I’m assuming Hux was being extremely reserved, polite, and accommodating with Pryde to protect himself and his identity as The Spy™ but reading about Pryde considering his behaviour as ingratiating still gets me. It’s just another reminder that he’s spent at least thirty years of his life in a culture that not only rewards cutthroat, violent behaviour, but actively discourages anything even resembling kindness and consideration amongst colleagues.
Discounting TFA Hux, who feels like a different character, poor Hux’s fight or flight response seems to be fawn. Which is like… he’s just very eager to please, and nobody in his life seems to be willing to be pleased. It’s sad, and it makes me think that as a child he must have been quite sweet natured. Things could have been very different if anyone had ever been nice to him
