One day over breakfast.
“My homeschool discussion pod-mates think it’s weird that I call you Captain and not Mom or Aunt or something,” Armitage says, stirring his porridge.
“Well. I am your Captain and not your mother or aunt.” Rae shrugs before stirring her own breakfast.
“That’s what I said. They still said it’s weird.”
“And what did you say to that?”
“I told them they don’t know anything about it and that we should get back to the assigned topic.”
Rae hmmms and takes a sip of caf. “So why are you asking me about it?”
“Because. Maybe it is a little weird. Not bad weird. Just odd weird.”
“I don’t understand.” No lie. And she’s not sure where he’s going with this. “I’m not your mother. Or your aunt. Or any other familial relation. I am your captain.”
“I know. It’s just…” he trails off. After a minute, he starts eating his porridge.
She leans forward, trying to catch his eyes. “You can ask or tell me anything. You know that.”
“I know. I just. I don’t know what I want to ask. Or say. Not exactly.”
“That’s okay. Take some more time to think about it. If your podmates give you any grief about it, tell them to stop. If they don’t, let me know. Okay?”
“Okay,” he says, getting up from the table. “I’m gonna.. go run or something.”
“One last thing?”
He turns around in the hatchway. “Yeah?”
“If you were my kid, I’d be so very proud of you.”
Armitage ducks his head, trying to hide a small smile, then turns back and leaves.
Rae watches him go. He’s grown so much in so many ways. She sometimes wonders what would have happened if they’d gone on to the Unknown Regions instead of running away. If Armitage had been under Brendol’s thumb. If she and Brendol had joined the other fleeing Imperials. She remembers the lost boys and shudders.
She made the right decision to give everything up. She got so much back in return.
