Today I was pondering over why lightsabers seem to be a primarily Force user only weapon in SW, and inadvertently came to a realisation about why Sith torture their crystals…
Then I promptly used it to make
generallkenobi sad. XD
Ok so I decided I may as well share it all.
Like I said, it started with me wondering about lightsabers. Sure blasters are easier to use, and have some level of distance advantage, but lightsabers are DEADLY in the hands of a Jedi/Sith. So why are they the only ones that use them?
There’s no inherent impediment stopping a non Force sensitive person from using one, see the Darksaber, but they just don’t…
The most compelling reason I’ve seen out there is that lightsabers really are insanely dangerous. They can cut through almost anything, weigh almost nothing (yes yes gyroscopic stabilisers help but still) and generally are the kind of weapon that gives no second chances. Even Jedi initiate don’t get them until they’ve had years of training not just in fighting but also in sensing their surroundings.
Which brings us to the second point. When a Jedi builds their lightsaber they start by finding “their” crystal. It’s not like there’s anything stopping them from using another Jedi’s lightsaber - again we’ve seen it done. But it seems to be important - they can still fight effectively with someone else’s lightsaber but they’re never quite as confident as with their own…
There’s also the importance of they place on the weapons themselves “Your lightsaber is your life” and all that. For Jedi the lightsaber is inextricably linked to the Jedi who made it. It’s a reflection of their very self.
Putting it all together, my theory is that:
lightsabers can be used by anyone - but having the Force allows you to use them safely, because you have a constant sense of where they are/will be etc
when you have a crystal inside the lightsaber that resonates with you it goes one step further and literally feels like a natural extension of your body. Which probably also makes it easier to manipulate with the Force too come to think of it…
It explains why Jedi are so deadly and why crystal selection is so important. When they talk about customisation of the lightsaber it’s not just the physical components of they need to consider.
So what does this have to do with the Sith?
New Canon always bothered me a bit with the whole “torturing the crystal” thing - yes it’s very aesthetic but why do all that just for the red glow?
But if true lightsaber mastery involves the crystal resonating with its wielder then it makes perfect sense why they go to the effort.
Those crystals are hurting, broken, alone and screaming in pain and tortured agony.
Just like the soul of a Sith.
Uhm…. excuse me, ma’am. But you’ve delivered these horrible feelings to the wrong person and I’d like you to take them back now. Thank you.
Don’t listen to Fishy! This is excellent in the worst possible way.
Seriously, is this headcanon available for rent?
So I wrote a whole fucking essay of a response to this post and tuMBLR FKIN DELETED THE WHOLE THING so now I’m pissed but THANK THE GODS I’m used to mobile tumblr’s usual shit and saved screenshots, enjoy:
Off topic - I just wanted to add that i feel your pain. I learned that every time i want to post something longer than 10 lines i should printscreen it first in case that app loses the data
As for lightsabers themselves, when it comes to sith crystals, there are two methods how they obtain them. One is the mentioned bleeding. They just take any crystal available and change it through meditation/bleeding to fit them specificaly, adding all that hurt and passion and fear and hatered to help them feel those feelings during fight for better flow. The second method is makin synthetised crystal from scratch during meditation. They literally use extreme heat and basic elements then meditate to create the crystal itself and again, add all those agresive emotions to it. And that’s why all such crystals are red - they are simply all chaneled in the same way.
I mean, with jedi, those crystals which are naturally chaneled towards active fight, swift decisions and straight mind usualy are of blue hue (as a beautiful example there’s Anakin) and those which are oriented towards keeping people safe, planing and overall using more brain and less muscles are of green hue (Obi-Wan). In legends we can also see yellow coloured sabers where users are more of a neutral sentinels than fighters for whichever side. Also, purple seems to be a colour for those who are somewhere in the middle between light and dark like Mace Windu who ocassionaly taps into the dark side, because when fighting, he resonates more with passion than with usual jedi serenity.
So you see, exceptions do exist and each crystal is slightly different than the rest and they work the beat with THEIR force users, but similar personalities tend to chanel their kyber in similar ways, thus our well known colour distinction of green/blue for good guys vs red for bad guys.
