You know what’s one of the worst things about TROS deciding last minute to change Poe’s backstory into having a history of spice running, other then all the super obvious to anyone (Abrams) racist crap associated with it? On a story level, with what’s been established about the world and Poe’s place in it, abilities like hotwiring a speeder and knowing how to light-speed jump are two skills I would almost automatically accept he would have because he’s in the Goddamn Resistance against tyrannical genocidal maniacs that can destroy entire planets, and it’s been explicitly stated he’s had formal training as a pilot in the New Republic Navy. Lockpicking and hotwiring are two skills I would personal hold up to be very important for any member of the Resistance to have, especially those members I’m sending out on dangerous missions where they may have to make sudden and spontaneous escapes from, and the idea of light-speed jumping is something I would totally believe the Navy would teach their pilots as a ‘last resort’ maneuver if their in a life-or-death situation. There’s solid explanations for both of these that don’t need to relate to spice running at all.
But also, the simple fact that if it had been Rey performing these acts, not a single character would have said a damn thing about it, or called it ‘shifty behavior’, and we all damn well know why.
Look, it’s been two years and I’m still not entirely over the fact that a former guerilla would have taught his son how to sew. It’s a survival skill.
