The problem is that women are only valued when they behave the way men want them do. a strong woman (or in this case, a strong female character) is only strong when they perfectly fit certain roles like typical male behavior (women who show physical prowess) or when they are oversexualized to fulfill (male) sexual fantasies or when they are complete desexualized to portray motherly/sisterly all forgiving, self-sacrificing roles. Women, in real life and fiction, have their worth tied to how they relate to men. It’s the whole ‘respect women because they are another’s man [mother/daughter/sister/etc].
Padmé doesn’t fit into what our sexist society expects of women. She’s not sexualized enough to be a femme fatale and she’s not perfect and submissive enough do put on a holy pedestal. The one reading characteristics some people see in her is her ability to fight and when that was removed in ROTS, in their eyes, she completely lost the little valued she had. Padmé is only worth of admiration when she’s behaving like the male heroes and it’s shocking how many people don’t realize how sexist that is. but, again, considering the world we are living it’s not really THAT surprising.
On top of that, we have a society had has little respect for women and a strong prejudice against mental illness and any display of emotions (that is not portrayed in a ‘manly’ fashion). Crying, sobbing, begging are behaviors associated with weakness (and women). It’s why so many people hated and mocked Anakin for his behavior throughout the prequels. Crying, being soft, having romantic dreams, wanting a loving family is for women…for weak women.
