Hey here’s a real gentle reminder: If you want to be a good ally to an oppressed group? Don’t forget to love, listen to, and support them, instead of only putting your energy into attacking their oppressors. The latter is great, yes, but never forget the former. Showing negativity to your enemies is something we see all the time, but there’s rarely enough positivity shown towards your friends.
I think a lot of people still have this idea that ‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend’ and while that sounds correct in theory, in practice it’s much more complicated. Persons A and B might both hate C, but A still might be a douche towards B. Third parties exist. It’s not all black and white.
Like yeah, ‘Punch a Nazi’ is cool, but also uplift Jewish people and listen to what they have to say. Show them kindness. ‘Fuck TERFs’ is great but also don’t forget to offer all of your love and support to trans women. ‘If you say anything bad about autistic people, I’ll beat the shit out of you’ is fantastic, but if you don’t actually support autistic people when you meet them, what’s the point?
This isn’t a callout about anything in particular and I’m not upset at anyone or anything, I think it’s just a good thing to remember.💗
