I’m lovin it.

This post fails to include the entire context and point of this stunt, which was to protest the lack of Asian representation in US media and advertising. And the legit HEIST including fake McDonalds uniforms that they had to pull off to get it up

(Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/blogs-trending-45402404)

Guys, there’s a follow up:

McDonald’s wants more Asian-American representation in their marketing, and is going to feature both Maravilla and Toledo in an upcoming campaign. But the good news doesn’t end there — each will be given a $25,000 check for their participation in the promotion.

They were on the Ellen Show. (video)

As far as the picture goes, a member of McDonald’s corporate office reached out and told them it had to be removed for renovation purposes, but it was going to be auctioned off and the proceeds would go to the Ronald McDonald House Houston charity.

GOOD FOR THEM

That’s… a surprisingly wholesome outcome

Despite what modern core nihilism will tell you, the accidental nature and inherent meaninglessness of life as a biological phenomenon does not mean that our efforts are pointless but instead allows us all to determine what we personally desire out of life. It means we are free to pursue what our hearts desire, and so enables each of us to find our own unique meaning.

Also love is real.

And the majority of people in the world are inherently good-natured.

freud: EVERY dude wants to fuck his mom and and EVERY girl wants to fuck her dad and also wants to be a man secretly

men: WOW!!!!!!!!!

“In the 1890s, when Freud was in the dawn of his career, he was struck by how many of his female patients were revealing childhood incest victimization to him. Freud concluded that child sexual abuse was one of the major causes of emotional disturbances in adult women and wrote a brilliant and humane paper called “The Aetiology of Hysteria.” However, rather than receiving acclaim from his colleagues for his ground-breaking insights, Freud met with scorn. He was ridiculed for believing that men of excellent reputation (most of his patients came from upstanding homes) could be perpetrators of incest. Within a few years, Freud buckled under this heavy pressure and recanted his conclusions. In their place he proposed the “Oedipus complex,” which became the foundation of modern psychology. According to this theory any young girl actually desires sexual contact with her father, because she wants to compete with her mother to be the most special person in his life. Freud used this construct to conclude that the episodes of incestuous abuse his clients had revealed to him had never taken place; they were simply fantasies of events the women had wished for when they were children and that the women had come to believe were real. This construct started a hundred-year history in the mental health field of blaming victims for the abuse perpetrated on them and outright discrediting of women’s and children’s reports of mistreatment by men.”

one of the hardest things to learn as a depressed former Gifted Kid™ is that half-assed is better than nothing. take the 50%, 40%, even 20% job. scrubbing your face is better than not taking a shower at all. picking up your clothes is better than never cleaning. nibbling on some bread is better than starving.

DO THINGS HALFWAY. NOW YOU’RE 100% BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE BEFORE.

One of my college professors used to say “anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.”  I didn’t understand that for years because I didn’t do anything poorly, I couldn’t do anything poorly, I had to Do Everything Perfectly.

But brushing your teeth for 30 seconds is better than not brushing them at all when that 2 minutes seems exhausting.  Doing ten minutes of yoga is better than 10 minutes of sitting when 30 minutes of cardio sounds impossible.  Changing my clothes is good when a whole shower is impossible.  Standing on the porch for a few minutes is worth it after being in the house for three straight days because I don’t have the energy to go anywhere.

Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly… because doing it poorly is better than not doing it.

So I just had a thought

What if supernatural creatures don’t exist anymore? What if they did once, but through the years, they slowly mixed in with humans?

You can see the blood of fairies in the way a ballet dancer hovers in mid air before he or she hits the ground. You can see it in the way that middle school girl never forgets when someone makes her a promise. You can see it in how that one little boy in the kindergarten class seems more comfortable in the forest on that field trip than the others.

You can see the blood of dryads in hikers who never trip over roots. You can see it in that suburban grandmother never lets any of her garden die. You can see it in that one kid who climbs a tree faster than his friends, barely looking at the branches as he goes.

You can see the blood of naiads in the way a professional swimmer seems to command the water to help them. You can see it in how a cross country runner needs a water break more often than his teammates. You can see it in the way that one girl in your class always has a water bottle on her desk.

You can see the blood of mermaids in a surfer who can be tossed around underwater for a long time without drowning. You can see it in a teenage boy who doesn’t have to pretend to be unbothered by the pressure when he races his friends to the bottom of a swimming pool. You can see it in the little girl who wades into every stream she sees on a hike without quite knowing why.

You can see the blood of sirens in people who never have a problem with getting people to date them. You can see it in that soprano who can hit notes most of her fellows can only dream of. You can see it in the camp counselor who all the straight girls have a crush on, who can play guitar and sing better than any of the others.

You can see the blood of shapeshifters in the way an actor adjusts their personality to become their character with scary accuracy. You can see it in the subconscious, barely noticeable changes a tween girl’s eyes make to match her outfit better. You can see it in the way you always lose that one friend in a crowd if you’re not careful, because he’s just too good at blending in.

People who carry the blood of werewolves don’t change with the full moon anymore, but you can still see it in the way your best friend always knows something is wrong, though even they don’t know they’re smelling the changes in your body chemistry. You can see it in the way that one guy always seems to eat more than the reasonable amount of red meat at an all-you-can-eat buffet. You can see it in the way that one werido never has a problem when the teacher turns off the lights before a PowerPoint presentation because her eyes adjust quicker and better than yours.

The blood of supernatural creatures may have mostly faded away. But if you look closely, you can still see it.

I feel a novel series beginning to take hold.

AAAHHH UPDATE ART YAAAASSS

Not to go Greek myth on main here or anything. But a large part of the reason why a majority of monsters and such in Greek myth are women is because while men’s sexuality and such was seen as orderly and necessary for society, women’s sexuality (and women in general) were seen as needing to be controlled or else essentially their sheer destructive force would wipe out society.

Additionally Medusa was originally exceptionally beautiful, got raped, and then cursed to be ugly by Athena (bc side note, Poseidon raped Medusa in Athena’s temple). However my favorite thought on the matter - which comes direct from a horde of tea snob classics professors including one who studies pottery and cooks at the college cafeteria for funsies, and another who I’m 99% sure is a chaotic neutral bisexual who curses at people in Latin - is that Athena actually didn’t CURSE Medusa. She provided Medusa with a way of PROTECTING HERSELF, which men at the time viewed as being monstrous.

So anyway the point here is that Medusa being gay would make absolute sense Greek mythos wise. It’s just that male poets would NEVER talk about that.

<3 Medusa and her wife living a happy life on their island and turning gross ass dudes who try and bother them into stone is the kind of goodness I am here for <3

To all my lovely followers who don’t already do so:

Do you have access to Amazon Prime/Amazon Video? Do you like sci-fi? Do you like sci-fi with people of color? Do you like women in powerful positions? Do you like women of color in powerful positions? Do you like queer interracial relationships? Do you like spaceships and the expansion of humankind across the solar system? Do you like political drama but also things that go pew pew at high speed? Do you like your sci-fi to deal with the sociological consequences of living someplace that isn’t Earth, and of people being people?

Do you like the notion of a Samoan boxer playing a traumatized and incredibly badass marine, a black British actress playing a literal rocket scientist and engineer, an Ojibwe actress playing a supremely determined station/spaceship commander, an Iranian-American woman playing an older, tired-of-your-bullshit leader of humanity? Yeah you do.

Watch The Expanse.

There’s currently three seasons out, season 4 is coming in December. Also there’s books! There’s so many books! Novels and short stories and what have you! This story is immense and wonderful and complicated and a thrill.

Badass women in positions of power! So many non-white folks with relevant roles! (Cas Anvar, Nick Tarabay, François Chau, Chad Coleman, Florence Faivre, Terry Chen, Leah Jung, Byron Mann, Nadine Nicole, among others.) Beautiful cinematography! Spaceships! Politics in space!

Just for clarification, because I keep seeing some ridiculous posts (but get that UK politics can be confusing and weird):

The public did not elect Boris Johnson. He was elected as the new leader of the Conservative Party, by members of the Conservative Party. Approximately 180 thousand people. The population of the UK is around 66 million. The same thing happened when Theresa May first became PM.

This was not a general election - the last one was in 2017 and the next is scheduled for 2022.

natalie portman radiates such a terrifying energy i can’t describe it….. it’s not exactly evil but it’s not warm either…. i feel like she could unhinge her jaw and drag me into the ocean like a kraken but she wouldn’t bc it’s undignified

Wanna know why?

“Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman told the crowd at Saturday’s Women’s March in downtown Los Angeles that she experienced what she calls “sexual terrorism” as a 13-year-old after the release of the film The Professional.

Portman described her pride and excitement in releasing the film, only to encounter sexually explicit messages both directed toward her and made about her.

”I excitedly opened my first fan mail to read a rape fantasy that a man had written me,” she recalled. “A countdown was started on my local radio show to my 18th birthday, euphemistically the date that I would be legal to sleep with. Movie reviewers talked about my budding breasts in reviews.”

The experience, she said, changed the way she expressed herself publicly, in order to limit the ways she could be objectified by others.

”I understood very quickly, even as a 13-year-old, that if I were to express myself sexually, I would feel unsafe,” she said. “And that men would feel entitled to discuss and objectify my body to my great discomfort. So I quickly adjusted my behavior. I rejected any role that even had a kissing scene and talked about that choice deliberately in interviews. I emphasized how bookish I was and how serious I was. And I cultivated an elegant way of dressing. I built a reputation for basically being prudish, conservative, nerdy, serious, in an attempt to feel that my body was safe and that my voice would be listened to.”

Video of the speech here: https://www.vox.com/2018/1/21/16917130/natalie-portman-womens-march

I support Natalie Portman unhinging her jaw and dragging every last man who made her feel this way into the deep like a kraken.

The moment people were like “oh shit water benders”

I really loved this episode though, it was an established theme in the show that firebenders are associated with death and waterbenders are associated with life and healing, and up to this point it all seemed so clear-cut, because fire obviously destroys everything in its path while water can put out fires and heals, as we’ve seen particularly in Katara’s case with her natural healing ability.

Then we meet Hama, who due to years of torture and hatred has found a way to turn the classic gentler waterbending ways into a weapon of destruction and manipulation, and honestly I can’t think of a better way to introduce people to the fact that things are never as clear cut as they seem.  We’ve thought of waterbenders as the good guys up until this point, so it’s jarring to find out that no, despite stereotypes and traditions, there are always going to be good and bad people in every culture/group, but that’s the point of the entire show.

It’s revisited later too when Aang and Zuko find the Sun Warriors who teach them firebending is not just about death and destruction, but also about bringing warmth to the earth and making plants grow and both Aang and Zuko needed to hear that they weren’t just instruments of destruction and gain confidence from the idea of using firebending to create life and I love it I love this show so much.

I’ve said this roughly 1,000 times on this blog, but I think this show is a masterpiece of narrative. They establish characters and cultures that any other show would codify and then turn their own concept on its ear in believeable ways time and time again. Really exceptional.

August 3, London - Stop Tommy, Stop the Racists

Tommy Robinson is back in jail for contempt of court.

The far right will be marching in London on Saturday 3rd August under the banner ‘Free Tommy’. We’re going to be there to oppose them.

Tommy Robinson is part of a far-right movement spreading violence across the globe. From an increase in hate crimes to the mass shootings of Christchurch and Pittsburgh, racists and fascists are getting bolder by the day. Their words and politics are creeping into the mainstream. In the US, migrants are detained in concentration camps and in the UK the ‘hostile environment’ harasses migrants through a brutal system of detention centres and deportations.

Tommy’s part in all of this? To whip up hatred against Muslims and refugees, to spread fear and to help radicalise the Finsbury Park van attacker to the point of murder.

Join us on the 3rd of August in Central London, when a coalition of anti-fascists, feminists, migrant solidarity groups, unions, and many more groups and unaffiliated people will come together to oppose Tommy Robinson and his vicious politics.

¡NO PASARÁN!
