but what if there’s only mutual sexual tension a few days out of each month?

Then it’s a bromance, not gay

but what if your own character growth centers around internally accepting that your camping buddy’s gender is fundamentally irreconcilable with your understanding of a fixed gender or sexual binary and the only reason you don’t have sex is because confronting the alien nature of each other’s bodies would be kind of depressing in the current situation?

What if your character growth only reaches the point of “I loved them,” when it’s already too late because they have been suddenly and pointlessly slain?
