For anyone who knows how to crochet, this is a great way to keep a ton of those plastic shopping bags out of the trash. Ask your friends and family to save them for you and in a week or two you’ll have enough to make anything you could think of.

Update: it’s delicious! It’s a little bland because it’s just a very basic recipe, but with a little research and some trial and error I bet I can make a really good multigrain bread

gardencorekid:

Tried my hand at making bread for the first time in years today. I’ve never seemed to get it quite right, and it’s always been discouraging. But my family (mostly myself) eats a lot of bread, and it results in lots of plastic waste from plastic bread sleeves. If this goes well, I’ll either try to thrift a bread box or just save a plastic sleeve from the current loaves in our pantry. Homemade bread is 100x better than storebought anyways. Also, this is vegan. the recipe called for butter, so I used a plant-based butter, but I’m sure a neutral oil could also suffice. Here’s the recipe I followed.

Okay so hear me out. Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Animated Series; but instead of it being in space, or like.. any of the cool things that actually make it Star Wars, we put them in rival high schools. INNOVATIVE.

First Order Academy, run by Student Body President Brendol Hux Jr., his personal muscle Ben Organa-Solo Kylo Ren, and really cool football team Captain Phasma.

New Republic High School, with plucky foster kid Rey, expelled from First Order Prep football player Finn, and star running back Poe Dameron.

aaaand that’s all I got.

A post on mulch

Spaw day 4

3/11/20

Do you have trouble growing plants because of the weather? Do the hot summer days take out your plants, or, alternately, does the winter frost nerf your poor plant babies? Or mabe the soil is just too hard packed, dry, and shitty.

Good news for you. Mulch can fix that.

What is mulch?

Mulch is a ground cover, usually made of shredded plant material like bark, that helps insulate the ground, keeping moisture in and preventing the roots of your plants from being affected by either extreme heat or extreme cold.

How can it improve my soil?

Well.

1. It traps in moisture. This makes your soil softer and easier to work with. You can do much with soil so dry and hard packed that even jumping on a shovel wont get you anywhere. With soft soil you can turn it and add in soil amenders like fertilizers or compost.

2. It gives bugs a home. The contant moisture will encourage more worms to appear, and everyone knows that worms help fix the soil. But in reality most bugs help fix soil. You will find that many different species of beetles call a layer of mulch home.

3. It biodegrades. A nice layer of bark will eventually compost and get broken down by bugs and bacteria and become rich fertile soil. To learn more about compost check out my other post here.

What else can mulch do?

Along with fixing up soil, providing a living space for insects and protecting plants against the elements, it also can help prevent weeds. A nice two inch thick layer of mulch is really hard for even the most determined weed to get through.

Where can i get mulch?

If you do it right, you wont ever have to pay for mulch. Heres some ways to aquire it for free

-In fall you can go around and rake up leaves to use as mulch.

-have you ever seen a massive pile of woodchips on the side of the road or in an empty lot? Grab that! Tree chopping companies often dump HUGE piles of woodchips in random ass places because its cheaper than dumping it in a landfill. You might even be able to comtact a tree chopping company and ask them to dump the woodchips in your yard, ive heard of some companies doing that for free.

-craiglist is your friend. Go on and click on the free section. I live in a town filled with farms and ranches that often have piles of plant material and manure (i know its stinky, but your plants love it) laying around unwanted. Theyd be more than happy if you dropped by and snagged some.

-places that chop up old rubber tires. Chopped up rubber bits wont decompose into fertile soil, but it will still regulate tempurature, hold in moisture, and house some bugs, and since it wont decompose you wont ever have to refill wherever needs mulch, and its a much better use for old tires than just ending up in a landfill.

Add some mulch to your garden and have a wonderful solar punk action week!

Plants don’t wage war

Ever heard of blackberries?

Yes, plants do wage war

Mint and strawberries, too. They need to be quarantined or they will kill basically everything else.

I planted mint in the ground 2 years ago.

It’s currently fighting a bitter battle to the death against the raspberries attempting to invade from the east while trying to annex the patio.

Could go either way at this point TBH. Unless, of course, I take a shovel and the blowtorch out there and battle both back to within their original boundaries.

And anyone wondering if a blowtorch is overkill for weeding back mint has never actually planted mint.

This post did not go where I expected it to.

Our garden plot at my childhood home slowly got overrun by wild blackberries after we stopped managing it while my sister and I were in nursing school. And by overrun I mean it was like a 4 foot tall thicket of wild blackberries. It hadn’t been touched by humans in at least 4 years. I started the ultimately futile task of trying to clear this plot with a machete and discovered to my amazement a patch of mint several feet across underneath the canopy of blackberry, still fighting the good fight all those years later.

Ultimately it took two jars of homemade napalm and some creative fire placement to clear that patch but I damn sure saved that patch of mint. It earned the right to be there.

Yall mother fuckers don’t even talk unless you’ve had to wage war on kudzu (it’s an ivy strain directly from Hell) that shit doesn’t just wage war with other plants, it wages war with all living things on planet earth. It’s some gnarly ass Blood for the Blood God, Chlorophyll for the Chlorophyll Throne demon weed.

Can second the comments of Kudzu.

I forget where I read it but there’s this one tree that creates an extremely flammable substance that’s in both the bark and leaves. Dead trees become torches and crushed up leaves become dust-incendiary, all while the plant’s seeds are Giant Redwood levels of resilient to open flame. IE it has a goddamn scorched earth policy. It’s even more badass than plants that use toxins to starve other plants.

I’d like to third the comments on Kudzu. These are the battlefields:

See those weird pillars? Those were trees. See that strange lump in the middle? That was a house. Everything green you see in this photo is kudzu.

Kudzu is an apocalyptic nightmare

They smother every other living plant to death

Those trees under there are dead, they can’t get sunlight. Kudzu takes over and steals everything from these trees, and becomes them. It’s creepy as hell. These plants are basically straight out of a horror novelist’s wet dream tbh.

The bodies of everything the kudzu has slain.

What used to be a house

Someone attempting to drive a four wheeler through it, to give you scale

It’s an ornamental plant kept in check in china, but was introduced to north america where it immediately went rampant and began to spread incredibly fast like a disease, destroying everything in its wake

The ONLY thing that has stopped this curse from engulfing the united states is goats. Apparently goats love this stuff like no tomorrow. Everywhere we find it now, we just bring a horde of goats to cut it down. Everything is fine…. for now.

Kudzu is on time magazine’s top 10 invasive species to look out for.

This little buddy doing his part

Not to keep spamming this post but

“the growth of kudzu as it became a “structural parasite” of the South,[7] enveloping entire structures when untreated[11] and often referred to as “the vine that ate the South”.[13]”

“It has been spreading rapidly in the southern U.S., “easily outpacing the use of herbicide spraying and mowing, as well increasing the costs of these controls by $6 million annually”.[2]“

yall it’s been estimated this plant consumes 600 kilometers of the united states every year

it’s been suggested that we just start eating it to make it go away

Adding to the spam: yes, kudzu IS edible. In fact, all parts of it but the vine are edible. The leaves are supposedly great in salads or baked into quiche. The flowers supposedly are great in jam. The roots… Well, if you know how to cook other root vegetables, you know what to do with kudzu root. Feed this stuff to your livestock and cook it.

Eat it before it eats your house.

Eat it before it eats your house.

please don’t let this hot take get to the same people who have said some wild shit on My Famous Post but:

ultimately the point of regenerative agriculture and any sufficient green new deal will be to get to carbon neutrality, followed by a slight carbon sink. if scientists and governments do their jobs (lmao), animal agriculture SHOULD produce some amount of carbon dioxide and methane. like. those gases are part of a healthy ecosystem.

to say it another way, transportation, construction, etc. should be carbon sinks. agriculture should also be a carbon sink (the more plants, the more carbon sequestration, etc.). however, for reasons i’ve gone into before and don’t feel like going into again now, animals are necessary for healthy agriculture; therefore, even though the NET effect of the system is to be carbon negative, it is okay and even necessary to produce some greenhouse gases.

the point is to make the whole system carbon negative. counter-intuitively, the best way to do that includes animals as part of the system, which means that some CO2 and methane will be produced. am i making sense? idk man i think about systems a lot

Animals are vital to reverse desertification in brittle grassland regions. We may end up needing more animals rather than less.

Solarpunk Action Week Day 4:

I’ve been feeling under the weather these past couple days, so I went online to my public library website and put holds on some books.

At my library, they put on their receipts how much I saved by not buying the books. I think that’s so cool! I love cramming my bookshelf full of books, but I also love saving money and not wasting paper. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t typically read a book twice. So what’s the point of buying it if I’m not going to read it multiple times? I’m not shaming people who love to buy books. I love it, too. But if the library has the book for free, I’m not sure if I would like it so much to purchase it, and I’m tight on money, you bet the library will see me on a weekly basis. The same can be said about movies and music CDs.

I also found some good recipes for seed bombs! All I need are the seeds, but I have some great places I think they should go. I think both making them and spreading them will be lots of fun!

Romanticise living in a comfortable apartment in the city. Romanticise keeping a shelf and a windowsill full of plants, and baking bread in the evenings, and crocheting the next section of your blanket after work. Fact if the matter is, not everyone can physically go and live in a cottage and work the land. It isn’t practical or possible, for financial or physical reasons, but cottagecore can be a Vibe that you can take with you wherever you go. Do what’s practical and what makes you happy. Find joy in doing what you can to bring your aesthetic into your daily life. You don’t have to go all out or nothing. Urban cottagecore, babey!

Solarpunk Action Week - Days 4 and 5

I’ve had a couple of bad health days these past few days, but I took them as an opportunity to work on a solarpunk zine that I’ve been planning since last summer.

It’s going to be accessible online for now, perhaps in two formats - a pretty one that looks good online and one that can be easily printed.

Anyway, if anyone wants to chat about it with me, hmu!

im so…tired of “love wins” and “love is love” being the #1 talking point in lgbt+ acceptance campaigns. for one thing, as this post points out, it completely excludes trans people who are lgbt+ because of their gender, not because of who they love

but also….i feel like i’m lgbtqia+ because of who i am not because of who i love, or who i might love in the future. i want people to accept me for who i am, and because this is a part of me, not because of who i love.

the people i love don’t define me, i define me, and i dont want people to accept me because they think my relationship is worthy of respect. i want people to respect me because they think that i am worthy of respect, no matter who i date, who i love, who i have in my life.

other things pointed out in the notes+tags of this post/other thoughts ive had

- bi people in different gender relationships already have their “love” respected and it doesn’t mean that people respect their identities. people even use that love to invalidate bi people’s identities

- not all lgbt+ people experience or want to experience “love”, e.g. aromantic people

- its v. alienating to lgbtqia+ people who have never been in relationship or have never experienced love

- its based on the concept of romantic love as the Most Important Thing when people already focus too much on romantic relationships, sometimes to the detriment of their own wellbeing, non-romantic relationships, or mental health

remember that moisturising is an important part of hand hygiene. especially if you’re washing your hands more frequently these days. healthy, intact skin is one of your immune system’s barriers, as dry and cracked skin can harbour dirt and microbes, and in extra bad cases skin infection can tank your immune system further

soap and water is great for getting rid of harmful microbes but they also remove your skin’s natural oils, so please please please apply some lotion after you wash your hands

I recommend moisturizing your hands before you fall asleep. It allows your body access to moisture overnight and especially helps with excessive handwashing. I only know this from years of experience as a mysophobe.

yo does anyone else feel CONSTANTLY guilty? like you’ve always done something wrong but you don’t know what it is?

Yes, and I’ve spoken to my therapist about it, who offered an explanation:

She says that people who from a young age were made to feel like they kept doing things wrong - people who’s parents had impossibly high standards for them, people who were bullied, people who have special needs, people who didn’t develop crushes on the “right” people, people who didn’t act like the “right” gender - basically ended up being made to feel guilty so much that guilt became their default response to everything. Guilt became the emotional response to anything which the person didn’t already have a set emotion for.

People for whom guilt is the default emotional response are also more likely to have low self-esteem, doubt their own experiences, and experience impostor syndrome. So, watch out for that too guys

After enough reinforcement it’s just efficient; going straight to guilt saves time and effort in enough cases that your brain just saves it as a shortcut.
