smallandsoft-garden:

I had to water my backyard today.

The insects and birds are coming to enjoy the water, and in the air lies the smell of summer rain.

It has been one of the dryest Aprils in my life. The news said it was the dryest ones since 2007 (in Germany).

And it’s not only the missing rain. It’s in combination with a lot of sun and even more wind that takes the water away.

In a way I’m lucky with my small backyard, with a lot of shade and a dense soil that keeps in the water. But I am still worried.

The last two summers were the dryest and hottest summers in my life. What if the next one is even worse.

So I sm preparing as good as I can.

I can’t collect the rainwater from the roof, because I need permission from my landlord, but I am planning to buy some big boxes to put outside when rain is coming, to store it for the summer.

But the main thing i have to do is, to reduce evaporation.

I already sowed white clover as a protective layer (and to improve the soil) but I will look into other techniques.

I am open to any ideas and advice you can give.

People are gardening and farming in much hotter and dryer condition than me, and they have been for millennia. There have to be ways to deal with this. And if I have to change my view on gardening, I am willing to do so.

Sustainability also means to adapt to change.

I noticed this too in the UK. I’ve never known such a dry april. Long term plans are to buy a large water tank and alter the plumbing in my house so that the grey water from sinks, showers and baths go into it. In the short term, I’m doing the washing up and then emptying the water into a tub outside, which I’m using to water the garden with. None of the plants seemed to mind dirty, slightly soapy water, and it kept all my seedlings alive.

If you’re on a slope at all, you can also look into digging swales to make the most of the rain that does fall on the garden.

What I find really interesting about the Good Omens Lockdown special is that it seems like Aziraphale is still trying to play the 6000 year old game of “Convince me! Tempt me! Get me to say yes!” And Crowley seems to have put his foot down and is waiting for Aziraphale to be the one to explicitly say yes. For him to tell him he wants him to come over and spend lockdown with him. He gives him a two day deadline before he’ll be asleep and unable to talk to him for several months. In the beginning Aziraphale even seems hopeful that he is out tempting and causing mischief so that he has an excuse to make him come over and keep an eye on him. I give it 8 hours before Aziraphale caves and calls him back.

Some interesting facts:

The man in charge of public health at the time openly encouraged people to attend the victory parades. Other public health officials pleaded for people not to attend

The first wave killed 3-5 million. The second killed 20-50 million.

One aspect to the increased deaths during the second wave was people becoming infected at the same time. This led to a surge on hospitals hitting at the same time. Not only did those with the virus die before they could be treated, but non-infected emergencies were unable to be treated. This led to exponential death rates.

When the second wave hit, places like San Francisco refused to wear masks in public. They also stopped social distancing. San Francisco ended up with one of the highest fatality rates in the US.

Moral of the story: even if your state “opens up”, stay home if you are able. If not, wear a mask, wash your hands, and practice social distancing.

angry-acehole-for-positivity:

Remember to stay aware of your local safety measures, which can be found on the official government sites for your states, provinces, or territories.

squeaky-floorboards:

Jsyk, they say the second wave in the US is going to hit between September and November, most likely. Stay safe and keep washing your friggin’ hands!

Seventeen years ago, the entire developed world went into lockdown under threat of a viral apocalypse. This coronavirus attack was called COVID-19.

During this lockdown, many loving couples were quarantined, and in December of 2020, there was a dramatic spike in birth rates all over the world. These children were called the “coronials”.

In January of this year, some of the coronials started displaying supernatural abilities that seem to be self-inhibiting.

One of them can fly, but only indoors. Another can move objects with her mind, but only if they are a very specific shade of periwinkle blue. Another can read minds, but only if the subject is not trying to hide anything. Another can guess a random card picked from a deck with 100% accuracy, but can’t outperform probability in any other area.

There are dark waves on the horizon. Satellites are reporting strange buzz. As a new global threat looms, maybe our only hope will be…

Hey everyone, so you know organizations like UNICEF and whatnot that allow you to buy the kind of gifts where you donate mosquito nets or something in a person’s name?  Well a lot of those organizations will let you donate vaccines, as it turns out.  Like, right now on UNICEF’s site, providing 100 polio vaccines to kids in need is 19 USD.  And I’m not saying you should buy it and then send a card to an anti-vax relative saying you’ve provided lifesaving vaccinations in their name, but actually that’s exactly what I’m saying

blunt-science:

This is the Maiden of Llullaillaco, an Incredibly Well-Preserved Child Sacrifice from the Incan Empire around 500 years ago.

The Maiden of Llullaillaco, sacrificed at around the age of 15, was discovered with the other “Children of Llullaillaco” which includes a 6 year old girl and a 7 year old boy.

These mummies are so well preserved due to their position within a tomb atop a mountain within the extremely dry Atacama Desert. They are so well preserved, that their internal organs are intact, individual hairs on the arms can be seen and even one of the heart’s still contains frozen blood.

The deaths of the three children occurred by drugging the children with alcohol and coca, then placing them in the tomb where they eventually died in their sleep. This appears to have been a very well prepared process, as hair samples dictated that the children had extremely rich diets leading up to their deaths. The tombs were also adorned with elaborate dress and trinkets.

The boy however, faced a different death that could’ve indicated struggle or a different burial process. The boy was very tightly bound, and had dislocated hips and ribs and it appears he died under stress as the clothing contains both vomit and blood. Suffocation is the likely cause of his death due to the way he was bound.

Yes! These are the niños del volcán, or vulcano kids, found in 1999 in the Salta Province here in Argentina, near the Llullaillaco volcano. They’re so “very well preserved”, “mummified” because of the height, temperature and pressure, more than 6739 meters above sea level, or around 22000 feet above the sea level. I’ve heard that when they were found, the people who found them got the scare of their lifetimes because they just looked alive.

The indigenous diaguita calchaquí communities there in Salta have already made clear that taking the children away from the volcano was disrespectful as hell, since they were sacrificed back in the day, and that was their burial site (they had many offerings and more) and our belief is that they are to remain there, up the apu (major spirit of the volcano or mountain) to connect with other ancestors and protect us. Even if this kind of offerings aren’t done now, obviously, there is absolutely no valid reason to take them from their resting place. And it’s much more disrespectful because they’re in a museum exhibition and people are even paying to see them, and our indigenous communities get a grand total of 0 (cero) profit nor remuneration for being taken away. So there’s that. Quick reminder that these are indigenous children and indigenous people should have been given, and be given now too, the right to choose what to do with our people’s remains.

Another quick remark: you can’t drug someone with coca leaves. The coke plant is commonly chewed all day in the argentinean northwest, it helps cope with great pressures in height and doesn’t have any bad side effects, it’s even good for your teeth. It’s also a sacred plant (kokamama’s spirit resides in the coke leaves) and that’s why they were ingesting it. Kokamama is a spirit of divination and communication with apus and other major ancestral spirits, which is what the children were meant to do. The alcohol, on the other hand, was very likely chicha, a sacred drink aswell. So yeah, they weren’t “drugged”, they had ingested coke leaves, for both it’s spiritual and biological functions, and chicha or other sacred alcohol as well. Coca and chicha are both common offerings in our indigenous communities to this day.

Had a big talk with this about finding Aztec sites in the past but “It’s for science!”

Shut the FUCK up and respect us.

Apparently I badly want to go on my “stop making fun of plague doctors, they were ahead of their time and doing the best they could with the primitive equipment they had available” rant.

They weren’t stupid.

They shoved herbs in their breathing hose because they knew the air was bad and hoped it would help, and *they were right* in theory. The plague itself was not an airborn virus, but they couldn’t know that and it wasn’t the only thing killing people at the time anyway, and they covered *all* their bases. If they’d had the technological knowhow to make air tanks, or even better air filters, they would’ve. They just made the best air filters they could.

What we think they wore isn’t exactly what they wore, and what they actually wore would later be repurposed into scuba suits (and thus spacesuits too) and *actual hazmat suits*, because the theory was sound, the materials were just lacking, and honestly what they did with the materials they had was hardcore.

they wore full face protection which avoids the most obvious mucosal transmission routes

INCLUDING GLASS IN THE EYEHOLES. They invented safety goggles before most of the world had nailed down corrective eye glasses yet

they wore additional head protection to cover seams in their mask/hoods

they oiled and waxed all their clothes to make it fluid-resistant

they wore separate but tight fitting equally if not more fluid-resistant gloves and/or armcuffs so they could keep hand contamination to a minimum even when dressing/undressing AND they only wore the suit in areas they thought was contaminated and took it off before entering uncontaminated areas

they may have used herbed vinegar to clean, and if the stories are true this was clever because 1) it’s available and portable 2) pretty effective as far as medieval disinfectants go versus the damage it does the the user (as opposed to what they had for bleach at the time, and the actual percentage level in alcohols at the time which was mostly insufficient for task as well as being needed for more important things); vinegar is *still* a decent disinfectant even now

It honestly took doctors well into the twentieth century to get that level of obsessive attention to hygiene and cross-contamination back. A whole lot of babies and mothers wouldn’t’ve died, for instance, if a plague doctor instead of an obstetrician supported the birth because A PLAGUE DOCTOR WOULD KNOW TO WASH THEIR GODDAMNED HANDS.

Actual plague doctor’s outfits:

Who was responsible for turning plague doctors into laughingstocks instead of primative but honoured medical and scientific predecessors anyway?

Was it the Victorians? It was probably the Victorians. Those pretentious sanctimonious jerks ruined everything.

#i did not realize people made fun of plague doctors #ive mostly seen people freaked out by the aesthetic #they always seemed to me like a bittersweet example of humanity scared shitless #and still trying really really hard #i’d get very poetic about it #sometimes its a stare out the window and empathize with plague doctors kind of day and that’s just how it is #that’s just how growing up is #i feel like thanks victorians is a strong contender for thanks obama’s throne (tags via [personal profile] cicadianrhythm)

but you almost forgot one of the coolest things!!

supposedly some plague doctors would carry hollow canes in order to check the pulse without needing to use their hands or take off their gloves? it was sort of like a very early example of a stethescope

plague boys were smart af

so the pointy doctor stick has an actual medical function

i can’t imagine writing a story that isn’t about love

i don’t mean this in the romantic sense necessarily either i just mean that every story of value to me has love at its center, whether its about loving yourself, your people, your family, your friends, your community, the world at large, etc. a story that can’t be described as a love story at its core in some capacity is meaningless to me. if your writing isn’t a love letter to something what is the point? if it completely lacks love why write it? books and movies that lack this are so common in white western media - they write to make themselves look good, or edgy, or to make money, and forget that humans telling stories is at its core an act of love. it’s the depth and the sound and the colour of stories, it’s the meat and blood of them. i don’t want to read anything that lacks love.

To kick off the month, my sister and I are rewatching the show and rereading the book.

And today, in the middle of ep 1, my sister goes “have you noticed Crowley puts himself between Aziraphale and the traffic? My ex also did that, that’s so sweet”

Well NOW I’VE NOTICED

(Tbf it’s probably coincidence born from Crowley’s habit of staying firmly at Aziraphale’s left, but still. Putting yourself between the lady and the traffic is considered chivalrous here, if pretty old fashioned)

It’s definitely more than that. When they’re crossing, Aziraphale acting oblivious as ever, Crowley holds up a hand towards traffic like, ‘Yeah, wait a sec, just let him cross.’ And then they get to the other side and Crowley moves to his right just as some pedestrians come up, forcing them to step around and actually off the sidewalk a little, rather than bump into Aziraphale.

Whether the traffic is vehicular or human, Crowley provides a buffer between it and the angel - who’s probably protected by subconscious miracles anyway, but that’s not the point. The point is this is just another of those things Crowley does to show love and friendship and protectiveness without saying a word.

Ha, you’re right! And (just like Crowley walking across the grass at Tadfield Manor) it could be just to set them up for the blocking of the “Get thee behind me! After you.” moment, but I like this in-world explanation for it. :-D
