This is the oldest piece of music known to humankind. It’s engraved in cuneiform on a tablet from 1400 BC. And it was a hymn to their goddess Nikkal.
I wasn’t actually expecting something serious.
That was, um, actually unexpected.
What is this grand old instrument? It is almost ethereal to my ears!
I wish more ancient music was written down. It’d be interesting to study it!
Only 15th century BC kids will remember this bop
It would’ve likely originally been played on a sammûm, a bit like a lyre, in accompaniment of a singer.
Whilst its the oldest piece of music, it’s not complete (I believe the oldest complete song is the Seikilos Epitaph), so it’s transcription is controversial; there are a few differing decipherments.

As a side note… I am really annoyed by one thing about Star Trek.
“Replicated food is not as good as real food.”
That’s ridiculous. In Star Trek, replicator technology is part of the same tech tree as transporters. Replicated food would be identical to the food it was based on, down to the subatomic level.
Proposal for a Watsonian explanation:
In a blind taste test, nobody, but nobody, can tell the actual difference between replicated food and “real” food. (Think back to our youth and the New Coke vs. Pepsi taste tests, only worse.) BUT, humans being What We Are, the human Starfleet members insist that “real” food is better than replicated food for reasons including, but certainly not limited to:
1. Hipsters have survived even into the 24th century. “No, you just can’t make good curry from a replicator! You gotta toast the spices yourself right before you cook it or it’s not the same, maaaaaan”
2. All military and para-military members everywhere always grouse and bitch about the food and sigh over What We Get Back Home. It could literally be the same replicator recipe you use at home when someone has to work late or just doesn’t feel like making the effort to cook, but people are people everywhere so they’re going to complain about it.
3. Humans tend to think we’re smarter than we actually are and we can totally tell when something is going on; as a result, human crew members insist they can “taste the difference” because their minds are making shit up, as our brains do.
4. One could presume that, generally speaking, a replicator recipe programmed into a starship or base replicator database would come out the same every time. This is perhaps the 24th century equivalent of mass catering. (I won’t try to account for the nuances of replicator tech that might allow for variances, and leave aside for the moment the fact that some people probably tinker with the standard “recipes” to suit their own taste.) The single thing that would be different in this case about “real” food is the variation, since of course the “real” dish will have slight variances every time due to the whims of the cook, the oven temperature fluctuation, freshness of ingredients, etc.. And since we are an easily bored species who really, really hates boredom, I bet people would jump all over that to lament the lack of “real” food when they’re out exploring strange new worlds and new civilizations and whatnot. (This is the only reason I can think of that might hold up to scrutiny.)
The Vulcans in Starfleet (and Data), of course, remain baffled by this human insistence that “replicator food isn’t as good as ‘real’ food”, as it defies all known forms of logic.
Hmm. This is a fair point. It occurs to me that I once met a Texan who commented that the chili in a restaurant I worked at was not as good as what they made in Texas, and when I pointed out that the cook was a Texan and the chili was his personal recipe, for which he had won awards in Texas, just said “Doesn’t matter. Wasn’t made in Texas.”
I gotta be honest, Replicator technology is one of the things I am SUPREMELY jealous of, and I’m… okay, I’m not a great cook, but I can cook and there are several dishes I do very well. I think if I had access to the technology I would cook a lot less, though, and I would for sure use replicated ingredients.
1. It is not just hipsters that act like this about food. All the grandmothers I know feel this way too, and I don’t see that ever changing.
The missing ingredient is love, obviously. You can’t get that from a replicator.
Right, for that you need the holodeck.

You have to admit, it takes a mind of a certain bent to come up with a scheme like “make sure your acts of villainy are so ridiculous that nobody will believe you even if you openly confess”.
Even better, this is only one small part of a much larger scheme that basically culminates in “break the fourth wall and become the narrator.”

Colleges everywhere are closing early for the semester, which means students will be leaving behind all sorts of living essentials behind. This usually happens at the end of every semester anyway, but now is definitely the time to take value of others’ waste.
On top of the fact that many people will be going without pay, panic buying has left many people without essentials. Here’s how to make it by with what you have.
Good places to dumpster dive for food:
Small grocery stores
Bakeries
Donut shops
Sandwich shops that bake their own bread
Dollar stores
Pharmacies
Low waste DIY essentials:
Make your own toothpaste
(How to) Make Your Own Toothpaste
Make your own deodorant
A zero waste deodorant with only 3 ingredients
Make your own lye, which is essential for soap making, can be used to unclog drains, and can be used as a disinfectant:
Learn How to Make Homemade Lye
Make soap with lye and coconut oil
7 Easy Steps to Homemade Lye Soap for Beginners | Simple Life Mom
Toilet paper alternative in a pinch
Of course these recipes aren’t the only way to make your own hygiene essentials (you might not have all the ingredients or it might not work for you personally) so absolutely do your own research to find what you can save on in these tough times. And last, but most importantly, now it is more vital than ever to connect with your community. Together you are a stronger force in demanding that your needs are met and you have access to vital, life-saving resources.
Autonomous Groups Are Mobilizing Mutual Aid Initiatives to Combat the Coronavirus - It’s Going Down
Coincidentally I was looking at that toilet paper one about two days before the whole toilet paper hoarding thing began going down here. I had a spare sheet, so we are now equipped with many many fabric wipes. I already make my own deodorant (with only 2 ingredients ;) ) But I’m only just beginning to plant up my garden as a food forest, so I would have been better prepared if it had happened next year!

I’m doing a lot of things this week that I would/should be doing anyway, but also fit into SPAW. Springtime things, garden things, bee things, farm things. And that’s my normal stuff, but I think I’m getting more done *because* it’s solarpunk action week, and I’ve got this larger purpose in mind. And others making similar efforts, that I can read about here!
And similarly, there’s stuff I’m into anyway, but the pandemic is making me think more about. And then do more about. Like I’ve been meaning to cut up some old sheets for reusable toilet paper, to reduce our usage, and now I can’t GET any tp, so today I actually did it! Progress on existing goals!
And I’m probably planting more, going a little bigger on this year’s garden, because the idea of not being able to just go to the store is hovering around my head. I don’t *actually* think I’m doomsday prepping here, but the benefit of relying just a little less on capitalism to fulfill all my needs is really making itself known these days.
So there’s a little silver lining in this covid-19 situation - just a tiny one for us in this house, nothing compared to all the suffering - in that it’s pushing me to do better. And the idea that we’re all in this together - even if it needs to be separately, in our own houses - is very present for me this week.

Has this been done? I dunno but here it is!
Took me months to draw this! Thought it up since I first saw TROS. Basically it’s a “what if Finn had accidentally hit Hux in the vein then decided to take him with them out of guilt”
(Also I will admit, if I where to ship Hux with someone other than Kylo, him and Poe make one of my favourite relationship dynamics!)

Not to worry! There’s a simple, diy/upcycle way to keep your ass clean during the apocalypse 😉
In short, it’s called family cloth. You cut and hem little squares and use them like toilet paper. When half of them are used up, you throw them in the washer with diaper stripper and they’re clean!

i dont thinik people are adequately thinking thru how the combination of mass incarceration as such a huge population uniquely in the US, aging prison population, poor hygeine in prisons (including their methods of trying to control the flu being ‘put infected people in a different cell’), historical overcrowding, poor health of imprisoned people in general, bare bones health care in prisons, and fucked up attitudes towards prisoners (for racist and other reasons) could v easily converge in a massive amount of death that would be impossible to project or estimate from other places because our criminal justice system is uniquely terrible.

Obi-Wan did not pause to consider what it had cost him to win his victory over Darth Maul, but rushed immediately to Qui-Gon. Kneeling at the Jedi Master’s side, he lifted his head and shoulders and cradled him gently in his arms. “Master!” he breathed in a whisper. Qui-Gon’s eyes opened.
“Too late, my young Padawan.”
“No!” Obi-Wan shook his head violently in denial.
“Now you must be ready, whether the Council thinks you so or not. You must be the teacher.” The strong face twisted in pain, but the dark eyes were steady. “Obi-Wan. Promise me you will train the boy.”
Obi-wan nodded instantly, agreeing without thinking, willing to say or do anything that would ease the other’s pain, desperate to save him. [Terry Brooks’s The Phantom Menace]

Solarpunk Action Week Day 6:
Today, like many other people as far as I observed, stocked up on things for home. Not too much, though. Just enough to last us a few weeks. It was so odd and stressful seeing so many store shelves empty of things that are considered basic. (Toilet paper? Seriously? What are they going to do, wipe the virus away?) Tip: Bread doesn’t last as long as you think. Buy things like oil, flour, and yeast to make the bread. They last much longer. I recommend
bloomingnova ’s bread recipe. Flour is also useful for making survival food like hardtack that can last up to fifty years! Both are a great activity to do for Solarpunk Action Week.
Anyway, I figured that I should speed up my plans, so I planted more seeds in my garden. I already have a pit of homemade compost to give it a boost. Hopefully it is enough to start another garden bed. I recommend quicker growing plants such as spinach, lettuce, and radishes. Herbs are also fantastic as they can be used as seasoning as well as medicine (Important: Herbs are not an alternative to professional medical advice!!). These are also great for beginner gardeners! Find out what zone you live in and what plants love your climate. Trust me, just buying whatever sounds good isn’t a great way to start and is a waste of time. Stick to what is capable of growing where you live.

considering that coronavirus primarily spreads through coughing/sneezing and people touching their face couldn’t we stop, or at least slow, the spread of it by having everyone wear fursuits?
You laugh but this is literally why plague doctor outfits existed, the mask and the heavy coat stop the patient’s fluids from getting on you, and the walking stick allows you to manipulate patients without needing to touch them. They may not have realized it at the time (no germ theory and all that), and it may not have been the most effective solution, but it was substantially better than nothing.
Medieval people may not have had all our extensive scientific knowledge, but they weren’t idiots. They did what worked.

“No matter how long you work, it’s always going to end sometime. And there’s always going to be things left undone. And it wouldn’t matter if you lived until you were seventy-five.
There would still be new ideas. There would still be things that you wished you would have accomplished. You could work for several lifetimes. If I could clone myself, there would still be too much work to do – even if there were five of me…
And there are no regrets….
Part of the reason that I’m not having trouble facing the reality of death is that it’s not a limitation, in a way. It could have happened any time, and it is going to happen sometime.
If you live your life according to that, death is irrelevant.
Everything I’m doing right now is exactly what I want to do.
RS:Do you get more impatient with the trivial things in life?
The opposite. Nothing is trivial. I wish I didn’t have to sleep. But otherwise, it’s all fun. It’s all part of the game…”

Hey! Fuck you! Save that stuff for the people who really need it!
Heroic lairs do not need have foreboding mist covering the floor! It is a requirement for evil lairs to have the mist! Otherwise the evil lair isn’t up to code!
^^^
THIS!
But heroes need it for Dramatic Entrance!
No they don’t. “Dramatic entrances” for heroes means bursting through a window or blowing up a door or crashing through a wall and removing a helmet. It’s got to say strength and power and determination and a willingness to risk life and limb.
Dramatic entrances for villains requires sweeping or emerging. They’re slow, deliberate, and sinister. The door slowly opens and the first thing you see are my black leather boots clicking against the ground as my long trailing cape (optional) slides over the floor, parting the dense carpet of swirling dry ice like it’s the Red Sea.
Plus, even in situations where that kind of entrance is appropriate—such as with your shrouded-by-night, mysterious-vigilante-type hero—where exactly are they most likely to be Dramatically Entering? Oh, that’s right, the villain’s lair. Where the dry ice already is.
Yes!
God, this is something I wish more people understood. If a hero has to bring their own dry ice for an entrance, it’s because their villain has dropped the ball and is not stocking their lair appropriately—probably because heroes are panic-buying all the dry ice.

care to explain this statement? Even a little bit would help i think
Actually they raised a fair point if you’re referring to relationships between two men. the best example I found is the Yu-Gi-Oh series which is often commented on for how gay everything seems
but a majority of that is not due to the fact that the Creator is so focused on male friendships it’s due to the fact that this Creator in these writers have no earthly idea how to create women with any kind of autonomy that have any significant bond with the main male character so you end up with the only significant emotional bonds he has being men thus resulting in relationships between men that have much more depth and meaning and romantic undertones then really any of the shallow unimportant
underdeveloped actually canonical romances because of the misogynistic writers who didn’t know how to give the woman any depth or importance to the main male character.
This…makes so much sense.
Hence why m/m ships tend to dominate fandoms

Among all the handwashing instructions and fun 20-second song suggestions, I haven’t yet seen anyone note that it is IMPOSSIBLE to wash your hands properly if your fingernails are long. If you can’t put your fingertips straight down against your other palm without your nails adding too much distance to do it, you cannot wash under your fingernails properly unless you use a nail brush every time. Hand sanitizer won’t do the trick either. If you can’t rub the very ends of your fingers against the other palm, your hands aren’t truly clean after you wash them, no matter how long you soap up. Please, during this global emergency, keep your nails short.

Amazing news! Think of how much our situation will improve if this plan comes through!
The face of Wales’ countryside would change under an international plan to plant 1 trillion new trees across the world to soak up the carbon dioxide produced since the Industrial Revolution began.
Our national parks would become covered in forestry under the Swiss plan, which would see two thirds of the CO2 released since the 18th Century stored in woodland.
The report by the Swiss university ETH Zürich found that the Earth’s land could support 4.4 billion hectares of continuous tree cover.
That is 1.6 billion more than the currently existing 2.8 billion hectares.
Once mature, these new forests could store 205 billion tonnes of carbon: about two thirds of the 300 billion tonnes of carbon that has been released into the atmosphere as a result of human activity since the Industrial Revolution.
