept of a redemption arc itself, let alone the forces that shape our understanding of what redemption means and how it works.

With that in mind, I’m going to see what I can do to crack open the assumptions behind redemption narratives and see what interesting alternatives present themselves.

It’s Shabbat, so I shouldn’t be writing anything, but I figure since I’m writing about Jewish stuff, it counts as Torah study.

I wanna come back to this because I’ve been thinking about it off and on, and I want to elaborate on some things that I hinted at before.

I came across a post on Tumblr or reddit that said that Azula doesn’t deserve a redemption arc because she hasn’t suffered enough. When I read that, I felt a sudden revulsion toward the post and the person who made it. It was like someone showed me a graphic picture of something disgusting.

Now that I think about it, the revulsion I felt was a deeply Jewish revulsion toward the idea of redemptive suffering. I’ve written before about Jewish tradition rejecting the notion of redemptive suffering. We have a whole book in the Tanakh about the effect that suffering has on a person’s character. Sure, some people rise above their suffering even better than before, but some people get worse.  We don’t put a lot of stock in the idea that the best way to get a person to evolve morally is to afflict them with pain and misery.

Furthermore, what if a person’s wrongdoing is rooted in pain and suffering? What good would adding more pain and suffering do? How does that repair the damage they’ve done? How does that heal the hurt they’ve caused? How does that bring more good to the world?

This is literally the futuristic version of washboard music. Is that not just fucking amazing? We had dudes playing washboards to accompany music since the early days of blues and zydeco and today we’re sitting here watching someone using a washing machine in the exact same way. Imagine being some old fella playing a washboard with thimbles in a little jug-and-tea-chest outfit back in the 20s, imagine if someone told you that in about 100 years time, some kid would be using a machine that will replace the washboard to serve the exact same purpose.

One of the people who got an advance copy of the TROS Novelization spoke about it in more detail in the latest episode of the Unknown Regions podcast. Here’s a summary of the relevant bits (though I advise you to listen to the entire thing):

WARNING: SPOILERS

Palpatine is a clone — this plan was already in motion before he died because he had sensed the flicker of light in Vader. There were several clones made in an attempt to create one capable of holding his power, but ultimately failed. Rey’s father is also one of these clones (but Rey herself was conceived naturally)

Palpatine’s body was dying, he didn’t have very long left, and that’s why he had to fast-track his plan and asked Ben to kill Rey

Ben is a super nerd: confirmed

The Dyad is the most powerful thing in the universe — the rule of two and even the master jedi/padawan relationship is a weaker, paler version of a dyad.

The book opens with Rey training with Leia and Leia thinking about how she’s not going to make the same mistakes with Rey that she made with Ben — she won’t fear her darkness, won’t send her away etc

The reason why the helmet is back is because Ben summons the Knights of Ren and in order to ‘hang’ with them he needs his helmet. It’s a requirement. So he scavenges the pieces and has a Sith alchemist put it back together.

There are two scenes with Ben and Chewie — one of them is the interrogation scene where Ben rummages through his mind to find out where Rey is and Chewie hits back with all these memories of Han and Leia and baby Ben (teaching him how to fly a speeder, target practice, really painful stuff 🥺)

It is implied that Rey mind-tricked Finn on Pasaana to stop him from going after her when she goes out to meet Ben in the desert

Rey was already building her own saber by the start of the book and the whole “I will earn your brother’s saber” thing is contextualized in the sense that she knows the saber means a lot to Leia and she gives it back at the end of each training session

Leia’s health is deteriorating rapidly. Throughout the book, she hears Luke tell her through the Force that it is almost time for her to go. Her reaching out to Ben on the Death Star is her last attempt — her last hope — to bring her son back and she knows it will kill her. She knows her legacy will live on — the Organa legacy with Poe, the Skywalker legacy with Rey and she wants the Solo legacy to live on through Ben (this just makes his death all the more pointless and cruel imo)

There is a definite romantic Reylo undertone throughout the entire book. At one point, Rey has some h*rny thots when Ben says her name aloud

There are two different “but I do” moments of Ben telling Rey nobody understands her, but he does

Rey learned Force healing when she healed Luke’s kyber crystal. It is said that in order to heal somebody or something you need to give part of your own life force. When she healed Ben, she was ready to give her whole self just to bring him back. She would have died for him then and there. It takes a lot out of her.

This is the turning point for Ben and what sparks his turn because he realizes that Leia, Han and Luke sacrificed themselves for him and Rey was ready to do the same.

I’ve pre-ordered the book just so that I’ll be able to see if it makes any more sense, or gives more of a sense of completion and significance than the movie. But I’m not really looking forward to reading it. I know I quite enjoyed the movie, but I was aware that I did that mainly by accepting that it wasn’t going to make a lot of sense. And the further I get from the movie the more I realizehow little of it was either satisfying or coherent.

I hate the dyad thing too, if only because it made the pair of them so superpowered that they could walk through everything like it was a video game, respawning where necessary and never being seriously inconvenienced by anything. It was also very ‘oh, the power of heterosexual love is the greatest force in the universe.’ Which is very Disney but not very SW.

And yeah, the more I think about it, the more I realize that it doesn’t add anything to the end of the OT, it just takes away from it. they had their happy ending and they destroyed it without building a better one in return.

Anyway, I’ll read the book for you and let you know if there’s anything worthwhile in it so you don’t have to :)

The mission will be easy, you said. But nothing about a Star Destroyer is easy.
