The sock thing might be a joke, but I think Hux is the type of person who would appreciate practical gifts like that. I attempted to make the grenade Hux gave look like Kylo’s helmet XD Hux doesn’t trust him with a real grenade so he gave him a fake one. Still put all that effort to design it tho!

Talk From Superheroes: Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker

We’re here for a good time and a long time as we talk about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the end of this nine movie ennealogy (a word we looked up because we’re fancy.) On this week’s podcast we discuss the return of fun banter, our differing opinions on that ending, and the part we were supposed to cry but laughed.

Listen on: Apple Podcasts | Direct Download | Spotify | Stitcher

Our favorite part (SPOILERS FOR RISE OF SKYWALKER)

Diana: The biggest thing in this movie I would change is Finn because I am furious that he didn’t cause a Stormtrooper Rebellion. I always thought Finn was going to be kind of like Teal’c in Stargate, a soldier who rebels and then leads a further rebellion of soldiers who work for the bad guys, and I really thought that’s what Finn’s whole arc was going to be because now we know Storm Troopers aren’t clones who are genetically modified to obey, they’re children who are taken away from their families and indoctrinated by the First Order, which makes them much more capable of rebelling. So Finn rebels in the first one and in the second one everyone knows who he is and what’s he done.

Andrew: All the storm troopers know about it. They call him traitor and are hunting him down.

Diana: They also all see him defeating Phasma and she admits to being cowardly and breaking under rebel pressure, it’s all set up perfectly, and then Finn meets this other stormtrooper who has also rebelled but not because of Finn! She did it because the Force did it.

Andrew: And she did it with her whole crew, so she did it better than he did.

Diana: Yes, so Finn hasn’t inspired or recruited a single person into rebelling. So my exact change in this movie would be Finn gets to inspire rebellion among storm troopers. Jannah’s group specifically rebels because of him, then he realizes he can inspire MORE rebellion and so when they’re on Exegol and they have no backup coming he uses the transponder satellite and he does a big broadcast about how the soldiers are the ones with the power and he convinces the stormtroopers to rebel against the First Order.

Andrew: It almost sounds like Captain America’s speech in Winter Soldier.

Diana: A little bit. Then in my version all the stormtroopers kind of look at each other like, “are you gonna rebel?” and the ones who decide they will take off their helmets, they become individuals, and they fight back. So Finn starts a rebellion of stormtroopers and that’s how they really win the star wars, not by just killing another Sith but by convincing an entire army of soldiers to stand with them and to stand down. I stayed up all night reading the Servants of the Empire books just so I could discover that Armitage Hux basically spent the first five years of his life living in a military academy that was basically a seaside summer camp from a horror movie complete with hungry tentacle monsters that hunt animals on the beach, and near a creepy af tower where secret societies met plotted and people were tortured for either disloyalty or because they were force sensitive. Also the main method of travel on planet is via insect beasts that are ridden like horses and they have stingers on their butts.

I call that a night well spent.

I’ve got you, op, I can give you the answer! The truth is, I’m Russian. And Russians are evil (yes, all of us). So I come home from my hacker job, open a tab, block all “finn/poe” content (because OMG they’re poc!), harrass some reylos (because I can, not because I dislike abuse) and then I get in moral discussion with people about the differences between a real life and a fiction (you know, because I really like nazis and wars in real life). So my answer is simple. I’m evil and I’m here to make others lives miserable 💃

So, I was thinking about potential Hux family drama and Pryde’s possible addition to this dynamic. This fic came into being. Hux learns that he didn’t kill his father after all, from a certain point of view.

There is no explicit sex or violence, but Hux imagines some terrible, unseeable things (his parents having sex, Pryde and Brendol having sex, etc.) . None of it is described in any detail, but it is cringy. He also considers having sex with Pryde for favors before Pryde tells him a rambling story about whose son he might actually be, and digresses to tell him that he should start checking for prostate cancer in a few years. Because IMO, it’s not Star Wars without a near-miss on accidental incest and a messed up father-son relationship.

Excerpt:

“Brendol was a proud man, too,” Pryde went on. “Despite going on about having a ‘bastard’, I think he was pleased to have a child attributed to him. Because he had this problem, where he couldn’t always—”

Hux let out a shriek. This was enough. He did not want to hear about his father’s habits in the bedroom. Though at this point, he wished that his father had been so impotent he’d never been born.

Mercy’s knees were digging in to his sternum. Matt should have found it uncomfortable, but instead it just felt real. It felt solid and present, and it felt like it belonged to him. The Aug was gazing across the pillow at him; his expression was so open Matt thought he’d fall into it. He reached over to touch Mercy’s cheek, then put his hand on the Aug’s back and pulled him closer.

“I think you’re shorter than you are,” he mumbled, indicating the length of Mercy’s legs, folded tight in between them.

“I’m shorter than you,” the Aug offered. He seemed perfectly comfortable curled up in a ball, caged by Matt’s heavy arm.Matt shook his head slightly, pushing his cheek into his pillow. Without his glasses, Mercy’s outlines were a shade fuzzy, but Matt knew every shape he was looking at. Every line.

“No, I mean- in my head, I always think you’re, like, way shorter. But you’re tall.”

“My posture is bad,” the Aug whispered. Then, voice joking and face open with hope for a good landing, he said, “But I’m happy I’m in your head.”

Survival instincts are powerful things. We know on a very basic level that if other people aren’t on board with our needs, our chances of survival go down quite a lot.

(I’m laughing a bit because this morning a discord I run got very into telling one person in another timezone to go to bed, and I had to step in and go, “Is this argument actually keeping you up longer? Should we stop?” and that person admitted that it might be midnight where they were, but they weren’t going to go to sleep for another few hours so no amount of pushing would make it happen)

A lot of reactance comes out of repeated interactions with people or systems that have not understood what you needed or what makes sense, and pushed you into doing things that were aversive or harmful. It’s the common pairing of “person says to do a thing” and “having a bad outcome” that triggers irritation, anger, and the will to resist.

The antidote is accurate empathy, which means the ability to understand another person’s mental and emotional state, and then the ability to act in a way that is not unpleasant or harmful for them. Usually, that means presenting them with the information they need and then letting them decide for themselves.

The people I really think this is important for is flat earthers, anti-vaxxers, and climate deniers. I don’t know if you’ve seen the Netflix documentary “Behind the Curve”, but it got me thinking along these lines. These people make sense as people with ingrained reactance to arguments from authority. They’re people with a deep-seated aversion to “this is the way to do things Because Science Says.” They’ve had experience of science making them feel less-than, or being applied in a way that crushed their own need for independence. For them, denying an obvious part of established science is their way of saying, “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me.”

This is why so many of the obvious arguments tend to backfire with them: because those arguments are saying, “You are wrong, you don’t know the truth, you need to submit to authority.” Which they quite naturally resist as more of the same bullshit that got them into this position in the first place.

So the way to engage them is way more to encourage curiosity and open thought–to say, “Come here, look at this, what do you think? What decision will you make because of it?” That’s why public health authorities fund games like The Scientific Method or Vax!, which try to engage adults in a vaccine simulation that lets them experiment and observe. That way they can reach conclusions that don’t feel so much like submitting to a foreign authority.

Being willing and able to understand other people, and to have the patience and kindness to let them work things through themselves instead of just shouting DO WHAT I TELL YOU ALREADY, really are the tools to building a better world.

(And it works for you, yourself too. A lot of the things that are good for us, we resist because it means squashing some essential inner experience that needs to be listened to. If we listen to it, it can often be appeased in a different way. Humans need to be heard and understood. After all, if someone doesn’t understand a baby is hungry and feed it thousands of times, over and over, that baby will never grow up into an adult.)

when pompeii was first being excavated and studied ppl were writing about how there were literal hundreds of brothels. every street and every corner. and this was kind of accepted for a couple of years before someone went “hey that doesn’t actually make any sense at all. what are you using as proof there are so many brothels? what’s the criteria for it to count?” and it turned out ppl were like “oh if there’s a dick drawn on it it’s a brothel.”

so anyway after re-evaluating the criteria there’s only one single building in all of pompeii that researchers are pretty sure was a brothel.

while the “picture of penis = brothel” thing IS really dumb it does provide the wonderful mental image of archaeologists just going around and marking every dick they find on a map and growing more and more horrified and disgusted

Alla this, except I believe he’s still alive.

I really can’t argue that this is the intent of the director, because the movie is all over the place fucked up. But if I were to make that argument, I would point that an early version of the script had him run through by Kylo’s lightsaber for the betrayal, which is a very definite death, and they changed it to this. Which is a much less definite death. Hux had to go from where he was shot to where Pryde was, and along the way he theoretically received medical care. But what kind of medical care is a bandage wrapped around the OUTSIDE of your pant leg? My thought - hastily applied by Hux himself who knows nothing of medicine outside of what few holodramas he might have seen, and done in a hurry because he had to conceal that he’d also taken the time to pick up some body armor for the inevitable firing squad. He’d just have to pray there were no head shots. Best way to guarantee that was to confront Pryde directly with a bad excuse and hope Pryde was as summary in his treatment of Hux as he was with Poe/Finn/Chewie. Which he was.

sunangelflowers:

ITA with each word.

huxismyman:

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker spoilers!

Let’s talk about our boi General Hux.

・The first scene, the meeting where Hux shoots daggers at Pryde. That look. It’s scary.

・The way Hux looks at him AGAIN when Pryde says “it’ll fix the errors of The Starkiller”. He would pretty much end Pryde’s whole bloodline, if he had the chance.

・Kylo sensing unease about his appearance, by Hux. Hux getting awkward, but hiding it. “…. About the mask? No, sir. Well done” *uneasiness intensifies*

・He hates Pryde so fucking much

・"Should we blow up the planet-“ Hux gets interrupted by Kylo’s finger. His goddamned finger. Hux’s face in this scene is just… sad.

・Hux is very exhausted at this point. Just let him sleep.

・But he looks handsome as fuck. I’d totally hit that. Just sayin’.

・He has to force himself to respect Pryde, calling him by his rank. ’Allegiant General’- which is a rank similar to that of Grand Marshal, the one Hux has always aspired to become. This SUCKS. Big time.

・Hux’s hair is almost, almost ruined when the beast Chewie roars loudly. Thanks to hair gel. Hux feels embarrassed.

・Can we take a moment to talk about Hux’s uniform? His thin waist, long legs, clean polished boots, and- the way his uniform coat moves around his butt. His pants are less ‘floofy’ than before.

・His hair. That’s it.

・The look he gives Poe, Finn and Chewie when Pryde leaves after ordering Hux to eliminate them. That. Damn. Look.

・Here comes the scene. And, the fact that Hux managed to shoot three-fucking-stormtroopers in almost two seconds. That’s some big dick energy right there.

・"I’m the spy” One of the most shocking and appalling scenes EVER. Hux’s body language and tone showed panic and also the fact that he was done with the First Order.

・He opens the door for the rebels, and falls after Finn shoots him in the leg- when he asked to be shot in the arm due to suspiciousness. His little run before he opens the door. He looks so tall in his uniform.

・"I don’t care if you win, I need Kylo Ren to lose" D A M N. No words.

・The blaster shot didn’t seem to cause him much discomfort. Maybe he’s numb to any sort of pain. He just lies there, expressing his disgust and hate towards his Supreme Leader.

・Hux literally saved the Resistance, the one thing he swore to destroy in order to rule the galaxy. But for now, he was done. Especially, done with Kylo Ren.

・He’s now with his officers, Pryde in front, his injured leg wrapped with a bandage with a blood stain on it. He has this stick in his hand for support during walking. He tries to reason his injury and the fact that the rebels got away.

・The next thing we know, he’s shot fatally in the abdomen, by one of his possible-abusers, and his body slides backwards due to the impact of the blaster. The entire bridge stares in complete shock.

・Referring to the last point, Hux knew Pryde for decades, Pryde was Brendol Hux’s, and Martelle Hux’s (Armitage Hux’s stepmother) friend. And as a fact, Brendol Hux abused Armitage Hux both physically and psychologically, both in public and private. And Martelle hated Armitage more than Brendol did. Brendol and his friends used to abuse Armitage, as far as I know.

・And from there, Hux is not seen anywhere. The First Order collapses, and the Final Order, the sith fleet comes into action- which is gone later anyway.

Anyways, I wanted to say that I absolutely hated the way Hux was treated in TROS. JJ and Disney built a good character with a twisted backstory and a unique background, and hyped it up for a while. And when they realised that they fucked the character up, they use him as a comic relief, a plot device, and sideline him. He is also replaced with Pryde in this movie, and probably killed and then never mentioned again. He deserved a better and respectful death, a proper fight scene. He’s a fucking villain, not a puppet. I absolutely adore Domhnall Gleeson, the amount of work he put in his character is marvelous and outstanding. He should be more recognized for this.
