I wonder if it’s like the corporate equivalent of one of those “unsolved but not proven insolvable” math problems … like, this site is popular as fuck, the concept of reblogs and the streams of added commentary that develop are clearly loved, if someone ever figures out how to monetize it properly they’ll find themselves sitting on a gold mine … but in the meantime nobody knows how to get the money out of it so they’re just passing it around and looking at it and trying a few things like it’s the Horrible Goose from the untitled goose game and they’re trying to figure out how to make it lay the golden eggs while it runs away with an IPO in its beak.

A network or service that fails to make enough money for its shareholders generally gets closed down within 2-3 years.
Tumblr lost Yahoo a billion dollars and it’s still around.
