megansplants:
The problem with yards:
Great idea, except:
For the fact that moss requires a massive amount of humidity and water to survive
Moss has a root system less than an inch deep so would directly contribute to increased erosion and be unable to absorb excess rain and runoff which….
Leads directly to increased water in streets, aka more waste runoff that can’t be reused due to pollution in the streets and sewers
Does ZERO for native pollinators (butterflies, bees, wasps, and bats)
Contributes to the exact same biodiversity problem that perfect grass yards do — aka zero bidiversity
———
If you don’t want to have a standard grass lawn, here’s the better landscaping alternative:
Native grasses — the ones that have root systems 12+ inches long that will help with both soil and water retention and increase biodiversity
Native flowers, to encourage native pollinators and boost biodiversity of both flowers and insects
Native trees to add shade, reducing evaporation, lowering temperature, and increasing hiding places for local biodiversity (pollinators, insects, birds, etc)
DON’T MAKE STUPID CHOICES JUST TO AVOID OTHER BAD CHOICES.
Do your research to make sure your “alternative” doesn’t cause equal or MORE damage than the original problem.
