Idk man I very much disagree with the assertation that Crowley doesn’t eat, as any one who eats fast can confirm, this is EXACTLY what it’s like to get lunch with a slow eating friend

aziraphale: takes his time savoring individual flavors, carefully scooping just the right ratio of whipped cream and raspberry filling for every bite. Very tidy, napkin at hand, no crumbs on table.

crowley: scarfs down an entire slice of devils food cake in .03 seconds

#Crowley: *unhinges jaw slides contents of entire plate down throat*#Meanwhile Aziraphale is still working out what fork he wants to use

Plot twist: this is what Aziraphale really meant when he said “you go too fast for me, Crowley.”

fic where aziraphale and crowley keep in touch with both adam and warlock while they grow up, popping in and out of their lives every so often for special occasions or for no reason at all, offering endless support and love. they’re uncles, sort of, to adam, who if he tried to remember about armageddon and the angel/demon thing probably would, but doesn’t, and so grows up an utterly normal boy; they stay nanny ashtoreth and brother francis for warlock, to give him that bit of stability and continuity that he so often lacks with his family. when warlock finally has it out with his parents over their distance and their lack of warmth, he ends up staying for a weekend on nanny ashtoreth’s sofa, staying up late and watching old movies and talking about family and love and support, about choosing to be the sort of person you want despite it all. when adam is trying to get the courage to come out as gay, he spends a week in london, helping aziraphale around the shop, talking to him about everything and anything and fear and courage and bravery and love. when adam and warlock finally meet in university, they’re beautiful and kind and have worked really hard to live the lives they want to live, and of course they’re drawn to each other, and they start dating, the both of them committed to living these beautiful kind lives, the both of them finding it so easy to support each other the same way they’ve always been supported. they stay up late and talk about their childhoods, and a pair of uncles, and a nanny and a gardener, and never put the pieces together. it doesn’t matter. they’re happy.

when they decide to get married, crowley and aziraphale get invitations both as uncle crowley and uncle aziraphale, and as nanny ashtoreth and brother francis. cue rom com level shenanigans as they try to go to the wedding as both, ultimately resulting in adam and warlock - very surprised now to find that they’ve been telling each other stories about the same people all this time - giving them back the acceptance and support they’ve poured out over the years: adam and warlock love them, the way they are, without disguise. it doesn’t matter that they’re not really uncles, or nannies, or gardeners. it doesn’t matter that they’re an angel and a demon and aren’t really human at all.

it matters that they’re family. that’s more than enough.

I bet there’s a lot of one star Yelp reviews “A.Z. Fell and Co. Bookshop,” like:

“Is this store ever actually open?”

“By some miracle the store was open when I went in. It smells really bad? I don’t know why. Incredibly dusty and disorganized. Could not find any staff member when I wanted to buy a book. Ended up giving up and going home.”

“Unparalleled collection but awful, awful staff. Tried to purchase a 16th century book of prophecy I’ve been trying to get my hands on for years. Shopkeeper treated me like I was trying to steal it and then refused to let me purchase it, while casting some very nasty aspirations on my character based on how I handled the spines of early modern volumes when taking them off of a shelf. Will NOT be coming back.”

“Went in to browse. Two very odd men in suits came in and loudly discussed needing to buy pornography. The shopkeeper took them to the backroom and then after the two men left (without a book, mind you), the owner kicked us out and closed. I think this bookshop is a front for the mafia.”

“There is a large snake roaming around the store.”

It’s honestly both very sweet and very metal that Aziraphale and Crowley both chose to manifest as middle-aged from day one

They could have been shredded twenty-five year olds for eternity but without even giving it a test run were both just like, eugh no thank you who wants to deal with that

Given every option they both chose to present as the age at which the maximum percentage of people would leave them alone to indulge their weird-dad hobbies in peace and frankly it’s inspiring

Is it just me or is the “body positive” movement not working? Like at all?

Other people have said this before/better, but the problem was presenting all women as beautiful as opposed to eliminating the need for women to be beautiful

It’s not working because the focus is STILL on trying to view yourself as attractive no matter how you look, instead of (as stated above) eliminating the need to feel “attractive.“

The body positive movement SHOULD be focused on bodily autonomy and taking care of your health. The best way to be “positive” toward your body is to treat it well, not by repeating some “I am beautiful” mantra over and over. You don’t have to be pretty. You don’t have to see yourself as pretty. Others don’t have to see you as pretty. PRETTY IS NOT IMPORTANT. Pretty is not your worth. You exist for you, not for anyone else’s gaze.

If you would report an undocumented immigrant to ICE you would have reported me to the Nazis and I don’t fucking trust you

A note:

I live in a state where you “have to” report anyone you suspect of being undocumented (that wonderful hellhole of Arizona). Now in practice this law has fallen far short, thank goodness. But if you live in such a place and they start enforcing it, here is how you get around it:

Assume everyone who doesn’t speak English is visiting.

Never ask about their job, because if they tell you they work here then you know they’re not visiting. You see them a lot for several weeks or months? Hm. Someone in the family must be ill. That’s terribly tough. They always dress in old, ratty laborers’ clothes? I feel you, my dude, I can’t afford new clothes either, and my dad has the fashion sense of an aardvark, so sometimes it’s not even about “affording” them. They say they’ve been here for years? You must have misunderstood. Spanish isn’t your first language, after all. First and last name? It never came up, or you don’t recall–you meet a lot of people.

And then, if you’re asked: no, you haven’t seen anyone residing illegally in the United States. Just people visiting.

Very good very important addition

Essentially, this is the civil society version of a work-to-rule strike.

Don’t do more than is expressly asked of you, and do what you are asked with such an intense attention to protocol that not asking you at all becomes more effective than even bothering.

In this case:

“Have you seen an illegal immigrant?”

“Could you describe an illegal immigrant, officer?”

*officer describes a person who is in the country without appropriate paperwork, or who has crossed the border illegally*

“No, sir, I haven’t seen any illegal immigrant.”

And this is correct. You have NOT seen an illegal immigrant, because you have no way of knowing if Jose Fulano is here legally or not. And since you can’t see his paperwork (or lack thereof), and did not personally see him cross the border illegally, you are only answering precisely the question asked.

I’m not American, and I have like, three followers, but this is important.

So, I’m a lawyer, who deals with immigration though does not specialize in it. But here’s the thing(s):

1) Even someone who’s working could be here on a migrant (or other sort of) visa (hey, there are a few thousand per year, and *someone*’s got to get them, right?) or could be waiting for their case to resolve in immigration court, after having come to America to join a born or naturalized American family member.

2) Even people who are working improperly could have come into the country legally – and just overstayed their visa or be violating the conditions of their visa, and you have no idea what the niggly little regulations that govern that might be.

3) If a law enforcement officer asks you about a neighbor/friend/etc., take this moment to remind them that, unlike them, you cannot ask a random person off the street for their ID and be entitled to a response.

4) Even if someone has told you that they are undocumented, you still don’t know, do you? Humans lie all the time. How could you know for sure? You can’t, because they can’t prove that they have a lack of papers. Just because you haven’t seen papers doesn’t mean they don’t exist!

5) Don’t ever talk to cops in general. Why are you talking to a cop? Stop that, as soon as it is safe and feasible.

Kylo Ren: And they were never home! They never paid any attention to me, always too busy with their jobs! I mean, I practically raised myself!

Hux, flipping through a magazine and drinking wine: Tragic.

//Hmmm, I have a few thoughts about this (gonna be long, sorry).

Okay, comparing the traumas of these two characters is funny at first but if you think about it, Ben/Kylo is very sensitive and he also has the Force and this means he sensed what others thought and felt about him which is crucial to understand him and the way he suffers all the time.

In comprasion Hux suffered so much more at the hands of his own father and we know it because it’s been canonically stated but Kylo and his childhood is foggy at best. What we know is that he loathes the Falcon, didn’t ‘hate’ his father and the deed shattered him and he didn’t kill his mom when he had the chance. Han leaving with the Falcon way too often and Ben being afraid he’d never come back, blaming himself because he thinks it’s his fault his parents didn’t get along (children blame themselves for parents separating, it’s a fact), and his parents look at him as if he was a timed bomb… not getting help when you needed it desperately and you just wish your father at least bloody stayed around and helped you. But no. He rather ran away from the problems.

Shatters me.

Because I know how does it feel. To have food, shelter, a room for yourself, but you can’t talk to your relatives about how lost you actually feel, how shitty it is that nobody sees behind the past you’re not even responsible for.

Sometimes ignorance is worse than anything else. Sometimes a kid does something bad so just for once his parents would finally pay attention and reach out to him. Sometimes being yelled at is better than to being ignored. I know it is.

Kylo searched for a father figure in his entire life just as Hux did, look how they’re both trying to get Snoke’s attention and approval in TFA. It’s painful to know that they both searched in the wrong direction, and the fact that Kylo couldn’t connect correctly with Luke or his parents and he let Snoke, a complete abusive asshat twist him as he wished. Snoke made him kill Han, but he has to deal with the consequences alone, and he’s chastised for feeling conflicted over the deed.

Punished for being in doubt if he did the good thing, over and over and over again.

On the other hand, Hux decided himself that it was bloody enough and no, he would not let his father terrorize him anymore. Which is a huge thing. Abused people are often too afraid to step up. I know, I was there, too. And I’m glad Hux did. (I never would’ve killed my own dad, even if I reconsidered, but, I’m still glad he made this important step.) It’s a real shame he was forced to serve Snoke who’s just as bad, and because of mind probing, even worse, than Brendol. When he had his scenes in TLJ and he was supposed to be ‘laughed at’, I sat stiffly in my seat and thought that Hux being tortured and humiliated is not funny at all. Because it was proven to me that he was not out of the loop of Hell.

Then the throne room scene. It’s so funny because I love both Hux and Kylo but I actually urged Hux in mind, kill him, kill him or he’s going to be the next to torture you and you can’t let that happen again, just bloody protect yourself, do it!

And when he ran out of time and my fears were justified I’m not lying, I cried. I hated how he got Force choked and I hated how Kylo threw him against the wall. He was a sassy butt, yes, but he didn’t deserve it.

So… just a final thought. Just because one person is in a shittier situation… it doesn’t mean that someone who has 'smaller’ problems can’t suffer, too. Because it’s not true. It was shit for Kylo, and it was shit for Hux. Just different kind of shit.

But it doesn’t make the 'lesser’ shit 'no’ shit.

In 1941, Swiss engineer George de Mestral noticed after a
hunting trip that burrs from burdock plants stuck to his pants and his
dog’s fur.

He took the seed and looked at them through a microscope to find that this seed
attaches to animal fur via the hooks on its surface to improve
distribution.

Source: All of Nature on Blogspot

These hooks would latch onto anything loop-shaped, such as the fibers in his pants and his dog’s tangled fur. This inspired him to come up with the ‘Velcro’.

Velcro is a bio-mimicry of this burrs with small flexible hooks attached on its surface to attach to fluffy surfaces.

Although it goes by the name Velcro the generic name is a  hook-and-loop fastener)

And depending on the load that needs to be held there are different types of hooks that are available:

The sound that the velcro makes when you rip it apart is oddly satisfying. It is made when the loops are ripped apart from the hooks.

It was always in my head that the hooks or the loops would break whenever you would rip it apart. But turns out, they are extremely flexible.

                                                Source

For a long time I believed that this was the end of the story and that’s how far we had gone. But recently when I was trying to mount a board to the wall, I came across the 3M dual lock fasteners.

These use a mushroom shaped hook on both the sides to snap together in place.

                                                  Source

And evidently it turns out the mushroom fastener design were inspired from dragonflies who used it for stability during mating (check source video above for more).

This is great, but since this is made of plastic this surely would fail at higher temperatures. You need something robust to handle higher temperatures, and this is where the Metaklett comes into the picture:

A square metre of this fastener, called Metaklett (made of steel), is capable of supporting 35 tonnes at temperatures up to 800 ºC,  (Video)

There is something exotic in the blend of nature and technology that is manifested in the Velcro, I just cannot put my hand on what it is.

Have a great day!

soooo today hundreds of Jews blockaded an ICE detention center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. 36 were arrested. They have a legal fees fundraiser up (link) and they have a mass call to help Jews get organized against these concentration camps across the country!

TAKE ACTION: SIGN UP TO OUR MASS CALL ON MONDAY, 7/1.

Over the next two weeks, Jews are taking action across the country to shut down ICE and show that this problem is not just at the border, it’s everywhere — we need anyone and everyone to take the streets and stop business as usual. Even if you’ve never planned an action before, we will support you to get things off the ground. Join our mass call on Monday, July 1st, at 9PM EST. Even if you can’t make the call, sign up and we’ll send you everything you need to know!

This group is called Never Again Action. They are not funded by any nonprofit organization nor are they a front for anything.

I highly encourage you all, Jewish or not, to join in the call against ICE. Never again means fight back! Action=Life. Silence=Death.

just a friendly reminder that this type of rhetoric is misleading, (in my opinion, slightly antisemitic) and not the way to go about fighting religious homophobes.

religious jews still follow these laws. we dont wear clothes that have a blend of wool & linen (laws of shatnez). fresh produce in israel follows all of the agricultural laws outlined in the torah. as for some of the other laws i always see referenced: we don’t eat shellfish or pork or anything prohibited by the torah. clean-shaven men will only ever use electric razors never blades. we don’t work on the sabbath, we observe the sanctioned holy days, we believe in, love and fear God and obey God’s commandments.

personally, i find the rhetoric harmful and insulting for three reasons. one, it only works on the (very christian) premise that the torah is outdated, and that ~nobody in their right mind~ would follow those laws anymore. two, it tends to ignore the fact that lgbtq+ orthodox jews exist and have to live through the struggle of being lgbtq+ and observant, despite community backlash, severe judgement and institutionalised homophobia. and three, it gives homophobia-masked-as-religious-observance some sort of legitimacy because yeah, the rest of those laws are kept in varying degrees by millions of people.

don’t fight homophobes by saying ‘look at all of these other ridiculous laws’ – those laws matter to a lot of people, including me, a jewish lesbian. instead, say ‘do not stand idly by your fellow’s blood (leviticus 19:16)’, ‘whoever humiliates another in public forfeits their place in the World to Come (avot 3:11), ‘one shall
not say to a person words that hurt them or cause them pain against which they
cannot stand (sefer hachinuch, mitzvah 338)’, ‘do not do to others that which you would not wish them to do to you. this is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary (gemara shabbat 31a)’, and what is perhaps one of my favorite verses in tanach, ‘to what is good and just is more preferable to God than sacrifice (proverbs 21:3)’.

oh, and here’s a good starting point for educating your religious friends and family members.

headcanon - Aziraphale is RESPONSIBLE for Dames being part of pantomimes

BUT THEN

ULTRA HEADCANON - AZIRAPHALE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PANTOMIMES

because he got overexcited about audience participation after Shakespeare encouraged it that time and started shouting traditional pantomime things at other performances over the years (’it’s behind you!’ - ‘oh no it isn’t!’ - ‘oh yes it is!’ etc.)

and maybe occasionally other members of the audience (usually kids, or drunks) would join in and they and Zira would have a whale of a time during the show (before being firmly shushed or asked to leave anyway)

then after a while a few bright playwrights realised that maybe they could write specifically FOR that kind of audience and BANG! Panto was a thing

(…how did Zira end up acting in them? um… well he went to performances ofc, and maybe one time the performance was about to be cancelled because one of the actresses was sick, and Zira saw all the excited children waiting in line to see the show and swooped in insisting HE could play the role aND THAT was how the Dame tradition started??

…Crowley pretends to think the whole thing is terribly embarrassing and just like Zira’s magic shows…but actually he gets a bit soft seeing how much enjoyment kids get out of pantos and approves of the fluidity of gender involved in casting/performances and maybe, secretly, always sort of wanted to get involved….

and maybe Zira suspects this, but knows Crowley will insist the traditional fairytale-based pantomime stories aren’t ‘cool’ enough for him - but then Rocky Horror becomes a thing…. and Zira manages to get the role of Narrator and has Crowley help him prepare by running lines with him and ofc Crowley gets a bit more into THIS audience participation performance and…. idk…. maybe one night something happens to the actor playing Frank N Furter, AND his understudy… nothing BAD, just, they can’t perform… and Zira gives Crowley puppy eyes until he gives in and performs instead and…..this whole thing has COMPLETELY GOT AWAY FROM ME SOMEBODY TAKE ME AWAY FROM MY KEYBOARD….)

Somebody remind me to give thanks to Aziraphale for the Crazy Christmas Cabaret.
