The way I see it there are are four things “the Rise of Skywalker” could mean.

It could mean Luke Skywalker
it could mean one of the other characters we know is actually a Skywalker
it could mean a new Skywalker character is introduced
or, I suppose, it could mean Anakin Skywalker.

Options two and three seem pretty unlikely to me.  Option 1 seems probable but begs the question how/why would a character “rise” after they’ve already died and completed their story arc.  The obvious answer is that they’d be acting as a Force ghost, which Anakin already has been introduced as.  I’d have to say option 4 is the most interesting to me.

What do you think?  Who is the Skywalker that will rise?

It may be more metaphorical.

Skywalker will become a legend, a concept.

Today we might refer to a very ambitious person as “Napoleonic”.

Or a brilliant writer as “Shakespearean”.

Maybe Skywalker will become similar.

An idea, transcending flesh.

“Skywalker” actually does already have a meaning though

https://screenrant.com/star-wars-skywalker-name-meaning/

Basically, you know how Jedi can block blaster bolts and stuff? That’s cause they have very split second precognition, where they see right now and slightly into the future, letting them block stuff. In canon, it’s very dangerous to enter hyperspace outside of established hyperspace lanes because you could crash into literally anything (another ship, a planet, a star, etc). Jedi, however, are able to do this because of their precognition and ability to sense that danger and avoid it. This is known as “Skywalking”, and those able to do it are known as “Skywalkers”.

Does that make sense for the title here? No. But it does already have a meaning.

My good friend Noah released his binder drafting and sewing tutorial this week! He doesn’t have a Tumblr, so I said I would post it for him.

“This digital drafting tutorial guides you to create a custom chest binder based on your own measurements. The easy to follow tutorial includes instructions for how to create a crop top length binder with several style and finishing options. The two binder styles addressed in the tutorial are most similar in fit to Underworks and GC2B binders. An add-on for full length binders will become available in the future.”

It’s taken him over a year to design this tutorial, and it’s really thoughtfully written. The tutorial requires some knowledge of sewing stretch knits, but I think it’s doable if you have never drafted before. It’s on sale for the month of April for $10 usd, and then will go up to $15.

Check it out here, and please share!

There just are straight up not that many DIY binder tutorials in the world, and a lot of them are badly constructed. I’m Insta-friends with Noah, and I’ve watched his process as he created this binder AND had other people test-sew it so it could be the best it could be! Definitely worth your money! :D

Sewing friends take a look!

permian-tropos:

all of the other things that are hype about the trailer, I acknowledge to be hype, I think it’s very sparse and doesn’t give away much

- Kylo fighting Rey on Jakku with a TIE fighter, if we assume he is fighting her and it’s not some really elaborate shenanigan but let’s assume, is fascinating because we don’t know what’s going on there, if Rey is getting a surprise drop on him or if he really is trying to run her over in his ship. it comes off like a showdown at high noon kind of thing, or like a joust. it’s almost like they’ve agreed to fight and the terms were you get to pick one weapon and Kylo picks a whole ass ship. I don’t know what kind of shenanigan it could be if they’re working together because what would a maneuver like that achieve? so yeah my assumption is either Rey is doing a surprise attack or they’re dueling

- I think they’re going to maybe find the Observatory on Jakku and learn that Palp had a secret plan, and then head to Endor to dig around in the old man’s grave. maybe the Sentinel droids will make an appearance — they have his face and voice and can deliver the trailer cackle but they’re not literally resurrections of Palp. in that way, it’s not actually “surprise Palp is here” but using something that’s been in the EU for a while

- Jannah looks like Lando’s daughter from the outfit alone

- if Kylo Ren is fighting the KoR in that scene he’s advancing alongside a group of regular looking troopers marching like troopers do so no I don’t think that’s him defecting it looks like he’s leading an invasion force

- I think the scene of Finn and Poe on the speeder is them racing towards the Observatory on Jakku because I think they’re setting off old land mines we know were set up there. they’re being chased by what seem to be FO speeders so it seems less likely the explosions are coming from the FO since dropping bombs on their own troops isn’t very effective

- it will be amazing to see Rey scavenging the Death Star like finally her skills are plot relevant also JJ knows that I am bought and sold with those vistas with Empire ruins he’s just milking it and I’m not complaining

- the arc of idk some kind of artifact hunt to uncover an ancient mystery, even with all the fan service, is legitimately a formula departure. if this movie ends up with a lot of familiar imagery but a completely unique plot structure that would be amazing. someone said this has Raiders of the Lost Ark vibes and if it’s like that I’m all in for it

- that would make my recent archaeology SW game pitch remarkably prescient

- iirc Lando was actually the one who had the Imperialis data that had the clue about Palp picking Galli up from Jakku? and it was sliced by Swift and given to Sloane? I’d have to check but if Lando has those deets that would rule

Some of y’all don’t seem to understand that you can respect a character’s complexity and recognize them as well written, and still not like them. And not like them for no other reason than they are just not your cup of tea. Like you can see a character and think “wow this character has come so far and is extremely well developed. This is a powerful, intelligent, strong, character who has both relatable flaws and redeeming good qualities. They have a deep effect on the plot line and the other characters and the story would not be the same with out them. I’m so glad a character like this exists for people to relate to and love on. But damn, they annoy the shit out of me.”

thisdayinherstory:

On This Day in Herstory, April 12th 1913, Keiko Fukuda, a Japanese American martial artist, the highest-ranked female judoka in history, the last surviving student of the founder of judo, and a pioneer of women’s judo, was born in Tokyo, Japan.

As a child Keiko Fukuda (福田 敬子 Fukuda Keiko) was trained in the arts of calligraphy, flower arrangement, and the tea ceremony, and other pursuits typical for women in Japan at the time. Around this time, while she was quite young, her father died, leaving her mother with two children, Keiko and her brother. Despite her traditional upbringing, she felt drawn to judo, because her grandfather had been a samurai and master of jujutsu, he also taught jujutsu to Kanō Jigorō, founder of judo. One day, Keiko’s mother took her to watch a judo training session, and a few months later she began to train herself in the art. Her mother and brother were very supportive of her decision to train, thinking that she was meet and marry a judo master. In 1935, she was personally invited by the founder of judo to study with him; this was highly unusual for the time, but he did it as a sign of respect for her grandfather. She was one of only 24 women who trained in his studio. Around this time she reportedly refused to enter into an arranged marriage because it would have ended her training.

Keiko was only 4’11”, and weighed less than 100lbs, despite this, she excelled at judo and became an instructor in 1937. She also earned a degree in Japanese literature from Showa Women’s University around this time. In 1953 she was promoted to the rank of 5th dan in judo. Later that year she traveled to the US at the invitation of a judo club in Oakland, California, she stayed for over two years, before returning to Japan. She traveled to the US again in 1966 and gave seminars in California; one of these seminars was at Mills College, who immediately offered her a teaching position, which she accepted, teaching from 1967 to 1978. At that time, she was one of only four women in the world ranked at 5th dan in judo. In November 1972, Keiko became the first woman promoted to 6th dan. The next year she published Born for the Mat: A Kodokan kata textbook for women, an instructional book for women about the kata (patterns) of Kodokan judo. In 1974, she established the annual Joshi Judo Camp to give female judo practitioners the chance to train together.

Keiko continued to rise through the ranks of judo, and held the rank of 9th dan, the second-highest in judo, from two organizations; in July 2011, she was given the rank of 10th dan. She continued to teach, host the annual Fukuda Invitational Kata Championships, and teach at the annual Joshi Judo Camp until her death. She established the Keiko Fukuda Judo Scholarship to help encourage women to continue their formal training in judo. Her personal motto was: “Tsuyoku, Yasashiku, Utsukushiku” (“Be strong, be gentle, be beautiful, in mind, body, and spirit”). Keiko Fukuda died on February 9th 2013, in San Francisco, California; she was 99 years old.

Microsoft has a DRM-locked ebook store that isn’t making enough money,
so they’re shutting it down and taking away every book that every one of
its customers acquired effective July 1.

Customers will receive refunds.

This puts the difference between DRM-locked media and unencumbered media
into sharp contrast. I have bought a lot of MP3s over the years,
thousands of them, and many of the retailers I purchased from are long
gone, but I still have the MP3s. Likewise, I have bought many books from
long-defunct booksellers and even defunct publishers, but I still own
those books.

When I was a bookseller, nothing I could do would result in your losing
the book that I sold you. If I regretted selling you a book, I didn’t
get to break into your house and steal it, even if I left you a cash
refund for the price you paid.

People sometimes treat me like my decision not to sell my books through
Amazon’s Audible is irrational (Audible will not let writers or
publisher opt to sell their books without DRM), but if you think Amazon
is immune to this kind of shenanigans, you are sadly mistaken. My books
matter a lot to me. I just paid $8,000 to have a container full of books
shipped from a storage locker in the UK to our home in LA so I can be
closer to them. The idea that the books I buy can be relegated to some
kind of fucking software license is the most grotesque and awful thing I
can imagine: if the publishing industry deliberately set out to destroy
any sense of intrinsic, civilization-supporting value in literary
works, they could not have done a better job.

https://boingboing.net/2019/04/02/burning-libraries.html

If you’ve got an ereader and want to actually own your books, I heartily recommend using cailbre to scrape the DRM off and so you can backup the files.

100% agree on all of this! Commanding a navy is not really his thing and he doesn’t have a lot of real combat experience because he uses simulators (that he designed btw).

However I think he still did great on Crait considering the circumstances. Remember that the First Order had lost most of its fleet, a lot of troops died, a lot of weapons/vehicles were destroyed and of course kylo didn’t want to listen to hux and cooperate with him during the assault.

All of this honestly. He may be a genius, but navy is not in his field of expertise. Crait went better because they were on the ground. As you said, he’s changed quite a lot about trooper training program since he took over after his father, simulatuins included, so naturally he knew what he was doing. If Kylo didn’t stop him to fight with Luke (who wasn’t even there technicaly), the whole saga would end right then and there.

Also let’s not forget that Hux saved Kylo 3 times already! In the new upcoming Resistance comic, on Starkiller Base and when he called Kylo to come back to the fleet! (Well this one is debatable but kylo was clearly not thinking clearly and he was shaken by his mother apparent death, so he could have been killed like the other pilots!) And Kyko is not even grateful for that…

Ha! I would like to think that the writers thought “Hux is better at commanding a ground engagement because he’s been writing simulated ground engagements for his troopers for years,” and that was why they had Crait go so much better for the FO. I suspect what they were actually thinking was “we need things to go badly for the Resistence here to ramp up the tension and give Luke his big moment.”But it works with the back story even so :)

filigranka reblogged your post and added: “huxsmug: grey-jedi-enters-the-game: huxsmug: galadhir: …”

This all still leaves with the need to explain why…

Wasn’t Starkiller Base mainly defended by safeguards that were built in to the machinery? Like the oscillator could only be shut down from the inside, and no one could get in from the outside short of pulling a maneuver that was thought to be impossible? That’s further proof of good engineering.

But yeah, why they are having their top engineer leading their navy rather than leaving him with a university full of eager minds on a highly fortified planet/ship somewhere in the Unknown Regions, where he can churn out new laws-of-hyperspace defying inventions on a more regular basis, idk. Seems a huge waste of resources.

As does killing him, to be frank. They should stick him in a comfy jail cell and have him create useful things that are not weapons instead.

it rly is weird how theres this culture in progressive spaces where like you can be as mean, as CRUEL even, as you want as long as youre not being explicitly bigoted towards any marginalized group of people and still be seen as a really good person with good morals who nobody is allowed to have beef with bc theyve never done anything racist or homophobic

this culture enables actual abuse. ive seen progressives engage in gaslighting, guilt-tripping, stalking, harassment, witch hunts, death threats, rape threats, and suicide baiting. these abusers are protected by the idea that marginalized people cannot be abusive and that any criticism of the behavior is  “problematic” or tone-policing. the behavior likely emerged as a reaction to tone-policing, respectability politics and moderate liberalism, swinging the pendulum to the opposite extreme of aggressive callout culture and groupthink. i also think many progressives are marginalized + disempowered in mainstream society and cope by replicating the same patterns of abuse in a microcosm where they have clout

Addendum: you can also be horribly bigoted toward other marginalized people, so long as you use the ‘correct’ language and attack a marginalized group that is already a popular target of lateral / intra-community aggression (or, as I like to call it ‘I’m too chickenshit to do anything that requires effort or sacrifice, so my activism is screaming at other marginalized people and blaming them for all my issues’).

This is very visible on Tumblr, with a rotating cadre of people (bisexuals, pansexuals, ace/aro people, nonbinary people, intersex people, trans people who don’t subscribe to transmedicalist stances) being the revolving Targets du Jour for some truly vicious hate and smear campaigns, by individuals *who should know better* (but don’t, because they enjoy the thrill of soft, easily reachable targets upon which to vent the rage caused by non-marginalized society). Fundamentally, this is what happens when one’s activism revolves around seeking VENGEANCE (and a completely misplaced one at that!) rather than justice.

Good post but I wanna add another example: people are literally allowed and even encouraged to be as mean-spirited and cruel towards people who exhibit autistic traits, so long as they never actually use the word “autistic.”

Okay but can you imagine how frustrating being a wizard in dnd would be. Like. You spend so long, maybe even years, studying magic, reading books and working hard be well versed in magic and end up really smart.

Then you meet the other spellcasters and they’re just like

Cleric: I believe in God so I’m magic.

Warlock: I just had to ask cthulu for magic and they said yes.

Sorcerers: I was born with magic.

Druid: I just chilled in the forest and got magic.

Bard: I play the fiddle lmao

wizard: takes months to memorize a gesture and an incantation that bends the fabric of reality

bard: doot doot magic flute

I mean, I see your point, but it also takes literally years to learn to play an instrument well. If you’ve then got to get so good with it that you can perform literal magic…? That’s got to be a seven year course of study at the least.

natalie portman radiates such a terrifying energy i can’t describe it….. it’s not exactly evil but it’s not warm either…. i feel like she could unhinge her jaw and drag me into the ocean like a kraken but she wouldn’t bc it’s undignified

Wanna know why?

“Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman told the crowd at Saturday’s Women’s March in downtown Los Angeles that she experienced what she calls “sexual terrorism” as a 13-year-old after the release of the film The Professional.

Portman described her pride and excitement in releasing the film, only to encounter sexually explicit messages both directed toward her and made about her.

”I excitedly opened my first fan mail to read a rape fantasy that a man had written me,” she recalled. “A countdown was started on my local radio show to my 18th birthday, euphemistically the date that I would be legal to sleep with. Movie reviewers talked about my budding breasts in reviews.”

The experience, she said, changed the way she expressed herself publicly, in order to limit the ways she could be objectified by others.

”I understood very quickly, even as a 13-year-old, that if I were to express myself sexually, I would feel unsafe,” she said. “And that men would feel entitled to discuss and objectify my body to my great discomfort. So I quickly adjusted my behavior. I rejected any role that even had a kissing scene and talked about that choice deliberately in interviews. I emphasized how bookish I was and how serious I was. And I cultivated an elegant way of dressing. I built a reputation for basically being prudish, conservative, nerdy, serious, in an attempt to feel that my body was safe and that my voice would be listened to.”

Video of the speech here: https://www.vox.com/2018/1/21/16917130/natalie-portman-womens-march

I support Natalie Portman unhinging her jaw and dragging every last man who made her feel this way into the deep like a kraken.

With the seeming confirmation of Palpatine’s history of cloning from older materials, and the incredible absence of Hux from the trailer, I got to thinking.

Why was Brendol Hux so uncaring, but dedicated to his son in the canon novels?

Maybe it was because his “son” was actually his mission.

Because maybe Hux is a Palpatine clone…

He would be the right age.

And he looks similar enough…
