Guys, I need your help again.
Last year, Alaska reached record-breaking levels of heat. There were a bunch of forest fires, and a lot of salmon died. It was too hot to exercise, and my room was super stuffy and uncomfortable even when I opened the window and turned the fan on. This year, it seems like it’s just as hot as last year.
The fact that the northernmost of the United States is reaching temperatures comparable to that of the southernmost makes me anxious to no end. Is this a sign that it’s too late and it’ll continue to get worse from here? Will things ever get better again? I’m having panic attacks just thinking about it.
Hi again
cartoon_and_animal_lover. I noticed
thehopefuljournalist has already replied, but I’ll add my own thoughts too.
What we have to realise is that climate change is already here and is happening now. Things like this - record-breaking temperatures, heatwaves, etc. - are happening and will continue to happen because they are part of climate change.
And I agree - it’s worrying that the temperatures are rising like this. It’s damaging to ecosystems, as you described. But is it a sign that it’s too late to stop further damage? No.
Yes, there are some things climate-wise that aren’t avoidable. Until greenhouse gas emissions are cut, and even for a while after that, heatwaves like this one will continue to slowly increase. I’ll be honest with you here.
But although they’re terrible, things like heatwaves and fires do not mean that we’re now in a state of uncontrollable runaway climate change. It’s still not too late, scientifically speaking, to start cutting greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, I’d say they make an even stronger case in favour of pushing for climate action.
As for advice? I honestly advise you, if it’s worrying you to the point where you’re having panic attacks, to practice self-care, and to try your best to take your mind off of it for a while. I don’t advocate for ignoring the climate emergency at all, but thinking about this is clearly causing you more stress than is healthy.
I know it’s hard to stop thinking about something that is all around you. But there are plenty of things - some of which
thehopefuljournalist already talked about - that you can do to help put your mind a little more at ease.
I hope this helped. Stay safe, stay strong, and take care of yourself. 💚
Can I chime in? Idk about you, but knowing what things are out there that can help, helps me. If you want to have some sources of actual “We can fix this and we already know how,” hope, look into Restoration Agriculture, Rewilding, Permaculture, mob grazing and the Fibershed movement. These are things which can actually reverse climate change if put into large scale effect.
If you read up on all that, you’ll see that there are ways that you can help too. Plant a tree or three. Improve your soil. Buy food and clothes created by restoration agriculture farmers. Start a permaculture club and encourage your neighbours to also improve their soil by growing fresh food.
(Also buy less plastic, switch over to green energy etc etc.) But yeah, even if you only do a tiny individual amount, many individuals doing something can make a big impact.
