Everything You Need to Know About the Global Protest Wave:
seandotpolitics:
Popular protest movements have swept the globe this month, with anti-government demonstrators taking to the streets in Chile, Lebanon, Iraq, Hong Kong, Bolivia, Ecuador, Haiti, and Spain. Millions of people around the world have participated in demonstrations, and hundreds have been killed. In some nations, victories have been won. In others, they seem elusive.

Chile protesters: 'We are subjugated by the rich. It's time for that to end':
news-queue:
The spark that lit the flame was a 3% hike in subway fares, but after 12 days of mass protests and street violence, Chile’s worst unrest in decades has transformed into a nationwide uprising demanding dramatic changes to the country’s economic and political system.
Eighteen people have died in the violence and 7,000 have been arrested amid widespread outbreaks of violence and arson, and credible allegations of human rights abuses by the security forces.
The leaderless movement has forced the billionaire president, Sebastián Piñera, on the defensive, prompting him to replace eight ministers and announce a string of emergency measures including a small increase in the minimum wage and higher taxes on wealthy Chileans.
But such moves have not been enough to defuse the protests, which are driven by deep-rooted disillusionment over inequality that has left millions of citizens frozen out of Chile’s economic rise.
One per cent of Chile’s population earns 33% of the nation’s wealth, making it the most unequal country in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development group of nations.
Many protesters are calling for a new constitution to replace the one written in 1980 during the reign of August Pinochet, which created the legal basis for a market-driven economic model that has privatized pensions, health and education.
Juan Ángel, 60, school teacher
“I want change and I want it now. The cost of living keeps rising and our money is badly distributed – in pensions, in healthcare and in education. There is privilege for armed forces, the priests, the politicians, the corporations. And to change that? You have to change the constitution.
“This is a small country, we have natural resources. This could be a prosperous country if our riches were better distributed. We could be marvelous. A country that is prosperous and happy and in peace.
“I’m not afraid. I have nothing to lose. I’m doing this for my granddaughter who is six months old.”
Melissa Medina, 25, makeup artist
“My grandmother fought against the dictatorship; my mother fought in her time; I am the mother of a six-year-old girl and now it’s my turn to protest.

Ahahah oh man an amazing thing that actually happened???
NO Baby girl you are too young for this life and pain.
Her mom thinks it’s hilarious and gave me permission to make a comic out of it? It’s awesome that she has all the Disney movies at her house, and they didn’t know about Miyazaki before! Now they do and watch it with her!
I let her watch Totoro weeks after that! She got really into it too!
This is just so pure and wholesome omgosh <3
she saw characters her own age experience and articulate emotions she herself is still coming to grips with. so yes, baby’s first otp, but also baby’s first “i saw the depth and complexity of my own experiences represented in a loving way.”

im weirdly knowlagable in the history of soda i dont even drink soda why do i know so much about it
coke and pepsi taste different because coke was invent before refrigeration so it was designed to be drunk warm, while pepsi was designed after refrigeration was invented so it was designed to be drunk cold. as a result the tastes are different but if you drink pepsi cold and coke warm theyll taste the same.
Why the fuck do you know this
i honestly have no idea
coke’s recipe was originally green but the designers made it brown so it looked more like tea
Had they never seen green tea?
i dont even know if green tea was invented in 1886 but they wanted to make the public more open to eating the fizzy drink
Green tea was invented in the 13th century and made up 22% of the tea thrown off the ship in the Boston Tea Party
alan i know about soda not green tea
i will trade u information abt bees and carrier pigeons for information abt the history of soda
no one knows where the origin of the name ‘7up’ started but it did have a mood stabilizer in the original recipe found in present day anti-depressants
i want facts about bees and carrier pigeons now
Carrier pigeons come from a species of Wild Rock pigeon, and their flights could be as long as 1800 km and were used as early as 3000 years ago.
You know in old cartoons where a character throws a beehive at someone, and you think ‘lol, but that wouldn’t work in real life’. Turns out it would, and did. People used to lob beehives at the approximate location of the enemy forces to expose them.
this is amazing thank you

someone please write this! I could see Finn’s “hyperserious overcompensation phase” as him being sort of like a church youth group member, but with a space cult instead of evangelical Christianity? He’d be like: “the First Order is amazing, you get rations so you don’t have to starve, you should totally join…” I don’t think he’d be an edgy space goth like Kylo, he’d be sort of a buttoned-up little missionary. And Rey is seriously side-eyeing him, but they go around adventuring together on Jakku because plot (and because Finn’s hot). Besides, Finn is so painfully earnest that Rey doesn’t have the heart to punch him or tell him to shut up about his space death cult; it would be like kicking a puppy.

oh but that’s the PLOT part
the circumstances under which they meet would matter! maybe finn is stranded on jakku and needs rey’s help. maybe rey has something she’s bargaining with. maybe early on finn has a reason to sympathize with rey but in all other respects he’s overcompensating
and maybe they do get into a fight at first! maybe teen finnrey enemies to lovers would work and I don’t think it would be a clone of reyIo, with teenage finn being a very different sort of FO member from kylo ren

has anyone ever written teenage canonverse finnrey where finn hasn’t figured out that he hates the order yet and is having an edgy hyperserious overcompensation phase

what drugs were they on when they made this
Cab Calloway rotascoped!
Whoever thought of this was drinking absinthe
Thanks, Now I have nightmares
this was long before cartoons were ever thought of as ‘for kids’, the target audience of this one was roughly 20-40
betty boop cartoons featuring cab calloway singing, yes, but slang has changed so much you dont realize he was singing about opium, sugar daddies, death, weed, sex, booze, and gambling back when gambling was nearly as tabboo as sex and drugs. ‘minnie the moocher’ where cab calloway is a dancing walrus is specifically about someone who does literally everything on that list but die
most of the animation studios had their ‘thing’ to make their animation stand out, disney had fluid motion linked with quality music, warner brothers had top notch dialogue with carefully crafted facial expressions, MGM had comedic timing down to the individual frame that no live action comedian could dream of achieving, terrytoons had the budget of a ham sandwitch and a fistfull of nickels
fleischer studios however had authentic jazz and heavy toned subject matter, often crossing the line of what we think of as ‘cartoon violence’ into realistic
idk why this is making me so emotional???
I love this. I’ve always had a love for cartoons
Cab Calloway, he was a legend performer and entertainer, although he’s listed as a jazz singer he did much more with his voice, his singing style and delivery was very unique. Cab (with his band) was the first black artist to sell over a million copies of a single record and he paved the way for many artists to come. Happy Black History Month.

Oh hey I haven’t yelled about voting in a while
Reposting this because some of y’all need a reminding.
Another reminder:
VOTE YOUR WHOLE BALLOT.
A Democratic President does nothing if Congress is controlled by Republicans. Your local elections are important, too. (It took us 20 years, but you notice we don’t have issues with our sheriff out here in Phoenix now we’ve voted out Joe Arpaio.)
Don’t skip any. Look up names on your phone while you’re in the ballot booth if you have to. VOTE YOUR WHOLE BALLOT.
A PSA because a lot of people don’t know this:
You CAN take your phone into the ballot booth, no one will stop you. You CAN google names from inside the ballot booth, no one will stop you. The only time you can get in trouble is, in some states, if you take a photo of your ballot. You CAN also take a long time voting. There are lots of booths usually, don’t worry about the line if you need to think about anything.
Voting is not a high school exam. You’re allowed to bring your phone. Please do that in case there’s something on the ballot you don’t understand!
reblogging for the last bit because I didnt know it.
ONE LAST POINT, though:
if there is a race where it says, “Vote for any 2″, you DO NOT have to vote for two. (Or three, or whatever number.)
This may matter in a race like, say, the local one for town council– there are two Republicans running, and one Democrat, and two seats available, and it goes to whoever gets the most votes.
If you vote for the Democrat, then scratch your head and shrug and pick one of the Republicans too, then the Democrat is almost certain not to win, because so many people will have voted for the two Republicans.
In this specific kind of case, you are far better off, if you think the incumbent Republicans need to be shaken up (just, you know, to pick a random, you know, currently-applicable scenario that is actually this local race), NOT voting for one of them, but just picking the one Democrat and leaving the rest blank.
Apart from that, though, weigh in on every race and absolutely feel free to Google the candidates and take your time, if you get there and don’t know how to fill out your ballot. Just keep that in mind– you also can feel free not to vote in unopposed races, if you don’t like the candidate. Leave it blank, and then they can’t say later they had a mandate from the masses. You don’t have to fill out your whole ballot to have your say.
Often your local League of Women Voters website will have information on the candidates, but not always– in past years, this has often been true, and it has helped me a lot. LoWV is nonpartisan and mostly just really wants people to participate in government. (Though they have found themselves in opposition to the current régime, because the current national GOP party platform seems to be pretty sturdily anti-voting. That shouldn’t be partisan, and yet?)

By Scott Reid
Etymology: Titan
First Described By: Brodkorb, 1963
Classification: Dinosauromorpha, Dinosauriformes, Dracohors, Dinosauria, Saurischia, Eusaurischia, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Tetanurae, Orionides, Avetheropoda, Coelurosauria, Tyrannoraptora, Maniraptoromorpha, Maniraptoriformes, Maniraptora, Pennaraptora, Paraves, Eumaniraptora, Averaptora, Avialae, Euavialae, Avebrevicauda, Pygostaylia, Ornithothoraces, Euornithes, Ornithuromorpha, Ornithurae, Neornithes, Neognathae, Neoaves, Inopinaves, Telluraves, Australaves, Cariamiformes, Phorusrhacoidea, Phorusrhacidae, Phorusrhacinae
Status: Extinct
Time and Place: Between 5 and 1.8 million years ago, from the Zanclean to the Gelasian ages of the Pliocene through Pleistocene
Titanis is known from the Santa Fe River and Nueces River Formations of Florida and Texas
Physical Description: Titanis was a Terror Bird, one of the largest known Terror Birds, a group of large flightless predatory birds that terrorized the Americas during the Cenozoic Era, right up until humans would have appeared on the scene. Titanis is one of the latest members of this group, and the one that made the journey up to North America - most Terror Birds are from South America. It would have been 2.5 meters tall - much taller than a person - and would have weighed 150 kilograms. There was a lot of variance in size and height, however, indicating that Titanis may have had at least some sexual dimorphism. It had a short tail and round body, with long and powerful legs. In fact, it also had very robust toes - and one of the strongest middle toes known for a Terror Bird. It had very small, useless wings, that were very much locked in against the body - they didn’t have a lot of folding power compared to other birds. This indicates the wings really were… useless. They didn’t use them for raptor prey restraint or anything else, making them distinctly different from the Dromaeosaurids of long past. Titanis had a very thick neck, which would have supported a large head with a very impressive and terrifying hooked bill - complete with extensive crunching power!
By Dmitry Bogdanov, CC BY-SA 3.0
Diet: As a Terror Bird, Titanis primarily ate large mammals - and some medium and small sized mammals, of course, but basically it was able to cronch anything around it.
Behavior: Terror Birds are most closely related to modern Seriemas, and so a lot of their behavior has been guessed based on Seriemas today. As such - and given that it didn’t have much in the way of wings - Titanis probably mainly relied on its feet in kicking its prey to death. It would chase its food down, kick it, and potentially pin it down. Then, final death blows would have been delivered with the powerful cronch of its beak, though of course the hook on the beak would have allowed increased tearing and shredding. While modern Seriemas are solitary, it is possible that Titanis and other Terror Birds may have used groups to take down larger prey, though they probably would have been more groups of convenience than formal packs. It is possible they had similar breeding habits to living Seriemas, but even that is a question - their larger size, different niche, and general different time periods would provide large differences. And we don’t even know the actual breeding habits of Seriemas very well! So, that being said, Titanis would have probably been fairly territorial over their nests, and both parents were probably involved in the care of the nest and then the young, even after fledging. The young would follow the parents around until reaching maturity. As such, it’s possible that the parents may have hunted for the young, and brought food back for them until they were old enough to hunt for themselves. Then, upon leaving the parents, they probably would have been fairly solitary until finding a mate of their own.
By José Carlos Cortés
Ecosystem: Titanis primarily lived in open grassland habitats in the southern parts of the United States, clearly extending from Texas through to Florida and probably found all over that range. It stuck to warmer, probably wetter habitats, though the exact environments it lived in aren’t very well studied in terms of general flora. Fauna, however, is well known. Titanis lived alongside a wide variety of other animals - in Citrus County, it was found with a variety of frogs, turtles, lizards, rabbits, horses, shrews, bears, dogs, mustelids, and cats (including Smilodon), armadillos, sloths, the Mastodon, cows, peccaries, camels, and deer. There were, of course, many dinosaurs as well - in addition to Titanis, there were waders (indicating a non-insignificant amount of water in this ecosystem, possible coastline, swamps, or lakes), vultures, pheasants, ducks, falcons, owls, pigeons (including the passenger pigeon), woodpeckers, blackbirds, corvids, sparrows, finches, flycatchers, cardinals, rails, grebes, herons, bitterns, and buzzards. Basically, a fairly typical array of North American birds! In Gilchrist County, Titanis also lived alongside similar creatures, including Smilodon, though without the Mastodon - though there was Rhynchotherium! Unfortunately, its Texan relatives aren’t well known, though it stands to reason that it would have been similar to other locations.
By Ripley Cook
Other: Titanis is one of the largest known Terror Birds, and one of the largest known ones discovered early in our understanding of Terror Birds. In fact, we knew about Titanis so early on that there are a lot of old depictions of it - including ones where it has… hands. Clawed hands. That is very much wrong and cringy, but hey, there are pictures of it! Titanis is also fascinating because of its place in Earth’s History - it is one of the (only?) known Terror Birds from North America. This occurred due to the Great American Interchange, a sort of mini-columbian exchange where North America and South America combined, leading to the mixing of animals from both continents together. The traditional narrative says that Terror Birds went extinct because sabre-toothed cats came in from North America, but this is flawed for three very big reasons: 1) there were already Sabre Toothed animals filling that niche in South America, they were just Marsupials; 2) Terror Birds stuck around for a long time after the Interchange, and 3) Terror Birds reached North America in return! So Titanis helps to showcase that Terror Birds were doing just fine during this ecological exchange. So why did it - and other Terror Birds - go extinct? Probably the Ice Age, though for now, we can’t be sure. Regardless, they went extinct… probably before people got there. There are fossils that might be Titanis from 15,000 years ago, which would indicate they were still there when people got there. Which is terrifying. And also might point to humans being the cause of their extinction. Still, that seems unlikely, and they were definitely on the decline before then - so the Ice Age seems like the most logical explanation.

“Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman told the crowd at Saturday’s Women’s March in downtown Los Angeles that she experienced what she calls “sexual terrorism” as a 13-year-old after the release of the film The Professional.
Portman described her pride and excitement in releasing the film, only to encounter sexually explicit messages both directed toward her and made about her.
”I excitedly opened my first fan mail to read a rape fantasy that a man had written me,” she recalled. “A countdown was started on my local radio show to my 18th birthday, euphemistically the date that I would be legal to sleep with. Movie reviewers talked about my budding breasts in reviews.”
The experience, she said, changed the way she expressed herself publicly, in order to limit the ways she could be objectified by others.
”I understood very quickly, even as a 13-year-old, that if I were to express myself sexually, I would feel unsafe,” she said. “And that men would feel entitled to discuss and objectify my body to my great discomfort. So I quickly adjusted my behavior. I rejected any role that even had a kissing scene and talked about that choice deliberately in interviews. I emphasized how bookish I was and how serious I was. And I cultivated an elegant way of dressing. I built a reputation for basically being prudish, conservative, nerdy, serious, in an attempt to feel that my body was safe and that my voice would be listened to.”

hey,
bunjywunjy - this might be your jam (and any other dinosaur enthusiasts, it’s a heck of a read)
man that’s not just a heck of a read it’s fuckin GROUNDBREAKING is what it is!
this dude actually found a large fossil deposit that was created not just close to, but actually DURING THE K-PG EXTINCTION EVENT.
IT’S LITERALLY A WINDOW BACK IN TIME TO THE CHICXULUB IMPACT, AND TURNS OUT IT WAS WORSE THAN ANYTHING WE COULD POSSIBLY HAVE IMAGINED
it’s a geologic snapshot of the apocalypse.
reading the full article is certainly a trip, and to summarize for those who are intimidated by longer reads:
- chicxulub is the given name for the meteor that struck/initiated the event
- the paleontologist within is described as making groundbreaking discoveries of multiple species every day, but many of his peers discount him because they’re grouchy old dudes he accidentally had a fragment of a turtle bone involved in a larger reconstruction of a fossil this one time and they won’t let him live it down.
- the extinction event was so fast and so destructive, this guy describes this particular dig-site as being so densely layered with dead and dying creatures, there is a lot of organic tissues that have been preserved, and he is able to even discern that many of the marine and freshwater fish may have still been alive as they were buried due to molten glass being found in their gills, implying they were still attempting to breathe.
- they looked into exactly when and how this could have happened, having freshwater and marine animals stacked on top of mammals and larger dinosaurs (including an amazing deinonychus forearm discovery he was able to match to feather fossils he was finding atop the pile), and rather it being the initial tsunami, they are fairly sure that it was caused by a seiche of catastrophic proportions, which would have been set off within the first hour of the event. denser and larger creatures sunk to the bottom, leaving lighter debris like leaves, small fish, feathers, and molten glass on the surface.
summary: terrifying!
This is fucking incredible
Holy SHIT!

Piet helps convince farmers to plant a variety of productive trees on their land, rather than creating monocultures of palm oil trees which will eventually deplete the soil. At present, he has convinced around 2,000 farmers to join his program and the idea is spreading to surrounding communities.
This is a great example of a conservation program that works with local communities instead of against them, by allowing people to still make a living without destroying the forest.

Measles wipes out immune system's memory, study finds:
news-queue:
Measles causes long-term damage to the immune system, leaving children who have had it vulnerable to other infections long after the initial illness has passed, research has revealed.
Two studies of unvaccinated children in an Orthodox Protestant community in the Netherlands found that measles wipes out the immune system’s memory of previous illnesses, returning it to a more baby-like state, and also leaves the body less equipped to fight off new infections.
Measles eliminated between 11% and 73% of children’s protective antibodies, the research found.
“We’ve found really strong evidence that the measles virus is actually destroying the immune system,” said Prof Stephen Elledge, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School and co-author of one of the papers. “The threat measles poses to people is much greater than we previously imagined.”
Globally, measles affects more than 7 million people each year and causes more than 100,000 deaths. Reduced vaccination rates have led to a nearly 300% increase in measles infections since 2018.
The UK recently lost its measles-free status because of the fall in rates of MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) immunisation. Coverage of 95% of the population is considered necessary to prevent outbreaks. Among children aged 24 months in England, vaccination dropped from 91.2% in 2017-18 to 90.3% in 2018-19, the lowest rate since 2010.
Measles is highly contagious and can be spread when someone with the virus coughs, sneezes or exhales. Once inside the respiratory tract, the virus penetrates immune cells that sit at the interface between the lungs and bloodstream. From there, the virus replicates and spreads to immune cells throughout the body.
Previously, scientists had inferred a longer-term impact on the immune system because deaths from other infections were seen to go up after a measles outbreak, and because the virus directly attacks the immune system. The latest work for the first time uncovers the extent of the damage.
The researchers recruited volunteers from three schools in the Netherlands. They took blood samples from healthy, unvaccinated children aged four to 17 and followed up with 77 of the children who were infected in a measles outbreak in 2013 for repeat sampling.
The first paper, led by Velislava Petrova, of the Wellcome Sanger Institute and Cambridge University, says measles erodes two separate lines of defence of the immune system.

My personal favourite (and by “personal favourite” I mean “she basically singlehandedly taught me to sew) is Annika Victoria, who makes videos showing how to make common/popular clothing items like crop tops and circle skirts and how to replicate overpriced high fashion items. She also has a website with text-based tutorials and other resources.
!!!
thank you so much!
you’re very welcome! I went to exactly one (1) in-person sewing class, which was full of cliquish wine moms who scared me, so I was very relieved to find that I could learn from the comfort and privacy of my own home, where only my cats would judge me.

Rose: I wanted to show you I love you. I asked Rey and Poe and they said attacking your crush is the best way to make your feelings clear!
Finn: [to Rey and Poe] Seriously, guys?
Poe: I dunno, Hugs seems to dig it when I attack his fleet.
Rey: Yeah. When Ben and I first met, I must have shot him twenty times. I still try to shoot him every time we meet.

If this post gets 100 notes I’ll recreate the entire song through memes
OK so I’ll do my best to get this done soonish–it may be a week or two, but I’m doing it
My masterpiece… is complete.

I wish they’d release Mission Odyssey on DVD. (All of it, with the German dub if possible.) I’m trying to scrape it together on YouTube before it disappears on me.

If you didn’t sleep well last night, you can convince yourself that you did just by believing you aren’t tired. It’s called ‘placebo sleep,’ it improves cognitive function, and it makes you perform better than when you spend the day thinking about being tired.

How to Build a Kilowatt Wind Turbine for Under $30
This is a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine which uses wind energy to drive things like an alternator/generator for producing electricity, or air and water pumps for cooling, irrigation and similar.
The turbine uses the 35-40% mechanically efficient Lenz2 lift+drag design. It is made almost entirely from scrap materials, and should cost about $15-$30 for the six vane version, which can be made by two people in four hours without much effort.
The three vane version has been successfully survival tested to 80 km/h sustained winds and the six vane version to 105 km. Both will do more, but exactly how much has not yet been ascertained. The current longest running version has been up since early 2014, through reasonable storms, with no noticeable wear and tear as of yet.

I’m scared for Queer Eye
I’m afraid Netflix is doing it’s thing again and fucking up a good show…
They almost didn’t promote last season (S3) at all. A lot of people didin’t even realize it was out untill a few days later. And now the Japan special, I only knew when it was out because I follow the Fab5 on instagram, I wouldn’t have found out from Netflix. It’s not even in “New this week” or “New releases” I had to look it up myself. Also it’s not in the Queer Eye title, it’s another separate thing so I wouldn’t have seen it in my list, cause it doesn’t say “new episodes”.
Netflix is messing with the show like it did with One Day at a Time. They take great shows, diverse, fun, wholesome shows and fuck them over in such a way they can blame fans later for not watching.
I hate this so much, please go watch Queer Eye: We’re in Japan! It’s only 4 episodes and they’re great!! :’) let’s save out beloved show!!!

Does anyone know any organizations that can be supported that are fighting against this?
angryjewishsuggestion:
heres one from a little while ago and heres one from a few days ago (it discusses anti-romani racism in Europe in general but goes into Bulgaria and the integration further down.)

Can we please have sources on this? I can’t find anything about it on google.
angryjewishsuggestion:
People should 100% be talking about this because Romani people are very often targeted but rarely ever supported and this is DANGEROUS.
They are calling them by a slur, restricting Romani women’s children, talking about forced work and making reservations. Romani people were one of two groups targeted by the Final Solution (along with Jewish people) and this sounds all too familar. Listen to Romani people and help them out as much as you can, or at the very least talk about this. They are heavily targeted by racism all around the world, and especially Europe.
