hope-for-the-planet:
Piet Abik is a 70 year old climate activist from Borneo, Indonesia. He works in conjunction with one of Ecosia’s tree planting initiatives to plant trees and stop deforesation by fighting the palm oil industry.
Piet helps convince farmers to plant a variety of productive trees on their land, rather than creating monocultures of palm oil trees which will eventually deplete the soil. At present, he has convinced around 2,000 farmers to join his program and the idea is spreading to surrounding communities.
This is a great example of a conservation program that works with local communities instead of against them, by allowing people to still make a living without destroying the forest.
