Pressure Canning: Solarpunk Action Week
It’s Solarpunk Action Week Day 1!
Today I am learning to use my pressure canner because:
I can preserve healthy and homegrown meals outside of season
My backyard garden often produces more than my family can eat in the season BUT we also cannot really afford to give away food, which means I was needing to consider planting less
Heat and eat meals that are not fast food! Now, I love fast food but: it creates emissions getting to the food in addition to grocery trips; it uses unethically farmed foods; it creates a fuckton of packaging and food waste; it’s expensive and I’d rather spend the money on plants.
I have never canned before! It’s really intimidating.
Some points:
You cannot can soups, meals, vegetables, meat, or broth in a water bath canner. You MUST use a pressure canner to avoid botulism.
When you’re starting off, use tested recipes. Ball and Bernardin have lots on their websites. Or have someone experienced with pressure canning help you out.
This is critical because if the food is too dense or too large, it will NOT heat properly. Then you’re canning botulism instead of soup.
Be clean! Your jars should be scrupulously clean, and your hands, and the pot you use to cook the food you want to can.
If you have a glass top stove: be careful to make sure your pressure stays where it needs to stay. Glass-tops will often run their burners on a heat-cool cycle. Don’t let your pressure dial drop below what it needs to be during the cooling cycle.
Also for glass-tops: make sure your stove can hold the weight of your recipe, the mason jars you’ve packed it in, the water used in the canner, AND the canner itself. Not all glass-tops can.
I set a timer on my phone to remind me to check the pressure every 3 minutes. Maybe I’ll be less paranoid with my next canning project.
There are 5.5 litres of soup in the canner, and about 30 more minutes before I let it start depressurizing.
I made this recipe (with the celery substitution) which is one of the very few safe and tested recipes for a blended soup. I had a small bowl that didn’t quite fit into my 750mL jars. It’s delicious.

Weird Heads Month #09: Butterfly Faces
The nose-forks and head-crests we saw last time weren’t the only unusual headgear in ancient ruminants.
The giraffoids are represented today by just pronghorns, giraffes, and okapi, but in the past they were much more diverse, modifying their prongs and ossicones into multiple sets of horns, or into deer-like and moose-like antler shapes.
And Prolibytherium was probably the most striking of the lot.
Two different species have been identified, with Prolibytherium magnieri here living in North Africa during the early-to-mid Miocene, about 17-16 million years ago. Its exact evolutionary relationships are uncertain but it was probably part of a group called climacoceratids, deer-like giraffoids which often had thorny branching ossicones that resembled antlers.
It stood around 1.2m tall at the shoulder (~4’), and exhibited dramatic sexual dimorphism – females had slender forked horn-like ossicones, while those of the males flared out into large wide flat shapes that resembled butterfly wings.
Heavy reinforcement in the bones of the back of the males’ skulls helped to support all the extra weight of those huge ossicones, and if they actually used the structures to fight with each other then this may have also provided some protection or shock absorption.

My big THING regarding Rey is that she’s way too well-adjusted in the movies for someone who has been basically feral since childhood. Just “I didn’t know there was so much green” and that’s it. She doesn’t work 18-hour days and clear the entire starship maintenance’s repair backlog before anybody tells her she doesn’t have to accomplish that much. She doesn’t start a fight in the cafeteria and beat some dude half to death for throwing away uneaten food. She doesn’t cut herself open on an unfamiliar power tool, tie off the wound, continue working, and ask “what’s that?” when someone asks what she’s doing out of the medbay.
Rey would totally have killed a few people—but I bet she’d be vaguely surprised to learn that body disposal is expected and useful out here and a necessary part of not getting caught. I suspect Jakku was kind of a slight murderworld where finding someone dead meant a quick loot before you left it out because hiding bodies takes energy and anybody could have killed them and your best bet was to be viewed as Scavenger #2. And Poe’s gotta be like, no, if they see a dead First Order goon they’re gonna realize something’s up, out here when we kill someone, we hide them in the storage closet or trash compactor so nobody knows they’re dead.

Actually, the physics involved with that is kinda weird. The thought, oh shit, can’t breathe, usually overpowers the rational part of the mind that can calmly assess the threat and comes up with effective solutions.
But that’s only the first obstacle. The second is leverage. I don’t know about you, but I hate stomach crunches. Thing is, why you’re being gripped by the neck, the only way you can get your feet up on your attacker is to move using muscles in your neck and spine. There’s not really any other source of leverage you can draw from like this.
It’s not an easy feat. It takes conscious thought, thoughts that keep getting drowned out by the oh shit, can’t breathe, instinct.
And then
in order to kick effectively, you’ll need some kind of leverage. Putting your back against a wall would be the most effective tactic, but a person being held like that literally has no choice in this regard.
The next best tactic would be to lift your legs as high as your opponent’s shoulder and use the combined leverage to try and break their grip on your throat. Except:
If they’re lifting you up off the ground by the neck, they’ll probably not have their grip broken by human force.
Your neck bones are fairly fragile, you could end up paralyzing yourself making the attempt.
“Just kick them” doesn’t work in this situation because you’re off the ground. An ordinary kick relies on manipulating leverage and muscle from one leg on the ground and another exerting force on the target.
Trying to fight back without a good source of leverage is like trying to beat them to death with a pool noodle.
And that’s assuming you can think of any of this at all.

in order to kick effectively, you’ll need some kind of leverage. Putting your back against a wall would be the most effective tactic, but a person being held like that literally has no choice in this regard.
The next best tactic would be to lift your legs as high as your opponent’s shoulder and use the combined leverage to try and break their grip on your throat. Except:
If they’re lifting you up off the ground by the neck, they’ll probably not have their grip broken by human force.
Your neck bones are fairly fragile, you could end up paralyzing yourself making the attempt.
“Just kick them” doesn’t work in this situation because you’re off the ground. An ordinary kick relies on manipulating leverage and muscle from one leg on the ground and another exerting force on the target.
Trying to fight back without a good source of leverage is like trying to beat them to death with a pool noodle.

No Dig Garden Bed
I put together a no dig raised garden bed yesterday, that I spent zero dollars on, and I’m gonna run you through the process.
I have this spot in the backyard that is half a semicircle of rocks buried in amongst the grass, so this here. First thing was to pull all the rocks out of the grass, we’re gonna use them later.
And then lay out composts and manures and whatever you can get your hands into the size of your bed. How much depends on how much you can get your hands on, just make sure it’s nice and flat on the top. Homemade slow compost or horse manure is great for this because we won’t have to worry about weeds or pumpkins or capsicums growing out of the compost. If you’ve got stables or government paddocks near you, there is probably manure that they’re dying to get rid of.
Here’s the reason we don’t worry about those plants growing up out of it, your layers of cardboard. This acts as a weed matting for anything growing in the compost, as well as anything of the established plants on the site. Get a hold of it however you can, I got this from work. There will be a local business that takes large orders of stock that is drowning in cardboard boxes that you can get a hold of. Make sure you take any plastic tape off too, because it’s going in the soil. It’s a lot easier to take tape off damp cardboard, I let it sit out and wait for it to rain, but soaking it with the hose works too.
Add more cardboard! Cover all those edges, make sure there isn’t any gaps and you have plenty of overlap! It’s the only thing standing between you and a gardenbed full of pernicious grass rhizomes!
Look at the pile of cardboard you still have left and decide that fuck it, you’ll do too more layers of cardboard. It will all break down eventually, and if you do it right you won’t prevent water reaching the soil underneath.
Shingle the cardboard the opposite way to tiles on a roof. Start in the middle and then overlap on top of that as your work your way out. That way instead of the water running all the way to the edge, it runs under the next bit of cardboard and into the soil. If it doesn’t make sense, let me know and I’ll add a diagram.
Border! It keeps your cardboard down! Keeps your mulch in! I used the rocks I dug out and some old bricks that are in a pile around the corner. Get onto gumtree or craigslist or those facebook buynothing groups, someone’s ALWAYS trying to get rid of old tired landscaping rock. You’ll notice that there’s cardboard sticking out the edges, yeah that’s so the weeds aren’t just gonna come straight up through those rocks. It’ll look daggy for a little bit, but it’ll break down pretty quick, especially if you walk on it.
Mulch! Again for free that someone was trying to get rid of. Apparently councils and tree surgeons are always looking to get rid of it but around here everyone has already figured that out so I got this of someone who ordered too much and was trying to get rid of the excess off their driveway.
And we’re done! Don’t plant straight into it if you used a lot of manure, or if you got a ton of weeds there. Let it settle and give the soil critters time to do their work.

The Tensorate Series - JY Yang: four fantasy novellas about the guild of Tensors, magic users who can control elemental forces known as the Slack. V political, v beautifully written. Gender is a key theme but also there are dragons (naga), so there’s something for everyone tbh.
Love Beyond Body, Space And Time - anthology: a collection of indigenous sci-fi / spec fic stories with LGBTQ and two-spirit characters and themes. Stories include narratives of transition, love stories, and just good ol’ space romps.
The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror - Daniel M. Lavery: a collection of fairytale retellings with a spooky and disturbing twist. Some of these are darkly comic, and others are just plain dark. All are beautifully written, because Lavery is just That Writer.
The Spirits Series - Jordan L Hawk: a very spicy paranormal romance trilogy about Henry Strauss, an inventor, and Vincent Night, a psychic, whose differing approaches to communing with the dead cause (I’m so sorry) friction. These ones ain’t for the kiddies, but they’re so good and spooky.
The Mechanical Universe - EE Ottoman: a romance series (w a trans male protag!) set in a sort of steampunk universe, where spellcraft and mechanical animation are vying for equal respect. Tbh, everything by EE Ottoman is Very Good And Trans - The Doctor’s Discretion is my personal fave. Recommend 100%.
Peter Darling - Austin Chant: a trans retelling of Peter Pan, where Peter returns to Neverland to find that his place there is now much less certain than it was before, and he no longer belongs anywhere. There is also a romance with Captain Hook, but it works! I promise!
The Danielle Cain series - Margaret Killjoy: a duology of novellas following Danielle Cain, a queer punk rock nomad, as she solves spooky mysteries. The first book is set in an anarchist settlement, and the theme of found family + community is prevalent throughout.
An Unkindness of Ghosts - Rivers Solomon: on board the spaceship HSS Matilda, the last of humanity make their journey towards the Promised Land. Conditions on board are akin to the Antebellum South, and protagonist Aster is driven to find her way off the ship - if she can.
I Wish You All the Best - Mason Deaver: a non binary teen, Ben, comes out to their parents and is kicked out. Their sister takes them in and they start a new school, where their life begins to change for the better. This one is v sweet and deals well with mental illness.
Resilience - anthology: a collection of poetry and prose by trans women and amab trans people, featuring work by Casey Plett, KOKUMO, Magpie Leibowitz and many more.
Small Beauty - jia qing wilson-yang: a mixed race Chinese trans woman returns to her small town Canada home after the death of her cousin, and she deals with her trauma and grief. Beautiful and sad, and absolutely honest about grief.
Little Fish - Casey Plett: a trans woman begins to believe that her late Mennonite grandfather may have been trans, and while her own life starts to cave in, she attempts to connect with him through those who knew him. This one is A Lot but it’s phenomenal.
A Boy Called Cin - Cecil Wilde: a romance novel (so it’s SPICY) about Cin, a young trans man, and Tom, an older genderqueer billionaire. This is not your typical billionaire romance AT ALL; healthy relationships are depicted beautifully here alongside the reality of transition.
Confessions of the Fox - Jordy Rosenberg: a retelling of Jack Sheppard, the famous jailbreaker and thief. It’s told as though a trans man has discovered a manuscript about Jack (who is trans) and Jack’s story unfolds alongside the personal narrative of the manuscript discoverer.
Nameless Woman - anthology: a collection of fiction by trans women of colour. There’s something for everyone here - romance, sci fi, personal narratives and more. A lot of the topics covered are very heavy but they’re treated honestly and sensitively.
Maiden, Mother, Crone - anthology: a collection of fantasy stories about trans women and femmes. You want a story about a dread trans chthonic goddess? Of course you do. It’s right here. Enjoy.

Amateur - Thomas Page McBee: not fiction, but OH WELL!! You gotta read it!! The autobiography of a trans man who learns to box and asks questions about what kind of man he wants to be; can he avoid repeating the toxic masculinity he fears?
Trans Power - Juno Roche: also not fiction! Oops! Take me to court!! Roche interviews multiple trans people about their relationships with their transness, their sexuality and their bodies, and the result is a super empowering and beautiful book.
The Shape of My Name - Nino Cipri: a novelette about time travel. I really can’t say much about this one because it’s better to go in without knowing a lot, but the main theme is self discovery and acceptance, especially within the context of a neglectful / abusive family.
Pet - Akwaeke Emezi: the children in the city of Lucille know that there are no more monsters. They’ve been told so. So when Jam meets Pet, who definitely seems to be a monster, she has to face the problem of saving the world from something that it refuses to admit exists.
There are obviously many more trans fiction authors out there, but these are the ones I’ve read and can call to mind immediately. On my to read list are Juno Dawson (who writes YA primarily), Kai Cheng Thom (whose story in Maiden, Mother, Crone was my favourite), Meredith Russo (also writes YA), Leslie Feinberg, and Sybil Lamb.

The Merry Spinster is by Daniel (Mallory) Ortberg, not Lavery. Daniel M. Ortberg also wrote the beloved, late, and lamented “The Toast” website, the source of all of those “How to Tell If You’re In A Regency Novel” and captioned artworks posts. Ortberg is a Swiftian-level satirist, a hyper-literate allusionist, deft with an Adamsian or Practchetty turn of phrase, and conpletely absurd. He also wrote that Untitled Goose Game paean.
Lavery is his married name, which he uses publicly, but he still publishes under Ortberg; I listed him as Lavery because he’s no longer in contact with his family and it seemed more respectful to include him in this list under his chosen name.

Lavery is his married name, which he uses publicly, but he still publishes under Ortberg; I listed him as Lavery because he’s no longer in contact with his family and it seemed more respectful to include him in this list under his chosen name.

Turns out? It’s pretty much just “get some seaweed and cook it”
It is a little bit more complicated than that, and there are various ways to do it with different results, but seriously - from the looks of it, if you can boil pasta, you can make your own plastic. The only thing stopping bioplastic from being a huge cottage industry like soap or beer is that nobody knows about it
This is pretty much the same procedure with starch-based bioplastic. It can be as simple as 3:1 cassava starch and glycerol (which naturally gelatenizes with heat).
You can also make your own glycerol/ glycerin easily. Just need some lye, oil, water and salt and about 30 mins on the stove.
Okay, how about biofuels? Is there any known way to brew up a batch of regular unleaded in a backyard algae tank?
Yes! The first link above is actually a site almost entirely about that. And another common way to make biodiesel is with used cooking oil that you can get free/cheap from local restaurants
I think Kiwami Japan did a variation of this to make one of his Sharpest [ ] Knife In The World knives. All with equipment he had lying around in his weird little kitchen.

This should have been such an obvious tip-off. No smile, barely any detectible emotion at all, but once you know what’s going on you can just see him looking around in that last gif and remembering the last time he was there.
(Which is particularly impressive, considering the fire hadn’t yet been shot at the time this scene was filmed.)
It makes him touching the stack of books meaningful, too (second GIF). We wouldn’t think twice about Aziraphale touching his own books, but Crowley? Anthony J’Im-Not-A-Book-Person Crowley?
It’s not quite a loving/affectionate touch, but he’s still making sure it’s real. Sort of grounding himself. This is Aziraphale’s home, but Crowley’s too, by extension - a place he’s comfortable, at ease, a place he can be himself.
He’s also very clearly scanning for threats. Something Aziraphale rarely if ever thinks to do, but for Crowley it’s second nature. It’s why he stands still with only his eyes moving, checking for surprises, ambush points, signs of intrusion. It’s actually one of the few times we see Crowley deadly serious: neither goofing off, nor lovestruck, panicking or otherwise being tangled up in his emotions. This is Crowley in hardcore Evil-doesn’t-sleep watch-your-back-at-all-times Hell-trained-me-well trust-no-one survival mode. And Michael Sheen REALLY nails it.

Kíli can’t tell elf genders apart, he just finds everyone really pretty.
(I headcanon that dwarves express their gender with braids, as it’s simple but effective and can be changed as the individual sees fit. As elves don’t have a similar system, younger Dwarves find it difficult to address elves with proper pronouns, because “what do you mean we have to guess based on their features? Assume based on stereotypical traits, how impolite!”)

#yes!!!!!! its not that sam’s contributions shouldn’t be appreciated #but frodo bore like impossible psychological torment and despair #and yet clowns still act like this because #he does actually crack and struggle under the stress #and he doesn’t have some aragorn style battle scene #but GO OFF i guess

Let’s be real, at least half the reason people refuse to see Frodo as the “real hero” of the story is because he actively chooses non-violence and mercy.
I remember some YouTube commenter writing “Frodo is so overrated, he never even kills anyone” and if that doesn’t win the award for Most Impressive Failure to Get the Point, I’m not sure what does.

They are two halves of a single hero. (No, this is not a joke about being hobbit-sized.)
Frodo is the one who has to bear the mental torture and hardship of the Ring–but without Sam, he couldn’t have. Who is there to offer a joke, a smile, a hug, an unjudging ear, an extra bite of bread when Frodo looks peaky and ill, a doubled-up bedroll when it’s too cold for a small hobbit used to a good hole with a warm fire? Frodo would have failed long before he reached Mount Doom without Sam to cheer him on.
Likewise: Sam could never have made the journey alone. He doesn’t have Frodo’s mental strength. But he’s a gardener: his job is to make things grow, to nurture them and make them flourish. Who is there to give him a purpose as he travels across a land so big, so far, hoping to save his home?
Separate the pair of them, and neither would have made it. Frodo needed the shelter of Sam’s heart in order to find his way–and Sam needed a leader.
It’s literally love and friendship and camaraderie that save Middle Earth. Neither could be the chosen one alone.

I read this book, deeply in love, when I was nine or ten years old. I asked my dad, baffled, “Daddy, why do I love this book so much?” And he thought about it for a second and said carefully, “Well you see JD, you are very small.”
Frodo was the smallest of them. I think canonically speaking but also in spirit, he never jumped at opportunity, he never ran into battles, never wanted to be a part of his own story. But he did anyway, he saved the world and that world depended on him, his smallness irrelevant, even working in his advantage a few times.
And I think that’s important to people who are small in their own way.

but also ive never seen anything hotter than when geralt is fighting without his armor and instead in tight pants and several of his shirt’s buttons undone and i want every fight scene from here on like that

This ties in quite nicely to a recent fiasco where a guy named Andrew Klavan, who is apparently an author of some sort, made an even more ignorant than usual rant. It was about about how he hated the show because he considered it “unrealistic” that the women - particularly GoddessQueen Calanthe, were shown as capable of winning sword fights or doing a sword fight (it’s not clear).
Swords YouTube was united in their rejection of this notion - not just for his hilariously inaccurate claims about equipment but also because they unanimously agreed there are three major factors that decide who’s likely to come out of a battle second-best, and who gets to live:
Quality of training
Quality of equipment
Luck
Obviously a queen of a nation that regularly has battles and skirmishes would certainly have access to the best training, and commission the best quality armor - and we can all agree to that anyone who is born into royalty is lucky.
So really, if this author and those like him were upset at having to suspend disbelief about sword fighting, in a world with literal dragons, they’d be mad at these scenes with Geralt kicking ass in just a shirt.
Weird that he’s bothered by a realistic depiction of a powerful woman, but not a comically unrealistic power fantasy of a man.
